How to Write the History of the New World: Histories, Epistemologies, and Identities in the Eighteenth-Century Atlantic World (Cultural Sit

In the mid-eighteenth century, the French naturalist Buffon contended that the New World was in fact geologically new—that it had recently emerged from the waters—and that dangerous miasmas had caused all organic life on the continents to degenerate. In the “dispute of the New World” many historians, naturalists, and moral philosophers from Europe and the Americas (including Thomas Jefferson) sought either to confirm or refute Buffon’s views. This book maintains that the “dispute” was also a debate over historical authority: upon whose sources and facts should naturalists and historians reconstruct the history of the continent and its peoples?

The author traces the cultural processes that led early-modern intellectuals on both sides of the Atlantic to question primary sources that had long been considered authoritative: Mesoamerican codices, early colonial Spanish chronicles, and travel accounts. In the process, he demonstrates how the writings of these critics led to the rise of the genre of conjectural history. The book also adds to the literature on nation formation by exploring the creation of specific identities in Spain and Spanish America by means of particular historical narratives and institutions. Finally, it demonstrates that colonial intellectuals went beyond mirroring or contesting European ideas and put forth daring and original critiques of European epistemologies that resulted in substantially new historiographical concepts.

"In view of the breakthrough represented by the achievements of this book, strikingly heterodox and impressively persuasive interpretations of the 'dispute of the New World,' it is of cardinal importance in several fields of history: Latin America, the Spanish monarchy, Enlightenment, historiography, and New World cultural encounters."—Felipe Fernández-Armesto, Oxford University

"Refreshes our understanding of the colonial past and of the origins of the independence movements in the New World. A masterpiece of scholarly ingenuity."—The Economist (Books of the Year)

"The year's best monograph: a startling excavation in Latin America's mental pre-history."—The Independent

"A model of scholarship. . . . Explains how Latin America began to form, before independence, in colonial minds. The author leads the reader into beguiling labyrinths: Boturini's lost library, Palenque's ruins, Enlightenment rivalries."—Times Literary Supplement

"This is an extraordinarily ambitious and illuminating book on the search for new historical narratives in eighteenth-century New Spain. It is a remarkable journey of discovery, a veritable history of historiography for the late colonial period."—William B. Taylor, University of California, Berkeley

This is a work of prodigious learning, with potentially far-reaching implications for the intellectual history of the early modern Atlantic world. It creatively adapts recent themes in the histiography of early modern science to offer a new approach to the 'dispute of the New World.'"—Journal of Colonialism and Colonial History
"Canizares-Esguerra proves a provocative model to inspire future Atlantic intellectual histories, in which both Northern and Southern metropolitans and colonials (engaging, also, the documents and artifacts of native peoples) think and write not in provincial isolation, but in complex, trans-oceanic dialogue."—Journal of Colonialism and Colonial History
“There can be no doubt about the tremendous achievements of this book . . . .In an account that can only be described as magisterial for its impressive command of an enormous archive, the erudition of its philosophical scholarship, and the tour-de-force of its scope, Jorge Canizares-Esguerra’s book will be indispensable in our quest for a more global and comprehensive understanding of New World historiography, ‘the Enlightenment,’ and the making of modernity in the eighteenth-century Atlantic world.”—William and Mary Quartlery

Discusses the evolving interpretation of history
By Midwest Book Review
Written by Jorge Canizares-Esguerra (Assistant Professor of History , State University of New York, Buffalo, New York), How To Write The History Of The New World: Histories, Epistemologies, and Identities in the Eighteenth-Century Atlantic World is a scholarly, college-level work discussing the evolving interpretation of history, including the changing European perceptions of the reliability of indigenous sources concerning the history of the New World, 18th century patriotism in Spain and its consequences, and exactly who was it who became Enlightened during the Enlightenment? A profound, thoroughly researched, persuasively argued, seminal text about the nuances of history and its perception over 200 years ago, How To Write The History Of The New World is very highly recommended reading for students of western hemispheric history and a core addition to academic reference collections.

A waste of time and paper
By Charles J. Willington
To date this remains one of the most dry, boring and uninvolving texts I've ever had the liberty of engaging in. It offers no real message that is clear to the reader. If you can plod through the dry and unimaginitive attempts to convey it's "message" using histories of Latin America, you will find the basic underlying premise the Author is trying to convey is "I don't know how to write the history of the new world so here is how you should do it". "Why?" you'll find yourself asking, "If you can't write it why should I?". How this is supposed to help students become interested in writing about history in a correct fashion, which I believe is the point of this book remains something of an anomoly. A slow read, that is not in the least bit thought provoking except for other ways to convey to others how bad the book actually is, loses its message within pludering adages about footnoting and other forms of writing stylistically, all of which should be already within the realm of knowledge to anyone who attempts to read this mess. The author would have done much better to seperate the ideas between writing history, giving examples, and attempting to offer some sort of stylistic advice rather than melding them into some sort of amalgam. Of course that wouldn't cover any new ground, as that has already been done previously, all this book does is put the three together, except the end result is a difficult, dry and uninformative read that best remains on the shelf.

Since the 1992 Los Angeles riots, Koreatown has become increasingly fractured by intergenerational conflict, class polarization, and suburban flight. In the face of these struggles, community organizations can provide centralized resources and infrastructure to foster an ethnic consciousness and political solidarity among Korean Americans. This book analyzes the role of ethnic community-based organizations and the dynamics of contemporary Korean American politics.

Drawing on two case studies, the author identifies diverse ways in which community-based organizations negotiate their political agendas and mainstream ties within the traditional ethnic power structures. One organization promotes middle-class ethnic goals through accommodation to immigrant leaders, while the other emphasizes social justice through alliances with outside interest groups. Both cases challenge the traditional assumption that assimilation undermines ethnicity as a meaningful framework for political identity and solidarity in immigrant groups. Legacies of Struggle reveals how community-based organizations create innovative spaces for political participation among new generations of Korean Americans.

Before the Bobbies: The Night Watch and Police Reform in Metropolitan London, 1720-1830, by Elaine Reynolds

The famed Bow Street Runners were not the only “police” in eighteenth-century London. This book examines the night watch system, the locally controlled regime of law enforcement that provided professional policing in the areas of metropolitan London outside the City of London until 1829, the year in which Sir Robert Peel established England’s first centralized police force (the Metropolitan Police, known as Scotland Yard).

The process by which the night watch was transformed into a professional police force began in the 1730’s with legislation enabling local authorities (parishes and vestries) to tax residents for policing services. Thereafter, local authorities experimented with and developed many of the techniques that are now associated with modern policing, including the use of professionals, beat systems, uniforms, and a hierarchical chain of command. What emerges from the author’s detailed examination of the decades of local police reform and development in the period leading up to the 1829 Metropolitan Police Act is a much fuller picture of the origins of modern policing, along with a revised understanding of the background to the Act.

Loyal forces had become increasingly diverse, making centralization a key issue, and reformers were also driven by concerns about ordinary property crime and fears of radicalism. The book thus addresses several important historiographical issues surrounding the origins of modern state authority, and shows that the early modern British state was more responsive to urban problems than has previously been acknowledged.

Max Weber's Economy and Society: A Critical CompanionFrom Camic, Charles (EDT)/ Gorski, Philip S. (EDT)/ Trubek, David M. (EDT)

Max Weber's Economy and Society is widely considered the most important single work in sociology and among the most important in the history of the social sciences. This volume provides a critical and up-to-date introduction to Weber's magnum opus. While much has been published about the various parts of Economy and Society, this is the first book to cover all of its major sections and themes, as well as to discuss the methodological vision that unites them.

In Max Weber's Economy and Society, a distinguished group of scholars illuminates the central arguments of Economy and Society and appraises their contemporary relevance for the analysis of the economy, the polity, law, religion, and social action. With essays that are both theoretical and empirical, this book will be of interest to those already familiar with Weber's work and to those encountering it for the first time.

"This book provides an indispensable introduction to Weber's Economy and Society, and should be mandatory reading for social scientists who are interested in Weber. The various contributions to this volume, all written by important Weberian scholars, present the culmination of decades of debates about Weber's various concepts and theories. A little disjointed and not what I expected. A good read if you have lots and lots of time to sort through the various essays and find specifically the ones relevant to each section of Weber's economy and society.

Review
"The Ancient Maya is the definitive statement for our current understanding of their time and place. It goes well beyond any other competing volume in its encompassing reach."—Journal of Anthropological Research

"(T)he most comprehensive and most lavishly illustrated book on its subject."—Journal of Latin American Studies

"The Ancient Maya has become a standard text on the study of Mayan culture and prehistory. Given the veritable explosion of research on the Maya, greater understanding of this past—yet living—culture has been realized."—Colonial Latin American Historical Review

"(T)his work is surely a must-have reference for Mayanists of all fields. . . . The Ancient Maya is appropriate to scholars, graduate students, and upper-level undergraduates."—The Americas

"This marvelous book shows why the Maya constitute one of the best "case studies" of social and political evolution. Rich with detail and new insights, the authors skillfully show that the Maya were on a par with other great civilizations such as the Greeks, Egyptians, and Chinese. This truly
monumental work has been updated to meet the needs of all readers -- from laymen to tourists to professional archaeologists -- and it should be on everyone's bookshelf to read and re-read."
—Joyce Marcus, University of Michigan, Museum of Anthropology
"The Ancient Maya remains the best and most comprehensive single source on the prehispanic Maya. Easy to read and up-to-date, this new edition is an excellent choice for the general reader and for college classes."
—E. Wyllys Andrews, Middle American Research Institute, Tulane University
"The Ancient Maya is indispensable to anyone interested in the Maya--or in complex societies in general--because of its authoritative voice and encyclopedic scope. It is entertainingly written so that one can sit down and read through its chapters, while at the same time its tables,
figures, and superb index and bibliography make it a dependable and essential reference tool. There simply isn't anything comparable to this book."
—Prudence M. Rice, Southern Illinois University Carbondale
"For nearly 60 years, sucessive editions of The Ancient Maya have served as benchmarks of our knowledge of Maya civilization. This new edition follows in the footsteps of its illustrious predecessors, presenting the most thorough and up-to-date synthesis of our knowledge of the Maya
civilization as revealed through archaeology, epigraphy, and art history. Scholars and the general public alike will be excited to find the latest archaeological discoveries and theories about topics like the rise of Maya civilization and the Classic Maya collapse. Thanks to significant reorganization, the text addresses the history of Maya archaeology and epigraphy, thus contextualizing the study of the ancient Maya within the larger field of archaeology. In short, this book remains the definitive synthesis of our knowledge of Precolumbian Maya
civilization."
—Jason Yaeger, University of Wisconsin-Madison

The authority on the Ancient Maya
By Magaly Wilson
This book has had many re-printings, and for good reason. It is THE english language book that covers the anicient Maya in one volume. This book was used as a text in a class I took in Mesoamerican archaeology. I found it easy to read and very interesting. Great for a travel companion. I used it extensively while traveling through Yucatán and Chiapas.

great archaeological writing
By Tomas Mendizabal
Wow. This is the definitive book on the Maya. Whether youre a student or a scholar, its got almost everything. Very readable prose, good organization, and excellent photographs. In fact, they are almost the best part. The organization is excellent providing first an overview, chapter by chapter of major events in Maya history, and then a dissection of every major aspect of Maya life. If the Maya are your thing, dont miss this book. Great value for money.

What a Great Book!
By Boetius
I had only a limited interest in the Maya until I got this book, and now a new world of understanding has opened up. Sharer provides a text that is at once detailed and professional, but also accessible and well-written without the dull, dull, report-style of most serious works on the subject. I have spent literally weeks perusing the book, and I seem to always find something new and interesting. Also worthy of mention are the abundant illustrations and photos. Finally, Sharer is to be commended for his intellectual honesty and objectivity - without fail he reviews the merits of the most important interpretations about a historical issue before making a non-binding judgment of his own. This is one to have in your personal library. Very well done indeed!

The Annals of Lü BuweiFrom Brand: Stanford University Press

This is the first complete English translation of Lüshi chunqiu, compiled in 239 b. c. under the patronage of Lü Buwei, prime minister to the ruler of the state of Qin, who was to become the first emperor of a newly unified China fifteen years later. Lü retained a group of scholars whose aim was to encompass the world's knowledge in one great encyclopedia; so delighted was Lü with the finished work that he is said to have offered a fabulous prize of gold to anyone who could add or subtract even a single word.

An exceptionally rich and comprehensive compendium, The Annals of Lü Buwei recounts in engaging, straightforward, and readable prose the great variety of beliefs and customs of its time. The work is one of the great monuments of Chinese thinking, a work of originality and cohesion, inspired by a vision of a universal empire ruled by principles that ensured harmony between man and nature, protective of human and animal life, devoted to learning and culture, practicing benevolence and kindness, and motivated by reason and morality.

In addition to revealing an advanced state of technical knowledge, the Annals set forth a philosophy of government suitable to the centralized control that the Qin state would subsequently establish. It also took into account every philosophical trend of the day, sometimes adapting themes, sometimes combining ideas that had not previously been associated, sometimes rejecting and refuting positions that were in conflict with its basic vision. Because Lü aimed at comprehensiveness, his work preserved a number of systems of thought that are otherwise unknown or scarcely known. The Annals thus provides an essential tool for anyone seeking to reconstruct the philosophical controversies of the third century b. c. At the same time, Lü's compendium proclaims his independent, highly original philosophical positions. Today, with most of the works of classical Chinese philosophy long lost, The Annals of Lü Buwei remains indispensable as a summa of the Chinese intellectual world of its time.

From Library Journal
Knoblock (philosophy, Univ. of Miami, FL) and Riegel (Chinese, Univ. of California, Berkeley) make a signal contribution to the translated canon of Chinese historical/philosophical works with this version of the L shi chun qiu, the third-century B.C.E. work commissioned by Qin dynasty merchant and prime minister L Buwei. This compendium of early Chinese thought, divided into three sections, is also a work of history, an almanac, and a manual of state ritual. Though it was written at a time when legalism dominated the philosophical schools in China, it is quite anti-Legalist in tone. Not only do the editors provide a highly readable and complete translation of the work, but they also offer an annotated text in Chinese, following the time-honored Sinological tradition. By basing their translation on Chen Qiyou's critical edition, which was used by Taiwan's Academic Sinica for an electronic database, they allow readers to consult the full text (www.sinica.edu.tw/ftms-bin/ftmsw3). In the book, the reader can consult the entire text, with its almanacs and essays on history and other subjects in its distinctive Taoistic tone, as well as valuable appendixes, including fragments and a preface to the text, affiliations reflected in each chapter, an alphabetical finding list, and an extensive glossary. This translation is in accord with the high standards set by L when he first commissioned this encyclopedic work. Recommended for East Asian collections in public and academic libraries.DD.E. Review
"This book gives us the first complete English translation of the Lushi chunqiu. . . . Knoblock and Riegel aim for a book "in convenient form that will serve the needs of the general reader while providing the scholar with the information necessary to understand the decisions we have made in translating the text." They have succeeded admirably. . . . Recommended for all collections on early China."—Religious Studies Review

"John Knoblock and Jeffrey Riegel have provided us with a marvelous work in this first rate annotated translation of the complete extant text, as well as extensive notes and appendices. . . . In the past, we have found ourselves in debt to the late John Knoblock for his Xunzi. Now we are further indebted to him and Jefrey Riegel for this splendid scholarly work."—American Jounal of Chinese Studies

good at every level
By Baby-sensei
This is an outstanding work for anyone interested in the Warring States period at any level. Beginners will find the translation straight-forward, readable, even engaging from time to time. For those a little more advanced, the Preface and Introduction will prove to be extremely helpful (as the library reviews indicate). For advanced students, the translators have included the literary Chinese based on the critical edition--in traditional characters, in an easily readable script. One can only wish that we could have scholarly works like this (i.e., accessible even by beginners) for other Warring States texts, particularly the Zhang Guo Ce, XunZi, MoZi, etc.

Chinese history is fascinating
By othoniaboys
In 1969-70 I had the pleasure of taking a course in ancient Chinese history taught by the late John Knoblock. I found it fascinating. We had to consult translations of the original chronicles, and I became familiar with the world that is likewise presented in the present book. Every intelligent person ought to read at least one of these chronicles, if only to balance a view of the ancient world that otherwise might be dominated by the Greek and Roman historians.

Great book, so-so binding.
By Lawrence S. Manzo
The original deserves five+ stars, and the translation is not bad. Only complaint is the binding. Our library has an earlier edition and it is very well bound. This later edition is poorly bound, considering the price and the quality of the writing.

The Culture of Power: The Lin Biao Incident in the Cultural Revolution, by Qiu Jin

On the night of September 12-13, 1971, Lin Biao, Mao Zedong’s officially recognized closest comrade-in-arms and chosen successor, was killed in a mysterious plane crash in Mongolia. The Chinese government did not issue an announcement of Lin’s death, and it became generally known only in the summer of 1972, when the official explanation stated that Lin had masterminded plans for a coup d’état and the assassination of Mao, and died fleeing to the Soviet Union after both plans had failed. But no convincing proof was offered to substantiate these claims, and the Lin Biao incident has remained an unsolved mystery.

The author brings unique credentials to her reexamination of the incident. She is the daughter of the former commander-in-chief of the Chinese air force, who served under Lin and, along with thousands of others, was imprisoned as a result of the purges that followed Lin’s death. For this book, she has drawn upon her father’s unpublished memoirs, interviews with former high government officials and their families, and her own experience and acquaintances among the government’s elite families, as well as an abundance of newly available documents. The book reexplores three key questions surrounding the Lin Biao incident: Why would Lin, the brilliant architect of pivotal victories in the Civil War who had been doggedly loyal to Mao for decades, suddenly attempt an ill-conceived coup? Why, when the alleged coup failed, would he defect to the Soviet Union? And why and how did Lin’s plane crash?

Challenging the official account, this book puts forth a radically different interpretation of the incident, arguing that in a narrow sense it was a consequence of the poisonous interplay of governmental politics and family politics during the Cultural Revolution. The roles of Lin’s wife, Ye Qun, and son, Lin Liguo, in the events leading up to the fateful flight are fully discussed for the first time in any language. This view is vividly set forth against a moving portrayal of Chinese society in the throes of the Cultural Revolution and the increasingly desperate efforts of an aging Mao to assure his own immortality.

From Library Journal
Qiu (history, Old Dominion Univ.) is the daughter of a general who served in the Chinese air force under Lin Biao, Mao Zedong's chosen successor, who died in a mysterious plane crash in 1971. Unlike the sensationalized version, Yao Ming-le's The Conspiracy and Murder of Mao's Heir (LJ 6/1/83), Qiu's book focuses on the broader systemic, traditional, and personal factors that led to conflict between Mao and Lin. Qiu provides reasonable evidence that, even at the beginning of the Cultural Revolution in 1966, the 73-year-old Mao was suffering from senile paranoia and that his wife, Jiang Qing, long oppressed by the Communist Party, was finally able to make her mark. Qiu suggests that Lin had psychoses that absolutely prevented him from claiming a public role and that Lin's wife, son, and daughter had different ways of promoting Lin as one of the leaders of the Chinese revolution, thereby challenging Mao's authority. Qiu uses the Lin Biao "affair" as a case study on the chaos of the Cultural Revolution. Highly recommended for all libraries.APeggy Spitzer Christoff, Oak Park, IL

Review
"Highly recommended for all libraries."—Library Journal

"In describing the political culture that produced Lin Biao, Jin Qiu accomplishes what very few Westerners could ever hope to: the construction of a nuanced and reasonably full-orbed cultural discussion of the texture and tenor of extra-institutional machinations, interpersonal relationships, family and inter-family dynamics, and even jealousies and superstitions that figured into decision-making and policy formulation."—Canadian Journal of History

"Jin Qiu presents a fascinating and detailed investigation of one of the stranger twists in modern Chinese political history, and as such it is a significant contribution to scholarship on the period."—American Journal of Chinese Studies

A Wonderful Analysis
By A Customer
Having read a number of the books available on this topic, and studied modern Chinese history extensively, I can say that this is one of the best books for a reader with interest in either the "Incident" specifically, or with more general interest in the high-level intrigues in China during the Cultural Revolution.
One of the many joys of this book is Jin's broad use of sources to achieve a tight and focused view of her topic. Dr. Jin has successfully captured the elements that are necessary to tell how Lin became Mao's successor, and then how he fell from grace just as Peng Dehuai and Liu Shaoqi did before him. But she has delved deep, drawing from hundreds of diverse elements such as personal interviews with her father (one of Lin's generals) and other involved persons, to the official documents of the Chinese Communist Party and the trial of the "Gang of Four." This reach has enabled her to carefully reconstruct not only the narrow time frame of the "Incident," but also the intrigues and power struggles at the highest level of government that enabled the Cultural Revolution to engulf the entire nation.
In doing so, Jin has not only drawn a clear picture of Lin Biao, but also of Mao Zedong. Mao emerges as a complicated human in her portrait; he is ruthless in his paranoid persecutions, but also compassionate towards the peasants of China (but, as is clear from the book, this compassion is not towards individual peasants, but towards the peasant class as a whole). It is a compelling, human portrait that emerges, and one that dovetails nicely with recent scholarship on Mao in his later years.
Finally, Dr. Jin extensively uses Western ideas of historiography and political psychology. She artfully blends traditional Chinese analysis and values with the latest Western trends. The analysis of this slice of Chinese history that results is unique in the study of modern China.

Intriguing
By Steven Shirley
The mists that surround the Lin Biao incident have not been completely cleared even in the increasingly open Chinese society. Scholars who have tried to tackle this issue have run into the roadblocks of the CCP, keeping them from garnering valuable insight into the matter. However, Dr. Jin has succeeded where others have failed. The daughter of Wu Faxian, one of Lin Biao's trusted generals, Jin not only sheds new light into the Lin Biao incident but also illuminates the lives and court intrigues of those around Biao. The reader will quickly see that the ancient intrigues that surrounded the dynastic struggles of Old China did not pass away with the Qing dynasty but were alive and well in the era of Mao Zedong, particularly during the Cultural Revolution. Using a mixture of primary resources and personal interviews Jin weaves a masterful tale of just how and why Lin Biao fell from Mao's grace and ultimately died in a mysterious plane crash. We learn of the role of Lin's children and his wife, a subject that few scholars have devoted as much effort to uncovering. Jin's closeness to some of the major players in the incident in no way affects her objectivity, but gives the entire affair a new dimension. She examines the incident with the careful lens of a historian, piecing together the factual with the circumstantial. This book belongs on the shelves of every China scholar, and those who are interested in the fascinating stories of these men and women, many of whom rose from peasants to the pinnacle of power within the "new" China.

Good Read
By Shanti Shin
Qiu Jin's book on the Lin Biao incident is an intriguing look behind the scenes of one of communist China's remaining mysteries. Why did Lin turn on Mao? What role did his subordinates play? What effect did it have on China? Some of these questions are not answered, but others are. Most interesting in this book is the role of Lin's family, including his ambitious son and strong wife. The reader with a sense of Chinese history will see that the intrigues of Communist China did not differ much from Imperial China. Jin does a great job and illustrating this. Although she does say some things that are troubling, such as calling Mao "compassionate," overall her treatment of the subject is valuable for the insider perspective that she brings to the subject. I wholeheartedly recommend this book. I hope Jin follows up in the future.

On Escape: De l’évasion (Cultural Memory in the Present), by Emmanuel Levinas

First published in 1935, On Escape represents Emmanuel Levinas's first attempt to break with the ontological obsession of the Western tradition. In it, Levinas not only affirms the necessity of an escape from being, but also gives a meaning and a direction to it. Beginning with an analysis of need not as lack or some external limit to a self-sufficient being, but as a positive relation to our being, Levinas moves through a series of brilliant phenomenological analyses of such phenomena as pleasure, shame, and nausea in order to show a fundamental insufficiency in the human condition.

In his critical introduction and annotation, Jacques Rolland places On Escape in its historical and intellectual context, and also within the context of Levinas's entire oeuvre, explaining Levinas's complicated relation to Heidegger, and underscoring the way Levinas's analysis of "being riveted," of the need for escape, is a meditation on the body.

Review
"On Escape is an extremely important early text by someone considered by many to be the most important ethical thinker of the twentieth century. It contains the first full treatment of many of the themes Levinas would pursue over the next sixty years. Rolland's contributions are not simply helpful supplements to the essay but a quasi-necessity for understanding its place and significance for both Levinas's work in particular and twentieth century thought in general." —Michael Naas,DePaul University

Critical read, sloppy edition
By anonymous
Even those unschooled in Heideggerean thought and language can make it through Levinas' short text (@ 20 pp) -- but the translator (and by extension the publisher) failed in making a clear map for the reader with regard to the notes; which is precisely the purpose of notes to the text. When not flat-out unreadable -- or "sloppy" -- they're flat-out wrong, and one of Levinas' key concepts gets attributed to a nonexistent text, per the confused translation of "Le Temps [sic] et l'autre" as "TA" which the book otherwise identifies (more or less consistently) as "TO." Perhaps what's most irritating is the excessive intervention by the translator into the text, who in addition to knowing French and English, also apparently knows Levinas better than himself.

An important early work by Levinas
By M. PARADISO-MICHAU
Originally published in 1935, this English translation and publication of _On Escape_ brings the reader closer to the early thoughts and writings of Emmanuel Levinas than previous publications. His first major original manuscript after his dissertation on Husserl's theory of intuition, _Existence and Existents_, would not appear until 1947, and the lectures collected and published as _Time and the Other_ not until 1948, so the publication of this text should prove to be indispensable to English-reading audiences who have interests in Levinas' (early) work, as well as that of twentieth century Continental European philosophy. Here traditionally accepted phenomenological and existential concepts are introduced, studied, and discussed, such as the following: ontological Being, existents (beings), the identity of the self, the lived-body, radical finitude, etc.

The human subject, which modern philosophy has argued is dual in nature, no longer wishes to escape its existence, its Being; rather it seeks to be "delivered" or "deneutralized" from the world (47). As he concludes _Existence and Existents_, Levinas will later seek a way out of the there is (il y a), and discovers it in the concept of the hypostasis. One must go beyond Being to actualize this point. Philosophy, traditionally accepted, has not thought through the implications of such a task. Throughout history, philosophers have been too concerned with beings. Heidegger introduced the ontological distinction, and began teaching us to (re)think Being. Levinas now wishes to help us think through and beyond Being to get to the ethical relation to, and the infinite responsibility for, the absolute Other -- the other human being.
