Becoming Modern Women: Love and Female Identity in Prewar Japanese Literature and Culture, by Michiko Suzuki

Presenting a fresh examination of women writers and prewar ideology, this book breaks new ground in its investigation of love as a critical aspect of Japanese culture during the early to mid-twentieth century. As a literary and cultural history of love and female identity, Becoming Modern Women focuses on same-sex love, love marriage, and maternal love—new terms at that time; in doing so, it shows how the idea of "woman," within the context of a vibrant print culture, was constructed through the modern experience of love. Author Michiko Suzuki's work complements current scholarship on female identities such as "Modern Girl" and "New Woman," and interprets women's fiction in conjunction with nonfiction from a range of media—early feminist writing, sexology books, newspapers, bestselling love treatises, native ethnology, and historiography. While illuminating the ways in which women used and challenged ideas about love, Suzuki explores the historical and ideological shifts of the period, underscoring the broader connections between gender, modernity, and nationhood.

Review
"The most refreshing and fascinating aspect of the work is its attention to the significance of the life cycle in the construction of the modern notion of 'woman' . . . Becoming Modern Women enriches our understanding of gender norms in the prewar period.—Craig Colbeck, Social Science Japan Journal

"The blend of theory, historical and literary analysis makes [Becoming Modern Women] immediately accessible while offering a wealth of information on the intellectual and literary movements in the era, much of it previously untapped in such depth. The book makes an important contribution to the growing field of Japanese women's studies and is all the more welcome for its focus on these important literary works, offering a significant addition to the material available in English in the field of Japanese women writers."—Helen Kilpatrick, Japanese Studies

"Suzuki's style is both accessible and engaging; those who are not familiar with prewar Japanese literature and culture will also enjoy her multilayered portrayal of how women experienced the modern notion of love. This book will appeal to researchers interested in the interrelation between gender, modernity, and an ever-elusive concept of love."—Mayako Murai, Asian Studies Review

"Michiko Suzuki's remarkable new study, Becoming Modern Women, challenges established interpretations of work by three of Japan's most famous modern women writers . . . Suzuki not only draws critical attention to the work of women whose celebrated lives have often outshone their work but presents a provocative model for new directions in feminist scholarship on Japanese literature."—Jan Bardsley, Journal of Japanese Studies

"Suzuki has pulled together a tremendous amount of information and documented it precisely and clearly . . . [T]his study is a solid work, and the bibliography and footnotes alone make it worth one's attention."—Susanna Fessler, Monumenta Nipponica
"This meticulous, well-organized book interrogates the construction of modern Japanese female identity . . . Highly recommended." —L.I. Winston
"By taking the works of three important prewar women writers—Yoshiya Nobuko, Miyamoto Yuriko, and Okamoto Kanoko—and placing them in the context of a discourse on 'love ideology,' Michiko Suzuki's book provides important insights into the complex relationship between gender, nation, and modernity in Japan."—Ronald Loftus, Willamette University
"This book offers a new way of approaching Japanese women's writing of the inter-war period, yielding strikingly fresh perspectives that make an important contribution to both the fields of gender studies and Japanese literature."—Sarah Strong, Bates College

Fascinating examination of love
By Kate
Michiko Suzuki's book is a fascinating examination of love and female identity. As the title indicates, the book's focus is on prewar Japanese literature and culture, and Suzuki's writing is very accessible even to someone without much knowledge of Japanese literature of this period. At the same time, the ideas of love and female identity that are discussed, such as the importance of female friendships, the desire for meaningful occupation, and the experience of maternity, transcend the period and culture, making it a work of great interest to a wide audience.

"Becoming Modern Women"
By SK
It is easy to say that our identities are culturally and socially created. But it is not easy to research and imagine the process of cultural/social identities. Professor Michiko Suzuki carefully examines specific historical contexts and tells wonderful stories of "becoming modern women." This book helps us to understand how we "are." Professor Suzuki's ideas are complex, but language is tangible. This is very handy for teaching.

Beyond Chinatown: The Metropolitan Water District, Growth, and the Environment in Southern California, by Steven P. Erie

As urban growth outstrips water supplies, how can the global challenge of providing "liquid gold" be met? Mixing history and policy analysis, Steven Erie tells the compelling story of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD)—one of the world's largest and most important public water agencies—and its role in building the world's 8th largest economy in a semi-desert. No tawdry tale of secret backroom conspiracies—as depicted in the famed film noir Chinatown—this fresh telling concerns an unheralded regional institution, its entrepreneurial public leadership, and pioneering policymaking.

Using untapped primary sources, the author re-examines this great regional experiment from its obscure 1920s-era origins, through the Colorado River Aqueduct and State Water Projects, to today's daunting mission of drought management, water quality, environmental stewardship, and post-9/11 supply security. A key focus is MWD's navigation of recent epic water battles: San Diego's combative quest for water independence from MWD and L.A.; lingering conflicts over the Colorado River and northern California's fragile Bay-Delta ecosystem; and the myriad challenges posed by water markets, privatization, and water transfers.

Facing unprecedented challenges, MWD is devising innovative formulas to sustain this improbable desert civilization. Beyond Chinatown concludes by considering MWD's Integrated Resources Plan as a global model for water-resources planning and management, water supply diversification and reliability, affordability, and environmental sustainability. Chinatown's seductive mythologies have obscured MWD's authentic, instructive history and lessons.

Praise for Steve Erie's previous book, Globalizing L.A.:

"This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the politics of Western cities, the politics of urban development, and especially the future politics of cities that are likely to be contenders in the increasingly competitive arena of global trade. . . . Erie's analysis will forever direct us to look first at certain public agencies to begin to understand larger patterns of economic growth in any metropolitan area."—Journal of Urban Affairs

"[A] fascinating history of the Los Angeles region's great assets and the forces that drove their development. . . . One hundred years ago, it was improbable that the Los Angeles region would become the 10th largest economy in the world. In Globalizing L.A., Erie explains how that happened and then, fingers crossed, offers lessons on how California's largest and most diverse city and region can keep playing a leading role."—Los Angeles Times

"Referencing an impressive body of recent academic research, Erie argues that world-class seaport and airport facilities confer substantial economic advantages and more facilitating links between local businesses and the global economy."—The Sacramento Bee

"Erie has built a potent political-economy of urban development that recognizes the crucial role of the public sector in mediating globalizing processes . . . and this is a valuable lesson for academics, dockworkers, community developers, and environmental activists alike."—Economic Geography

Review
"Erie's persuasive argument that the Metropolitan Water District is one of the creative but flawed designers of Southern California is haunted by forgetfulness: We forget where our water comes from....We forget who manages it for us and why water policy is the most important political decision we never get to make....Unfortunately forgetting is what we're best at. It helps explains why we can't move beyond the myths of Chinatown without stories about Los Angeles as reasoned and convincing as Erie's."—L.A. Times Book Review
"Beyond Chinatown's merger of history and policy study, set against debunked myth, should serve as a major reorientation for teaching, researching, and planning, not only in Southern California, but in metropolitan regions throughout the world."—Southern California Quarterly

"Water history is tough to write, and no one has done it better than Steven P. Erie in this fast-paced narrative based on monumental research. I marvel at the multi-faceted inclusiveness of this story of water, region, politics, engineering, growth, and the environment."—Kevin Starr, University of Southern California

"In this pathbreaking history of the MWD, Steve Erie brilliantly debunks L.A.'s greatest urban legend and opens bold new perspectives on the secret history of Southern California."—Mike Davis, U.C. Irvine

"Professor Erie lays out for serious students and readers alike a compelling study of the perception and reality of the MET and the major figures and events that define it. The history of real life intrigue revealed is worthy of the Chinatown title, but there is much more here for today's leaders seeking to find a model of success for regional cooperation and accomplishment."—Ron Gastelum, former CEO, Metropolitan Water District of Southern California

"In this sweeping history, Erie gives us not only the people, plans, and decisions of a public agency that has allowed a semi-arid region to take water for granted, but also the consequences of those decisions that have assisted in the creation of one of the world's great economies. And then, like a scout at the horizon, he confronts the global challenges facing the future of water for this region—indeed, the future of California. Beyond Chinatown indeed. It's a great read and an important book."—James Flanigan, business and economics Columnist, LA Times and New York Times
"This revisionist history of the Metropolitan Water District transforms its long accepted "black hat" to pale gray. Steve Erie solidifies his reputation as the contemporary authority on Southern California water politics with this highly engaging book. It is a must read for everyone interested in water policy. "—Helen Ingram, U.C. Irvine
"This is an extremely important work. . . . 'State of the art' in terms of its research and findings on one of the most important water agencies in the nation."—Abraham Hoffman, author of Vision or Villainy: Origins of the Owens Valley-Los Angeles Water Controversy
"This is a first-rate study. It is valuable both for the important story it tells and for the broader lessons it suggests on the role of government in urban development and on the importance of entrepreneurial leadership in meeting complex public needs."—Jameson W. Doig, Princeton University
"Steve Erie knocks another one out of the ballpark. Having written a superb book on machine politics in Rainbows End, and having brought the state back into urban politics in compelling fashion in Globalizing L.A., Erie does path-breaking work once again in his analysis of water politics in Beyond Chinatown showing us the importance of regionalization and how to study it. The second of a trilogy on infrastructure in southern California, Erie's new book is another fascinating saga in how the west was developed. "—Clarence Stone, George Washington University
:”Beyond Chinatown is a valuable blend of economic history, policy analysis, and political science about a huge governmental institution charged with bringing water to the part of the country that best typifies the American economy and society in the latter half of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries -- Los Angeles and Southern California.”—EH.Net
"Beyond Chinatown should be required reading for anyone concerned with how successful the agency that provides water to so many clients has been, and whether MWD can sustain that success in meeting the challenges of the future."—Water and Power Associates, Inc Newsletter

Overdue Debunker

Erie is a brilliant, thorough researcher with a track record that supports the believability of his facts and conclusions. He is too gentle on the San Diego schemers he uncovers in "Beyond Chinatown," but he is a scholar first, and an exciting historian.

About Time
By Kent Schofield
It's about time that someone got beyond the misleading notion that water is simply a morality play. The damage done to developing any rational water policy in California by Chinatown, the movie, and Reisner's Cadillac Desert has been enormous. Eire puts the quest for water for Southern California in a historical and policy-making perspective that goes beyond the literary license taken with the facts that have muddied the politics of water in our state. Unfortunately, Eire isn't interested in a good story as Robert Towne and Reisner were and his book won't get the wide reading it deserves.

Between Rites and Rights: Excision in Women’s Experiential Texts and Human Contexts, by Chantal Zabus

In the past five decades and over three generations, African women writers have introduced a new autobiographical discourse around their experience of excision that brings nuance to the Female Genital Mutilation debate. Spanning pharaonic times through classical antiquity to the onset of the twenty-first century, this unprecedented study shows how this experiential body of literature—encompassing English, Arabic, and French—goes far beyond such traditional topics as universalism and cultural relativism, by locating the female body as a site of liminality between European and African factions, subject and agent; consent and dissent; custom and human rights. Women across the African “excision belt” have broken away from the male discourses of anthropology and psychoanalysis and have fled from “the cult of culture” and from religious and patriarchal surveillance. These women have relocated their struggle to the West, where they seek empowerment and wrestle with the law. While showing the limits of autobiography, Between Rites and Rights boldly interweaves Freudian hysteria, the surgical age, the world of high fashion, male circumcision’s “fearful symmetry,” and Western body modification.

"Of impeccable credentials, Zabus hurls an overdue corrective into the arena of garrulous sociological, medical, legal, and anthr/apoloical approaches to the slicing off a vif of girls' genitalia. Hers is the first single-authored book on pudendal amputations in fiction, myth, autobiography, and psychoanalysis using poststructural interpretation."—Tobe Levin, Wasafiri

"This study on excision is at the very core of a comprehensive, contemporary understanding of cultures where rites controlling female sexual conduct and misconduct continue to play a major role in the production of civilization. Uncompromisingly honest, intellectually rigorous, and erudite, yet utterly informative and easy to approach, Between Rites and Rights is of great import for issues specific to human rights and women in a number of African contexts. It contributes significantly to new perspectives on such sensitive issues as genital mutilation, excision, infibulation, body ownership, and the controversial location of such practices in a global context."—Michel Laronde, University of Iowa

"Between Rites and Rights is an exceedingly well-researched and well-written study and interpretation of the literature on excision. The introduction is expansive and thoughtful—exploring well the history of reception as well as current thoughts on excision from the continent and beyond. The body itself thoroughly documents the literature—fiction by men as well as women and the African woman's experiential text—to arrive at the agency that had long been absent in any discussion of excision."—World Literature Today

"Chantal Zabus' Between Rights and Rites is an important addition to the body of literature on female genital mutilation, a practice that has affected at least 140 million women and girls . . . This work is an important intervention into the debate over which human rights are most important."—Cambridge Journal

The European Union: A Polity of States and Peoples, by Walter van Gerven

This book provides a general introduction to the European Union (EU) as an ever closer union of states and peoples. It describes how, from its origin in 1958 as an economic community of six states, the EU has grown into a political entity of 25 states with a population of more than 450 million. It also explains the constitution-making process that is currently taking place—with a draft constitution now being submitted for ratification by the 25 member states. The book shows how the distinctive features of a democratic polity that characterize the separate EU member states are gradually replicated in the European Union and how the Union is on its way to becoming a democratic polity of its own kind.

Van Gerven writes from a legal perspective, with an eye to political theory and recent American and European history, and with a diverse readership from both sides of the Atlantic in mind.

Review
"This book demonstrates the same lucidity and wisdom regarding the European Union that students of the European Court of Justice have come to expect from van Gerven's writings from the bench. Van Gerven raises and analyzes a series of important questions about democratic accountability and the rule of law in the EU, and about the meaning and the content of the proposed European Constitution." —Mark Pollack, Temple University

"This book, written by one of the greatest scholars of European law, provides a rare insight into the evolving European constitutionalism. Itsanalytical narrative explores themes of democracy, accountability, humanrights and the rule of law and draws comparisons between the U.S. and European political systems. The end result is an excellent essay on European governance." —Takis Tridimas,University of London

Academic Freedom at the Dawn of a New Century: How Terrorism, Governments, and Culture Wars Impact Free SpeechFrom Brand: Stanford Unive

This volume explores the state of academic freedom in the United States and abroad. What impact have the attacks of September 11th and the ensuing war on terrorism had on free speech, access to information, government funding of the sciences, and other cornerstones of freedom of inquiry at American universities? How has the renewed emphasis on patriotism affected the "culture wars" that aroused so much controversy on American campuses? And how does academic freedom in the United States compare to that of other nations?

To engage these crucial questions, the editors have assembled some of the nation's leading experts on academic freedom, from a broad range of disciplines including law, political science, and the history of science.

Surrendering to Utopia: An Anthropology of Human Rights (Stanford Studies in Human Rights), by Mark Goodale

Surrendering to Utopia is a critical and wide-ranging study of anthropology's contributions to human rights. Providing a unique window into the underlying political and intellectual currents that have shaped human rights in the postwar period, this ambitious work opens up new opportunities for research, analysis, and political action. At the book's core, the author describes a "well-tempered human rights"—an orientation to human rights in the twenty-first century that is shaped by a sense of humility, an appreciation for the disorienting fact of multiplicity, and a willingness to make the mundaneness of social practice a source of ethical inspiration.

In examining the curious history of anthropology's engagement with human rights, this book moves from more traditional anthropological topics within the broader human rights community—for example, relativism and the problem of culture—to consider a wider range of theoretical and empirical topics. Among others, it examines the link between anthropology and the emergence of "neoliberal" human rights, explores the claim that anthropology has played an important role in legitimizing these rights, and gauges whether or not this is evidence of anthropology's potential to transform human rights theory and practice more generally.

Review
"Surrendering to Utopia offers a direct reflection on how anthropology only recently came to terms with human rights and their universalistic claims while the book simultaneously outlines the field's numerous theoretical and methodological challenges. Its message is that anthropology can and should have important roles in how human rights are developed and struggles over culture framed."—Freek van der Vet, Suomen Antropologi: Journal of the Finnish Anthropological Society

"Beginning with an excellent opening chapter in which the author clarifies the misunderstood history of the relationship between anthropologists and human rights, the collection goes on to explore topics such as relativism, culture, and the anthropology 'from inside out' of what Goodale call 'transnational human rights networks . . . Highly recommended."—J. B. Edwards, Choice

Surrendering to Utopia makes an unprecedented contribution in both human rights and anthropological studies. Goodale's overview, which synthesizes a large body of literature and identifies the big issues in the field, will help others to re-envision a human rights system that is sensitive to difference. This is a provocative book, and Goodale writes clearly and directly even when dealing with complex issues in this interdisciplinary area."—Patricia D. Mathews-Salazar, H-Net

"This fluid and compelling book draws on a broad intellectual tradition to highlight how the relationship between anthropology and human rights developed and what it could and should become in the future. An engaging and thought-provoking read!"—Marie-Bénédicte Dembour, University of Sussex

"At a time of contrasting narratives about human rights, from irresponsible triumphalism to cynical pessimism, here is a book that masterfully guides us into the complexities of contextualized practices of human rights across cultures and national boundaries. It does this by powerfully engaging anthropology, a discipline that has been marginalized by human rights' conventional scholarship to the latter's greater loss. Thanks to Goodale's very persuasive argument the record is finally being set right."—Boaventura de Sousa Santos, Universities of Coimbra, Warwick, and Wisconsin-Madison
"This is a sophisticated, brave, and ultimately successful attempt to bridge the gap between anthropology and normative theory. By taking on the intricate relationship between anthropology and human rights, Goodale shows clearly why anthropology should matter, not only academically, but also in the wider world of policy and politics. It is a timely book which moves beyond the relativism–universalism dichotomy and thereby demonstrates what anthropological theory in the 21st century ought to look like."—Thomas Hylland Eriksen, University of Oslo
"Goodale's meditation on human rights through the prism of culture pulls off a compelling discussion of the ways universalism and relativism continue to define international human rights. He offers a fascinating history of the political deployment of the term culture, as well as its use and abuse in national and international human rights struggles."—Victoria Sanford, City University of New York

Suitable for general readers yet intellectually challenging, the book illustrates how to thrive in unfamiliar cultures by understanding and tapping into the stress management mechanisms used by the people who live there.

The book begins by refuting the notion that professional life interacts with culture only at the level of etiquette. Distinguishing between rule-based and relationship-based cultures, the author examines the roles of authority, individualism, competition, security, negotiation, contracts, supervision, lifestyle, and even humor in different cultures. He shows how different concepts of time, space, information, and wealth shape everyday life across cultures. The book concludes with a comprehensive reading list for more than one hundred countries.

Must read for expartiates
By SMEKA
Wonderful book. Must read for people work in multi-cultural work environments. Majority of S&P 500 companies are multi-national firms. Two thirds of the multi-national firm make their earnings outside US. Even if you are outside US you may work in other places like Germany, China or England. This book gives big picture on cultural aspects of the life. One of the example, author distinguishes mono chronic societies like US and poly chronic societies in the Asia where mass thinking dominates. If you are a student from east and going for studies in the US, you must know the invisible boundaries and personal space among friends and how ferociously independent Americans are. had I known when I was a college student, I shouldn't have upset some of my old friends. Better learn through books like these before venturing into other cultures. May be not a perfect in all aspect but definitely great introduction to other cultures.

I've recommended this book to hundreds of people!
By Harriet Cannon, author of Mixed Blessings: A guide to Multicultural and Multiethnic Relationships
I have had this book for several years and it is still one of my all time favorite intercultural reference books. Mr Hooker does the best job I have ever seen of going deep and explaining clearly some important skills necessary to survive and thrive while working internationally. He titrates the core information from long term leaders in the international business-cross cultural studies field and gives thoughtful stories-examples that are very human. And he isn't hampered by the fear of offending those who remain always politically correct. I have been in the intercultural counseling field for 25 years, there are newer books but none better than this one.

Behind the Bamboo Curtain: China, Vietnam, and the World beyond Asia (Cold War International History Project)From Brand: Stanford Univer

Based on new archival research in many countries, this volume broadens the context of the U.S. intervention in Vietnam. Its primary focus is on relations between China and Vietnam in the mid-twentieth century; but the book also deals with China's relations with Cambodia, U.S. dealings with both China and Vietnam, French attitudes toward Vietnam and China, and Soviet views of Vietnam and China. Contributors from seven countries range from senior scholars and officials with decades of experience to young academics just finishing their dissertations. The general impact of this work is to internationalize the history of the Vietnam War, going well beyond the long-standing focus on the role of the United States.

Review
"A model anthology, these cross-referenced essays find unity in substantiation of the editor's conclusion that during the Vietnam Was, ideology 'could not trump differences in political culture and style' or divergent national interests between Communist allies, as disagreement and discord raged behind the Bamboo Curtain."—Pacific Affairs

"This book is certainly long-awaited and should refine, deepen, and change our understanding of the Vietnam War... All the chapters are well-written, cutting-edge and worth reading."—The China Review

"This addition to the growing literature of the Vietnam War is long overdue."—CHOICE

"This volume marks the first time that top Chinese scholars have joined with leading U.S. and European scholars on this topic. Because of this important work, a number of issues surrounding the U.S. war in Vietnam will need to be reconsidered."—Odd Arne Westad, Professor of International History and Director of the Cold War Studies Centre, London School of Economics

"Behind the Bamboo Curtain is an important collection of essays on Sino-Vietnamese relations during the Cold War An excellent contribution from a Vietnamese historian and well-documented chapters on Soviet and French policy further augment the importance of the volume. The contributors make extensive use of primary documents from the United States, the People's Republic of China, Vietnam, and Russia and offer authoritative analyses." —The Journal of Cold War Studies
"Behind the Bamboo Curtain is a decidedly international effort. It began life as a conference organized jointly by the University of Hong Kong and the Cold War International History PRoject in Washington, DC and was subsequently transformed, through the rare skill of the editor, PRicilla Roberts, into a coherent volume addressing the complex interactions among China, Vietnam, the Soviet Union, France, and the United States form the early 1950s to 1975." —Cold War History
