Comparative Peace Processes in Latin America (Stanford Woodrow Wilson Center Press Series)From Brand: Stanford University Press

This book is about ending guerrilla conflicts in Latin America through political means. It is about peace processes, aimed at securing an end to military hostilities in the context of agreements that touch on some of the principal political, economic, social, and ethnic imbalances that led to conflict in the first place.

The book presents a carefully structured comparative analysis of six Latin American countries—Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Colombia, and Peru—which experienced guerrilla warfare that outlasted the end of the Cold War. The book explores in detail the unique constellation of national and international events that allowed some wars to end in negotiated settlement, one to end in virtual defeat of the insurgents, and the others to rage on.

The aim of the book is to identify the variables that contribute to the success or failure of a peace dialogue. Though the individual case studies deal with dynamics that have allowed for or impeded successful negotiations, the contributors also examine comparatively such recurrent dilemmas as securing justice for victims of human rights abuses, reforming the military and police forces, and reconstructing the domestic economy.

Serving as a bridge between the distinct literatures on democratization in Latin America and on conflict resolution, the book underscores the reciprocal influences that peace processes and democratic transition have on each other, and the ways democratic “space” is created and political participation enhanced by means of a peace dialogue with insurgent forces.

The case studies—by country and issue specialists from Latin America, the United States, and Europe—are augmented by commentaries of senior practitioners most directly involved in peace negotiations, including United Nations officials, former peace advisers, and activists from civil society.

Review
"Editor Arnson and 19 collaborators. . . assess the factors that contribute to a nation-state's capacity to reconstruct a functioning and more democratic society after that society has been riven by internal armed conflict. . . The volume has a high degree of internal consistency among the case studies, and Arnson provides both a clear introduction and an insightful conclusion. Recommended."—J. A. Rhodes, CHOICE

"This is a valuable collection, well organized and professionally edited."—Terrorism and Political Violence

"There is, in short, a great deal in this book that will be of interest. It will be a useful addition to the all-too-small literature on successful peace processes, as well as offering new comparative insights to the literature on the countries concerned."

Civil Society: Old Images, New Visions, by John Keane

It is only a decade ago that the eighteenth-century distinction between civil society and the state seemed old-fashioned, an object of cynicism, even of outright hostility. In this important new book, John Keane shows how, in a wholly unexpected reversal of fortunes, this antiquated distinction has since become voguish among politicians, academics, journalists, business leaders, relief agencies and citizens' organizations. John Keane examines the various sources and phases of the dramatic world-wide popularization of the term. He traces its reappearance in a wide range of contexts - from China to Tunisia, from South Africa to the emerging European Union - and clarifies the conflicting grammars and vocabularies of the language of civil society. Considerable care is taken to highlight the different possible meanings of the distinction between civil society and the state. Keane also takes the reader into previously uncharted intellectual territory by demonstrating that the civil society perspective contains unharnessed potentials: that it is possible to develop bold new images of civil society that alter the ways in which we think about matters such as power, property, violence, politics, publicity and democracy. Written with style and imagination, this important book by John Keane will be of great interest to students and scholars in politics, media studies, sociology, social and political theory, and to a broader public audience interested in the central debates and political developments of our time.

Balance of Power: Theory and Practice in the 21st CenturyFrom Brand: Stanford University Press

Since the 16th century, balance of power politics have profoundly influenced international relations. But in recent years—with the sudden disappearance of the Soviet Union, growing power of the United States, and increasing prominence of international institutions—many scholars have argued that balance of power theory is losing its relevance. This book examines the current position and future of balance of power dynamics in international politics.

In this book, prominent scholars pay special attention to the theoretical and historical criticisms of balance of power theory while empirically assessing its validity at both global and regional levels. The volume also looks at systemic factors favoring or hindering a return to balance of power politics. It evaluates the challenges posed by subnational actors, such as terrorist groups, and weapons of mass destruction to international order. Further, it examines the relevance of balance of power axioms in selected regions: Western Europe, Eastern Europe, East Asia, South Asia, and Latin America.

Off Stage/On Display: Intimacy and Ethnography in the Age of Public CultureFrom Brand: Stanford University Press

Why are public identities so predictably, and often so radically, different from identities that flourish in realms of collective intimacy? Why does belonging to a group, knowing about it, or displaying its qualities to others require that certain aspects of identification be denied—not because they are false or stereotypical, but because they are thought to be accurate and indispensable signs of membership?

In Off Stage/On Display, ten scholars with diverse geographical, theoretical, and topical interests take a close, critical look at the vexed relationship between public identities and the intimate spheres in which they are made. They ask how scholars and activists can engage more creatively with problems encountered on this awkward terrain, which is now global both in location and political significance. Their answers, careful and suggestive, point to more effective strategies for representing aspects of identification that cannot be easily shown or, in an age of mass mediation, easily concealed.

Review
"The problem of intimacy and mediation is a fascinating and vital one for contemporary anthropology, particularly as more and more ethnographers come to engage with public cultural forms and processes. To the best of my knowledge, no other work has tackled this problem in such depth and from such a variety of perspectives. This work fills a significant gap in the literature on the ethnography of public culture." —Dominic Boyer,Cornell University

"This is a book of major importance in relation to the intellectual, practical, and political problems that have beset the field of anthropology. It recognizes the dangerous politics of cultural revelation, but insists that the alternative—the refusal to recognize cultural realities in favor of a bland discourse of identities—is unsatisfactory." —Sherry Ortner,Professor of Anthropology, Columbia University

Their answers, careful and suggestive, point to more effective strategies for representing aspects of identification that cannot be easily shown or, in an age of mass mediation, easily concealed.

From the Back Cover
“The problem of intimacy and mediation is a fascinating and vital one for contemporary anthropology, particularly as more and more ethnographers come to engage with public cultural forms and processes. To the best of my knowledge, no other work has tackled this problem in such depth and from such a variety of perspectives. This work fills a significant gap in the literature on the ethnography of public culture.” —Dominic Boyer,Cornell University
“This is a book of major importance in relation to the intellectual, practical, and political problems that have beset the field of anthropology. It recognizes the dangerous politics of cultural revelation, but insists that the alternative—the refusal to recognize cultural realities in favor of a bland discourse of identities—is unsatisfactory.” —Sherry Ortner,Professor of Anthropology, Columbia University

The Antigone Complex: Ethics and the Invention of Feminine Desire (Cultural Memory in the Present), by Cecilia Sjoholm

What if psychoanalysis had chosen Antigone rather than Oedipus? This book traces the relation between ethics and desire in important philosophical texts that focus on femininity and use Antigone as their model. It shows that the notion of feminine desire is conditioned by a view of women as being prone to excesses and deficiencies in relation to ethical norms and rules. Sjöholm explains Mary Wollstonecraft's work, as well as readings of Antigone by G.W.F. Hegel, Martin Heidegger, Luce Irigaray, Jacques Lacan, and Judith Butler.

This book introduces the concept of the "Antigone complex" in order to illuminate the obscure and multifaceted question of feminine desire, which has given rise to the fascination of generations of philosophers and other theoreticians, as well as readers and spectators. At the same time the book argues for a notion of desire that is intrinsically related to ethics. The ethical question posed by Antigone, and explored in the book, is: what determines those actions that one must do, as opposed to those that one ought to do?

Agnotology: The Making and Unmaking of IgnoranceFrom Brand: Stanford University Press

What don't we know, and why don't we know it? What keeps ignorance alive, or allows it to be used as a political instrument? Agnotology—the study of ignorance—provides a new theoretical perspective to broaden traditional questions about "how we know" to ask: Why don't we know what we don't know? The essays assembled in Agnotology show that ignorance is often more than just an absence of knowledge; it can also be the outcome of cultural and political struggles. Ignorance has a history and a political geography, but there are also things people don't want you to know ("Doubt is our product" is the tobacco industry slogan). Individual chapters treat examples from the realms of global climate change, military secrecy, female orgasm, environmental denialism, Native American paleontology, theoretical archaeology, racial ignorance, and more. The goal of this volume is to better understand how and why various forms of knowing do not come to be, or have disappeared, or have become invisible.

Review
"Anyone who thinks ignorance is nobodys business has a lot to learn from these provocative essays. The distinguished authors offer compelling evidence that what we do not know is every bit as much a product of human choice and ingenuity as what we choose to know. Agnotology rescues ignorance from the no-mans-land of unexamined social phenomena. It makes us ask what is at stake when we dont know things that are plainly before our eyes. This is a book for every thinking citizen."
—Sheila Jasanoff, Harvard University

"In the past years there have been few new fields of research as timely as agnotology. Many a time one is puzzled by the widespread ignorance of some of the greatest challenges mankind faces today, be it global warming, the way to the Iraq war, or the global tobacco epidemic. Agnotology might very well be the tool to delve into the great black holes of modern knowledge and also find a way out." —Andrian Kreye, arts and ideas editor, Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Germany

great book about a little studied, but exciting, field
By Francesc
While epistemology is related to the creation and justification of knowledge, agnotology is the study of the mechanisms which lead to the lack of particular knowledge in different cultures. This book answers the question why we don't know, and still more important, why we don't know that we don't know. The book includes brilliant articles covering a relatively large period in history. This is an enormous contribution to a little studied, but exciting, field.

Agnotological examination of the critique of Agnotology.
By Kindle Customer
This book is a 5 star book. It would have a five star rating if not for a couple of people suffering from their own brand of ignorance. The Bartolo 2 star critique is one of complaint about form or language. As one of the college professors of english that I had said "If you can talk to someone and they understand what you say you are using good language". This person's critique is "form over content" which is admitted to. The other 2 star critique by Carolast2013 is blatantly political. The quote from this critique "A small, politically-connected clique deliberately uses defective studies to falsely blame tobacco for diseases that are really caused by infection" is one of the reasons we need this book about IGNORANCE. Ayn Rand, the hero of the right wing, railed on the federal government saying that they had a conspiracy against the tobacco companies. She eventually died of lung cancer from her two pack a day habit. She ended up of Social Security & Medicare, two programs that she also railed on all her life. If you are interested
in the GOP war on science I suggest you read this book.

Rebellion Now and Forever: Mayas, Hispanics, and Caste War Violence in Yucatan, 1800–1880, by Terry Rugeley

This book explores the origins, process, and consequences of forty years of nearly continual political violence in southeastern Mexico. Rather than recounting the well-worn narrative of the Caste War, it focuses instead on how four decades of violence helped shape social and political institutions of the Mexican southeast. Rebellion Now and Forever looks at Yucatán's famous Caste War from the perspective of the vast majority of Hispanics and Maya peasants who did not join in the great ethnic rebellion of 1847. It shows how the history of nonrebel territory was as dramatic and as violent as the front lines of the Caste War, and of greater significance for the larger evolution of Mexican society. The work explores political violence not merely as a method and process, but also as a molder of subsequent institutions and practices.

Review
"[T]his book is a godsend. Thanks to the author's tireless research, we now know a great deal more than we did about the Caste War, the failings of the liberal reform and imperial rule, and how the endless cycle of violence helped shape future generations."—Allen Wells, The Historian

"An ambitious enterprise, Rebellion Now and Forever provides a comprehensive account of the evolution of post-colonial government and politics across the Yucatán's entire territory, not just its rebel eastern margins or compact north-western growth pole . . . [T]he book will appeal most obviously to Yucatecans, who will discover their antepasados, and to seasoned Mexicanists, who will welcome the most comprehensive and deeply researched nineteenth-century regional history written to date. More generally, those seeking to understand the origins and consequences of the Caste War, or the impact of henequen monoculture and peonage, or how the revolution would be received in Mexico's most distant and different territory, would be foolish to ignore this extraordinarily complex and courageous book."—Guy Thomson, Journal of Latin American Studies

"A highly engaging and readable work that will surely be an indispensable reference for students of the the Caste War and 19th-Century Mexico."—P.R. Sullivan, Choice

"Rebellion Now and Forever is an extraordinary piece of scholarship—for its breadth and depth, its originality, its bold approach, its thorough documentation, its clear and fluid writing, and, perhaps most of all, the author's concern for and understanding of his topic. It is an important book that not only contributes to our historical knowledge of southeastern Mexico but also challenges the conclusions of other authors and raises new and provocative theories of its own."—Paul Vanderwood, San Diego State University

The Soul of Design: Harnessing the Power of Plot to Create Extraordinary Products, by Robert Austin, Lee Devin

What makes the Apple iPhone cool? Bang & Olufsen and Samsung's televisions beautiful? Any of a wide variety of products and services special? The answer is not simply functionality or technology, for competitors' products are often as good.

The Soul of Design explores the uncanny power of some products to grab and hold attention—to create desire. To understand what sets a product apart in this way, authors Lee Devin and Robert Austin push past personal taste and individual response to adopt a more conceptual approach. They carefully explore the hypothesis that there is something within a "special" product that makes it—well, special. They argue that this je ne sais quoi arises from "plot"—the shape that emerges as a product or service arouses and then fulfills expectations. Marketing a special product is, then, a matter of helping its audience perceive its plot and comprehend its qualities.

Devin and Austin provide keys to understanding why some products and services stand out in a crowd and how the companies that make them create these hits. Part One of the book introduces the authors' definition of plot in this context; Part Two breaks down the components needed to build a plot; Part Three describes what makes a plot coherent; Part Four takes on the challenges of making coherent products and services attractive to consumers. Part Four also presents detailed casework, which shows how innovators and makers have successfully brought special products to market.

Readers will come away with a sensible and clear approach to conceiving of artful products and services. This book will help managers and designers think about engaging with plot, taking aesthetic factors into account to provide consumers with more special things.

Review
"Their approach is wildly unconventional, as they consider extraordinary products in the context of art, complete with the trappings of plot, trajectory, and resonance. . . It's the latest in a series of books about design thinking in business, but it brings in a fresh perspective."—BizEd

"I love this book. It will have a great impact on the discussion of design's application to management, shifting the conversation in some very important ways. Devin and Austin stretch our minds to teach us that good managers design, good designers manage, and good workers are whole human beings with both their left and right brains engaged."—Fred Collopy, Case Western Reserve University and coeditor of Managing as Designing

"Many books try to rationalize the design process—make designers look at the world as managers. This book helps managers to see the world as creatives do. This perspective, the idea that magic must have its space for companies to succeed today, can propel a business. Executives should put their spreadsheet projections of the future aside for a bit and read this book instead. It will teach them how to create the future."—Rasmus Bech Hansen, Brand Expert and Strategy Director, Venturethree

"What a brilliant idea: To take the practical principles of the earliest 'How To' guide, Aristotle's Poetics, and apply them to a modern business model! We in the theater know how to tell a story and, to us, Aristotle is as practical a guide as Warren Buffet is in the investment world. Readers will be entertained and led by The Soul of Design."—Anne Cattaneo, Dramaturg, Lincoln Center Theater

"Managers and marketers too often forget to take their product seriously. Austin and Devin help them to refocus on the commercial power of what Kant would call the product in itself. Their philosophical approach helps us understand the inner force in very special products, such as Vipp's gorgeous trash bins or Bang and Olufson's mind blowing televisions. Leaving the mainstream of applied psychology and sociology, so familiar to the study of business, this book decodes of the mysterious and unpredictable 'WOW factor."'—Pierre Guillet de Monthoux, Copenhagen Business School and author of The Art Firm
"This book is about love—the love for products. You don't get love from your customers by asking them what they like. Love is about proposing stories that go beyond expectations—as this book teaches. It will help us to pen more stories in the form of special things."—Roberto Verganti, author of Design-Driven Innovation

A very special book
By Diego Fontdevila
Rob Austin and Lee Devin have changed the way I see the world, again. As they did in Artful Making, in The Soul of Design they bravely challenge the accepted ways of reflecting on and appraising innovative work.

In this book, they offer powerful insight into creative processes, and better yet, weave a precise new language to help us think about it. The concepts of Plot, the inner binding between the parts of a made thing; Coherence, the conceptual integrity of those parts as a whole; and Resonance, both the internal quality that makes the whole bigger than the sum of its parts and the external affective impact that the made thing has on people; all these have become a beautiful addition to my creative work toolkit.

The authors have given us, to put it in their own words, a very special thing indeed.

The Soul of Design
By Adam Koplan
You'll never look at a trash can quite the same way. Lee Devin and Robert Austin continue the collaboration they developed in Artful Making with an insightful new work that examines successful product design, and...Artistotelian story structure. Like the old Reese's Peanutbutter Cup commercial, these seemingly different strands of creativity prove to be "two great tastes that go great together." The authors make a compelling case that the central element that distinguishes any highly desirable product from its peers is the way that the product contains a story and has a "plot." For readers who enjoy books that exist at the cross section of liberal arts and good business practice, such as the Heaths' Made to Stick or Tom Kelly and the Ideo team's The Art of Innovation: Lessons in Creativity, this book is worth a close look. Like the books I just mentioned The Soul of Design is chock full of anecdotes but it differs in its more academic approach to analyzing plot. The rigor of thought, while sometimes dense, is made understandable with visuals and accessible examples (i.e. The Sixth Sense) and is ultimately deeply rewarding because the analysis goes deep and has wide implications. Using the authors' conclusions, it's not hard to apply their paradigm beyond products to ideas, practices, and organizational structures. I highly recommend this book.

An innovative approach to innovation
By David D. Mooberry
My 35-year career at DuPont had a strong focus on innovation and leads me to believe that innovation, especially in the sciences, has been the primary driving force for economic and cultural progress over the past century. And so a library-full of "how to" and "what did they do" books have been written on the subject. Now Lee Devin and Robert Austin have broken the mold with this exciting new look at how innovation can be stimulated by the arts, especially theatre. Instead of teaching about the old focuses such as market share they bring us "Special Things" (would Steve Jobs have loved this) and "plot". Read about plot, coherence and resonance; experience a new approach to innovation of all flavors. Five stars!

Political Democracy and Ethnic Diversity in Modern European HistoryFrom Brand: Stanford University Press

This volume brings together scholars from the United States and Europe to examine the history of one of the great challenges to European politics today—the relationship between political democracy and ethnic diversity. The major questions posed by the authors are: is ethnic homogeneity a condition of democracy, or is it a historical coincidence that modern democracies seem to prosper in ethnically homogeneous societies? How relevant is ethnic diversity or homogeneity in explaining the success or failure of democracy in Europe? And how did democracies cope with ethnic diversity, in comparison with other political systems—empires and modern dictatorships in particular?

The answers may be unsettling: homogeneity and diversity have both proven to be destructive forces in history. Whereas Western European democracies incorporated these ethnic differences into their political system, the introduction of democracy in Central and Eastern Europe was seriously hampered, both by ethnic conflicts and by efforts to homogenize the region ethnically. This is the first book in which the fate of democracy is directly related to ethnic diversity.

Review
"The scholarship in this book is first rate. In this fascinating volume, a group of distinguished scholars test the proposition that ethnic homogeneity advances democratic development, by examining European development from the late eighteenth century to the present. Bringing both theoretical and historical evidence to bear, these essays make an important contribution to the dialogue on this topic." —Norman Naimark,Stanford University
