Learning from Work: Designing Organizations for Learning and Communication (Stanford Business Books), by Anne Beamish

Gaining a thorough understanding of today's complex workplace is of vital importance to both business professionals and academics—not only because it leads to a deeper understanding of individual motivation in the work context, but also because it reveals ways in which work practices can be improved. This requirement for both understanding and action has become especially pressing in the area of "learning in organizations" as businesses have become ever more "knowledge-based." There is now an urgent need to comprehend how people and organizations learn, and then to store and transfer the resulting new knowledge to facilitate the design of work environments and practices.

Learning from Work directly addresses this growing workplace need by examining how people communicate and learn in one of the most complex of industry structures: the automobile industry. It is the very nature of this industry's complexity that makes this study so valuable. The combination of global scale, plus the nature of the relationships between the manufacturers and the dealerships (the dealerships are independent businesses that are only loosely coupled to the manufacturers) make the barriers to communication and learning quite high, and make the solutions to overcoming them applicable in many different work environments.

Anne Beamish suggests that the only way is to increase learning and improve collaboration and communication in complex organizations is to apply design thinking. This is the only comprehensive method, she claims, that can unleash the kind of innovative and effective solutions required to overcome the inherent structural, procedural, and political barriers.

Review
"Learning from Work is an excellent example of what we miss if we do not base our organizational theories and management prescriptions on a close look at actual workplace practices. The detailed case study of car dealerships illustrates superbly the complex set of issues that influence behaviors in an organizational context, meaning that simple, rationale solutions to apparent problems may backfire because the problem is not as it initially appears. Using a design lens and adopting a multidisciplinary, multiple perspectives approach, the author is able to show us more realistic ways to create a learning organization." —Sue Newell, Bentley College and Warwick Business School

"Learning from Work is a satisfying read that sheds light on the situated nature of workplace learning. Prepackaged learning solutions don't work for good reasons—as Anne Beamish shows in this case study of automobile dealerships. Readers will see how they can use design thinking to get below the surface of learning problems and proposed solutions." —Victoria J. Marsick, Co-Director, J.M. Huber Institute for Learning in Organizations

Borderlines: The Shiftings of Gender in British Romanticism, by Susan Wolfson

Opening with the revolution-era debates of the 1790s, Borderlines reads Romantic genders across a mobile syntax, tuned to such figures as the stylized "feminine" poetess, the aberrant "masculine" woman, male poets deemed "feminine" or "unmanly," the campy male "effeminate," and hapless or strategic cross-dressers of both sexes. With fresh readings of the works, careers, and volatile receptions of Mary Wollstonecraft, Felicia Hemans, M. J. Jewsbury, Lord Byron, and John Keats, Susan Wolfson shows how senses (and sensations) of gender shape and get shaped by sign systems that prove arbitrary, fluid, and susceptible of lively transformation.

Review
"This year's most important book on gender... Wolfson's prose sparkles, and she refuses to sacrifice her delight in formalist craft to a dogmatic ideological agenda."—SEL Studies in English Literature

"Borderlines is a long-awaited study that takes the gender controversy in Romanticism and Romantic studies in an entirely new and unprecedented direction. It will inflect and inform all future discussions of the crucial and abiding issue that is its focus."—William Galperin, Rutgers University

"Indefatigable in examining blurrings of gender lines, . . . this fascinating study will engage mature students of Romanticism and feminist studies. Highly recommended [for] upper-division undergraduates through faculty." —S. A. Parker, CHOICE

"Susan Wolfson's new book is a major accomplishment. . . . rigorously historical, . . . through the sheer copiousness of her references she is able to make it clear that we have hardly outgrown the problematics of gender. Wolfson is never satisfied with the obvious binaries. These are complicated, as she shows, both by chameleonic definitions of key terms and also by constant transvaluations even where one might expect gender divisions to remain dismally stable. . . . The notes are generous and useful, concluding a book that is likewise generous and useful—not to mention subtle and spritely by turns. . . . subtlety comes both from her skill as a reader and her knowledge of gender theory." —Paul H. Fry, Modern Language Quarterly

"Wolfson's book is a major work of scholarship that everyone studying Romantic period writing will need to read. It employs no jargon, yet is a formidable book in its sustained attention to detail. Though generous in acknowledging the scholarship of others, Wolfson has trodden her own path entirely: employing her own hybrid brand of formalist and feminist critique, her idiosyncratic and playful use of language and clever way of combining the biographical with textual analysis." —Caroline Franklin, The Byron Journal
"One of the most significant contributions to the area of general Romanticism this year is Susan J. Wolfson's Borderlines: The Shiftings of Gender in British Romanticism. . . . Wolfson's incisive close readings, her thorough knowledge of the field, and the clarity with which she describes the gender debate in the Romantic period and in Romantic studies itself make Borderlines an exceptional book, and essential reading for anyone interested in the study of Romanticism." —Orianne Smith, Year's Work in English Studies
"An important book . . . the distillation of a career of scholarship, teaching, and just plain careful thinking about issues central to British Romanticism. . . . At once critically provocative and a joy to read."—The Wordsworth Circle

From the Inside Flap
Borderlines reveals how the revolution-era debates of the 1790s redefined notions of gender across the nineteenth century. With fresh readings of the works, careers, and volatile receptions of Felicia Hemans, M. J. Jewsbury, Lord Byron, and John Keats, the authors show how senses (and sensations) of gender shape and get shaped by sign systems that prove to be arbitrary, fluid, and susceptible of transformation. Complicating recent views that Romantic-era writing can be arrayed into masculinist and feminist (or proto-feminist) orders and practices, Borderlines shifts the terms of gender essence (culturally organized and supported as these are) into a more mobile, less determinate syntax—one tuned to such figures as the stylized “feminine” poetess, the aberrant “masculine” woman, the male poet deemed “feminine,” the campy “effeminate,” hapless or strategic cross-dressers of both sexes, and the variously sexed life of the soul itself. Testing large claims in local sites, and reading local events’ wider registers, Borderlines argues, in effect, that gender theory is most fully realized in action.

Cultural Intelligence: Individual Interactions Across Cultures (Stanford Business Books (Paperback)), by P. Christopher Earley, Soon Ang

In a global market where international teams, initiatives, and joint ventures are increasingly common, it is extremely important for people to integrate themselves quickly in new cultures. Effective strategies for selecting and training people on global perspectives are critical for managing businesses.

Current theories in management and psychology do not provide adequate frameworks to explain the successes or failures of people working and managing in foreign cultures. In this book, the authors develop the idea of cultural intelligence and examine its three essential facets: cognition, the ability to develop patterns from cultural cues; motivation, the desire and ability to engage others; and behavior, the capability to act in accordance with cognition and motivation.

In their presentation of this new conceptual framework, the authors provide a critical review of the existing literature. They explore the fundamental nature of cultural intelligence and its relationship to other frameworks of intelligence.

Review
"This is a very important book about a significant new concept, 'cultural intelligence' (CQ) that is sure to attract the attention of both scholars and those who are involved in the practical matters of global commerce and international affairs. The authors have amassed a considerable array of academic theories and research evidence to support their arguments for why it is essential to understand CQ and how it can be developed and used in our increasingly multi-cultural world. All of us who consider ourselves 'internationalists' need to read this book." —Lyman W. Porter,University of California, Irvine

"Cultural Intelligence provides an innovative, instructive, and engaging discussion of a question that most cultural frameworks have left in the shadows—the question of how people come to understand cultures other than their own. Few questions are of more intellectual or practical interest in this time of multicultural communities, global organizations, and culturally framed political conflict." —Michael W. Morris, Columbia University

"Intelligence is frequently understood in terms of the psychological tests so salient in the public mind. Earley and Ang broaden the scope of intelligence to include culture, and then applied cultural intelligence to numerous practical situations. This book is an indispensable companion for those who research the culture and psychology link, work across cultures, or train those who work across cultures." —Harry C. Triandis, University of Illinois,

The Man Without Content (Meridian: Crossing Aesthetics), by Giorgio Agamben

In this book, one of Italy's most important and original contemporary philosophers considers the status of art in the modern era. He takes seriously Hegel's claim that art has exhausted its spiritual vocation, that it is no longer through art that Spirit principally comes to knowledge of itself. He argues, however, that Hegel by no means proclaimed the "death of art" (as many still imagine) but proclaimed rather the indefinite continuation of art in what Hegel called a "self-annulling" mode.

With astonishing breadth and originality, the author probes the meaning, aesthetics, and historical consequences of that self-annulment. In essence, he argues that the birth of modern aesthetics is the result of a series of schisms—between artist and spectator, genius and taste, and form and matter, for example—that are manifestations of the deeper, self-negating yet self-perpetuating movement of irony.

Through this concept of self-annulment, the author offers an imaginative reinterpretation of the history of aesthetic theory from Kant to Heidegger, and he opens up original perspectives on such phenomena as the rise of the modern museum, the link between art and terror, the natural affinity between "good taste" and its perversion, and kitsch as the inevitable destiny of art in the modern era. The final chapter offers a dazzling interpretation of Dürer's Melancholia in the terms that the book has articulated as its own.

The Man Without Content will naturally interest those who already prize Agamben's work, but it will also make his name relevant to a whole new audience—those involved with art, art history, the history of aesthetics, and popular culture.

From the Inside Flap
In this book, one of Italy’s most important and original contemporary philosophers considers the status of art in the modern era. He takes seriously Hegel’s claim that art has exhausted its spiritual vocation, that it is no longer through art that Spirit principally comes to knowledge of itself. He argues, however, that Hegel by no means proclaimed the “death of art” (as many still imagine) but proclaimed rather the indefinite continuation of art in what Hegel called a “self-annulling” mode.
Through this concept of self-annulment, the author offers an imaginative reinterpretation of the history of aesthetic theory from Kant to Heidegger, and he opens up original perspectives on such phenomena as the rise of the modern museum, the link between art and terror, the natural affinity between “good taste” and its perversion, and kitsch as the inevitable destiny of art in the modern era. The final chapter offers a dazzling interpretation of Dürer’s Melancholia in the terms that the book has articulated as its own.
The Man Without Content will naturally interest those who already prize Agamben’s work, but it will also make his name relevant to a whole new audience—those involved with art, art history, the history of aesthetics, and popular culture.

Genial but a bit too German
By Amazon Customer
This is the first book by Agamben I have read, and it's quite an impressive encounter. Agamben has a lively historical imagination, and seems comfortable in tracing the manner in which art and the aesthetic has shifted in status and situation from the middle ages to the 20th century. When Agamben is using his native Italian intelligence, he's first-rate. However, when the names Hegel or Heidegger are invoked, the discussion tends to become arid, vaporous, and unnecessarily enamoured of Greek etymons. Frankly, I wish Agamben had never read either of the H's - too much teutonic fog dims even his Latin acuity.

Agamben's "aesthetics"
By Byron the Bulb
Giorgio Agamben is quite simply one of the most profound living philosophers and essayists, and this is one of his most illuminating texts. In it, Agamben takes up the question of the status of the work of art in capitalist culture. Much of his critique draws upon Heidegger's later essays on the relationship between technology and art ("The Question Concerning Technology", "What are Poets For?"), attempting to explore the implications of Heidegger's concern that art may have already become "standing reserve." However, this book owes as much to Hannah Arendt's _The Human Condition_, especially her reading of the history of political theory through her trichotomy of labor, work, and action. Throughout his book, however, Agamben takes these ideas in startling new directions, always seeking out new connections between concepts and pushing them to their limits. He also writes in a reasonably clear style, avoiding much of the word-play of contemporary continental philosophy, although it probably won't be very accessible to readers without some understanding of recent continental philosophy. All in all, this might be the most significant contribution to the philosophy of art since Adorno's _Aesthetic Theory_.

An Engaging Treatise on Aesthetics
By Clarissa's Blog
The philosophy of aesthetics normally does not interest me very much. However, like everything else written by this great thinker, Giorgio Agamben's The Man Without Content overcame my initial resistance to the subject of aesthetics.

For Agamben, aesthetics presents both a great impediment to the fulfillment of human destiny and the only hope of achieving it. He begins his fascinating study by discussing the relatively recent origins of the idea of good taste and aesthetic sensibility. It is not until the mid-XVIIth century, says Agamben, that the distinction between good taste and bad taste appears. It is at that same point in history that a strict boundary between art and non-art begins to be drawn. From that moment, a work of art increasingly transforms for the spectators into an opportunity to practice their good taste and exercise their aesthetic judgement.

The real difference between art and a non-artistic result of our productivity lies in art's central capacity to bring into being something radically new. Art's privileged status, says Agamben, is a result of art's power to create something out of nothing. Today, we have unfortunately forgotten about this crucial ability of art to create something out of nothing. Agamben points out that the tradition of storing art in museums and art collections of private individuals robs art of its role as an act of creation. The moment you attempt to contain art in a museum or a collection, you transform it into an occasion for aesthetic enjoyment or, as happens more and more often, an opportunity for the spectators to practice their aesthetic judgement. Thus, art stops being a subject and becomes an object. It is only valuable as long as we can turn it to our use as a trigger of our critical analysis.

The reason why this new attitude to art was formed lies in the changing attitude towards work. We all know that the Greeks did not hold working in a very high regard (to say the very least). According to the Greeks' way of thinking, one had to deserve the right to be considered a human being. The way to achieve that was by making oneself as different as possible from an animal. While animals are ruled by their biology, human beings can attempt to free themselves from this enslavement to physiological processes. This vision of work vs art is completely transformed in subsequent historic periods. With Locke, Adam Smith and Marx, work and productivity become the measure of human endeavor. The legend of Balzac who asked to be tied to an armchair in order to remain as productive as possible continues today in the perennial efforts of artists to keep producing regularly and always achieving higher quality of their product. According to Agamben, this is a very dangerous thing to happen because what we lose as a result of this approach to art is a place where we can truly come to existence as human beings.

This is a fascinating book but I have to warn potential readers that a significant chunk of it is dedicated to a very painstaking analysis of the Ancient Greek terms central to Agamben's analysis. In my opinion, this analysis of terminology employed by Greek philosophers becomes quite redundant, which I consider to be the main weakness of The Man Without Content.

The Assassination of Yitzhak Rabin, by Yoram Peri

The three shots fired into the back of Israel’s prime minister, Yitzhak Rabin, on the night of November 4, 1995, were a blow to Israel’s social body. The shock, horror, and pain caused by the murder found direct and overwhelming expression at the funeral and memorial ceremonies held in Jerusalem, attended by most of the world’s leaders.

This book deals with the social and political developments in Israel in the painful process of decolonization from the occupied territories, following the late 1980s Palestinian Intifada and its aftermath. Fifteen distinguished contributors from a range of disciplinary viewpoints—historical, psychological, anthropological, political, and cultural—survey the various reactions to the assassination and analyze its ramifications and repercussions, creating a powerful mosaic of Israel with the assassination at its center.

The fear that the murder would lead to civil war did not materialize. In fact, with hindsight it seems that the prime minister was a scapegoat, a victim of a deeply divided society split not only over the issue of peace with its neighbors but, more profoundly, over the construction of Israel’s collective identity and consciousness. The assassination showed how easy it is for religious fundamentalists to ignore democratic rules and how militant nationalists will resort to violence to prevent the surrender of parts of the Holy Land.

The strength of these elements of society was manifested in the general elections of 1996, when Rabin’s adherents lost to the nationalist-clerical group. Paradoxically, the reaction to the assassination also revealed Israel’s growing desire to pursue the peace process, and when Prime Minister Netanyahu failed to do so, he was replaced before his term ended. Less than four years after the assassination, the Israelis put the reigns of government back into the hands of Rabin’s successors, who promised to continue in his path.

With the road to peace lengthy, painful, and hazardous, have the fanatics learned a lesson from the aftermath of Rabin’s murder? Will he be the last victim? Will Israeli democracy survive the agony of shrinking to the tiny size of the pre-1967 boundaries? Will Israeli society develop into a Western democratic and enlightened model, or will it become a reactionary, ethnocentric, xenophobic backwater? This volume does not propose definitive answers to these questions, but it reflects on them in very thoughtful and knowledgeable ways.

"The Assassination of Yitzhak Rabin provides the most comprehensive scholarly analysis of Rabin's assassination that is available to date. For those wishing to understand the causes of the assassination and the reactions to it, it is indispensable. It also provides a wealth of valuable insights for anyone interested in the social and cultural processes of national mourning, grief, and commemoration. Finally, the book offers an outstanding example of how contributions from a variety of disciplinary perspectives can explore a topic of common concern. One can only hope that more such interdisciplinary efforts will appear in future."—Dov Waxman, Bowdoin College

Quelling the People: The Military Suppression of the Beijing Democracy Movement, by Timothy Brook

This is a riveting, day-by-day, hour-by-hour reconstruction of the massacre in Tiananmen Square on June 3-4, 1989, as well as of the crucial events in Beijing during the previous weeks that largely precipitated the massacre. The author focuses on the army—the People's Liberation Army—which, with its motto "Serve the People," had always prided itself on its close ties to the civilian population. What were the intentions of the Chinese government in mobilizing the army against civilians? Why did the troops act as they did, and what does this say about how the army would act on the next such occasion? How does the military suppression of the democracy movement help us to understand China's current predicament over democratization and human rights?

From Publishers Weekly
Eyewitness reports, hospital records and student documents buttress this authoritative study of the birth, development and sudden death of the 1989 Democracy movement in China. The book's centerpiece is a detailed reconstruction of the Tiananmen Square massacre on June 3 and 4, 1989. Brook explains the catalytic effect of General Secretary Hu Yaobang's death, defines the rationale behind the student hunger strikes and the goverment's imposition of martial law, and describes the styrofoam statue of the Goddess of Democracy as a "brilliant gesture" on the students' part. Brook establishes that between two and three thousand citizzens of Beijing were slaughtered by the People's Army, which was acting on orders from the highest civilian authority (i.e., Deng Xiaoping), and that at one point China was on the brink of civil war as army units threatened to turn against one another. Brook has uncovered detailed material revealing how government propagandists attempted to whitewash the bloody events of Tiananmen Square even as the long process of arrests and repression began. Brook is associate professor of history at the University of Toronto. From Library Journal
In 1989, the Tiananmen Square massacre shocked the world. While publications on the event are numerous, most have concentrated on analyzing the political system, evaluating the strategy of the student-led democratic movement, and speculating on the future of China. Brook's book has a more moderate goal, setting out to "establish a reasonable record of the historical incident" and to "chronicle and evaluate the use of violence against civilians." With the tight control of official media of the Chinese government and the numerous, often contradictory eyewitness accounts, the author seeks to avoid the deflation of the government's distorted reports as well as the inflation of the activists' emotional accounts. He has worked with newspaper articles, eyewitness memoirs, interviews, and government documents to reconstruct a fairly detailed chronicle of the incident distinguished by the craft and objectivity of a historian. Recommended for academic libraries.

Review
"The author has done a magnificent job of reconstructing the military mobilization in Beijing and the role of the People's Liberation Army in the bloody suppression of the Chinese people's movement. . . . A moving book that vividly displays the extraordinary bravery of the residents of Beijing."—Pacific Affairs

"The author skillfully weaves eyewitness accounts into a smoothly flowing narrative. Two maps of Beijing assist the reader in following the actions described, and there is a seful chronology of events. The work should interest both generalists and specialists, and spans the disciplines of history, political science, and sociology."—The China Quarterly

"It took three and a half years for Brook to collect the pieces of this tragic puzzle. The result: a unique and vigorous study that does not try to find out 'who was wrong and who was right,' but concentrates on simple facts."—Liberation (Paris)

A true historical, non-sensational view of the tragedy.
By Read Taylor
The Tiananmen square tragedy can be analyzed, according to Brook, as the result of a single order from the CCP for the PLA to attack civilians. The PLA members and leaders could individually question the order, but once it was given, the order commanded the PLA as a unit to uphold its mandate to protect the CCP from all enemies, foreign and domestic. Therefore, the soldiers, given only deadly weapons with which to protect the party, necessarily did so with deadly force. Unlike other analyses of tragedies that have been produced recently, such as Iris Chang's 'Rape of Nanking' with all its errors, this is an actual work of history that traces the order to attack back to its origin, and therefore answers the painful question of how the party claiming to be the dictatorship of the proletariat could through its military might against its own people. Avoiding sensationalism, Brook analyzes what happened and why without overstepping the bounds of reasonable conjecture. Overall, this is an excellent book for anyone interested in understanding the tragedy of May Fifth.

Algeria Cuts: Women and Representation, 1830 to the Present (Cultural Memory in the Present), by Ranjana Khanna

Algeria Cuts discusses the figure of woman, both under colonial rule in Algeria and within the postcolonial independent nation-state. It is an interdisciplinary project that spans fine art, film, colonial and legal policy, manifestos, prose fiction, and theoretical and philosophical texts concerning the relationship between France and Algeria. Khanna investigates gendered representation, identification, and justice, and in the process, calls into question the ways in which conventional disciplinary frameworks foreclose certain avenues of reflection while foregrounding others. Algeria Cuts seeks to understand Algeria and Algerian women as a philosophical site that facilitates an understanding of justice and the pursuit of feminism.

Review
"Brilliantly argued and powerfully written, Algeria Cuts also benefits from a generous thirty images, an enigmatic cover by Zineb Sedira, and fifty pages of meticulous footnotes. It is a beautiful book as well as an urgent one, and a massive contribution to the postcolonial field, as well as to the emerging area of Algerian cultural studies."—Guy Austin, Interventions: International Journal of Postcolonial Studies

"Algeria Cuts is a timely and challenging reflection on how women elude and confound direct representation in literature, the arts, politics, law, and justice under conditions deeply inflected by colonialism and its aftermath. Pursuing the implication of this representational disruption for an ethics and a practice of transnational feminism, Khanna meticulously resists disciplinary strictures and the predictable conclusions they yield. Her analyses of mock trials, film, painting, manifestos, prose fiction and installations illuminate the multifarious junctures where gender disturbs representation in Algerian texts and contexts. While the focus here is on Algeria, this important book's insights and novel interdisciplinary method reach well beyond its immediate context." —Natalie Melas, Cornell University

"In this multidisciplinary book, Khanna describes the ways in which women have been represented in Algerian history, from the onset of French colonialism in 1830 until today Khanna knows the history, relates it engagingly, and describes human events movingly." —CHOICE

"Khanna evokes an inspiring imagery and provides a solid theoretical discussion for the book's gender perspective." —Journal of Peace Research

Jewish Dogs: An Image and Its Interpreters (Stanford Studies in Jewish History and C), by Kenneth Stow

Jewish Dogs is not a study of "anti-Semitism" or "anti-Judaism." Instead, this book argues that to anchor claims of supersession, Catholics have viewed Jews as metaphoric—and sometimes not so metaphoric—dogs. The dog has for millennia been the focus of impurity, and Catholicism fosters doctrines of physical purity that go hand in hand with those of ritual purity. The purity is that of the "one loaf" spoken of by Paul in Corinthians that is, at once, the Eucharist and the collective Christian Corpus, the body of the faithful. Paul views this "loaf" as physically corruptible, and as John Chrysostom said at the close of the fourth century, the greatest threat to the loaf's purity are the Jews. They are the dogs who wish to steal the bread that belongs exclusively to the children. Eventually, Jews were said to attack the "loaf" through ritual murder and attempts to defile the Host itself; the victim of ritual murder is identified with the Host, as is common in Catholic martyrdom. Pope Pius IX still spoke of Jewish dogs barking throughout the streets of Rome in 1871. Other Catholic clergy were dismayed. This book is thus as much a study of Catholic doctrinal history as it is a study of Jews.

Review
"Exploring the Catholic doctrine of physical purity, the purity of the 'one loaf' spoken of by Paul in Corinthians and its interpretation by John Chrysostom, Stow provides a framework to understand Spanish early modern anti-Jewish attitudes and utterances so prevalent in 16th- and 17th-century cultural productions."—The Year's Work in Modern Language Studies

"Raising unsettling questions about contemporary Christian attitudes toward Jews and Judaism despite the conciliatory actions taken over the past half-century... Stow's book provides a stimulating examination of the history of the enduring image of Jews as dogs in Christian thought from the New Testament to modernity."—Studies in Christian-Jewish Relations

"This book is a tour-de-force on the level of the last great work of the original Warburg group, Isaiah Shachar's study of the Judensau... It is a book that every serious student of the history of anti-Semitism and the Jewish response will use again and again."—Catholic Historical Review

"There is no question that we are in the hands of an accomplished historian who has enlarged the canvas and opened fresh questions and perspectives on this vexing subject."—Renaissance Quarterly

"This richly researched and lucidly written study makes for a fascinating read. It will remain an indispensable contribution to our understanding of Christian attitudes toward Jews in the last eight centuries."—Church History
"Jewish Dogs provokes a lot of food for thought. It points to roots of Christian hostility toward Judaism, but also points to trends in Christians revoking such behavior and beliefs... It is essential background for understanding how Sephardic Jewry and Jews in general were viewed and treated by the Catholic Church and other churches in Western Europe."—Sefarad

Asian migrants are inextricably linked to contemporary debates concerning the nation-state, neoliberalism, globalization, and transnationalism. This volume brings together these streams of inquiry and proposes a synthetic approach to examine various processes of migration and community formation on a global scale.

The essays included in Asian Diasporas look at the worldwide dispersal of Asian populations through the lens of diaspora. They illustrate the underlying structures of inequality that create diasporic communities—the cultural barriers that impede belonging to the place they inhabit and the place they call "homeland," the unequal processes that embody globalization, and the social inequalities in host and origin country alike. Five major themes connect and cut across the collection: the recognition of inter-Asian strife; the persistence of the nation state; the salience of race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality; the forces of labor, colonialism, and globalization; and the centrality of culture.

Review
"The essays reflect a high level of professional skill... the writing is clear and unpretentious, and the scholarship is solid.... These are, simply, very bright and professional scholars doing excellent scholarly work."—Paul Spickard, Journal of American Ethnic History

"Asian Diasporas skillfully integrates diverse perspectives from Asian Studies and Asian American Studies into a coherent theme to illuminate sensible understandings of how people of diverse Asian origins experience, imagine, and interpret diasporas across geographical and social spaces in the globalized world."—Min Zhou, University of California, Los Angeles

"Rhacel Parrenas and Lok Siu have created an anthology that bridges diaspora, Asian and Asian American Studies. This is a difficult task, given the range of topics and tensions possible, yet this anthology has engaged with the key debates in the field and enhanced the conversation in extremely fruitful ways. Asian Diasporas is required reading for many disciplines and fields interested in theorizing subjectivities formed out of migration and dispersions."—Inderpal Grewal, University of California, Irvine

"Illustrating seemingly porous global borders, Asian Diasporas is a timely collection of rich, well-researched chapters on the lives and experiences of people originating from Asia..."—Journal of International Migration and Integration
