Working Mothers and the Welfare State: Religion and the Politics of Work-Family Policies in Western Europe and the United States, by Kimbe

While the extent of female participation in the labor force varies across western countries, most have experienced a substantial change in women's attachment to the world of paid work. Everywhere, this trend has raised two central questions related to the children of working mothers: Should mothers of young children work outside the home at all? And if so, who bears responsibility for assuring the care and well-being of their children? Comparing the various policy choices made across France, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the United States, the book shows that there are differences in the extent to which societies accept both the idea of working mothers and the role of the state in shaping gender roles and children's lives.

Morgan employs a comparative historical approach that focuses on three time periods: the late nineteenth century, the era of rapid welfare state expansion from 1945 to 1975, and the period of seeming welfare state stagnation since the mid-1970s. The author shows how, starting in the nineteenth century, religion influenced political development in the four countries the book studies. Historic patterns of church-state relations and conflicts over religion affected ideologies about gender roles and the family, as well as the way religious forces would be incorporated into political life. These forces shaped welfare policy between 1945 and 1975, a critical time for social policy expansion. During this period, socially conservative forces in countries such as the Netherlands and the United States blocked policies that would encourage mothers to work, while the weakness of these forces enabled such policies in both Sweden and France. Morgan concludes that these policy decisions have had an enduring impact, in part because the expansion of the welfare state has been curtailed since the 1970s.

Review
"Combining masterfully historical institutionalist and feminist approaches to welfare state scholarship in comparative perspective, Morgan... provides a rich and highly prescient analysis of the politics of gender and the state over time—one which links the past, present and future in both a scholarly and applied way... [Her] book is an outstanding contribution to a burgeoning scholarship on gender, religion and politics, and the welfare state that should be on the shelf of every scholar who works on these issues and be adopted into a wide variety of curricula."—Journal of Women, Politics and Policy

"This bold and original study makes an important contribution to the literatures on gender and social policy in (and across) several disciplines. Morgan offers a richly documented account of the history and current state of policies toward wage-earning mothers, focusing primarily on child care, in four nations: France, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the United States. Sweeping and persuasive, the comparison reveals previously hidden nuances of policy and shows, surprisingly, that religion played a major role in all four cases. Working Mothers and the Welfare State belongs on every reading list."—Sonya Michel, University of Maryland

"This is a terrific book: concise, well written, and packed with useful information on cases that will be of great interest to readers. Morgan's argument about the centrality of the religious cleavage, taking a page from Stein Rokkan, will become a touchstone in discussions of the origins of policies towards women's employment and the welfare state."—Jonah D. Levy, University of California, Berkeley

"In this rich historical and comparative analysis, Morgan illuminates the ways religion—both historic cleavages as well as contemporary orientations—has entered policymaking and partisan politics with profound consequences for how we structure our collective arrangements for care, employment, welfare, and gender."—Ann Shola Orloff, Northwestern University

"From the politics of child care in France to the consolidation of the private market model in America, Working Mothers and the Welfare State astutely dissects each implementation, exposing its strengths and weaknesses as well as its implications for future generations of mothers and children. A thoroughly researched critical examination especially recommended for women's studies shelves."The Bookwatch
"The book is well written and modest in length, yet full of details."—CHOICE

A thoroughly researched critical examination
By Midwest Book Review
Written by Kimberly J. Morgan (Assistant Professor of Political Science and International Affairs, George Washington University), Working Mothers and the Welfare State: Religion and the Politics of Work-Family Policies in Western Europe and the United States is a scholarly examination of two critical questions for Western nations, in an era when women are increasingly a part of the paid workforce. The questions are: Should mothers of young children work outside the home? And if so, who bears responsibility for the care and well-being of their children? Working Mothers and the Welfare State compares and contrasts governmental policies concerning these issues in France, the United States, the Netherlands, and Sweden, especially during the latter half of the twentieth century and modern times. From the politics of child care in France to the consolidation of the private market model in America, Working Mothers and the Welfare State astutely dissects each implementation, exposing its strengths and weaknesses as well as its implications for future generations of mothers and children. A thoroughly researched critical examination especially recommended for women's studies shelves.

Degrees Without Freedom?: Education, Masculinities, and Unemployment in North India, by Craig Jeffrey, Patricia Jeffery, Roger Jeffery

Degrees Without Freedom? re-evaluates debates on education, modernity, and social change in contemporary development studies and anthropology. Education is widely imputed with the capacity to transform the prospects of the poor. But in the context of widespread unemployment in rural north India, it is better understood as a contradictory resource, providing marginalized youth with certain freedoms but also drawing them more tightly into systems of inequality. The book advances this argument through detailed case studies of educated but unemployed or underemployed young men in rural western Uttar Pradesh. This book draws on fourteen months' ethnographic research with young men from middle caste Hindu, Muslim, and ex-Untouchable backgrounds. In addition to offering a new perspective on how education affects the rural poor in South Asia, Degrees Without Freedom? includes in-depth reflection on the politics of modernity, changing rural masculinities, and caste and communal politics.

Review
"Overall, the book makes an excellent and original contribution in furthering our understanding of the heterogeneous pathways to masculinities for men from different social locations. It makes an important contribution by illustrating the significance of understanding the relationship between various forms of power in a community shaped by the intersections of caste, class, and religion and their impact on the construction of masculinities in North India in the era of globalization."—Ramaswami Mahalingam, Men and Masculinities

"Not since Paul Willis's classic Learning to Labour has a scholarly work conveyed so eloquently the promises and betrayals of formal schooling. Everyone who cares about social justice and development and how, as social scientists and practitioners, we should approach these goals, must read this superb study."—Amita Baviskar, Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi

"With verve, clarity, and apt theoretical engagement, this study describes the place of education in youthful imagination and performance, and sociopolitical change in the aftermath of economic liberalization. It's a compelling read, brimming with insight, tinged with humor, a compassionate record of how education, civility, and aspiration become entangled in the reproduction of social inequality in both familiar and new ways."—K. Sivaramakrishnan, Yale University

"The focus on masculinity, education, modernity, and social status among rural young men in northern India highlights the problems with education in India. The authors explore the mindset of those for whom rural education is a system that often fails, demonstrating a volatile mix of disenfranchisement on the one hand and underemployment on the other."—Susan S. Wadley, Syracuse University

"The book thus offers us a deep and thoughtful analysis of the socio-political transformations and reproduction of socio-economic inequality which are propelled by the promises of formal education in a terrain of uneven social and economic reality The book captures reflectively the spatial and social transformation occurring in familiar and novel ways."—Progress in Development Studies
"The book is important for both academics and policy makers: 'we question accounts of education as an unproblematic social good within development academia'. Not quite the condemnation of education as causing the problem, but a warning that education on its own will not achieve its goals, and that with some people in some contexts, it can have its 'dark side'."—Alan Rogers, University of East Anglia
"[T]hrough close ethnographic work, the authors throw new light on larger debates about development, education and employment in India, and raise important issues and questions that demand further exploration and debate by sociologists and policymakers alike."—Economic & Political Weekly
"The authors of this book do a magnicent job of analyzing the cultural and political terrain in which the potential benets of education are mediated by social and cultural capital, within highly politicized contexts and uneven economies. Degrees Without Freedom? is a model of excellent research and writing, speaking to critical debates in a number of elds, and I recommend it very highly."—Annals of the Association of American Geographers

When Diplomas Don't Lead to J-O-B's
By Jeffery Mingo
This book looks at how different groups of men in India (of different castes and religions) respond to being educated but not having a job or a job "of one's level." For all the men in the world who have fancy degrees but can barely make or save a nickel, we may relate.
What bothers me is how this book shows even globally, "it's not what you know, but who you know." I'm not well-versed in Pierre Bourdieu, but they quote his work saying even in France the rich get richer and the poor poorer through their connections, or lack thereof, alone. This book tries to examine whether education is good all by itself. (And it would seem to me that their answer is "No!")
Dr. Michele Lamont has an amazing book in which she compares rich white men from France and America. She points to surprising differences. She said the French would read magazines about philosophy, but not be impressed with winners on "Jeopardy!" She said French men boast about having extramarital affairs, an act that is stigmatized in the US (think: blue dress!). This book had that same cultural false cognate. These men said, "Poor men tuck their shirts in!" Well, here, white-collar workers would tuck their shirts in. These men are deemed "educated" for finishing high school; one would have to finish college to be deemed educated here.
I wish the authors would have read Carter G. Woodson's "The Miseducation of the Negro." The interviewees deem themselves better than others because of mannerisms, much more than knowledge. Woodson and others have said the Black elite in the US often clings to this inconsequential stuff. In Black vernacular, such snobs are deemed "bourgie" or bourgeois. I wish I could have heard what Indian men without schooling said about these men and their snobbiness. This book was top-down or one-sided in that regard.
I am disturbed how much caste and religion play roles here. I don't accuse the researchers of being inaccurate. It's just sad that those old divisions are playing out so thoroughly nowadays. All the corruption described too saddened me. We have corruption in the US, but such corruption is playing a key role in keeping underdeveloped countries poor. Wanting cushy outsourced jobs was not the goal here; these interviewees want government jobs. I have heard economists say that moving from a manufacturing-based economy to a service-based one is not bad, but I wonder if it is bad when the government is doing the cushy hiring, rather than the private sector. I can't put my finger on it, but it seems problematic.
The authors all have the same last name, but they work in different countries. I am assuming that they are related, but I never saw where they explained their kinship. The cover is appropriate in showing Indians burning their diplomas, but deceptive in that both sexes are shown on the cover when the book just discusses one of them.
The authors don't stress the conclusion that I gleaned: it seems that bettering one's self is a one-sided practice. When citizens educate themselves, perhaps the superstructure needs to do more to accommodate them. One would think that the educated could create jobs, but this book suggests how this is not happening. I wonder if India can do more to address this problem in an aggregate fashion.

The Maya World: Yucatec Culture and Society, 1550-1850, by Matthew Restall

This pathbreaking work is a social and cultural history of the Maya peoples of the province of Yucatan in colonial Mexico, spanning the period from shortly after the Spanish conquest of the region to its incorporation as part of an independent Mexico.

Instead of depending on the Spanish sources and perspectives that have formed the basis of previous scholarship on colonial Yucatan, the author aims to give a voice to the Maya themselves, basing his analysis entirely on his translations of hundreds of Yucatec Maya notarial documents—from libraries and archives in Mexico, Spain, and the United States—most of which have never before received scholarly attention.

These documents allow the author to reconstruct the social and cultural world of the Maya municipality, or cah, the self-governing community where most Mayas lived and which was the focus of Maya social and political identity. The first two parts of the book examine the ways in which Mayas were organized and differentiated from each other within the community, and the discussion covers such topics as individual and group identities, sociopolitical organization, political factionalism, career patterns, class structures, household and family patterns, inheritance, gender roles, sexuality, and religion.

The third part explores the material environment of the cah, emphasizing the role played by the use and exchange of land, while the fourth part describes in detail the nature and significance of the source documentation, its genres and its language. Throughout the book, the author pays attention to the comparative contexts of changes over time and the similarities or differences between Maya patterns and those of other colonial-era Mesoamericans, notably the Nahuas of central Mexico.

Handbook Of Inaesthetics, by Alain Badiou

Didacticism, romanticism, and classicism are the possible schemata for the knotting of art and philosophy, the third term in this knot being the education of subjects, youth in particular. What characterizes the century that has just come to a close is that, while it underwent the saturation of these three schemata, it failed to introduce a new one. Today, this predicament tends to produce a kind of unknotting of terms, a desperate dis-relation between art and philosophy, together with the pure and simple collapse of what circulated between them: the theme of education.

Whence the thesis of which this book is nothing but a series of variations: faced with such a situation of saturation and closure, we must attempt to propose a new schema, a fourth type of knot between philosophy and art.

Among these “inaesthetic” variations, the reader will encounter a sustained debate with contemporary philosophical uses of the poem, bold articulations of the specificity and prospects of theater, cinema, and dance, along with subtle and provocative readings of Fernando Pessoa, Stéphane Mallarmé, and Samuel Beckett.

a good place to start with Badiou
By Robert Hughes
His Ethics book was intriguing, but somewhat too breezy for my taste; the Manifesto seemed a little scattered and didn't successfully engage my interest. This book, Badiou's little Handbook of the Inaesthetic, is altogether more satisfying. It has a very congenial density to it and it works well in that French way, shuttling between the revelatory and the obscure. So, you have here a very readable contribution to aesthetics in a post-Lacanian, post-Heideggerian mode. Badiou does original thinking within that mode, so I think this book should have something to offer even to those who are fairly well read in this stuff.

Badiou grounds his discussions in readings of Mallarme (and others: Pessoa, Celan, Beckett), but his aim is a philosophical one, so the book is addressed to a broader audience than just Mallarme scholars. Whereas in the Ethics book his art examples came from music (Haydn, Schoenberg) and theater (Hamlet), here the examples are predominantly from poets, and occasionally from film and theater. He also writes about dance, but concludes that "art" is not quite the name for what dance is.

The book is not very much concerned to give an explicit overview of Badiou's thought, but the general outlines can be inferred and because it is so successful in its own terms, it might be a pretty good place to start with Badiou.

The Revolution of 1905: A Short History, by Abraham Ascher

This is a concise history of the Revolution of 1905, a critical juncture in the history of Russia when several possible paths were opened up for the country. By the end of that year, virtually every social group had become active in the opposition to the autocracy, which was on the verge of collapse. Only the promise of reform, in particular the formation of a parliament (Duma) that would participate in governing the country, enabled to old order to survive. For some eighteen months the opposition and the Tsarist regime continued to struggle for supremacy, and only in June 1907 did the government reassert its authority. It drastically changed the relatively liberal electoral law, depriving many citizens of the vote. Although the revolution was now over, some institutional changes remained intact. Most notably, Russia retained an elected legislature and political parties speaking for various social and economic interests. As a result, the autocratic system of rule was undermined, and the fate of the political and social order remained uncertain.

Puritan Conquistadors: Iberianizing the Atlantic, 1550-1700, by Jorge Cañizares-Esguerra

This book argues that the striking resemblances in Spanish and Puritan discourses of colonization as "exorcism" and as spiritual gardening point to a common Atlantic history. These resemblances suggest that we are better off if we simply consider the Puritan colonization of New England as a continuation of Iberian models rather than a radically different colonizing experience. The book demonstrates that a wider Pan-American perspective can upset the most cherished national narratives of the United States, for it maintains that the Puritan colonization of New England was as much a chivalric, crusading act of Reconquista (against the Devil) as was the Spanish conquest.

Review
"These chapters make for thrilling reading. Canizares-Esguerra writes with zest and an obvious love for the history of ideas. He brings to the reader's attention ideas central to European expansion in the Americas, enhancing our understanding of conquest and colonization."—Journal of Colonialism and Colonial History
"In this bold and polemical work, Jorge Cañizares-Esguerra batters and cracks the historiographical walls that barricade the Puritan north and set it apart from the Iberian south. Puritans become Conquistadors and Conquistadors become Puritans, "the West" and "the Rest" is dissolved, "the Atlantic" rises to a global warming, and the flower gardens of the nation are flooded beyond repair... luminous and pathbreaking... the book takes on [its topic] with verve, deep scholarship, and imagination. Doctors and students everywhere will be challenged and enlightened by its pages, and for a wide community of scholars Atlantic history will never be the same."—American Historical Review

"Puritan Conquistadors presents an imaginative, comparative history of ideas focused on early colonial religious themes in Spanish and British America . . . Reiterating his critique that U.S. historians have interpreted their colonial past in teleological terms, focused on the nation-state, and that Latin American(ist) historians have juxtaposed histories of failure in the southern continent with those of economic success and political power in the north, Cañizares-Esguerra challenges scholars in both fields to transcend these intellectual boundaries through paradigms that go beyond the global and the transnational in their understanding of the cultures of colonial America."—Journal of Interdisciplinary History

"This book makes important contributions to British history in a number of ways. Specifically, it demonstrates that historians have overstated the extent of England's isolation from the continent, especially in the intellectual sphere . . . Any attempt to understand England's ideology of colonization would be incomplete without taking Cañizares-Esguerra's claims into account."—British Scholar
"This is an enthusiastically argued, highly informed, and most stimulating study that aims to underline the common cultural heritage of both halves of the American continent in colonial times . . . In sum, he has produced a brilliant book."—Hispanic American Historical Review

"Puritan Conquistadors is an important book that deserves to be read by a broad audience. Specialists will appreciate the breadth of research, and students will gain much from the clarity of its argument and elegance of its prose... In a gentle but insistent way, [Cañizares-Esguerra] again reminds us that there are important and deep-seated cultural connections among all European colonising powers that survive and transcend the agendas of centralising monarchies and their imperial agents."—Itinerario

"Rebuking scholars who segregate the histories of Latin and Anglo- American colonization, Puritan Conquistadors argues provocatively that Spanish Catholics and British Protestants inhabited a common religious world that informed all European discourses about colonization . . . Canizares-Esguerra has written a passionately intelligent book whose assertion that Iberian colonization of the New World is as "'ormative' as the English one should resonate with all American historians."—Journal of American History
"Caizares-Esguerra offers a compelling and balanced interpretation on a salient yet hitherto unarticulated theme in the early-modern Atlantic world: the demonological constructs through which the Europeans perceived the New World (its flora, fauna, and inhabitants), their mission there, and even each other."—CHOICE
"Once in a long while, a book comes along that sets history in its proper perspective. Jorge Canizares-Esguerra has taken a step forward... not only demonstrating a wider Pan-American perspective, but taking a larger step in the globalization of historic ties."—Colonial Latin American Historical Review
In this remarkable work in Atlantic history, Jorge Caizares-Esguerra demonstrates with lavish scholarship and visual imagery the European settlers struggle with Satanic forces that permeated the colonization and settlement of Europeans, both Hispanic and British, in the Western Hemisphere. He explores the epical narratives written in Spanish, Latin, and English, of that deeply embedded struggle, and shows how Christians in America thereafter fought to preserve a spiritual "garden" free of demonic forces. The struggle he describes in this original and challenging book, experienced by Christians of the time as heroic and inescapable, was an essential part of Atlantic history in the years of its early development.—Bernard Bailyn, Harvard University
"Recent scholarship on early modern Europe has shown how, contrary to the sharp contrasts of historical folklore, the Protestant and Catholic Reformations dreamed comparable dreams, and promoted comparable forms of political, economic, and social development. Now Professor Caizares-Esguerra completes the picture for the Americas of roughly the same era; in a book notable for skillful deployment of a rich visual material, he shows how Spanish and Puritan clerics, at opposite ends of a mutual anathema, dreamed comparable dreams, and shared common fears of an advancing kingdom of the devil."—James Tracy, University of Minnesota
"Puritan Conquistadors is a powerful and timely reminder that the two main traditions of early European expansion in the Americas Iberian Catholic and Anglo-Saxon Protestant were not, as we invariably assume, marked only by irreconcilable difference. In a study that is both pan-Atlantic and pan-American, Jorge Caizares-Esguerra boldly dismantles the confessional and national stereotypes of existing historiography by exploring what was common in the mentalities and discourses of Iberian and Puritan colonizers alike. Biblical narratives and typologies, millenarian and apocalyptic expectations, and the heroic idioms of epic struggle, crusading, and the transformation of the wilderness are restored to their original prominence. Above all, this is the most comprehensive and exciting version yet of the satanization thesis of early colonization as applied demonology. Professor Caizares-Esguerra shows brilliantly and conclusively that, whether in Massachusetts or in Mexico and Peru, clerical conquistadors saw themselves first and foremost as exorcists, expelling demons from the inhabitants and the landscape of the New World."—Stuart Clark, Swansea University
"Jorge Canizares-Esguerra is a historian on a mission: to rectify a historiography that posits Spain's conquest of present-day Latin America as very different and much worse than England's settlement of the present-day United States . . . In sum, this

Face to Face: Toward a Sociological Theory of Interpersonal Behavior, by Jonathan Turner

What are the processes and mechanisms involved in interpersonal behavior, and how are these constrained by human biology, social structure, and culture? Drawing on and updating classic sociological theory, and with special reference to the most recent research in evolutionary and neurophysiological theory, this ambitious work aims to present no less than a unified, general theory of what happens when people interact.

Despite modern technologies that mediate communication among individuals, face-to-face interaction is still primal and primary. This book argues against recent social theory that postulates a dramatic change in the nature of human relationships under postmodernity and, instead, asserts that despite undeniable and accelerating change in people’s environments, certain basic human tendencies toward emotionally inflected, physically present social interaction remain strong.

Turner builds on first principles he locates in the work of Mead, Freud, Schutz, Durkheim, and Goffman. After brief overviews of previous work on the embeddedness of social interaction in sociocultural systems and in human biology, each chapter presents elements of the microdynamics involved in encounters: emotions, motivations (transactional needs), culture (normative conventions), role processes, status, demographics, and ecology. Each chapter ends with a series of testable propositions, which are then streamlined into a series of summary principles intended to motivate future research. The book concludes with some cautious hypotheses on the potential influence of microprocesses on broader social dynamics.

Review
"The heart of this book is an admirable summary of work done on interpersonal relations over the last century in sociology. There is not a better work available to encapsulate the positions of theorists like Mead, Schutz, Freud, Durkheim, and Goffman, or to frame the basic issues in the field, such as emotional, role, status, and ecological forces in face to face interaction."—Canadian Journal of Sociology Online

"...Turner has succeeded admirably in pulling together diverse strains of sociological reasoning into a coherent and integrated theoretical framework."—Canadian Review of Sociology and Anthropology

Microsociology at its best
By Joshua Hurtado
I gave it four stars because it was a thorough analysis on the microsociological processes at hand in interpersonal interaction. The explanations are clear and concise, and Jonathan Turner's attempts to theorize elements of interpersonal behavior and divide them into defined categories yield excellent results.

Another good aspect of this book is that it comes up with charts that help the reader learn and memorize the processes or elements that influence microsociological processes. The charts related to primary emotions and their combinations are my favorites.

There is, however, an aspect I think could be improved. It is, at times, a dry read. I found it tiring to read at times, and as a result I spent 10 days reading it, instead of the three or four days it usually takes me to read something of the kind. I think it could be improved with case studies or more concrete examples in charts highlighting the microsocial processes (the in-text examples should stay there, though, because they help the reader understand what Turner is saying). Discussion questions or questions that summarize and help the reader think critically on the subject could also add value to it. I understand though that this text is more academic than interested in teaching, so its shortcomings are understandable.

Jon's woven theoretical carpet of social face to face interaction is a fascininating one and like a persian carpet rolls over in spreading just to show the amazing diversity in human face to face interaction with variable depth and meaning in explusion despite all being confined and wrapped within the specific boundaries of a fully flattened out carpt. In other words, Jon successfully identifies the structure and meta order hidden in an apparenetly lawlesss and chaotic face to face interaction. Te ost exciting part of Jon's theory is that he shows how in fact new and innovative forms of social face to face interaction can be created by crossing the mini boundaries --in spill over-- of the communion of human itteraction without ever disrupting the general and lawful framework of order that encompasses them all in the utter edges of its totality. From this wonderful analysis Jon comes to develop a series of law like principles and boundaries governing human interactions yet he shows that they are flexible enough to be over written and crossed over without violating the general forces of social governance that themselves from outer edge of social totalty defines and shapes these human interactions that on the surface their boundaries aconstantly can be violated for innovation and freshness.
From his analysis oen can learn this principle among others: that the boudaries of social order at the micro level are more permeable for the development of genuine social revolution with border crossing than the macro level of social order and that to overthrow by crossing the macro boudaires for sical innovation is like to cut the persian carpet into pieces for the sake of an over arching social change from sky withut ever knowing how living beings survive on the planet down the earth on a daily basis.

This book is a welcome departure from the typical macro structuralism that has pervaded much of Jonathan's work and analysis in the past. The author takes the microscopic elements of social interaction of face to face encounter and weave a wonderful tapestry of a dialgue as if two separate civilization in their first round of encontour are about to make MOzart's magic flute in collaboration as a prelude to become aware of one another's inner thought process. This theoretical departure allows the author to appreciate the flexible and impregnable boundaries of face to face interaction in order to understand how an enduring social change is possible without its typical spill over mess beyond and above its structural framework. Jonathan in his masterful craft of micro-anaysis shows how to pull off the table cloth with all the object intact remaining on the table and then in the second round to put the table cloth back where it was in the first place as if nothing as ever happened before until party feast has begun. With such permeable boundaries only present at the micro level of social interaction, one literally begins to understand how on earth it is possible to light up the whole city in glow with the light of only one candle.

Servants of Globalization: Women, Migration, and Domestic Work, First Edition, by Rhacel Salazar Parrenas

Servants of Globalization is a poignant and often troubling study of migrant Filipina domestic workers who leave their own families behind to do the mothering and caretaking work of the global economy in countries throughout the world. It specifically focuses on the emergence of parallel lives among such workers in the cities of Rome and Los Angeles, two main destinations for Filipina migration.

The book is largely based on interviews with domestic workers, but the book also powerfully portrays the larger economic picture as domestic workers from developing countries increasingly come to perform the menial labor of the global economy. This is often done at great cost to the relations with their own split-apart families. The experiences of migrant Filipina domestic workers are also shown to entail a feeling of exclusion from their host society, a downward mobility from their professional jobs in the Philippines, and an encounter with both solidarity and competition from other migrant workers in their communities.

The author applies a new theoretical lens to the study of migration—the level of the subject, moving away from the two dominant theoretical models in migration literature, the macro and the intermediate. At the same time, she analyzes the three spatial terrains of the various institutions that migrant Filipina domestic workers inhabit—the local, the transnational, and the global. She draws upon the literature of international migration, sociology of the family, women's work, and cultural studies to illustrate the reconfiguration of the family community and social identity in migration and globalization. The book shows how globalization not only propels the migration of Filipina domestic workers but also results in the formation of parallel realities among them in cities with greatly different contexts of reception.

Review
"[Parrenas's] nuanced accounts and fresh analysis challenge the reader to think deeply, not just about the suffering of immigrant domestic workers and their families, but about the entire global system that creates such labor, and how that arrangement damages all women—even first-worlders. . . . Remarkable."—The Women's Review of Books

"Offers rich and timely analysis to reveal the lives of migrant domestic workers in the shadow of globalization. . . . Brilliant feminist sociological scholarship with theoretical sophistication, emotional sensitivity, and political committment."—Work and Occupations

"This is a thorough analysis of the lives of migrant domestic workers. . . .In all, this book brings to light many thought-provoking stories of anguish, resignation, and resistance. . . . This book is a welcome addition to the body of literature addressing women domestic migrants. Parrenas's work advances our understanding of transnational domestic workers. . . . In addition to being a fascinating inside look at . . . two communities, Parrenas's study serves as an intrusive model for other scholars interested in undertaking this type of research."—Gender & Society

"Parrenas' well-documented and theoretically focused research reads easily as it reveals the complex nature of global migration. Her timely study of the Filipina domestic community brings overdue attention to one of the largest migrant communities in the world. . . . [Servants of Globalization] can be used for introductory courses in labor studies, women's studies, or ethnicity in the United States."—Feminist Collections

"Servants of Globalization is a wonderful but troubling book that is bound to impact future studies on migration, domestic work, and the family. . . . Overall, I strongly recommend this book. It is one of the few works that has dared to explore the dilemmas of the transnational family including the children."—Contemporary Sociology
"Servants of Globalization is an ambitious, important, and broad-reaching study of the way in which the lives of Filipina domestic workers in Italy and the United States are affected by and interwoven with broader patterns of global capitalism and transnationalism. . . . A provocative, insightful, and moving study of gendered labor migration and globalization. For those with an interest in Asian American studies, this book provides less of a case study of Filipinos in Los Angeles than a wider challenge and an innovative theoretical framework for understanding immigrant communities within the context of transnationalism and global capitalism."–Journal of Asian American Studies
"Servants of Globalization is a welcome addition to the growing literature on gender and globalization. . . . This wide-ranging book yields substantial insights throughout and should be read by scholars, activists, and students interested in Asian American studies, women's studies, sociology, anthropology, and international development."—American Journal of Sociology
"Although many authors have written on the Filipina diaspora, few have provided such a detailed examination of this phenomenon and linked it so skilfully to some of the key debates about the international division of labour and global inequalities."—Katie Willis, University of Liverpool

Great book from a great scholar...
By Dr. B
Parreñas, a scholar admired by many whose academic training, coupled with her linguistic skills, draws inquiring minds into the largely untapped world of Filipino international migration. The book critically situates the migration from a historical-structural perspective and yet focuses on the family as the unit of analysis which must negotiate between the state regulations of both sending and receiving countries, the financial realities of citizens from poor countries of the world, and the emotional hardships faced by family members. The study, in general, is an extremely important one because it taps into what is a "female" international labor migration, bound by related expectations of gender roles, thereby encouraging readers to rethink our gendered perspective of all labor migrations. In addition, the book offers an effective assessment of the critical role of the family to young children (the focus of her subsequent book), the challenges faced by poor populations of the world, and how the global economy is structured to benefit wealthy nations of the world. I highly recommend the book and have only a small criticism: though she has carefully helped us to see the gendered inequalities faced by female international migrants, at times in the book Parreñas herself seems quite unnecessarily judgemental of the very women whose predicaments she details.

very moving story and a great study
By yidmama
Do not be turned off by this book because it is written by an academic. It is one of the most moving books I have read in a long time. In toronto, where Philipino nannies work for many families, the book's topics are acute and relevant. The book tells a story of extremely educated women, elite in their society, who take up domestic work in the West in order to provide their children and parents with better opportunities. The book will make you re-think many things that families in the West take for granted, such as being able to sleep under the same roof with their children, and being able to provide for them at the same time.
