A creative endeavor....
By Susan in Sacramento
The detailed analysis of both well-known and lesser- known individuals' creative thought processes is interesting and thought provoking. Examples are drawn from diverse fields from biology to art to literature and social science. Select individuals are followed throughout the book with emphasis on different facets of creativity and how their discoveries relate to each. I particularly enjoyed the live interviews with current researchers; their explanations of how they had become interested in their chosen fields and what factors lead to their contributions. My favorite was Susan Ferguson, a literary scholar, who combined an interest in literature with linguistics and anthropology. Her thought processes, discoveries, and creativity are traced through various chapters in the text. The exhaustive scope and depth of the research into the underlying motivations of those studied is impressive and when combined with the author's own theories of creativity generate a note worthy work.

Busyness defines the lives of most Americans. For some, the focus of busyness is family. For others, it is career or social activities. Sometimes busyness results from a big event, like the catastrophic illness of a family member, but much of it builds from many seemingly inconsequential demands that collectively become overwhelming. We search for the best airline prices on the Internet, are "partners" with teachers in our children's education, and employ a battery of devices that promise to save labor if only we can learn how to use them.

Busier Than Ever! follows the daily activities of fourteen American families. It explores why they are busy and what the consequences are for their lives. Busyness is not just a matter of personal time management, but of the activities we participate in and how each of us creates "the good life." While numerous books deal with efficiency and the difficulties of balancing work and family, Busier Than Ever! offers a fresh approach. Busyness is not a "problem" to be solved—it is who we are as Americans and it's redefining American families.

Review
"Busier Than Ever! is a highly readable book full of accessible anecdotes of families adjusting in a modern world... The reality of outsourcing or downsizing is handled by the authors in a sensitive, thoughtful way... [This book] is certainly a welcome addition to the sociology of work and family.—Canadian Journal of Sociology

"...intriguing, insightful, and suggestive...raises important questions about people's social lives."—CHOICE

"Overscheduled families with mission statements. Parents on the run. Kids too busy for childhood. Work invades family life, and vice versa. Blurred boundaries and compartmentalized behavior. How do families create and manage the myriad obligations of middle-class life in 21st century America? Based on extended and detailed ethnographic fieldwork, with intriguing and appealing case studies, the authors offer an unique analysis of contemporary life. No one seeking to understand the American middle class today can afford to miss this highly readable and revealing book."—Conrad Kottak, University of Michigan

"We all know—and experience—that Americans are busier than ever, but what does that busyness actually entail, day to day, family to family? A fascinating examination of everyday life, this book offers a detailed picture of what constitutes busyness in American families as they cope with a risk society and manage the consequences of option overload. While showing that each family is unique, the authors also uncover patterns that help us understand family life in America today."—Deborah Tannen, author of You're Wearing THAT? Understanding Mothers and Daughters in Conversation

"The authors have discovered a remarkable paradox. In their devotion to family, parents often express a desire for efficiency, control, productivity – a 'new instrumentalism' many of us associate with work. This is a timely look in the mirror of dual-income middle class America."—Arlie Hochschild, author of The Time Bind: When Work Becomes Home and Home Becomes Work
"This book is a fascinating read packed with detailed information about each of the study families' various experiences with and attempts to cope with busyness...Their [the authors] conclusions are insightful and provocative, and should spark lively discussion." —Journal of Sociology and Social Welfare

Interesting Stories But Not Enough Analysis
By CrimsonGirl
"Busier Than Ever!" profiles 14 dual-income middle class families living in the San Francisco Bay Area to look at just why modern life seems so hectic. While I found the families' stories interesting, the authors seemed content just to describe what is going on in their subjects' lives without taking the next step to analyze what it says about our society. I kept waiting for the authors to make some sort of policy suggestions as to how businesses, schools, the government, and other institutions could help relieve the pressures on families- but they never did.

Enhancing Government: Federalism for the 21st Century, by Erwin Chemerinsky

Federalism—the division of power between national and state governments—has been a divisive issue throughout American history. Conservatives argued in support of federalism and states' rights to oppose the end of slavery, the New Deal, and desegregation. In the 1990s, the Rehnquist Court used federalism to strike down numerous laws of public good, including federal statutes requiring the clean up of nuclear waste and background checks for gun ownership. Now the Roberts Court appears poised to use federalism and states' rights to limit federal power even further.

In this book, Erwin Chemerinsky passionately argues for a different vision: federalism as empowerment. He analyzes and criticizes the Supreme Court's recent conservative trend, and lays out his own challenge to the Court to approach their decisions with the aim of advancing liberty and enhancing effective governance. While the traditional approach has been about limiting federal power, an alternative conception would empower every level of government to deal with social problems. In Chemerinsky's view, federal power should address national problems like environmental protection and violations of civil rights, while state power can be strengthened in areas such as consumer privacy and employee protection.

The challenge for the 21st century is to reinvent American government so that it can effectively deal with enduring social ills and growing threats to personal freedom and civil liberties. Increasing the chains on government—as the Court and Congress are now doing in the name of federalism—is exactly the wrong way to enter the new century. But, an empowered federalism, as Chemerinsky shows, will profoundly alter the capabilities and promise of U.S. government and society.

Review
"...Chemerinsky is a brilliant constitutional law scholar whose perspective on federalism, preemption, and separation of powers should be studied carefully. ...Enhancing Government is worth reading for those interested not only in the state of legal relations between state and federal governments, but also in how those relations might evolve in the next few years."—The Federal Lawyer

"The framers gave us federalism at the end of the eighteenth century. Enhancing Government is federalism's blueprint for the twenty-first century. Chemerinsky delivers a deathblow to the modern view that federalism serves to limit government action—and shows instead how federalism allows government to solve problems and to enhance individual liberties. Powerfully argued, erudite, and practical, this magnificent book is essential reading for every citizen." —Jason Mazzone, Brooklyn Law School

"Erwin Chemerinsky is one of the nation's leading scholars of constitutional law. Enhancing Government makes an important contribution to an area that has aroused great interest among academics, judges, politicians, and the general public. Chemerinsky's innovative approach sheds new light on one of the oldest and most significant areas of constitutional inquiry." —Robert A. Schapiro, Emory University

"In Enhancing Government, Erwin Chemerinsky provides a kind of holograph of what federalism—as the federal-state relation is confusingly called—would resemble if the U.S. were to enter a period of liberal ascendancy. His timing could not be better, since the chance of such an ascendancy is not exactly remote: A Barack Obama presidency seems possible, together with a Democratic majority in both houses of Congress The great virtue of Mr. Chemerinsky's book is that it serves as a blueprint for the Obama administration and a fair warning to its opponents." —The Wall Street Journal

"Chemerinsky has taken on the formidable task of arguing for a new constitutional vision of federalism, which should be viewed not as a limit on federal power but as an empowerment at both the state and national level...This is an interesting read for constitutional lawyers." —CHOICE

The Nutty Professor
By Marvelous Mal
"Enhancing Government!?" Frightening! Sounds like a low-budget, late-night infomercial for inadequate men. Chemerinsky (Chimera-in-Sky) is no Alan Dershowitz. Rather, he is a prime example of the phenomenon of an intelligent man who chooses to be out of touch with reality. Chimera-in-Sky seems to despise the Constitution. For Chimera-in-Sky, the Constitution is simply an old document to be overcome by activism and emotional arguments for social justice and "change." If Chimera-in-Sky and his ilk had an ounce of decency, integrity and intellectual honesty, they would seek to amend the Constitution in order to carry out their social objectives, as the document itself prescribes. Instead, in light of social "emergencies, such as racism, poverty, inequality, etc., they seek to "empower" the courts and government by using expedient methods and openly lying about what the Constitution states and means, and what the limits of each branch of government are. No signer to the Constitution could have imagined the monstrous, all-powerful, totalitarian government allowed by our courts. Rather than proceed through the legislature, as required, totalitarian ideologues like Chimera-in-Sky seek to continually corrupt the entire judicial system just to prevail on a few social issues. Thanks to fake professors, lawyers and judges like Chimera-in-Sky, the real Constitution has been gutted. The 9th and 10th Amendments, that would have protected the People from wild, cancer-like government and ongoing abuses of power, have been ignored. If you must buy Chimera-in-Sky's nonsense book, you can get it used on Amazon for around six bucks. Or you can buy Mein Kampf or Stalin's Dialectical and Historical Materialism and to learn about similar totalitarian methods. I truly pity students who must endure Chimera-in-Sky's nonsense.

reducing the role of the legislature
By D. coleman
The author advocates the court system's writing law instead of being the arbiter. The author appears to believe that courts can make all decisions by broadly referencing the Constitution. In the extreme, the authority of elected legislatures would be dramatically diminished. I found his point of view frightening in his willingness to so dramatically tamper with the balance of powers of our system

No Law: Intellectual Property in the Image of an Absolute First Amendment, by David Lange, H. Jefferson Powell

The original text of the Constitution grants Congress the power to create a regime of intellectual property protection. The first amendment, however, prohibits Congress from enacting any law that abridges the freedoms of speech and of the press. While many have long noted the tension between these provisions, recent legal and cultural developments have transformed mere tension into conflict. No Law offers a new way to approach these debates.

In eloquent and passionate style, Lange and Powell argue that the First Amendment imposes absolute limits upon claims of exclusivity in intellectual property and expression, and strips Congress of the power to restrict personal thought and free expression in the name of intellectual property rights. Though the First Amendment does not repeal the Constitutional intellectual property clause in its entirety, copyright, patent, and trademark law cannot constitutionally license the private commodification of the public domain.

The authors claim that while the exclusive rights currently reflected in intellectual property are not in truth needed to encourage intellectual productivity, they develop a compelling solution for how Congress, even within the limits imposed by an absolute First Amendment, can still regulate incentives for intellectual creations. Those interested in the impact copyright doctrines have on freedom of expression in the U.S. and the theoretical and practical aspects of intellectual property law will want to take a closer look at this bracing, resonant work.

Review
"Overall, I strongly recommend the book. It was a complex and intellectually stimulating read. It clearly describes the field of intellectual property today...The book should be required reading for anyone interested in the area of copyright law and would find a home in any course focused on constitutional law, intellectual property or public policy."—The Law and Politics Book Review

"No Law has everything that makes a book valuable. It is clearly written, makes an original argument based on exhaustive research and challenges conventional thinking. Moreover, it offers a possible solution to a pressing social question."—International Journal of Communication

"I was provoked and engaged by this book! There is much to learn here about intellectual property and the First Amendment, both separately and together. No Law is a very elegantly written, well-organized, and readable work of legal fantasy, and I mean this in a good sense."—Paul J. Heald, University of Georgia

"This will be one of the most important books about intellectual property published this decade. The scholarship is more than excellent, the research is careful and well-documented, and the writing is nimble and illuminating." —-Keith Aoki, University of California, Davis

"Inspired at times by Justice Hugo Black, at times by Jerry Garcia, Lange andPowell deliver an irreverent polemic, arguing for a world in which a more robust understanding of the First Amendment and its commitment to genuinelyfree expression require a fundamental restructuring of our overly inflated systems of copyright and similar exclusive speech-licensing regimes."—Yochai Benkler, author of The Wealth of Networks: How Social Production Transforms Markets and Freedom

Gestures of Ethical Life: Reading Hölderlin's Question of Measure After Heidegger (Meridian: Crossing Aesthetics), by David Kleinberg

For Greek antiquity, the question of right or fitting measure constituted the very heart of both ethics and politics. But can the Good of the ethical life and the Justice of the political be reduced to measurement and calculation? If they are matters of measure, are they not also absolutely immeasurable? In critical dialogue with texts by Plato, Hölderlin, Rilke, Heidegger, Benjamin, Adorno, Marx, Merleau-Ponty, Levinas, and Levi, the author argues that the question of measure has become ever more urgent in the context of a modernity pressured by the conditions of a technological economy and a relativism that threatens to destroy a vital sense of moral responsibility and the commitment to justice that underlies the possibility of freedom. Conceived as a task for the “metaphysics” of memory, this book explores the normative problematic of measure, bringing its deeply buried redemptive promise to appearance in our gestures, uses and abuses of the hands, the dialectic of tact, and the manners of social existence.

Review
"David Kleinberg-Levin is nothing if not a thinker who has always tried to save philosophy from itself. Gestures of Ethical Life is a book of careful close readings, lucid articulations of concepts, and critical counterstatements. In the bargain it is beautifully written—a rare achievement even in the best of times, whenever they might have been."—Gerald L. Bruns, Continental Philosophy Review

"This is a book for our troubled times. It speaks to the most pressing current dilemmas . . . [Kleinberg-Levin], in an utterly engaging way, takes us on a fascinating voyage that includes the testimony of British laborers, the thinking of venture capitalists, the life of the bourgeosie, and ancient as well as contemporary theorists. The book ranges across virtually the entirety of dilemmas into which contemporary existence has plunged us—always with insight, inspiration, wit, and a sense of hope. This is an extraordinary work, original in its vision and deep in its resources. It is a premier work in continental philosophy, at the cutting edge of this ever-expanding field of work. It is, in short, a genuine tour de force."—Edward S. Casey, SUNY at Stony Brook

An in-depth consideration of the normative problematic of measure
By Midwest Book Review
Gestures Of Ethical Life: Reading Holderlin's Question Of Measure After Heidegger is a scholarly, serious-minded philosophical dialogue with texts by historical thinkers including Plato, Holderlin, Heidegger, Marx, Levinas, and more about the question of evaluating right and wrong, good and bad, ethics and justice. Professor of Philosophy David Kleinberg-Levin argues persuasively that the question of the appropriate measure and calculation for ethics and justice, and even the question of whether an appropriate measure and calculation for ethics and justice is possible, has become increasingly urgent in the modern world pressured by globalization and steadily advancing technology. An in-depth consideration of the normative problematic of measure, and its potential for use, misuse, manipulation, and social cohesiveness in a diverse world.

For as long as there has been war, there have been those who have opposed such bloodshed. Here Robert Rotberg details the flowering of the great American peace movement in the late nineteenth century and the remarkable life of its foremost proponent, Edwin Ginn. Born into poverty, Ginn rose to become one of the wealthiest men of his day. While in his mid-fifties, after his second marriage to a much younger woman, he began to direct his time and money to various social causes, primarily the nascent American peace movement. This is the story of Ginn's personal attempt to change world attitudes regarding the dangers of arming for war by appealing to logic, reason, and common sense. In conjunction with the World Peace Foundation, which he founded in 1910, Ginn's vigorous peace campaigning and organizational activities shed substantial light on important foreign and domestic issues in the decades leading up to the First World War. Featuring a colorful cast of characters, including Andrew Carnegie, Henry Ford, and David Starr Jordan, the first president of Stanford University, A Leadership for Peace explores fundamental questions of war and peace that are still relevant today.

Review
"Rotberg's biographical study of Edwin Ginn is a fresh addition to peace studies and a timely reflection on how civic leaders struggled to come up with innovative visions to make peace in the world when Western nations were becoming increasingly bellicose during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries."—Journal of American History

"This book presents little-known and new material regarding a 'leading' figure in the late 19th and early 20th century American peace movement—the Boston educational book publisher and originator of the World Peace Foundation, Edwin Ginn. It does something more, which is to exhibit nearly all of the strategic and intellectual dilemmas that are faced by the internationalist counterparts of Edwin Ginn and the World Peace Foundation today."—Alan K. Henrikson, The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University

From the Inside Flap

The Wild God of the World: An Anthology of Robinson Jeffers, by Robinson Jeffers

Robinson Jeffers (1887-1962) is not only the greatest poet that the American West has produced but also a major poet of the twentieth century in the tradition of American prophetic poetry. This anthology serves as an introduction to Jeffers's work for the general reader and for students in courses on American poetry.

Jeffers composed each volume of his verse around one or two long narrative or dramatic poems. The Wild God of the World follows this practice: in it, Cawdor, one of Jeffers's most powerful narratives, is surrounded by a representative selection of shorter poems.

At the end of the book, the editor has provided revealing statements about Jeffers's poetry and poetics, and about his philosophy of nature and human nature.

Review
"For too many decades Jeffers has been the forgotten giant of American poetry. The Wild God of the World gathers his best and most central work. For those who would discover Jeffers, the intense beauty of his poems of the California coast; the reach of his meditations on history, science, and God; and the lyricism of his personal poems, this is the place to start—and a place to return again and again." —Tim Hunt, Washington State University

"Of all the poets of his generation, [Robinson Jeffers] made our relation to this earth and sea and sky and wheeling seasons and the evolutionary processes that made trees and salmon runs and hunting hawks, his subject. As that relation grows more troubled, his words become more necessary. To have this beautifully edited and freshly seen anthology is a gift."
—Robert Hass,University of California, Berkeley

Appropriate Title: Excellent Collection
By Flounder
This brief collection of poetry by the former Carmel, CA resident Robinson Jeffers contains some of his strongest lyrical work. Although suited for an introductory course on poetry, I'm not sure why the publishers (Stanford UP) would think that this volume ... is a better deal than the other recent Stanford UP volume, The Collected Poetry, which includes some of Jeffers's prose (Prefaces/Letters) and is more comprehensive ...
This is a slim volume--about the size of Hass's previous collection (Rock and Hawk, now out-of-print). But it is vastly superior in text and style to The Selected Poems (thin book, red and blue cover, ...).
I highly recommend this text. It contains the "Best Of" Jeffers's poetic gems, such as "Shine, Perishing Republic," (apropos for our current times), and "For Una," to name a couple.
Jeffers was an amazing American poet. For once I disagree with Vendler's estimation of his poetic merits and craft. I would recommend Jeffers to a reader in the same spirit that Hass, C. Milosz, Wm. Everson, and Bukowski recommended that we listen to his prophetic voice. Jeffers's work embodies the Carmel landscape and cosmic essence of Northern California. Yet his voice is universal and resounds with tragic wisdom.
I also recommend Hass, Milosz, Everson, H. Miller, and the academic treatments of Jeffers's work by Robert Brophy.

Bleak, cold and beautiful
By Amazon Customer
Jeffers somehow captures the spirit of the California coast at night. Its actually somewhat disturbingly cosmic, not in the hippy sense, but in the Greek sense: immense, infinite and terrifying. No wonder Jeffers' appeal is limited. I love him.

High Reliability Management: Operating on the Edge (High Reliability and Crisis Management), by Emery Roe, Paul Schulman

"Reliability" has become a watchword in the business community. Increasingly, it refers to anticipation and resilience organizations' ability to plan for, absorb, and rebound from shocks. Across many sectors and cases, the approach to improving reliability in primary technical systems has been remarkably similar. Stakeholders assume that improved reliability lies in better design and technology.

This book speaks to the severe limits of formal design and technology relative to operational skills, experience, and knowledge. The debate over the vulnerability of critical infrastructures has far too often neglected the managerial dimension of public security and business continuity. High Reliability Management is the first book about the people who manage for high reliability, namely, those professionals who provide critical services continuously and safely, even during peak demand times or periods of stress.

The text draws on one of the most intensive studies of a critical infrastructure within a high reliability framework. This longitudinal analysis examines the California electrical gridone of the largest, most complex, and economically important in the world. From this research comes a new perspective on strategic balances in society, and practical advice to researchers and professionals who confront reliability daily.

Review
"Schulman and Roe understand how large-scale organizations successfully deal with modern threats. In High Reliability Management, these recognized experts and creative thinkers dissect the strategies and practices of CAISO—an organization operating in one of the most complex and quickly evolving environments imaginable. Their accessible writing brings the reader into the control rooms and explains how operators perform reliably under immense pressure. This book pushes the boundaries of High Reliability Theory and takes its position as an instant classic in the field." —Arjen Boin, Leiden University

"Paul Schulman and Emery Roe take us behind the scenes of high reliability managing in a complex network and find that the previously unarticulated role of 'reliability professionals' can make or break high reliability organizations. This well-grounded discovery is of utmost importance since it increases the paths by which higher reliability can be produced. Every manager who tries valiantly to 'keep up' with dynamic input, and every academic who puzzles over the mystery of how 'keeping up' is accomplished, will love this book! This is a story of volatility and options to handle it, a story that could not be more timely." —Karl E. Weick, Co-author of Managing the Unexpected, Second Edition

"Based on remarkable, sustained access to the institution that manages one of the county's most significant operating networks and critical infrastructures, Roe and Schulman contribute important, new insights into the dynamics and dilemmas of reliable organizational performance. The study calls out the crucial nature of reliability professionals in assuring steady performance under widely varying and often surprising conditions. It is an alert to decision makers and a cautionary tale for planners and regulators, as the US continues to struggle with the challenges of infrastructures at risk. One of a kind, this book is a must read for those who seek to design, manage, and understand large technical systems that confront markets everywhere."—Todd R. La Porte, Professor of Political Science, University of California, Berkeley

"The book is a valuable case study, the most intensive to date, of a large electricity grid and has a conceptualization of operational phrases that can be used on other systems."—Charles Perrow, Yale University

About the Author

How the lights stay on
By Moshe Farjoun
Roe's and Schulman's book does two things. It provides an inside look at how the California electricity system managed to provide a highly reliable service despite the many challenges it faced. It also uses this site to draw general implications for high reliability in other critical infrastructure systems, such as security, finance and communications. Extremely well written and engaging the book takes us right into the control room to show us how through the use of particular practices and skills operators and other professionals juggle extreme and volatile demands and in doing so make sure that millions of individuals and organizations will continue functioning without disruption. Roe and Schulman go beyond explaining this miracle to develop provocative ideas about high reliability management that challenge current thinking and have many important insights for practitioners. This is a highly rewarding reading.

High Tension in the Electrical Grid Control Room
By White Wolf
This book presents a multi-year case study of the California Independent System Operator (CAISO), the government entity created to operate California's electricity grid when the state deregulated its electricity market. CAISO's travails read like The Perils of Pauline and the authors do an outstanding job of describing the different grid management strategies CAISO used under various operating conditions. It is a comprehensive description of contingency management in the real world, emphasizing CAISO's adaptability to new and changing environmental demands, requirements and constraints.

The primary analytic device is the authors' High Reliability Management model, a 2x2 matrix where the axes are System Volatility and Network Options Variety. System Volatility refers to the magnitude and rate of change of CAISO's environmental variables; Network Options Variety refers to the range of resources and strategies available for meeting demand (basically in real time) given the current inputs. Each variable can be High or Low so there are four possible modes and a distinctive operating management approach for each. All modes must accomplish CAISO's two missions of matching electricity supply and demand, and protecting the grid. The key dynamic for the CAISO organization is the need to recognize mode shifts and switch management strategies accordingly as the manifestation of “normal” operations.

High Reliability Management describes something rare, a socio-technical-political start-up entity. It's well-written and full of insightful observations.
