Thought-Images: Frankfurt School Writers’ Reflections from Damaged Life (Cultural Memory in the Present), by Gerhard Richter

In this book, Gerhard Richter explores the aesthetic and political ramifications of the literary genre of the Denkbild, or thought-image, as it was employed by four major German-Jewish writers and philosophers of the first half of the twentieth century: Theodor W. Adorno, Walter Benjamin, Ernst Bloch, and Siegfried Kracauer. The Denkbild is a poetic mode of writing, a brief snapshot-in-prose that stages the interrelation of literary, philosophical, political, and cultural insights. Richter's careful analysis of the linguistic characteristics of this mode of writing sheds new light on pivotal concerns of modernity, including the fractured cityscape, philosophical problems of modern music, the experience of exiled homelessness, and the disaster of Auschwitz. Thought-Images not only reorients our understanding of the Frankfurt School of Critical Theory in important ways but also establishes significant links between these writers and contemporary French thinkers such as Jacques Derrida.

Review
"Richter's truly fresh look at the Frankfurt School writers through the genre of the philosophical miniature of the Denkbild is a stroke of genius. Richter demonstrates how the Denkbild was both a manifestation of a particular shared conception of aesthetics and a genre with which to expand this conception. The book's major accomplishment is to establish a significant connection between the work of the Frankfurt School and contemporary French thinkers, in particular, Deleuze and Derrida."—Rodolphe Gasché, SUNY Buffalo, author of The Honor of Thinking(Stanford, 2007)

"Masters of the philosophical miniature, Adorno, Benjamin, Bloch, and Kracauer were able to shine light through the smallest cracks in the facade of an increasingly opaque world. Building on their legacy, Gerhard Richter reveals himself to be no less adept at fashioning illuminating thought-images of his own. This collection of
scintillating essays is a welcome addition to the ongoing and still lively reception of Frankfurt School ideas." —Martin Jay, University of California at Berkeley

Required Reading
By Lost Lacanian
Any reader of the Frankfurt School knows that many of their books are basically collections of short aphoristic writings. There is a first order difficulty in interpreting these works. Is each aphorism meant to be read on its own? Does each build on the previous? How is the book to be understood as a whole? How does these books stand with their more commonly organized works?
In this book, Gerhard Richter returns to these works in an effort to revitalize the formal style of these writings--the Denkbild or thought-image. In masterful close readings of Adorno, Benjamin, Kracauer, and Bloch, Richter gives us a firsthand tour through the labrynth of the Denkbild and allows us to answer these questions of interpretation. Richter, through these chapters, shows himself to not only be a wonderful guide but a masterful writer of the Denkbild in his own right.
If you have never read the Frankfurt School, Richter's book would give you a great introduction, on par with Jay's Dialectical Imagination and Kellner's Critical Theory, Marxism, and Modernity. If you are schooled in the Frankfurt School, then, Ricther's book deepens your understanding of what is at stake in these friends' writing style. In a time where books on Benjamin and Adorno are more common than tabloid magazine titles, Richter's book is set apart. Moreover, he returns to the important work of Bloch and Kracauer--who are not as trendy these days. Bloch and Kracuaer are important associates of Benjamin and Adorno's and Richter is right to present them as members of the Frankfurt School.
Another interesting feature of Richter's book is that he makes connections between these writers and contemporary French theorists like Derrida, Levinas and Nancy. In that regard, Richter's book shows the affinities and dialectical possibilities between German and French thought, much like Jameson and Kellner have done.
I only have two quibbles with the book. The first is purely petty. In the introduction, Richter describes his book thus "Seeking to learn from the singular and the unverifiable, each of the chapters that follow proceeds by examining one or more Denkbilder composed by a particular writer associated with the Frankfurt School in relation to that writer's majro theoretical texts." And then, just a few lines down, he writes: "The third chapter considers Denkbilder from Kracauer's Weimar period...in relation to the theory of extraterritoriality developed in his philosophy of history and in relation to Derrida's monolingualism of the other." I thought Monolingualism of the Other was written by Derrida, not Kracauer! I wished the editor would have asked Richter to make the caveat that the Kracauer would be discussed in relation to Derrida. My second quibble is only slightly more substantive. If the French thinkers who are so popular today indeed have much in common with these Weimar period German thinkers, then, isn't the argument a bit stronger? Isn't it that the French thinkers of today have yet to say anything truly original but are merely repeating in more opaque language what Adorno, Benjamin, Kracauer, and Block grasped more dialectically decades before? It would seem that today's French thinkers do not have much in common with these thinkers but rather have much to learn from them.
All in all, Richter's book is required reading for anyone studying the Frankfurt School or any of its members. It sheds light on their peculiar style, and it provides commentary on their projects as a whole. Richter himself, it would seem, has revitalized the necesary dialectical magic of the Denkbild.

Counterinsurgency and the Global War on Terror: Military Culture and Irregular War (Stanford Security Studies), by Robert Cassidy

Since September 2001, the United States has waged what the government initially called the "global war on terrorism (GWOT)." Beginning in late 2005 and early 2006, the term Long War began to appear in U.S. security documents such as the National Security Council's National Strategy for Victory in Iraq and in statements by the U.S. Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the JCS. The description Long War—unlimited in time and space and continuing for decades—is closer to reality and more useful than GWOT.

Colonel Robert Cassidy argues that this protracted struggle is more correctly viewed as a global insurgency and counterinsurgency. Al Qaeda and its affiliates, he maintains, comprise a novel and evolving form of networked insurgents who operate globally, harnessing the advantages of globalization and the information age. They employ terrorism as a tactic, subsuming terror within their overarching aim of undermining the Western-dominated system of states. Placing the war against al Qaeda and its allied groups and organizations in the context of a global insurgency has vital implications for doctrine, interagency coordination, and military cultural change—all reviewed in this important work.

He first offers a distilled analysis of al Qaeda and its associated networks, with a particular focus on ideology and culture. In subsequent chapters, he elucidates the challenges big powers face when they prosecute counterinsurgencies, using historical examples from Russian, American, British, and French counterinsurgent wars before 2001. The book concludes with recommendations for the integration and command and control of indigenous forces and other agencies.

Review
"Altogether, the book is a useful comparative study on how military culture affects counterinsurgency doctrine and operations."—R. M. Farley, Choice

"Cassidy provides a wide ranging analysis of how national culture, defense development, and military organizational culture affects a military's ability to wage counterinsurgency. Those unfamiliar with American military history will find his discussions of American performance in Indian and hemispheric conflicts edifying... However, the greatest strength of Cassidy's book is that isn't American-centric... I recommend it for any serious student of small wars theory—and anyone interested in understanding more about today's irregular wars."—Rethinking Security

"In a very timely, interesting, and thought-provoking book, Robert Cassidy argues for re-conceptualizing what was first called the "global war on terrorism: then the "global struggle against violent extremism," and currently, the long war. Conceptualizing the long war as a global counterinsurgency requires also rethinking military culture, doctrine, and interagency coordination, and Cassidy's book does just that....a useful and important addition to the scholarship on counterinsurgency."—Political Science Quarterly

"Counterinsurgency and the Global War on Terror is a must-read for academics, military professionals, and national security practitioners. The author combines his unique perspective as a military professional with his academic credentials to create a cogent work that explains how embedded military cultural preferences can influence or impede the preparation for and conduct of counterinsurgency. In a contemporary security environment that sees the U.S. military prosecuting multiple counterinsurgencies, and where the future may hold more of the same, this well written book is very relevant. Overall, the book is balanced, insightful, and well researched. For military professionals and security experts involved in employing our armed forces in this era, this is a book to read."—Richard H. Shultz, Director, International Security Studies Program & Professor of International Politics, The Fletcher School, Tufts University

"Colonel Robert Cassidy is at the cutting edge of a new generation of US military officers who boldly contemplate global security issues, undaunted by the caveats of Summers and Weinburger and unencumbered by the baggage of Vietnam. In Counterinsurgency and the Global War on Terror, Cassidy bravely repudiates the military obsession for technology and firepower and instead methodically explores Russian, British and US military cultures for more complex lessons of success. His conclusions lead to a long term, multi-department, multi-disciplined strategy that is wiser, less industrial in scale and without the televisual qualities of a knock-down victory that is associated with US defense policy thinking. A must-read for military staff searching for an alternative dimension of experience from which to understand today's security discourse."—John Mackinlay, Kings College, London

Good book if you have need to study the subject
By Jay
I have not checked, but I would bet that this book is required reading at the various command colleges for our armed forces. The book reads like a PhD Dissertation, but that is not all bad. The sources and cites are awesome if you want to delve further into the subject.

The basis of this book is a description of what counterinsurgency is, a historical look at its uses and how we must adapt to the new global "network insurgency"! LTC Cassidy has obviously done his homework on this subject. While dry, it is probably the best meta-analysis of the subject available for lay readers.

Among the main themes for the successful prosecution of this type of conflict is the need to involve as many indigenous forces as possible, paternal control systems of occupation and scrupulous care to avoid killing "innocents". If you are a fan of Clausewitz, you are going to have a hard time getting into this!

If you are interested in delving this deep into the war on terror and where it is going, I highly recommend this book.

Some good points
By Stratiotes Doxha Theon
Despite LTC Cassidy's occasional allusions to the dubious belief that the Army is changing as necessary for the kind of
irregular warfare terrorism presents, he still makes some valid points about how the Army and other
services need to change further. LTC Cassidy makes valid observations about the American military culture of conventional
warfare thinking, but his recommendations seem to be less about cultural change and more about organizational
change. The problems he identifies seem far too entrenched for organizational tweaking to resolve them.

Some points LTC Cassidy makes with regard to how to counter insurgencies are very good points. He addresses the
cultures first of Russian, British, and American military thinking in separate chapters then summarizes the lessons
concerning "small wars" in the end. In the process of summarizing the lessons of those three, he draws on additional
experiences of the French in Indochina and Algeria. The organization of his work becomes a little difficult as the
author seems to confuse the cultural issues with organizational or tactical issues of isolated examples. If the
reader is able to separate those issues, this book has much to offer. Otherwise it may only confuse the issues.

Specifically, among the observations LTC Cassidy makes, three seem especially helpful.
First, the need to emphasize conversion/rehabilitation of enemy combatants. Rather
than capturing them and jailing them away only for questioning, making the assumption that they cannot be
rehabilitated, would it not be better to convert them - to win their hearts and minds? The very common-sense of that
question along with the example given of British and Rhodesian techniques to do just that in Malaya and Rhodesia
should provide the obvious answer.

Second, and similar to the first point, large-scale use of indigenous forces provides legitimacy where occupation-style
large American footprint does not. Again, the common sense of this thinking should be enough to immediately see the value
of this point. Though he does leave the assertion open to a wide range of interpretation as has been the case in the past.

Third, adopting realistic measures for success. LTC Cassidy, as with so many others, makes a challenge to the
traditional measures of success such as insurgent body counts. Such measures do not tell us whether or not we are
being successful at winning hearts and minds or improving the lives of those we claim to be protecting. The goal
in conventional warfare thinking has generally been to destroy the enemy army. The goal in this unconventional warfare
is to produce a lasting peace. Ignoring the population only breeds more insurgent support. The goal must be to win
and protect the population more than to kill the ever-increasing flow of insurgents.

A problem with all three of these points is that none can be mechanistically applied to every situation without an
understanding of the cultural/political context of the indigenous people. What works in one scenario is not necessarily
an universal law of counterinsurgency for all other scenarios.

Another problem is the political question. And this one LTC Cassidy may be forgiven for not addressing
as a military commander.
He states that we need to change our military in order to meet the goal of "democratization" wars. But this rather
begs the political question of whether such wars are even winnable in all cases. The sad fact remains that perhaps there are
some cultures in which democracy is not workable or even wanted. LtC Cassidy is a military man tasked with carrying
out political policies with which he may not always agree. It is not his place perhaps to question those
policies - but it is ours. It is a difficult question that underlies just how effective any cultural or
organizational changes could make in such situations.

A third problem LTC Cassidy does not address is the common mistake of confusing revolutionary nationalist insurgencies,
like those in Malaya or Vietnam, with the non-nationally focused insurgencies of global terrorism - something the title
claims to address. Little is added on the theory of counterinsurgency as it pertains specifically to the so-called
Global War on Terror. Instead, LTC Cassidy seems locked in the mindset of so many other military thinkers - still
preparing for the last war or the war we would prefer to fight.

While the author makes some very good points concerning counterinsurgency warfare, his conclusions for changing
the military seem far too little. The military and political culture that feeds it must change as a whole and not
just with organizational or tactical tweaks here and there. We also need to understand better that not every war
is one we should be fighting or that we have a chance of winning.

Despite some shortcomings, LTC Cassidy has given us a fair addition to the theory and practice of counterinsurgency.
It is a good start perhaps at addressing the issues but the solutions are unimaginative and shortsighted. Still
this work deserves a good rating for at least addressing some of the underlying problems.

The Psychological Technique of Martin Luther Thomas’ Radio Addresses, by Theodor Adorno

Theodor W. Adorno (1903-1969) was one of the twentieth century’s most influential thinkers in the areas of social theory, philosophy, aesthetics, and music. This volume reveals another aspect of the work of this remarkable polymath, a pioneering analysis of the psychological underpinnings of what we now call the Radical Right and its use of the media to propagate its political and religious agenda.

The now-forgotten Martin Luther Thomas was an American fascist-style demagogue of the Christian right on the radio in the 1930s. During these years, Adorno was living in the United States and working with Paul Lazarsfeld on the social significance of radio. This book, Adorno’s penetrating analysis of Thomas’s rhetorical appeal and manipulative techniques, was written in English and is one of Adorno’s most accessible works. It is in four parts: “The Personal Element: Self-Characterization of the Agitator,” “Thomas’ Methods,” “The Religious Medium,”and “Ideological Bait.” The importance of the study is manifold: it includes a theory of fascism and anti-semitism, it provides a methodology for the cultural study of popular culture, and it offers broad reflections on comparative political life in America and Europe.

Implicit in the book is an innovative idea about the relation between psychological and sociological reality. Moreover, the study is germane to the contemporary reality of political and religious radio in the United States because it provides an analysis of rhetorical techniques that exploit potentials of psychological regression for authoritarian aims.

Review
"Adam Yuet Chau's book provides an engaging and accessible account of Chinese popular religion in Longwanggou, a community in rural northern Shaanxi, focusing on its Black Dragon King Temple .... This book is a major achievement: an important and accessible contribution to the literature of religion in China today that deserves to be widely read."—Charles Stafford, Journal of Asian Studies

"More than an ethnographic case study on the revival of a local temple cult in Northern China, Miraculous Response is an intellectually stimulating engagement with the anthropological approach to Chinese local society, politics, and religion... Clearly written, with an engaging personal touch, Miraculous Response is an important contribution at several levels: it provides a detailed local case study of contemporary state-religion relations, describes the complex dynamics at work in rural elite politics in the post-Mao era, and provides a feast of new concepts and insights of broader relevance to anthropological history."—China Review International

"[Chau] suggests that the first key to... the religious revival in rural China is that village cadres seized upon temples and temple associations as a valuable political, economic, and symbolic resource. The second key is the incorporation of different local state agents who are motivated for reasons other than religiosity to make alliances with temple associations and temple bosses. In this regard, Miraculous Response sheds unique light on the shifting state-society relationship in China."—Journal of Chinese Religions

"Anthropologist Adam Chau's ethnographic account of the recent revival of popular religion in rural northern Shaanxi Province in China is a delightful book that is clearly written and highly recommended for undergraduate courses in anthropology, Asian studies, religious studies, rural sociology, and even political science."—The China Review

"This well-written and clearly organized study is a fascinating ethnography, a rare glimpse into the workings of a popular religious temple in contemporary China. Based on recent fieldwork in northwest China, it will appeal to readers with an interest in Chinese religion or local politics."—Robert P. Weller, Boston University
"[Chau] shows in a pertinent manner that religious activities are narrowly interwoven with the social and political milieu, and from this fact acquire some legitimacy that otherwise would be denied. . . . The study is conducted with rigour and mastery."—Chinese Cross Currents
"Miraculous Response deserves a wide readership and will be of particular interest to those who want to learn more about patterns of religious organization and practice in Chinese rural society."—The China Journal
"Chapter after chapter we find concise but very helpful discussions of some of the most basic questions confronting any researcher about what Chinese religion is..."—The China Quarterly
"...meticulous in detail and extensive in reference, this superbly written monograph exemplifies the best of ethnographic research."—Contemporary Sociology
"Chau's excellent volume serves both as an ethnography of a little-studied region as well as an invitation to scholars to seek to bring together studies of popular religion, both within China and elsewhere in the Chinese diaspora..."—Pacific Affairs

From the Inside Flap
Based on a total of 18 months of fieldwork in Shaanbei (northern Shaanxi province), this is the first book-length ethnographic case study of the revival of a popular religious temple in contemporary rural China.
The book reveals that “doing popular religion” is much more complex than praying to gods and burning incense. It examines the organizational and cultural logics that inform the staging of popular religious activities such as temple festivals. It also shows the politics behind the religious revival: the village-level local activists who seize upon temples and temple associations as a valuable political, economic, and symbolic resource, and the different local state agents who interact with temple associations and temple bosses. The study sheds unique light on shifting state-society relationships in the reform era, and is of interest to scholars and students in Asian Studies, the social sciences, and religious and ritual studies.

A neighborhood temple of hot sociality
By Brian Griffith
Chau's research is refreshingly practical. He lives at a village temple for several seasons, watching how the locals manage things. As he gets to know the leaders and rubs shoulders with festival goers, the whole situation grows as clear as the setting in a good novel. The temple functions partly as a business-generating community enterprise. It's managers include Communist party officials. The festivals are magnetic sites of "red-hot sociality." Many of the actors, singers, story tellers, and dancers used to work in state propaganda campaigns.

By the time Chau is done, you feel like you know the neighborhood. And patronizing the Black Dragon King temple seems both sensible and entertaining.

After the Propaganda State: Media, Politics, and ‘Thought Work’ in Reformed China, by Daniel Lynch

This book argues that a combination of property rights reform, administrative fragmentation, and technological advance has caused the post-Mao Chinese state to lose a significant degree of control over “thought work,” or the management of propagandistic communications flowing into and through Chinese society.

The East Asian economic meltdown of the late 1990’s has reinforced the conviction, derived from Communism’s nearly worldwide collapse a decade earlier, that the only path to sustained prosperity combines an openness to trade and investment with market economies that are minimally impinged upon by state intervention. But, the author argues, the situations in China demonstrates that the political, social, and cultural costs of “reform and opening” are high.

Notably, the construction of culture in China has fallen into the hands of lower-level government administrators, semiautonomous individuals and groups in society, and foreign-based public and private organizations. Contrary to the prevailing neo-liberal wisdom, however, this transformation has not generated a Habermasian public sphere and an autonomous civil society that will lead China inevitably toward democracy. Instead, the immediate result has been “public sphere praetorianism,” a condition in which the construction of culture becomes excessively market-oriented without being directed toward the achievement of public political goals.

The case of China shows that under such conditions, a society is set adrift and rudderless, with its members unable or unwilling to channel their energies toward the resolution of pressing public concerns, and communication flows dissolve into a patternless mosaic. True, the flows are much less constrained by government than ever before—an important precondition for democratization. But the short-term effect is actually an enervating depoliticization—even narcotization—of society, while the state itself paradoxically continues to lose control.

Finally, solid info and thoughtful analysis!
By Michael Jacobson
We've been waiting for years for a book on the Chinese communications system that not only describes it but also explains it and relates it to the economy and larger political milieu. This book is it. The author deftly details changes in the Chinese government's regulation of the communications system and shows how those changes have caused the government to lose control over information flows in Chinese society, what he calls the "symbolic environment". But unlike most commentary on the Chinese media, he doesn't see this loss of government control as contributing to China's democratization, at least not right away. Instead he sees it as causing chaos, or "praetorianism", and predicts a politically uncertain Chinese future in which neither the forces of democracy nor the forces of dictatorship can prevail. He foresees all sorts of new social movements arising in China, but not necessarily democratic movements. It's truly astonishing that this book must have been finished a good six months before the Falun Dafa movement burst upon the scene, but that's exactly the kind of movement the book predicts. A must-read for anyone interested in China.

Great historical perspective; little grasp of China today
By A Customer
I just finished the book and the pages turned well and I was impressed by the the author's use of past examples. His work on early Mao and Zhou's and Jing's roles were especially important and useful. However, I have worked in the media field in Beijing and Shanghai for nearly ten years, and I feel that the autrhor does lack adequate ideas of the media's role today. A simple monitoring of the major papers such as Beijing Youth, Southern Weekly, PLA Times, and Yangcheng Evening News, would throw many of his propositions to the wind.
So, basically kudos to the reasearch of the past, but shame on the author for not realizing that China has indeed changed greatly in the last 6 years. Too bad this was not taken into account in the book.

Free Trade And The Environment: Mexico, NAFTA, And Beyond, by Kevin Gallagher

Free Trade and the Environment examines the impact economic integration has on the environment, using Mexico, which transformed itself from one of the most closed economies to one of the world's most open, as a case study. As new nations join the Free Trade Area of the Americas or the World Trade Organization, they are considering the path taken by Mexico nearly 20 years ago.

The author investigates two commonly held and opposing beliefs in the policy community about the impact of free trade on the environment. While some believe that free trade will raise incomes in developing countries, thus encouraging governments to protect the environment, others argue that free trade simply provides an incentive for heavily polluting industries to move to developing countries with lax environmental regulations. The author shows that for Mexico in fact neither position is correct, and concludes with suggestions for free trade policies that couple environmental benefits with economic integration.

Review
"Kevin Gallagher makes an outstanding contribution to the trade-environment debate, offering some real breakthroughs in thinking about the relationship between trade expansion and environmental protection. The lessons of Mexico and NAFTA are especially timely and will resonate in many countries throughout the Western hemisphere."—Scott Vaughan, Director of the Unit for Sustainable Development and Environment, Organization of American States

"This book provides a new and insightful analysis of the trade and environment relationship. Refuting common claims that liberalization leads to either an environmental Kuznets curve or the creation of pollution havens, Kevin Gallagher demonstrates that NAFTA brought significant environmental consequences in Mexico. His findings are particularly important as more countries move toward greater regional integration around the world."—Konrad von Moltke, Senior Fellow, International Institute for Sustainable Development

"Gallagher moves the 'trade and environment' debate forward by bringing empirical evidence to bear on the question of whether expanded trade leads to environmental degradation or improvement. His data on changes in the Mexican environmental situation in the NAFTA context bring new clarity to a critical set of academic questions with important policy impacts."—Daniel C. Esty, Director, Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy

"Gallagher's study. . . provides ammunition for both defenders and detractors of the North American Free Trade Agreement. "'—Foreign Affairs

Free Trade and the Environment examines the impact economic integration has on the environment, using Mexico, which transformed itself from one of the most closed economies to one of the world’s most open, as a case study.

From the Back Cover
“Kevin Gallagher makes an outstanding contribution to the trade-environment debate, offering some real breakthroughs in thinking about the relationship between trade expansion and environmental protection. The lessons of Mexico and NAFTA are especially timely and will resonate in many countries throughout the Western hemisphere.”—Scott Vaughan, Director of the Unit for Sustainable Development and Environment, Organization of American States
“This book provides a new and insightful analysis of the trade and environment relationship. Refuting common claims that liberalization leads to either an environmental Kuznets curve or the creation of pollution havens, Kevin Gallagher demonstrates that NAFTA brought significant environmental consequences in Mexico. His findings are particularly important as more countries move toward greater regional integration around the world.”—Konrad von Moltke, Senior Fellow, International Institute for Sustainable Development

The Selected Poetry of Robinson Jeffers, by Robinson Jeffers

In 1938 Random House published The Selected Poetry of Robinson Jeffers, a volume that would remain in print for more than fifty years. For decades it drew enough poets, students, and general readers to keep Jeffers—in spite of the almost total academic neglect that followed his fame in the 1920s and 1930s—a force in American poetry.

Now scholars are at last beginning to recognize that he created a significant alternative to the High Modernism of Pound, Eliot, and Stevens. Similarly, contemporary poets who have returned to the narrative poem acknowledge Jeffers to be a major poet, while those exploring California and the American West as literary regions have found in him a foundational figure. Moreover, Jeffers stands as a crucial precursor to contemporary attempts to rethink our practical, ethical, and spiritual obligations to the natural world and the environment.

These developments underscore the need for a new selected edition that would, like the 1938 volume, include the long narratives that were to Jeffers his major work, along with the more easily anthologized shorter poems. This new selected edition differs from its predecessor in several ways. When Jeffers shaped the 1938 Selected Poetry, he drew from his most productive period (1917-37), but his career was not over yet. In the quarter century that followed, four more volumes of his poetry were published. This new selected edition draws from these later volumes, and it includes a sampling of the poems Jeffers left unpublished, along with several prose pieces in which he reflects on his poetry and poetics.

This edition also adopts the texts of the recently completed The Collected Poetry of Robinson Jeffers (five volumes, Stanford, 1988-2000). When the poems were originally published, copy editors and typesetters adjusted Jeffers's punctuation, often obscuring the rhythm and pacing of what he actually wrote, and at points even obscuring meaning and nuance. This new selected edition, then, is a much broader, more accurate representation of Jeffers's career than the previous Selected Poetry.

The Collected Poetry of Robinson Jeffers

"A masterful job of contemporary scholarly editing, this book begins an edition intended to clarify a 'Jeffers canon,' establishing for times to come the verse legacy of a poet who looked on all things with the eyes of eternity."—San Francisco Chronicle

"This edition will be standard . . . a tribute and justice to a poet whose independent strength has survived to challenge personal and public canons."—Virginia Quarterly Review

"Jeffers is the last of the major poets of his generation—Frost, Stevens, Williams, Pound, Moore, Eliot—to get his collected poems. Now that the job is at hand, it is done very well. . . . Tim Hunt has been painstaking in his editorial preparation and judicious in his presentation. . . . A great poet is ready for his due."—Philadelphia Inquirer

"Few American poets are treated as well by publishers as Jeffers is by Stanford University Press. . . . These poems represent a distinctive voice in the American canon, and it is good to have them so wonderfully set forth."—Christian Century

From Publishers Weekly
In the 1920s, on the strength of Roan Stallion, Tamar and Other Poems, Jeffers's critical reputation rivaled those of Frost and Eliotwhile the relatively frank sexual material to be found in his long, rough-hewn, often Callifornia-based narratives didn't hurt his popular reputation, as Washington State University professor Hunt notes in his introduction. After hitting the cover of Time in 1935, Jeffers (1887-1962) made a selection from his work three years later for Random House, one that has been listed as "out of stock indefinitely" for the last few years. A much more modest Random selected edition published a few years after Jeffers's death remains in print in paper, but this huge selection, culled from the monumental five-volume collected edition Hunt has edited for Stanford, is much more comprehensive, and can claim improved textual accuracy. Hunt's edition strips the punctuation added by contemporary printers (which "often obscures the rhythm and pacing of what Jeffers actually wrote, and at points even obscures meaning and nuance") and includes a carefully weighed choice of long and short works, as well as unpublished work. Jeffers's serious and sometimes morally indignant parables have most recently been taken up by Dana Gioia and others as a bulwark against Pound-and-Eliot-line modernism. This new selection will get readers closer than ever to the poems as Jeffers himself saw them, reacquainting them with "the night-wind veering, the smell of the spilt wine," and allowing readers to place him on their own. (Apr. 26) Forecast: While this selection is clearly intended to replace the Random edition, some readers may still prefer the poet's own selection (which could be provoked back into print), though this set will now have the edge on syllabi and in libraries. Further Jeffers projects from Stanford include Volume Five of The Collected Poetry, which will complete the project, slated for August, and Stones of the Sur, a book of lush Carmel coast photos by Morley Baer matched with appropriate Jeffers poems, which arrives from the press in June ($60 160p ISBN 0-8047-3942-0).

From Booklist
The somber and violent long-lined narratives of Robinson Jeffers remained so popular for so long that his Selected Poetry (1938) was in print for more than 50 years. It lacked any of the quarter-century's worth of poems Jeffers wrote after its publication, and even before it went out of print, Jeffers' reputation was reviving, thanks to younger poets who acknowledged his influence, such as Mark Jarman, and older poets of great prominence, such as Czeslaw Milosz, who testified to his power. Hence this volume that selects from all his work is most welcome. Besides poems from Jeffers' four post-1938 collections, five prose pieces Jeffers wrote about his poetry and 13 unpublished poems add nearly 200 pages to the size of the 1938 volume. The only significant works Hunt doesn't cull from are The Women at Point Sur (1927), the longest and, Hunt says, "most ambitious, complex, and difficult" of Jeffers' narratives, and the Euripidean adaptation, Medea (1946). Review
"Ultimately Jeffers poems are regenerative, inspired, dynamic, and transcendent, creating an evocative and richly rewarding, even visionary, immersion in the natural world that for all its verbosity makes the world tangible and restorative. As editor Tim Hunt observes, Jeffers's work demands more than just simple contemplation of nature, but rather 'identifying with it and recognizing one's final and inevitable participation in it.'"—Jeffery Beam, Oyster Boy Review

"[I]t is hard to see how anyone can read Jeffers's best poetry and not perceive greatness. His narrative verse rivals Wordsworth's or Byron's. It is electrifying; the skin prickles. . . . We will lose something of value if we let Jeffers slip away. He expresses California's peculiar ambience with unsurpassed vividness."—Los Angeles Times Book Review

"Tim Hunt, one of the nation's leading Jeffers scholars, has done a masterful job of sorting and choosing from a huge amount of material."—San Francisco Chronicle

"Most welcome . . . a volume for the core of American literature collections."—Booklist

"The little prose Jeffers wrote is of the highest quality and the best of it is fortunately included in the back of The Selected Poetry."—New York Review
"This is the second such collection. The first, from Random House in 1938, remained in print for more than 50 years. Hunt, editor of the five volumes of The Collected Poetry of Robinson Jeffers, now provides an excellent replacement."—Virginia Quarterly Review
"One of the major virtues of this selection is its appeal to ecologically-oriented readers. . . . From any critical angle or interest, this Selected Poetry is the best entry into Jeffers's major work."—ISLE
"No other American poet has so emphatically preached the saving graces of nature, from galaxies to granite. Jeffers is more than the consummate poet of California and the Pacific Ocean, as many East Coast literati have called him with condescension. He is a poet of transhuman beauty, of disturbing prophecy. Freed from the shackle of his narrative poems, he stands as the preeminent American poet of nature, ecology, and science . . . he is one of our most important writers."—Science Magazine

A Carmel Poet
By Flounder
Robinson Jeffers is most often considered a minor figure in the twentieth century American literature canon. Countless instructors haven't even heard of him, but that is a shame. Some professors even skip the Jeffers section in American literature anthologies. With the publication of this long-awaited anthology (in paperback), there is plenty of evidence here to suggest that Jeffers is a major figure of influence.
Jeffers had a transcendental vision. He built a poet's niche in Carmel, where he commented on nature's cosmic cycles, its beauty and violence, which he saw as expressions of God's character. Jeffers was a poet of the Carmel landscape--weather worn granite, tumultous surf, birds of prey, twisted coastal cypress--he also approached descriptions of humanity's arrogance and weakness in light of its fascination with war, violence, and self-inscribed bloodshed. Jeffers espoused a poetic doctrine of Inhumanism, which was perhaps a reflection of his own personal misanthropy: humans are atoms to be split.
Some of my favorite poems are here: "Shine, Perishing Republic," "Boats in a Fog," "Carmel Point," "Divine Superfluous Beauty," "Tower Beyond Tragedy," "Bed by the Window," "Una," "The Deer Lay Down Their Bones," and even some of his last writing. I remember a certain Shakespeare class in which I read "Shine, Perishing Republic" on the day after the LA riots.
Robert Hass (UC Berkeley), C. Milosz (Emeritus, UC Berkeley), and William Everson have been poet champions of Jeffers' work. But one scholar, in particular, has dedicated his academic life to understanding that creative pulse, which inspired Jeffers to his pen. That notable scholar is Robert J. Brophy.
I highly recommend this anthology. I also recommend the scholarship of Robert Brophy. I can say with pleasure and esteem that I have benefited from his scholarship and literature courses at Cal State U., Long Beach. Bob Brophy introduced me to Jeffers (via a Jeffers course and a Tor House tour, 10/91); I have introduced Jeffers and his work to my own students, and I will forever be touched by his gentle, guiding hand.

A rugged poetry, reflecting the terrain
By Glynn Young
I have on my bookshelf “Can Poetry Save the Earth: A Field Guide to Nature Poems” (2010) by John Felsteiner. I found it in the gift shop at the Missouri Botanical Garden, in the “ecology and activism” section. It’s the kind of book I can’t read straight through. Too much of a fixation on a theme (especially a political theme) is a bit too much to take at once; it’s better consumed in small bites.

One of those bites was about a poet named Robinson Jeffers (1887-1962). In fact, references to Jeffers are sprinkled throughout the book, almost as much as those to Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost. (Surprisingly, Wendell Berry is mentioned only twice in almost 360 pages of text.) The chapter on Jeffers was intriguing enough to lead me to his “Selected Poetry,” first published in 1938 and republished in 2013.

This is a collection that’s not for the fainthearted. The first poem is “Tamar,” a narrative poem that occupies about 60 pages of the 600-page work. This is the poem, in fact, that established Jeffers as a major poet when it was first published in 1924. If you’re familiar with the novels of William Faulkner, especially “The Sound and the Fury,” then you will be familiar with some of the themes and ideas of “Tamar,” themes like violence, incest, and illicit love. To be fair to Jeffers, “Tamar” came before “The Sound and the Fury;” if there was influence involved, Then Faulkner was the one influenced.

“Selected Poems” contains several long poems, although none as long as “Tamar.” Long narrative poems require close reading; otherwise, you can lose the thread of the story. Most of the poems in the collection, however, are about nature, geography, topography, and the natural world. Here’s one example:
People And A Heron
A desert of weed and water-darkened stone under my western windows
The ebb lasted all afternoon,
And many pieces of humanity, men, women, and children, gathering shellfish,
Swarmed with voices of gulls the sea-breach.
At twilight they went off together, the verge was left vacant, an
evening heron
Bent broad wings over the black ebb,
And left me wondering why a lone bird was dearer to me that many people.
Well: rare is dear: but also I suppose
Well reconciled with the world but not with our own natures
we grudge to see them
Reflected on the world for a mirror.
As a child, Jeffers was trained in the Bible and theology; his father was a Presbyterian minister. Before he became a full-time poet, he tried his hand at a number of things. A volume of verse was published in 1916, but it was “Tamar” that established his reputation. He and his wife Una lived at Tor House in Carmel, California, and much of his poetry reflected the region.

He went into something of a poetic eclipse after World War II; his poetry was considered by some to be unpatriotic (the late 1940s and early 1950s were not a good time to be considered unpatriotic) and his philosophy seemed to advance the idea that the extinction of the human race might be a good thing. It was some time before he was discovered (or rediscovered) by the environmental movement, and today he is something of an environmental patron saint, just not as well known as Rachel Carson and John Muir. And thus his inclusion in “Can Poetry Save the Earth.”

Jeffers’ poetry is a rugged poetry, reflective of the terrain that figures so largely in his work. It might even be best read in a nature preserve, a national park, or someplace away from the noise of civilization, or perhaps overlooking the Pacific Ocean near Carmel.

timely
By dwain confer
Jeffers would not be surprised by the timeliness of his poetry as issues of globalization, war, terror, environmental carelessness, and hubris once again flood our daily lives. His poetry resonates with a distaste for the very "inhumanities"--though he would consider them wholly human--that have brought us to this state of the world. The endless cycle which he mentions so many time is repeating itself once again, and his wisdoms and voice are gathered into a wonderful collection of his finest poetry.

One reading Jeffers in search of hope for humanity will be sorely disappointed, as his inhumanism is present on every page. It is not hopeless, however; the beauty of nature and the wild god of the world persist despite man's best efforts to tame and abolish them. Poems like "Vulture" are the only glimmer of hope that Jeffers has for mankind: recognize our place in the world and embrace it. That is the ultimate existence.
