The Challenge of Remaining Innovative: Insights from Twentieth-Century American Business (Innovation and Technology in the World E)From

The Challenge of Remaining Innovative explores innovation as a complex phenomenon that may be organizational as well as technological, that operates both within firms and across the broader economy, and that involves matters not only of research and development, but also of marketing, design, and government relations. The contributors explore two main themes: the challenge of remaining innovative and the necessity of managing institutional boundaries in doing so.

The collection is organized into four parts, which move outward from individual firms; to networks or clusters of firms; to consultants and other intermediaries in the private economy who operate outside of the firms themselves; and finally to government institutions and politics. This scheme delineates a variety of ways in which entrepreneurship has persisted across the 20th century—and accentuates how ongoing organizational re-arrangement has contributed mightily to its sustained vitality.

"These essays collectively allow the reader to walk a mile in the shoes of corporate managers faced with the difficult task of generating and sustaining innovation. As the authors vividly demonstrate, managers simultaneously built in-house R&D labs, forged external relationships, and monitored regulatory developments in order to 'reduce the uncertainty inherent in innovation and transform it into a manageable risk."—Eric S. Hintz, Technology & Culture

Unpublished Writings from the period of Unfashionable Observations: Volume 11 (The Complete Works of Friedrich Nietzsche), by Friedrich Ni

This is the third volume to appear in an edition that will be the first complete, critical, and annotated English translation of all of Nietzsche's work. Volume 2: Unfashionable Observations, translated by Richard T. Gray, was published in 1995; Volume 3: Human, All Too Human (I), translated by Gary Handwerk, was published in 1997. The edition is a new English translation, by various hands, of the celebrated Colli-Montinari edition, which has been acclaimed as one of the most important works of scholarship in the humanities in the last half century.

The present volume provides for the first time English translations of all of Nietzsche's unpublished notebooks from the summer of 1872 to the end of 1874. The major works published in this period were the first three Unfashionable Observations: "David Strauss the Confessor and the Writer," "On the Utility and Liability of History for Life," and "Schopenhauer as Educator." Translations of the preliminary notes for these pieces are coordinated with the translations of the published texts printed in Volume 2: Unfashionable Observations.

The content of these notebooks goes far beyond the notes and plans for published and unpublished Unfashionable Observations, encompassing numerous sketches related to Nietzsche's major philological project from this period, a book on the pre-Platonic Greek philosophers. The ideas that emerged from Nietzsche's deliberations on these early Greek thinkers are absolutely central to his thought from this period and contribute in significant ways to the development of several of his major themes: the role of the philosopher vis-à-vis his age and the surrounding culture; the relationships among philosophy, art, and culture; the metaphorical nature of language and its relationship to knowledge; the unmasking of the modern drive for absolute "truth" as a palliative against the horror of existence; and Nietzsche's "unfashionable" attack on modern science and modern culture, especially on the Germany of the Bismarck Reich. These notebooks represent important transitional documents in Nietzsche's intellectual development, marking, among other things, the shift away from philological studies toward unabashed cultural criticism.

Review
"The Colli-Montinari edition has revolutionized our understanding of one of the greatest German thinkers. As a result of the new view opened up by this edition, Nietzsche has clearly come into his own as one of the more important philosophers of modern times. The English-language edition should become a classic that will be used by generations of scholars."—David E. Wellbery, The Johns Hopkins University

"The Colli-Montinari critical edition of Nietzsche's works is one of the most important works of scholarship in the humanities in the last quarter century. It was not until after World War II that one began to realize the extent to which Nietzsche's notebooks had been tampered with, jumbled, badly deciphered, and poorly edited, and it was not until the Colli-Montinari edition that scholars could be confident for the first time of having a trustworthy text."—Van A. Harvey, Stanford University

Thumbs up to Stanford Univ Press
By Wil Sinda
Nietzsche has gained much fame and notoriety over the 100 years since his death. This has, unfortunately, led many people to believe that they have some idea what he wrote, why and when. The other "reviews" here are a case in point.
The writings here are from the period just after The Birth of Tragedy. Specifically, these are notes and fragments from the period of the Untimely Meditations, here called Unfashionable Observations, basically 1872-74.
I was struck by the richness of these jottings, and by the breadth of topic and subject. You can find insights concerning semiology and linguistics, politics and sociology, etc., written with refreshing originality and boldness. What surprised me most of all is how readable this volume is. In some ways, it is more engaging than the published texts of the same period.
One more thing, Nietzsche's cerebral breakdown occurred many years after this period, and even so, it is quite dubious to call his writings into question even from that later period. His problem was organic, not psychological. And secondly, anyone who thinks that the value of reading Nietzsche is for "a couple of clever quotes to throw around at dinner-parties", has really missed something.
Anyone who has studied Nietzsche's philosophy will be thrilled by this collection of notes. Not only do they throw light on the Unfashionable Observations; they show how wide reaching Nietzsche's interests were at such an early period.

Has a great index, notes, and an afterword.
By Bruce P. Barten
The value of this book depends entirely on the ability of the reader to think about it. I happened to enjoy it as confirmation of many efforts I have previously made to understand Nietzsche and the world at large, and this review pays far too much attention to the world, which is as at large as ever.
Long ago, I had the opportunity to consider what Nietzsche thought about a normal appreciation for the truth, compared to the opposite which he discovered in what was most forceful. "When the Christian crusaders in the Orient encountered the invincible order of Assassins, . . . whose lowest ranks followed a rule of obedience the like of which no order of monks ever attained, they obtained in some way or other a hint concerning that symbol and watchword reserved for the highest ranks alone as their secretum: `Nothing is true, everything is permitted.' " (ON THE GENEALOGY OF MORALS, translated by Walter Kaufmann, p. 150). This collection of notebooks of private thoughts, which Nietzsche did not publish, reflect the process in which he prepared his work. Trying to find some secret doctrine, which the public could never understand, seems to be like trying to understand everything, as dangerous as any other aspect of his thought.
In 1872 or early 1873, he had written, "Conversely, we are returning to culture in a sectarian manner, we are trying once again to suppress the philosopher's immeasurable knowledge and convince him of the anthropomorphic character of all knowledge." (p. 57). This is so true, I need only mention GENIUS by Harold Bloom, in which "A Mosaic of One Hundred Exemplary Creative Minds" are explained by classifications which seek to glorify how individuals think. Otherwise, in our culture, "Groupthink is the blight of our Age of Information, and is most pernicious in our obsolete academic institutions, whose long suicide since 1967 continues. The study of mediocrity, whatever its origins, breeds mediocrity." (Bloom, p. ix).
When Nietzsche was becoming an expert in Greek civilization, learning about the Pre-Platonic philosophers, a battle was fought at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, early in July, 1863. The Confederacy lost that battle, but in 1870-1871, the newly united states of Germany, under Prussia, having organized its troops for rapid deployment, had triumphed in a war with France. Long years of division and deprivation had prepared Germany to become the economic powerhouse which it is today, third in the world, following the United States and Japan. In the monetary system of the world, the dollar, the yen, and now the euro are the leading currencies. The state of financial collapse which is now a threat to the dominance of globalization is best imagined by considering Iraq like Gettysburg, a battle dragged out for years instead of days, in which the United States, the chief invader (England was the foreign power which offered the most support for the Confederacy during the American Civil War), has managed to remain in the area, which it considers a battlefield on which it may yet triumph. In his notebook, Nietzsche sought the "Value of truthfulness. --It does indeed improve things! Its aim is decline. It sacrifices. Our art is the likeness of desperate knowledge." (p. 57)
Though Nietzsche has been dead for over a hundred years, the range of his thought is accessible to people who are willing to search within themselves for whatever is the matter with their situations. Trouble? I could show you trouble. Compared to the twentieth century, thinking about America in Iraq seems to be the most hopeful way to go for anyone who has hoped for money, or oil, or power, or the opportunity to be right in a way that the world can't deny. But Nietzsche went looking into the big question, and found:
"When among the tumult at the outbreak of the last great war an embittered French scholar called the Germans barbarians and accused them of lacking culture, people in Germany still listened closely enough to take deep offense at this; and it gave many journalists the opportunity to polish brightly the armor of their culture, . . . and venerable Carlyle publicly praised precisely those qualities in the Germans and, for the sake of these qualities, gave their victory his blessing, then everyone was clear about German culture; and after the experience of success, it was certainly quite innocuous to speak of the victory of German culture. Today, when the Germans have enough time to examine in retrospect many of the words flung at us then, there are probably a few who recognize that the Frenchman was right: the Germans are barbarians, despite all those human qualities." (p. 93). The distinction Nietzsche would like to draw is regarding the future: "the hope for an emerging culture vindicates the Germans: whereas one gives no deference to a degenerate and exhausted culture." (p. 93). It is necessary to look in another book to find the phrase of Goethe which Nietzsche was to include in his published work. "But another couple of centuries may have to pass before our countrymen will have absorbed sufficient spirit and higher culture for one to be able to say of them: it has been a long time since they were barbarians." (UNFASHIONABLE OBSERVATIONS, p. 10). Since the United States bombed bridges and buildings in Europe in 1999 to react to a civil war in which a ruling party there seemed uncivilized to us, perhaps the stance of the German and French people today tries to seem more cultured than the Americans as their last, best hope to avoid the terrorists that can do far more to hasten the decline of civilization than America would acting alone.

Nietzsche is a rising star in westwern philosophy, also, he stands as one of the worlds most recognized names in philosophy. Deserving or not, especially when considering the giants: like Kant or Jesus, Nietzsche has captured the hearts and minds of modern man. A philosopher who lives his philosophy, a philosophy that enlightens the thoughts of men like Jesus and brings down two their knees men like Kant. For those readers afraid of 'high-brow' tautologies, difficult and arcane terminology, then fear not Nietzsche, he is approachable. The only warning I may provide is, 'beware of Nietzsche, for he holds the power to change your life; worse, he will change the way you live it!'.

How do high wage countries stay rich in a global digital economy? How Revolutionary was the Digital Revolution constructs a framework for analyzing the international digital era: one that examines the ability of political actors to innovate and experiment in spite of, or perhaps because of, the constraints posed by digital technology.

In order to assess the revolutionary nature of the digital era, this book takes four overlapping approaches. First, it examines the reaction of nations, specifically Finland, Japan, and emerging markets, to the dual challenges of globalization and technological change. This section identifies both successful and failed national experiments intended to deal with these dual pressures. Second, it assesses corporate attempts to leverage digital technology to reorganize work. A broad range of issues including off-shoring, open source production systems, and knowledge management are addressed. Third, devoting detailed analysis to the case of mobile telephones, the book offers insights into the political economy of market evolution in the digital era. The final section considers the political ramifications of information technology for critical societal debates ranging from privacy to intellectual property.

The contributors to the book map out how the digital revolution shakes up politics, creating new economic and political winners and losers. In order to do so, they connect theories of political economy to the implications of digital technology for international as well as national markets.

Review
"This wide-ranging volume is essential reading for anyone interested in the ongoing structural transformations and future challenges posed by information and communication technology (ICT) in Europe, the U.S., and Asia. The book provides extremely important insights into the political economy of the global digital era and helps us understand the interplay of technology, corporate strategy, and public policy. Understanding this interplay at all levels—corporate, national, and international—is the key to fully utilizing the potential of ICT and to enhance long-term economic growth."—Erkki Liikanen, Governor, Bank of Finland, Former Commissioner for Enterprise and Information Society of the European Union

“This outstanding volume provokes reflection on the vast changes in the world economy caused by the digital revolution. The editors and the authors provide not only facts but creative ideas: fresh thoughts about how to understand the relationship among technology, corporate strategy, public policy, and the global marketplace. It differentiates among what is global and what remains distinctively national. This book should be read by everybody interested in important issues concerning employment, wealth, and power. It helps redefine the ‘conversation’ we are having about globalization.”—Peter Gourevitch, University of California, San Diego

“This book looks at the digital revolution from a number of perspectives, providing an essential reflection on an important topic. Which aspects of corporate strategies, national institutions, and technology investments led to major successes, and which did not? The book addresses these questions by examining specific cases using multiple disciplinary approaches. It provides valuable insights into the future evolution of the economy, technology, and business strategy, not just recent history. Read it.”—Stuart I. Feldman, Vice President, Computer Science, IBM Research

From the Inside Flap

Selling the True Time: Nineteenth-Century Timekeeping in America, by Ian Bartky

This book studies the transition from local to national timekeeping, a process that led to Standard Time—the world-wide system of timekeeping by which we all live. Prior to the railroads’ adoption of Standard Railway Time in 1883, timekeeping was entirely a local matter, and America lacked any uniform system to coordinate times and public activities. For example, in the middle of the nineteenth century, Boston had three authoritative times, which differed by seconds and minutes.

The story begins in the 1830s with the building of the first railroads. Since railway safety depended upon maintaining the temporal separation of trains through precise timing, railroads were the first to establish time standards to govern their operations. The railroads’ switch to five time standards indexed to the Greenwich meridian inaugurated the modern era of public timekeeping and led directly to cities adopting Greenwich-indexed civil time zones.

Central to the story are those college and university astronomers who, starting in the 1850s, sold time signals to nearby cities and railroads. From the start, they competed with other entrepreneurs trying to make money by selling time. Decades of negotiations, government lobbying, and battles over customers followed, all in the name of “public service.” Improvements by a host of clockmakers, civil and electrical engineers, telegraph and railway technicians, and instrument makers finally changed the market for accurate time. Public timekeeping became the realm of business investors.

Despite the efforts of astronomers and various of their Congressional supporters, who argued for the necessity of a national system of time authorized by the federal government, the railroads’ success with their own system blocked legislation for a national system of time until the First World War. By then, a single source for correct time dominated the public’s timekeeping: the U.S. Naval Observatory’s noon signal.

In this first comprehensive, scholarly history of timekeeping in America, the author has drawn upon a rich, untapped archival record, municipal and legislative documents, newspapers, and science and engineering journals to challenge several myths that have grown up around the subject.

From Publishers Weekly
Once upon a time it could be 3:30 p.m. in Albany, 3:35 in Vermont and 3:20 in Brooklyn, for when long-distance travel meant horses and canals, few people could be sure what time it was, and fewer stood to lose if they guessed slightly wrong. Technically right times (mean solar times), after all, varied from place to place: the sun sets in Albany several minutes before it goes down in Buffalo. But for railways, strict times were essential; without consistent scheduling, passengers missed connections--and trains could collide. An 1853 crash spurred railroad companies to buy exact times from astronomical observatories, whose measurements could be more precise than ground-level clocks. The next few decades saw regional and national struggles over synchronization, as railroads tried to standardize their systems while competing with one another--and to stave off congressional interference. Who would acquire the power to say what time it was? Bartky's specialized but absorbing study of time and timekeeping focuses on astronomers, railroads, inventors and politicians to tell the intricate story of how Standard Railway Time (adopted in 1883, and based on the Greenwich Meridian) came to be. Tracking Americans' shifting "time awareness... from local to regional, and then to national time," the volume is the first broad study of 1800s timekeeping. Amply footnoted and sometimes dry, this is an academic book--but one that should draw serious readers from many fields. Much of it involves the history of science and technology, and the struggles inside and among scientific institutions. But political and business history also enter in: the tale of how most of us came to agree on the time provides, as Bartky says, "an object lesson in how science, government, and private interest can interact." 26 illus. From Library Journal
Quite limited in scope, this is the study of how astronomers at various observatories sold accurate time to local and regional railroads, eventually resulting in standardized time zones in the United States. Journalist Bartky (Scientific American and Railroad History magazines) revels in the minutiae of a century of progress owing not so much to advancements in time-keeping devices as to the moneymaking schemes of the directors of cash-strapped observations. Twenty years in the making, the project was begun while the author worked for the National Bureau of Standards in the 1970s. A third of the book's 300-plus pages consists of reference matter (notes, appendixes, and bibliography), attesting to the depth of his research in various archival collections. This book fills a narrow gap in scholarship-and fills it completely. Historian of science and railroad buffs will appreciate this niche book, but others may find the specificity too restrictive. Recommended primarily for academic libraries.

Revealing and involving in its depth and detail
By Midwest Book Review
While it may be hard to easily categorize this title, it should become a mainstay of college-level collections of all sizes and types. Selling the True Time studies the transition from local to national timekeeping and a world-wide system of keeping time in the late 1800s. Until the railroads become involved, American lacked any uniform system to coordinate times: this charts the early involvement of the railroads in a process which transformed the world. Revealing and involving in its depth and detail, this is highly recommended.

In the 1990s, societies across the world were confronted with a sudden mass inflow of Chinese migrants. Transnational Chinese investigates the global nature of this migration by focusing on one of the fastest growing groups of new Chinese international migrants: those from Fujian province in southern China. It specifically focuses on Fujianese migration to Europe, where a broad range of immigration regimes has provided various incentives and disincentives that have influenced their migratory patterns across the continent. Applying intensive, multisited fieldwork research in the United Kingdom, Hungary, and Italy, as well as sending areas in Fujian, Transnational Chinese investigates the origins and mechanics of Fujianese migration, the work and life of Fujianese migrants in Europe, and the many transnational spaces that connect Fujianese across Europe, the United States, and China.

The Great Social Laboratory charts the development of the human sciences—anthropology, human geography, and demography—in late nineteenth- and twentieth-century Egypt. Tracing both intellectual and institutional genealogies of knowledge production, this book examines social science through a broad range of texts and cultural artifacts, ranging from the ethnographic museum to architectural designs to that pinnacle of social scientific research—"the article."

Omnia El Shakry explores the interface between European and Egyptian social scientific discourses and interrogates the boundaries of knowledge production in a colonial and post-colonial setting. She examines the complex imperatives of race, class, and gender in the Egyptian colonial context, uncovering the new modes of governance, expertise, and social knowledge that defined a distinctive era of nationalist politics in the inter- and post-war periods. Finally, she examines the discursive field mapped out by colonial and nationalist discourses on the racial identity of the modern Egyptians.

Review
"This excellent and well-researched book recounts the formation and application of colonial knowledge—especially of ethnography, human geography, and demography—in the attempts to modernize and govern Egypt. It makes a significant contribution to the important debate about colonial modernity that has so far been largely confined to India."—Talal Asad, City University of New York, author of Formations of the Secular

"The Great Social Laboratory is a brilliant study of the tension between imperial projects and nationalist imaginings. Examining the ways in which colonial Egypt became a site and object of social scientific knowledge, Omnia El Shakry offers a seminal contribution to debates about the place of colonialism in the development of modern science."—Timothy Mitchell, New York University

"Omnia El Shakry's contribution is a rich and erudite one. It draws on a range of archival sources in Arabic, French, and English, offering original readings of texts and political events of Egypt in the first half of the twentieth century. Her argument is eloquent and the evidence compelling. The Great Social Laboratory is an essential addition to courses across the critical social sciences and humanities."—Journal of Middle East Women's Studies

Not only brillant, but beautifully written. A must read along the lines of Donald Reid's "Cairo University and the Making of Modern Egypt" and Timothy Mitchell's "Colonizing Egypt."

(Re)Negotiating East and Southeast Asia: Region, Regionalism, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) (Studies in Asian Secu

This book seeks to explain two core paradoxes associated with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN): How have diverse states hung together and stabilized relations in the face of competing interests, divergent preferences, and arguably weak cooperation? How has a group of lesser, self-identified Southeast Asian powers gone beyond its original regional purview to shape the form and content of Asian Pacific and East Asian regionalisms?

According to Alice Ba, the answers lie in ASEAN's founding arguments: arguments that were premised on an assumed regional disunity. She demonstrates how these arguments draw critical causal connections that make Southeast Asian regionalism a necessary response to problems, give rise to its defining informality and consensus-seeking process, and also constrain ASEAN's regionalism. Tracing debates about ASEAN's intra- and extra-regional relations over four decades, she argues for a process-driven view of cooperation, sheds light on intervening processes of argument and debate, and highlights interacting material, ideational, and social forces in the construction of regions and regionalisms.

Review
"There are two main reasons for highly recommending this study. First, the arguments advanced here are built on painstaking empirical work based on archival and interview-based study. Second, Ba's book is by far the most incisive study of the unstated rationales that inform ASEAN's founding and continued role in East Asian security . . . With its comprehensive scope, sophisticated arguments, and lucid narrative, this book is essential reading for beginners and scholars alike."—Deepak Nair, Contemporary Southeast Asia

"Alice Ba has given us a carefully framed, closely researched volume on ASEAN and East Asian regionalism . . . (Re)Negotiating East and Southeast Asia is an impressive volume that offers quite a few new insights into East and Southeast Asian regionalism and suggests an approach to regionalism itself that could well serve the interpretation of other instances. It is highly recommended for class use on East and Southeast Asia and should be of interest to specialists on regionalism more generally."—Donald Crone, Pacific Affairs

"In this stimulating work, Ba provides a new interpretation that fills important gaps in our understanding of ASEAN. Her theoretical categories and empirical analysis allow her to come closer than most in capturing the spoken and unspoken rationales behind ASEANs actions and policies—and in ways that the policymakers of the region will recognize and applaud. A must-read for all those who want to come to grips with the regional architecture of East and Southeast Asia." —Yuen Foong Khong, Professor of International Relations, Oxford University

Organizational Strategy, Structure, and Process (Stanford Business Classics), by Raymond Miles, Charles Snow

"Books and articles come and go, endlessly. But a few do stick, and this book is such a one. Organizational Strategy, Structure, and Process broke fresh ground in the understanding of strategy at a time when thinking about strategy was still in its early days, and it has not been displaced since."

—David J. Hickson, Emeritus Professor of International Management & Organization, University of Bradford School of Management

Originally published in 1978, Organizational Strategy, Structure, and Process became an instant classic, as it bridged the formerly separate fields of strategic management and organizational behavior. In this Stanford Business Classics reissue, noted strategy scholar Donald Hambrick provides a new introduction that describes the book's contribution to the field of organization studies. Miles and Snow also contribute new introductory material to update the book's central concepts and themes.

Organizational Strategy, Structure, and Process focuses on how organizations adapt to their environments. The book introduced a theoretical framework composed of a dynamic adaptive cycle and an empirically based strategy typology showing four different types of adaptation. This framework helped to define subsequent research by other scholars on important topics such as configurational analysis, organizational fit, strategic human resource management, and multi-firm network organizations.

Review
"Miles and Snow's path-breaking work seems as fresh and original today as when it was originally published. Their pioneering efforts at linking strategy, structure, process, and a management mindset is a model for today's researchers who seek to be both academically respectable yet managerially relevant. This book belongs in the core collection of any manager or serious student of strategy organization or management." —Christopher Bartlett, Thomas D. Casserly Professor of Business
Administration, Harvard Business School

"I grew up with Organizational Strategy, Structure, and Process as the primary intellectual framework for understanding business-level strategy. Now, twenty-five years later, this book remains as relevant and insightful as when it was written. All those who are interested in business strategy, whether, an academic or a manager, need to read this book as a foundational text." —S. Ghoshal,Professor of Strategic Leadership, London Business School

"In an era of growing institutional failure, this book offers a great invitation for prototyping new forms of self-managing dynamic and innovative alliances instead of the old stagnating firms. It highlights an emerging organizational paradigm or recipe of Op Win Net, as an expanded theory of the new types of un-firms like Linux. Such a knowledge recipe will offer insights on how to start to develop meta capabilities like a Mega Brain to tap and insource the often invisible resources outside the territory of the traditional firm, as the capital in waiting, and to turn that intellectual capital into wealth for its stakeholders. The book is a must for the organizational designer of future wealth creation. I am most intrigued and stimulated by this book." —Leif Edvinsson,Lund University

Framework for strategy classification
By Gerard Kroese
Raymond E. Miles is Professor Emeritus and former Dean of the Haas School of Business, University of California, Berkeley. Charles C. Snow is Professor of Business Administration at Penn State University. The original version of this book was published in 1978, whereby this review involves the Stanford Business Classics 2003-version which includes an additional foreword and a new introduction. The book is split in 3 parts, with the first part consisting of 10 chapters, the second part of 3 chapters, while the final part provides an overview of the literature.

The authors start firmly in the first introductory chapter: "An organization is both an articulated purpose and an established mechanism for achieving it." Miles and Snow believe that the complexity of the adjustment process can be penetrated by searching for patterns in the behavior of organizations. The cornerstones of the framework consist of 3 pivotal ideas introduced and developed by a number of other authors: (1) Organizations act to create their environment. (2) Management's strategic choices shape the organization's structure and process. (3) Structure and process constrain strategy.

The book has five major objectives. In the second chapter the authors introduce the first objective, which is to develop an understanding of the process by which organizations continually adjust to their environments. The second objective is to provide an explanation for the alternative forms of adaptive behavior which exist in the industries studied by the authors and which are probably present in most other industries. In the second chapter a typology of these forms of organization, termed `strategic types' are presented and further elaborated in chapters 3 through to 6. In chapter 7 the authors pursue the third objective, the development of an approach for diagnosing the relationship between organizations and their environments that utilizes the adaptive cycle and the four strategic types. The authors' fourth objective is to create a heightened awareness of the degree to which successful organizational diagnosis and change hinges on managers' theories about how people can and should be managed. In chapter 9 the authors address the fifth and final objective, which is to create a conceptual foundation for the examination of emerging organizational forms. Chapter 10 summarizes and concludes on the major points offered in the first 9 chapters. It also speculates about future organizational forms and management theories. "Our theoretical framework is in no sense complete, as modifications and extensions will undoubtedly occur. ... We did not reach the summit, but we have a good idea where the best route lies." The final 4 chapters supply more detailed descriptions of the authors' research and interpretation of the literature. Final chapter 14 is a nontechnical overview of the literature related to organization-environment relations.

Yes, I do like this book. In retrospect one can say that this book has helped to launch the configurational view of strategy. The introduced framework allowed to be extended of the issues covered in the book and launched further strategy classification systems. The book is relatively simple to read and has a very good structure. I feel that this book together with Alfred Chandler's Strategy & Structure, Igor Ansoff's Corporate Strategy and Michael Porter's Competitive Strategy provides the starting point for anybody interested in the field of strategic management, including MBA students.

Fantastic Foreword for a Standard in the Field and a Reflexive Source of Research
By Fred Cheyunski
Finding this edition of Miles and Snow’s classic book was a pleasant welcome surprise for this reviewer. In addition to the original work, there is an excellent foreword by Donald Hambrick that puts its contribution to organization studies into perspective.

The book itself describes the manner in which organizations adapt to their environment pursuing four basic strategy types: Defenders (prosper through stability, reliability, efficiency), Prospectors (thrive on stimulating and/or meeting new product – market opportunities), Analyzers (more innovative than Prospectors vs. Defenders, but more cautious and deliberate than Prospectors), and Reactors (vacillate in approach).

Familiar with the concepts, this reviewer appreciated the way Hambrick shows how Michael Porter subsequently presented his similar generic strategies on cost leadership, differentiation emphases and ways to map value chain activities. He was also delighted with the connection to Michael Treacy and Fred Wiersema’s description of 3 strategic orientations or “Disciplines of Market Leaders” (operational excellence, product leadership, customer intimacy) much like those presented by Miles and Snow.

Because of these connections, links to earlier management concepts and those that have come since make this volume especially valuable. For instance, one can see the similarities with Geoffrey Moore’s recent reissue of his “Crossing the Chasm” (3rd edition) description of technology adoption with Miles and Snow’s adaptive cycle – businesses cycling through entrepreneurial problem (selecting/adjusting product market domain), engineering problem (producing and delivering products – services), administrative problem (establishing roles, relationships, organizational processes). In many ways, this book can help enrich other such parallels with research by various scholars on topics such as configuration analysis, organizational fit, strategic human resource management, and multi-firm network organizations.

For such a reflexive and useful source of research consult “Organizational Strategy, Structure, and Process” (Stanford Business Books edition).
