The story of the apparition of the Virgin of Guadalupe to a poor indigenous man less than fifteen years after the Spanish conquest of Mexico did not come into prominence until the mid-seventeeth century. The first known telling of the tale appeared in a book published in Spanish in 1648 by the priest Miguel Sánchez. On the heels of the Sánchez version, the story was included in the book Huei tlamahuiçoltica published in 1649 by Luis Laso de la Vega, the vicar of the Guadalupe chapel and a friend of Sánchez. It had little impact initially, but by the twentieth century, with indigenism triumphant, it had become the best known version.

There have been a few translations of Laso de la Vega's apparition story into English but only on a popular or devotional level. The present edition offers a translation and transcription of the complete text of the 1649 edition, together with critical apparatus, including comparisons of the Sánchez and Laso de la Vega texts, and various linguistic, orthographic, and typographical matters that throw light on the date and manner of composition.

This is a legible printed version of the first reports of a report which became the legendary Virgin which became the celebrated Icon of Mexican catholocism. It is not evaluated for the truth of the ledgend but is a clear report of what has been written.

I think that this should be used as a textbook if it isn't already. I think it was fair, balenced and her insight is spot on. I'd like to thank her for not only talking with sex workers, but even more learning how to listen to what they were saying. As seen in this book.

Best Balanced Collection of Essays Ever

Usually when I source a book on prostitution and ethics, one perspective (libertarian or prohibition) is taken and no other. Not so with Spector's collection. She brings many voices to the table: former prostitutes; prostitute activists both for and against de-criminalization; feminist attorneys; feminist scholars; and some a combination. What I found most intriguing was the lay-out of the book's essays. She gives space to the liberal activist for decriminalization and follows with essays to consider how liberalism goes to far in its pursuit for alteration of systemic categories.
As a former prostitute now at Harvard Divinity School, incongruity must be examined not as contradictions but as new comprehensions overlooked. The essay by Tracy Quan on the renaming of the prostitute as 'sex worker' is a must read for anyone exploring the tensions between identity and political correctness. That Ms Spector began the list of essays with powerful testimony of prostitutes themselves, had the effect for me as a reader, of being mindful of their (our) suffering while attending to the essays of the high-brow scholars - the real voices were a backdrop for the overlay of intellectual interpretation - misconnections were often glaring.

I believe Ms Spector's goal of presenting the multiplicity of issues was achieved. All voice are heard.

Mitchell Breitwieser is Professor of English at the University of California-Berkeley. His current project is tentatively titled The Life and Times of Harry Lime: Personal and Historical Disappointment in Graham Greene's The Third Man.

Modern thought is defined by the independent use of the scenic imagination to create anthropological models of the origin of human institutions, beginning with the social contract scene in Hobbes's Leviathan that puts an end to the reciprocal violence of the state of nature. Eric Gans follows the work of the scenic imagination in selected writings of twenty thinkers including Locke, Rousseau, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Nietzsche, Durkheim, Boas, and Freud and concludes his book with a critical examination of contemporary writing on the origins of religion and language. In the process, he demonstrates that the originary hypothesis offers the most cohesive explanation of the origin and function of these fundamental institutions.

About the Author
Eric Gans has taught French literature and film at UCLA since 1969. Beginning with The Origin of Language (1981), Gans developed the concept of generative anthropology and has written four other books on the subject, including Signs of Paradox: Irony, Resentment, and Other Mimetic Structures (Stanford, 1997). He has also written books on Gustave Flaubert, Prosper Mérimée, and Alfred de Musset. Professor Gans is a Chevalier des Palmes académiques.

Nice overview

This book presents a very nice overview of the Civil Law Tradition for Common Law students and lawyers. I found it very useful at providing a foundation for understanding my course covering Civil Law in its various forms throughout the world.

The material is "general" rather than "specific," meaning the broad areas of criminal procedure, civil procedure, educational models, etc. are presented in a series of roughly 10-12 page chapters in this small paperback. The material appears to be based largely on previously published material. Often the material appeared to be from articles that appear in expanded form in Merryman's much larger and more comprehensive book -- The Civil Law Tradition: Europe, Latin America, and East Asia (Contemporary Legal Education Series)

Useful, clear, and interesting

This work, now in its third edition, is a useful primer for those who would like to understand the basics of the civil law tradition. Civil law systems are unfamiliar to most people who live and study in common law countries like the UK and US, but they're the predominant type of legal system in much of the world, so it's worth learning about them. Merryman's classic work gives a concise history of the development of civil law, which helps to explain some of its foundational principles and forms. He also explains how systems in this tradition generally operate today. An excellent and highly readable book.

An Excellent Primer

This book was my academic introduction to the civil law tradition, having purchased it on eBay after reading a handful of Amazon reviews. If there is anyone who is a layman with respect to law at the point at which this review was written, `tis me. This book has served as an excellent primer for my autodidactical path of learning in comparative legal history, and a good framework upon which to build a continuing course of study.

With a North American audience in mind, and with a subtextual prejudice favoring the common law tradition, Merryman provides a well-written and well-organized historical and fundamental summary of the civil law tradition as found in Europe and Latin America. In an easy to read and engaging manner, the author presents civil law from its origins in the "jus commune" of Justinian to its present manifestations in the codified national legal systems found in Latin America and Europe. Merryman moves between subjects such as comparative legal history and civil procedure with ease, and paints a general picture of the tradition of civil law so that the lay reader can more clearly understand the origin, meanings, and historical significance of such complex systems as the Napoleonic Codes.

In short, the author presents his subject with unparalleled ease and clarity for what is ostensibly a textbook. This was an enjoyable read and an excellent choice for a neophyte in the subject of law - civil, common, or otherwise.
