The reality of the Arab-Israeli balance now consists of two subordinate balances: Israel versus Syria and Israel versus the Palestinians. The book analyzes these two balances in detail and their impact on defense planning in each country and on the overall strategic risk to the region as a whole. It covers military developments in each of six states—Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine—and provides an analytical view with charts and tables of how the changing natures of the military and political threats faced by each is impacting its military force readiness and development. The book has the most comprehensive data on past, current, and future military force structure currently available, drawn from the widest range of sources. Responding to the most recent of events in the region, this book is the first to deal with the effects on the Arab-Israeli military balance of the strategic uncertainty created by the Iraqi insurgency and the Iranian nuclear program. It also studies how the Gaza pullout, the Syrian withdrawal from Lebanon, the changing political landscape in Israel, and the threat of nuclear proliferation are having impacts on the Egyptian-Israeli and Jordanian-Israeli peace accords and the prospects for a settlement between the Palestinians and Israelis. The roles of Hezbollah, Hamas, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad are analyzed in light of the changing political landscape in both Israel and Palestine. Given the role of Syria in the Palestinian-Israeli affairs, the book also explores the ways that internal instability in Lebanon could escalate into a regional conflict.

Review
"This is a valuable reference book for those interested in the Arab-Israeli conflict."—Middle East Studies Association Bulletin

"This book contains an exhaustive array of information and graphics on the quantities and types of weapons for ground, air, air defense, naval, and paramilitary forces as well as weapons of mass destruction capabilities in each of the actors at the core of the Arab-Israeli conflict. These actors are the nation-states of Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon, as well as the Palestinians. The comprehensive order-of-battle information is complemented by rich qualitative analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of military and security forces in combat. The book is an important reference work for graduate students, scholars, and practitioners who study Middle East security issues. It is especially recommended for libraries intent on maintaining important reference volumes for the Middle East. Highly recommended. Graduate students, faculty, and practitioners."—Choice

"Anthony Cordesman here does what he does best. In his latest of a long series of books on the Middle East, he evaluates the military forces of Israel and its surrounding Arab neighbors with particular emphasis on unconventional warfare, or what is now called asymmetric warfare, meaning war where one side mingles with the civilian population causing moral confusion to the enemy. His book consists of an overview along with a segment for each of the countries involved. His findings are what most of us have already surmised: that in a conventional army-to-army war, Israel will triumph. He gives us detailed proof as to why, and as we learn more about their armies, we get a better understanding of each of the countries....Mr. Cordesman simply reports the facts with masses of corroborating detail and leaves moral judgments to others. We need not ask for more."—The Washington Times

National Security and Immigration: Policy Development in the United States and Western Europe Since 1945, by Christopher Rudolph

Global terrorism has emerged as a central security issue throughout the world, and effective immigration and border control is now a necessary condition to maintain national security. National Security and Immigration identifies the security-related implications and determinants of immigration and border policies in the United States and Western Europe since 1945. The author shows how international migration presents the state with important choices that impact economic production and the accumulation of wealth, manpower resources, internal security, relations with other states, and national identity—the very fabric of our sense of social belonging. In contrast to the argument that policy is largely the product of domestic interest groups, this book reveals how immigration and border policies are shaped by the state's desire to maximize national security interests along three primary dimensions—defense, wealth, and stability.

Decisive Encounters: The Chinese Civil War, 1946-1950, by Odd Westad

The Chinese Civil War was one of the key conflicts of the twentieth century. The Communist victory determined Chinese history for several generations, and defined international relations in East Asia during the Cold War and after. Despite its importance and scope—its battles were the largest military engagements since World War II—until now remarkably little has been known about the war, and even less about its effects on the societies that suffered through it. This major new history of the Chinese Civil War attempts to answer two central questions: Why was the war fought? What were the immediate and the lasting results of the Communists’ victory?

Though the book highlights military matters, it also shows how campaigns were mounted alongside profound changes in politics, society, and culture—changes that ultimately contributed as much to the character of today’s China as did the major battles. By analyzing the war as an international conflict, the author explains why so much of the present legitimacy of the Beijing government derives from its successes during the late 1940s, and reveals how the antagonism between China and the United States was born.

A good primer but needs much more detail
By Truth be Told
Prof. Westad's book provides the reader with a solid overview of the tumultuous events that engulfed China in the wake of WWII and led to China becoming the world's most populous Communist country. Prof. Westad has an engaging writing style that keeps the reader's interest, unlike many of the works written by academics. He does a good job at introducing the reader to the salient political and military events that led to the eventual defeat of the Kuomintang (KMT or Nationalist Party) and does a good job at giving those new to the subject matter the necessary background to expand their studies. Unfortunately, the work lacks in several respects. First, the the book's maps are too few and provide little of the necessary detail for one to truly understand why the principal actors made the military decisions they did. Bluntly put, the maps should have included more topographical detail and there should have been more maps covering areas of fighting in smaller increments of time to permit one to truly follow the course of military events. Furthermore, in his introduction Prof. Westad states "the main emphasis (of the book) is on the political and military history of the war..." As a former Marine combat officer who later served as a diplomat in China, I found the book lacked in both respects. There was a good deal of coverage regarding the issues of CCP debate regarding its land reform policies and debates about those policies within the party. However, the book fails to provide as much information on what the KMT leadership's thoughts about this and other important socio-economic issues. In addition, there was only superficial discussion of the military forces, organization, weaponry, and almost no real attempt to provide a detailed chronology of the war's events, at the strategic, operational or tactical level. In spite of these criticisms, I strongly recommend the book at a good starting point for those who have little or no knowledge of what happened in China during these years as there are few works available in English that deal with the subject well.

Title is misleading
By E Hou
I was slightly disappointed after reading this book. The title gives an impression of military strategy on the battlefield level. This book offered very little of that. Most concepts, strategies, and thoughts were from the thirty thousand feet level. I was hoping for a book which outlined campaigns with battlefield maps, and greater descriptions of the eb and flow of the combat. Most battles were described in a paragraph or a two. That was very disappointing. The book did give good background information on why things happened, and the history of the conflict. But with a title of "Decisive Encounters" I was expecting more "decisive encounters".

Very Good Overview
By R. Albin
This is a clear, well organized, and concise overview of the Chinese Civil War. This is not a detailed narrative or military history. Readers looking for that type of book can consult the excellent bibliography of this book. Westad's aims are to cover the basic narrative and provide analysis of the major features of the Civil War. Westad does this very well.

Westad presents China emerging from WWII and the prolonged struggle against the Japanese as a profoundly damaged society. This was particularly true in those parts of Northern China that were the main battlegrounds in the fight against Japan. In this context, whoever could establish even moderately effective government would be able to dominate China. The Nationalist party (Guomindang - GMD)led by Jiang Jieshi (Chiang Kai-shek)had become the most powerful force in China in the interwar period but the success of the Japanese invaders greatly damaged the GMD. Nonetheless, in 1946, the GMD seemed likely to regain dominance of China. Jiang Jieshi was acknowledged internationally, including by the Soviets, as the leading figure in China, the GMD at least nominally controlled 80% of the country, and the GMD army had been well equipped by the Americans. In the initial battles of the Civil War, the GMD forces did well against the Red Army of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

A major theme of this book is the failure of the GMD to capitalize on its advantages. The initial pre-eminence of the GMD was also a source of weakness as any failures to establish effective governance undermined the legitimacy of the GMD. Westad makes clear the high level of corruption, numerous errors in governing, high level of intra-party competition, economic ingnorance, poor leadership, and general incompetence that characterized the GMD efforts to establish effective government. GMD failures led to considerable unrest in the cities and the countryside, providing opportunities for the CCP.

While the CCP started the war in an inferior position, it had certain advantages. It was a smaller and considerably cohesive movement, its leadership was clearly better, and despite problems due to inconsistencies in how vigorously to pursue radical reform in the countryside, CCP cadres generally proved more competent than their GMD counterparts. The CCP benefited also greatly from control of the most industrialized part of China, Manchuria, and significant assistance from the Soviets. Soviet support was clearly crucial, though its importance should not be overestimated as Stalin's China policy was rather cautious. Its clear from Westad's narrative, that the CCP leadership, specifically Mao were able to make the most of their advantages and exploit the huge shortcomings of the GMD. This is not the popular story of a peasant led guerilla uprising taking over China. Rather, this is the story of relatively conventional military success allowing establishment of reasonably competent government and leading to acceptance of CCP dominance of China. Military success in conventional warfare was crucial and the CCP appears to have had the outstanding commander of the war, Lin Biao.

Westad stresses the importance of the Civil War experience for subsequent events in China. Mao dominated the CCP at the outset of the Civil War, but the rapid success of the CCP (much quicker than anyone, including Mao, expected), sealed Mao's domination of the CCP. The militarization of the CCP, the emphasis of rapid mass efforts, the importance of "will," and use of Soviet models of government and political organization, were all accelerated by the Civil War. Westad is very good as well on the nature of politics and change in the countryside adn the cities. The complicated relationships between the GMD, the CCP and the various national minorities is also covered well.

While this book is very much a history of GMD failures, there is some irony when looking at the events of the Civil War and recent events. The GMD, notably Jiang, wanted a modernizing, nationalist state, in control of its own economy, restricting expression but still interacting with the greater world and markets. The state would be authoritarian but using democratic forms to boost legitimacy and a mass party to mobilize the party to support the regime. It appears that CCP domination of China was a painful way to achieve Jiang's goals.

The Culture and Commerce of Publishing in the 21st Century (Stanford Business Books), by Albert Greco, Clara Rodríguez, Robert Whar

Is publishing a cultural or commercial endeavor? Drawing on extensive data sets and applying the theoretical tools of both sociology and economics, The Culture and Commerce of Publishing in the 21st Century is the definitive social and economic analysis of the current state and future trends of the industry. This book examines the substantive issues, challenges, and problems confronting the diverse, and in many ways fragile, book publishing industry in the United States. The authors specifically emphasize the consumer, college textbook, and scholarly publishing components of the U.S. book publishing industry as they analyze the cultural and economic structure of the book publishing industry in the twenty-first century.

The book begins by charting the changes in the book publishing industry between 1945 and 2005, then goes on to examine industry specifics, strategies being employed for domestic and global competitiveness, and the economics of publishing and the impact of technology. Through in-person interviews and a broad sampling of people from every sector of the industry it examine the demographic trends in play. The temperature of the current publishing culture is presented in a chapter titled "I'm Glad I'm Not An Author . . ." The book ends by looking forward, highlighting the trends likely to impact the growth of the industry in the future.

Throughout the book, the tables provided track the industry from 1945 until 2005, and give the reader a snapshot of the data year-by-year, and category by category: bestsellers, average book prices, U.S. bookstore sales, average sales by category, and the demographic breakdown of readers. It also provides forecasts for the coming years, both units and revenues, for 2005-2009. The thoughtful analysis presented in this book will be valuable to leaders in publishing as well as the scholars and analysts who study this industry.

Review
"Publishing has always played a substantive role in the dissemination of information. Thanks to The Culture and Commerce of Publishing in the 21st Century, we finally have a valuable introduction to the U.S. book publishing industry in our contemporary times. Greco has a reputation for raising tough questions and then carefully analyzing an enormous amount of data to clearly answer those questions. This book will not disappoint; it's an impressive achievement, and even with my 30 years in the industry, I learned a great deal."—Tom Radko, Editor, Journal of Scholarly Publishing

"This book is a great resource for anyone trying to understand how the book industry works."—Jim Milliot, Director of Business and News, Publishers Weekly

"This thorough and engrossing book explains everything about the book business in a way that will satisfy "insiders" and "civilians" alike. Greco, Rodríguez, and Wharton explain how corporate takeovers, changing habits, and a "bottom-line" mentality have influenced the way we make books—and buy them. Comprehensive and full of facts, The Culture and Commerce of Publishing in the 21st Century examines the power of publishing, and does its math. Anybody who has ever bought a book should now buy this one."—Sara Nelson, Editor-in-Chief, Publishers Weekly

A Report on Mainstream Book Publishing
By John Matlock
This book purports to answer the question, 'Is publishing a cultural or commercial endeavor.' The answer, of course, is a simple, 'Yes.' To the large corporation owning a publishing company the answer is 'mostly commercial.' To a unversity press (this book is published by Stanford University Press), the answer is probably somewhere in the middle. This book, for instance, is not likely to make the best seller charts. To a church owned press, or a self-published book the answer is probably 'mostly cultural.'

This book concentrates mostly on the larger companies, the publishers whose names we all know. There isn't much from the World War II soldier that has just decided to publish his memoirs, or the church that has put it's significant books on the web for anyone to read.

The general feeling about the industry is not good. The percentage of readers in the country has gone down. The small book stores are having to find niches where Barnes & Noble and WalMart don't compete. And all of this is true.

Then there's Harry Potter, where even the announcement of the title of the next book gets announced on the evening network TV news. And there were 172,000 new books published in the US in 2005; 375,000 published in the English Speaking World. New technologies makes small print runs more profitable. Internet marketing is as of yet, an unknown. As this book says in it's final sentence, 'The game changed in the summer of 1995 when Jeff Bezos opened Amazon.com; we just do not know whether the game changed for better or worse.

This book is one view of the book publishing industry in America. Anyone with a position of responsibility in the business will ignore it at their peril.

Dying for God: Martyrdom and the Making of Christianity and Judaism (Figurae: Reading Medieval Culture), by Daniel Boyarin

Not long ago, everyone knew that Judaism came before Christianity. More recently, scholars have begun to recognize that the historical picture is quite a bit more complicated than that. In the Jewish world of the first century, many sects competed for the name of the true Israel and the true interpreter of the Torah—the Talmud itself speaks of seventy—and the form of Judaism that was to be the seedbed of what eventually became the Christian Church was but one of these many sects. Scholars have come to realize that we can and need to speak of a twin birth of Christianity and Judaism, not a genealogy in which one is parent to the other.

In this book, the author develops a revised understanding of the interactions between nascent Christianity and nascent Judaism in late antiquity, interpreting the two "new" religions as intensely and complexly intertwined throughout this period. Although the "officials" of the eventual winners in both communities—the Rabbis in Judaism and the orthodox leaders in Christianity—sought to deny it, until the end of late antiquity many people remained both Christians and Jews. This resulted, among other things, in much shared religious innovation that affected the respective orthodoxies as well.

Dying for God aims to establish this model as a realistic one through close and comparative readings of contemporary Christian texts and Talmudic narratives that thematize the connections and differences between Christians and Jews as these emerged around the issue of martyrdom. The author argues that, in the end, the developing discourse of martyrology involved the circulation and exchange of cultural and religious innovations between the two communities as they moved toward sharper self-definition.

Review
"Daniel Boyarin has done it again. With this book . . . he has again provoked, challenged, and enlightened us. With his usual clear, crisp, and sometimes sharp-edged writing, with his consistently critical engagement of ancient primary and modern and postmodern secondary interpretive texts and theories, Boyarin has forced us to think again and in some respects in radically different ways and on radically different terms about. . .the 'making' of Christianity and Judiasm."—Journal of the American Academy of Religion

"This is a rich, stimulating and compelling work. Boyarin's writing is complex and full fo irony and humor. . . . It is fascinating and, like a good drama, draws the reader in as if to solve a mystery. . . . Even those how are not in the field of ancient Judiasm . . . will find much of interest in this book."—Hebrew Studies

"This volume highlights new developments in understanding Christian and Jewish origins. It is intended to be the beginning of a new investigation of the religious histories of rabbinic Jews and Christians in late antiquity. It is, according to Boyarin, to be read more as a series of hypotheses than as a series of conclusions. Nevertheless it is a very exciting publication. . . . I find the central thesis compelling, even astonishing, but quite exhilirating. We are much indebted to someone who has the vision to see the past in ways most of us never fully envisaged."—Journal of Beliefs & Values

" . . . [This] book is especially worthwhile for anyone interested in the evolution of Christian and Jewish self-understanding in Late Antiquity."—Religious Studies Review

"Boyarin tells this story with grace and impressive erudition. Previously unnoticed connections are established that shed rich light on the developments under study. Boyarin has placed the separation of Judaism and Christianity into the historical context of real people attempting to understand themselves and one another, and the once-familiar story will never again look the same. He is to be congratulated for a valuable contribution."—The Jewish Quarterly Review
"Boyarin's exciting book has shown us that the parting of the ways between Christianity and Judaism never really occurred, at least not in the way scholars have imagined."—History of Religions

Fascinating thesis in need of support
By Joshua Edwards
As background, I am a MA student in Religions of Western Antiquity, and I read this book as part of a class exploring Rabbinic Judaism. In the main, I would agree with the opinions of the reviewer immediately below this, although I would more heavily emphasize the advanced nature of this work. I would say that you need to have at least some exposure to early Christian history and literature as well as Rabbinics before approaching this book, in order to get some meaning out of it. First, I would note that this book is, unfortunately, a collection of thematically related essays rather than a single exposition. In the first chapter, Boyarin argues that we cannot properly speak of "Judaism" and "Christianity," as such, for the first three centuries of the Common Era. He offers, in my opinion, some pretty marginal evidence, although highly interesting. In short, he asserts more than he can sustain. In the following, he employs various en vogue cultural theories to look at virginity and martyrdom in "Christian" and "Jewish" literature, and essentially argues that this genre of literature acts as a liminal space in which these nascent groups can work out their identities. While I found some of his modern feminist cultural theory a bit anachronistic for, say, 3rd century religious texts, on the whole his thesis is interesting, if not totally supportable. This book will get you thinking; he's definitely on to something.

Creating religious identities and institutions
By R. Lester
It is tempting to project the contemporary boundaries between Judaism and Christianity onto the first century BCE, but Dying for God clearly and convincingly explores the ways in which Judaism and Christianity were not discrete beliefs or practices not only during the life of Jesus but also for the generation after the death of Jesus . Not only was the line not clear between the two so-called sibling religions, each was forming a sense of identity out of a relationship with the other and the stories of martyrs is an especially telling tale of how such suffering and death was invoked and retold to shape communities understandings of themselves, the meaning of life and the meaning of death.

Promises to Keep: Technology, Law, and the Future of Entertainment (Stanford Law Books), by William Fisher III

During the past fifteen years, changes in technology have generated an extraordinary array of new ways in which music and movies can be produced and distributed. Both the creators and the consumers of entertainment products stand to benefit enormously from the new systems. Sadly, we have failed thus far to avail ourselves of these opportunities. Instead, much energy has been devoted to interpreting or changing legal rules in hopes of defending older business models against the threats posed by the new technologies. These efforts to plug the multiplying holes in the legal dikes are failing and the entertainment industry has fallen into crisis. This provocative book chronicles how we got into this mess and presents three alternative proposals—each involving a combination of legal reforms and new business models—for how we could get out of it.

Review
"Digital technologies have given society an extraordinary cultural potential. If that potential is to be made real, we must reconcile it with the legitimate and important claims of copyright. In this beautifully written and careful work, Fisher, more completely than anyone else, maps the choices that we might make. He argues for a choice that would produce enormous social good. And while not everyone will agree with the conclusions he draws, no one who cares seriously about creators or culture can ignore the framework that he has set. There are choices that we as a society must make. And as Rawls did in political theory, or Milton Friedman did in economics, Fisher provides an understanding that will color policy analysis for the generations to come."—Lawrence Lessig, Stanford Law School

"The strength of this book is Fisher's willingness to step above the political fray to solve problems. He has produced one of the most important books in media studies and law in some years. It is refreshing, bold, and provocative. We need it badly." —Siva Vaidhyanathan, Director of Communication Studies, Department of Culture and Communication, New York University

"This book provides the first comprehensive, accessible overview of the conflict surrounding music distribution and the emergence of digital communications networks, working towards a detailed proposal for how we could radically transform the way in which our society funds its music and film industries."—Yochai Benkler, Yale Law School

"Fisher's proposal might be the best thing that ever happened to the cultural commons: the creators would be paid, while every individual would have unlimited access to every cultural creation." —The New York Times (January 25, 2004)

"Harvard University Professor Terry Fisher has completed the first comprehensive examination of various alternative [compensation] models....Our thanks to Professor Fisher for his exhaustive research in making our choices clear."—The Register (February 1, 2004)
"Promises to Keep is an intelligent call for reform in the entertainment industry's intellectual property business. . . . For those not fortunate enough to have taken Fisher's class on intellectual property at Harvard, this book is the next best thing. Perhaps
better. Reading it is like joining him on an imaginary drive south along California's coastal highway from Silicon Valley to Hollywood. The destination is provocative, and the journey itself is spectacular and edifying."—Legal Times
"...Fisher adds an important dimension to the history of plea bargaining precisely because he looks at it with a prosecutor's eye."—Michigan Law Review
"Those who care about the future of the entertainment industry will find that time spent reading the book will be well-rewarded and—because it is so well-written—pleasurable, even if readers don't agree with the book's conclusions."—Entertainment Law Reporter
"The most interesting aspect of the book is that it brings to the surface the very practical side of the copyright issue involving business considerations in the solutions it proposes."—Law and Politics Book Review
“Fisher offers a unique perspective on a growing problem of how to capture the benefits of digital distribution while avoiding the inevitable legal implications that such dissemination ultimately raises.”—Columbia Journal of Law & the Arts

Children of Global Migration: Transnational Families and Gendered Woes, by Rhacel Parreñas

In the Philippines, a dramatic increase in labor migration has created a large population of transnational migrant families. Thousands of children now grow up apart from one or both parents, as the parents are forced to work outside the country in order to send their children to school, give them access to quality health care, or, in some cases, just provide them with enough food. While the issue of transnational families has already generated much interest, this book is the first to offer a close look at the lives of the children in these families.

Drawing on in-depth interviews with the family members left behind, the author examines two dimensions of the transnational family. First, she looks at the impact of distance on the intergenerational relationships, specifically from the children’s perspective. She then analyzes gender norms in these families, both their reifications and transgressions in transnational households. Acknowledging that geographical separation unavoidably strains family intimacy, Parreñas argues that the maintenance of traditional gender ideologies exacerbates and sometimes even creates the tensions that plague many Filipino migrant families.

Review
"In her earlier important work, Servants of Globalization, Rhacel Parreñas described the extraordinary migration of Filipinas to care jobs in the North. In this book she turns to the children left behind. Through superb interviewing, Parreñas uncovers the poignant story of absent mothers, present but unaccommodating fathers, kin helpers, and children haunted by the feeling of being left behind. These children are, Parrenas shows us, the 'fall guys' of a powerful global logic far beyond their control. This is a brilliant book we all should read."—Arlie Hochschild, co-editor with Barbara Ehrenreich of Global Woman: Nannies, Maids and Sex Workers in the New Economy and The Commercialization of Intimate Life

"With an ethnographer's ear and a social critic's lens, Rhacel Salazar
Parreñas illuminates the care deficit of the immigrant second generation, the children of transnational Filipino families left behind by mothers and
fathers who labor in the global economy. Her uncovering of the gender paradox—the intensification of the gender division of labor, of male providers and female nurturers, despite women's wage work—is nothing less than brilliant!"—Eileen Boris, Hull Professor of Women's Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara

"Rhacel Parreñas provides a much needed perspective on the lives of the families of overseas contract workers. Her interviews provide us with a suggestive look into the changing dynamics of gender roles and to the reformulation of patriarchal ideology among Filipino families broken up by the demands of globalization. This is a highly instructive and eminently useful work for considering the relations between the gendering of global
labor and the conservative reconstitution of gender norms in the nation-state."—Vicente L. Rafael, University of Washington

"This book greatly contributes to our understanding of the transnational family. It will raise general awareness about the all too frequently overlooked second generation in the policy regulation of immigration."—Pei-Chia Lan, National Taiwan University

"This book makes a novel and significant contribution by addressing the children left behind in labor migration. Parreñas provides a vivid account of the severe family dislocation experienced within transnational Filipino families, and elaborates a disturbing analysis of the linkages between the discipline of the IMF, the privatization of state services in the Philippines, and transnational coping strategies of middle class Filipino families. She raises profound ethical issues about the transfer of care work from global south to global north."—Geraldine Pratt, University of British Columbia
"Children of Global Migration is accessibly written and clearly argued, lending itself to a useful classroom text in undergraduate courses on family, gender, immigration, childhood, and/or ethnography. It is yet another significant work in Parreñas's growing corpus of transnational scholarship."—Canadian Journal of Sociology Online
"A fascinating study on the implications for families of large-scale temporary worker migration."—CHOICE

Finally a book that looks on children left behind!
By Sabine Weinert
This book gives insight into the lives of children who live in transnational households in the Philippines. It illustrates the child's perspective on international migration and trys to show what it means to be a child who is nurtured from parents that do not live in geographical proximity.

Central to Parrenas analysis is her focus on gender in this book. She shows how traditional gender and care expectations influence the experience of children in transnational households and the experiences of migrant mothers and fathers. The author argues that the traditional values of the mother as the 'light of the house' and the father as the 'pilar of the house' confront migrant parents with very different expectations that they need to fulfill in order to live up to their children's expectations. While the father is traditionally responsible for the economic well-being of his family, the mother is the nurturer of the family, her main task is to provide emotional security for her children. Thus, while fathers migrate to secure the financial well-being of the family and in doing so fulfill their traditional gender role, migrant mothers seem to violate their role. Mothers who migrate do not only have to provide material security to their children, but also have to continue to provide nurturing and emotional work from far away if they want their children to accept their migration.

The book is based on in depth interviews which Parrenas conducted with migrant 'children' (young adults, usually in college, i.e. around the age of 17-24) and their caretakers in the Philippines. The book would benefit from a truely anthropological perspective gained through participant observation as the question: do children really live as they say they live remains to be answered. Many children talk about their perspective on their parents' migration as they experienced when younger, or when their parents had left, however, we may not forget that perspectives change over time, thus the book does not provide true insight into the actual life experience of migration when it happens, or in the life of younger children. All that is presented here is retrospection and the experience of young adults whose parents live abroad. Not, as the title might let the reader assume, a children's perspective on migration.

However, considering the fact that the book is unique of its kind and work on children's experiences of migration is rare, the book is a good read for all those who want to learn about the experiences of children left behind.

Different POV

While taking an Introductory Sociology course, I read this book. I found Parrenas' insights into the gender roles and family structures of the Phillipines endlessly interesting. In fact, I would have enjoyed reading this book even if it wasn't required!

Also, Parrenas giftedly explained the globalization process, its dangers and inevitable outcome so eloquently and with such fervor that I am inclined to say that more people should read this book!

Bottom line: Great read whether required for class/course research or personal expansion!
