Surprise Heirs II: Illegitimacy, Inheritance Rights, and Public Power in the Formation of Imperial Brazil, 1822-1889, by Linda Lewin

Focusing on the inheritance rights of people born outside wedlock, this book explores the legal evolution of their rights as Brazil moved from colony to nation. It offers a unique counterpoint to the conventional political history of the Brazilian Empire, which ignores important legal change involving family and inheritance law. The book also provides a new and complementary approach to recent scholarship on the family in nineteenth-century Brazil by using that research as a starting point for examining illegitimacy, marriage, and concubinage from the neglected perspective of legal change.

The author’s exhaustive study of parliamentary debates reveals how the private sphere of the family acquired fundamental significance in the public discourse of Brazil’s imperial legislators. The concluding theme of the book treats the reactionary shift away from liberal reform, the result of the “scandal in the courtroom” that the reform generated.

Review
"Long after most of our books have been consigned to remote storage facilities or (worse yet) weeded, historians will continue to consult Lewin's invaluable Surprise Heirs volumes."—Hendrik Kraay, University of Calgary

"These two volumes [Surprise Heirs I and Surprise Heirs II] represent a major contribution to our understanding of how law relates to social realities, political agendas, and religious values. Moreover, Lewin's meticulously researched study is a sterling addition to a small but growing list of works that seriously address the social and economic effects of law in either the private or the public spheres."—Latin American Research Review

Communitas: The Origin and Destiny of Community (Cultural Memory in the Present), by Roberto Esposito

No theme has been more central to international philosophical debates than that of community: from American communitarianism to Habermas's ethic of communication to the French deconstruction of community in the work of Derrida and Nancy. Nevertheless, in none of these cases has the concept been examined from the perspective of community's original etymological meaning: cum munus. In Communitas: The Origin and Destiny of Community, Roberto Esposito does just that through an original counter-history of political philosophy that takes up not only readings of community by Hobbes, Rousseau, Kant, Heidegger and Bataille, but also by Hölderlin, Nietzsche, Canetti, Arendt, and Sartre. The result of his extraordinary conceptual and lexical analysis is a radical overturning of contemporary interpretations of community. Community isn't a property, nor is it a territory to be separated and defended against those who do not belong to it. Rather, it is a void, a debt, a gift to the other that also reminds us of our constitutive alterity with respect to ourselves.

Review
"Underlying [Esposito's] philosophical work is the idea that our political vocabulary is exhausted. Old political notions need not to be replaced by new ones, but through historical reflection it is important to trace what has remained unthought in those concepts . . . Esposito's reflections are most stimulating."—Walter Van Herck, Bijdragen, International Journal in Philosophy and Theology

"Those—especially English-speaking readers—familiar with Esposito's later research (and, in particular with Bios, Esposito [2008]) will find this work particularly valuable for laying out the ontological ground upon which his account of immunity and biopolitics was subsequently worked out."—Andrea Rossi, In-Spire Journal of Law, Politics, and Societies

"Esposito is an expansive thinker, unusually attuned to the historical as well as the philosophical dimensions of that hybrid field called 'political theory.' After a wondrous excursus on the problematic of 'community,' Esposito's challenging elaboration of community as alterity unfolds. This important and attractive translation brings to political theorists working in English Esposito's skill at speaking across the division between the analytic continental traditions." —Kirstie McClure, University of California, Los Angeles

"With Communitas, Esposito has made an enormous contribution to the cardinal and complex notion of community, taking issue with the essentializing view of community that remains inherent in the language of contemporary philosophy. The reader feels guided through debates of great complexity by a generous expert who knows not only the major arguments, but the minor caveats and inconsistencies as well." —Peter Connor, Columbia University

"With his usual erudition and philosophical precision, Roberto Esposito traces the development of the concept of community and its limits through the European tradition. His argument poses a challenge for anyone who wants to think community today."—Michael Hardt, Duke University

About the Author
Roberto Esposito teaches contemporary philosophy at the Italian Institute for the Human Sciences in Naples. His Bíos: Biopolitics and Philosophy (2008) has also been translated into English.

Telling Images: Chaucer and the Imagery of Narrative II, by V. A. Kolve

Telling Images investigates certain symbolic traditions in Geoffrey Chaucer's major poetry and their relationship to the visual culture of his time. With more than 150 illustrations, it continues an inquiry begun in the author's prize-winning study, Chaucer and the Imagery of Narrative: The First Five Canterbury Tales. Here, intensive readings of Troilus and Criseyde, The Legend of Good Women, and four more Canterbury Tales focus once again on imagery created by narrative itself—not on passing metaphors or similes, but on the images we create in our minds as we imagine the action of a story. Their suggestive likeness to images embedded in yet other texts, realized in illuminated manuscripts and other visual arts of the age, is shown to ground and enrich our reading of these poems.

Review
"Telling Images is the work of a master of the field, whose command of medieval iconography is profound and whose sense of Chaucer's poetry emerges from a lifetime dedicated to teaching his work."—Suzanne Conklin Akbari, Journal of British Studies

"[R]ichly illustrated and beautifully written . . . [M]edieval scholars of all stripes, especially those who teach and write about Chaucer, will surely want this book on their shelves to take down whenever they need an image to support a point or a fresh lesson in how to visualize memorable scenes in the work of Chaucer."—Nancy Mason Bradbury, Speculum

"[T]his collection of previously far-flung essays and its consolidation through substantial additional material amounts to a volume which every university library and every serious Chaucerian will want to acquire. Even those who are skeptical about Kolve's reliance on visual topoi will find here, once again, profound interpretations of Chaucer's writings that are to be reckoned with."—Alcuin Blamires, Journal of English and Germanic Philology

"V. A. Kolve has gained an international reputation as one of our most astute interpreters of the complex interchanges in the later 13th through early 16th century between verbal and visual artifacts. Chaucer and the Imagery of Narrative II has been long in coming, but even the earliest essays in it refresh and make green poetry one may have thought one knew only too well. And for beginning students, it will open the grand medieval treasure house once again."—Mary Carruthers, New York University, Modern Philology

"This collection aptly complements that earlier volume and offers new insights and perspectives on the analyses and scholarship it offered. Engaging and informative, this collection has much to offer to anyone interested in Chaucer or medieval literature and culture . . . Highly recommended."—C.S. Cox, Choice
"V. A. Kolve has been one of those scholars, a few of whom happily grace every generation, whose work has shifted the center of gravity of medieval literary study. Twenty-five years ago, Chaucer and the Imagery of Narrative revolutionized our sense of the possibilities of iconographic analysis as applied to the work of medieval England's greatest poet. Now these wide-ranging essays in Telling Images expand yet further his exciting investigations of the subtle commerce of word and image. And in this brilliant book, as in everything Kolve has written, the power of striking ideas is everywhere amplified by the power of an artful and responsible prose." —John Fleming, Professor Emeritus, Princeton University
"Kolve's work is highly individual and extremely difficult to model, marked by a deep thoughtfulness and a unique combination of daring and caution."—John M. Gamin, The Review of English Studies

About the Author
V.A. Kolve is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of English at UCLA. One of America's foremost Chaucer scholars, he is the co-editor of the Norton Critical Edition of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales (1989; Second Edition, 2005). He has served as President of the Medieval Academy of America, as President of the International New Chaucer Society, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Imagery as Crucial in Chaucerian Story-Telling.
By John McLaughlin
Apparently this volume is the second in a series of essays on Chaucer, but I admit I have not found the first volume. This one contains eight essays on Chaucer, three of them on non-Canrtervbury Tales topics, the rest thoughtful ruminations on aspects of the Canterbury Tales. Is it true that literature is about ways of seeing things -- not depicting action, but seeing objects or narrative points? The text -- and the immense number of images from medieval manuscripts -- would argue that imagery is as important as story-telling, and carries that claim forward vividly indeed. There are copious notes, and a full index to the text, and it would be a fine present for a young -- or not so young! -- medievalist on your gift-list this Christmas season, at their birthday, a graduation present -- any excuse would do.

Your Career Game: How Game Theory Can Help You Achieve Your Professional Goals, by Nathan Bennett, Stephen A. Miles

Your Career Game demonstrates how game theory can help readers to understand and proactively take charge of their career strategy. Authors Nathan Bennett and Stephen A. Miles teach readers to manage the interdependencies and interconnectedness among coworkers, managers, and others in a manner that supports personal career efforts. Then, they show how readers can become better players. The key to learning how to play the career game is "career agility"—in short, nimble individuals are better game players.

Thois book includes conversations with a wide range of successful professionals such as Ursula Burns (Xerox), Stephen Elop (Microsoft), Marius Kloppers (BHP Billiton), Ken Frazier (Merck), and Liz McCartney (The St. Bernard Project), and discusses how their career moves demonstrate elements of a game theory approach to career management. This is a must-read strategic guide for anyone who seeks to advance their career and navigate today's job market.

Career Management
By KBPAQ
This is a great book. I have always struggled with moving from where I think I want my career to go and how to actually get there. I have done the "parachute" thing and read other books on career management but this book really helped me understand how to move things from theory to action. Not only did it help build the base I need to understand game theory, which we all play everyday without even knowing it, it provided the tools to apply the concepts to managing my career. There is a section on how to best leave a position as well. This is something I have tried to do well but I see now that I can do it better, which will help my reputation and legacy and the organization from which I departed; all important things for me. I also liked how the book explains it's not what one talks about in interviews with respect to 'critical success factors' or 'knowledge, skills, and abilities' but rather the employ of these skills to their greatest benefit for my career plan. For me the interviews used in the book to illustrate points bring things from theory to practice. I understand what worked and what did not work when these enormously successful people played their games and can employ that information as I play mine. Lastly, as a manager and game player, I have and will continue to compete and work with people from all walks of life and generations. The insights offered about the younger generations and how they approach the game will help me better strategize their moves as a player. As a manger, I will have a better understanding of the way these generations approach their careers and work. I highly recommend this book.

Finally - realistic advice for your career!
By T. Griffin
As someone who has searched for many jobs (within and outside of my original industry), and made various moves - this book finally addresses what it takes to get ahead and how to address the challenges of the "competitive landscape"! We typically only think about getting the job and then naturally getting promoted through good work, and don't think about what other factors we need to be considering (such as the mentoring relationships we need to be developing and how to get noticed in your role to get ahead#. Even better, the book contains extensive interviews from a diverse array of successful executives whose own careers are not only educational, but inspiring. As we see a new generation enter the workforce in one of the most challenging economies the world has seen #as well as see individuals have to restart their careers in a new industry), this book is also a tool for getting to that next step. This book changes how you think about your career - it's no longer a simple game of checkers, it's a game of chess and you have to be strategic to get ahead!

Using Game Theory on your Career
By John Matlock
This is one of those books that you need to read and then re-read every year or two. It doesn’t have a great deal of surprises in it, but it encourages to step back a little from your present job and think longer term, to think of your present job and just one part of a career. You will probably change jobs several times, perhaps with different companies, perhaps just as you advance in one company. The basic tenant of the book is to use game theory to help you achieve what you want. Game theory is a fairly recent development in the analysis of business. It offers some new ways of thinking and viewing the world.

What you’ll find here is good solid tips about how to succeed, how to evaluate where you are and where you want to go. You need to re-read it every so often to remind yourself of the points you forgot since the last reading.

Securing Privacy in the Internet AgeFrom Brand: Stanford Law Books

The Internet Age has created vast and ubiquitous databases of personal information in universities, corporations, government agencies, and doctors' offices. Every week, stories of databases being compromised appear in the news. Yet, despite the fact that lost laptops and insecure computer servers jeopardize our privacy, privacy and security are typically considered in isolation. Advocates of privacy have sought to protect individuals from snooping corporations, while advocates of security have sought to protect corporations from snooping individuals.

Securing Privacy in the Internet Age aims to merge the discussion of these two goals. The book brings together many of the world's leading academics, litigators, and public policy advocates to work towards enhancing privacy and security. While the traditional adversary of privacy advocates has been the government, in what they see as the role of the Orwellian Big Brother, the principal focus of this book is the fraternity of Little Brothers—the corporations and individuals who seek to profit from gathering personal information about others.

"Clearly, this is a book that moves among many interesting and even compelling topics on the important issues of privacy and security. The richness of this book is its incorporation of a variety of perspectives, including copious footnotes for every chapter. It is thought-provoking and interesting and would serve to introduce the novice on this issue to many aspects of privacy and security."—Law and Politics Book Review

"Although much has been written on privacy and security as they relate, separately, to information and to information technology, this anthology is the first extended treatment of the two factors combined, with articles by top legal scholars in both fields. Securing Privacy in the Internet Age is an important book."—Helen Nissenbaum, New York University

An Ethics of Dissensus: Postmodernity, Feminism, and the Politics of Radical Democracy, by Ewa Ziarek

What kind of challenge does sexual and racial difference pose for postmodern ethics? What is the relation between ethical obligation and feminist interpretations of embodiment, passion, and eros? How can we negotiate between ethical responsibility for the Other and democratic struggles against domination, injustice, and inequality, on the one hand, and internal conflicts within the subject, on the other? What are the implications of postmodern ethics for the agonistic politics of radical democracy?

We cannot address such questions, Ziarek argues, without putting into dialogue discourses that have hitherto been segregated: postmodern ethics, feminism, race theory, and the idea of radical democracy. Addressing a constellation of diverse thinkers—including Emmanuel Levinas, Patricia Williams, Jean-François Lyotard, Michel Foucault, Frantz Fanon, Julia Kristeva, and Luce Irigaray—the author proposes a new conception of ethics, an ethics of dissensus that rethinks the relation between freedom and obligation in a double context of embodiment and antagonism.

As the unavoidable yet productive dissonance among antagonism, freedom, and obligation suggests, the ethics of dissensus seeks not to transcend politics but to articulate the difficult role of responsibility and freedom in democratic struggles against racist and sexist oppression. Opposing the conservative political work of privatized moral discourse that reduces social antagonism to the apolitical experience of good and evil, the ethics of dissensus calls into question not only the depoliticized subject of ethics but also the disembodied notions of citizenship, rights, and democratic community.

Review
"Ziarek has produced one of the most sensitive, thoughtful, original, and quietly provocative texts I know in the broad areas of contemporary philosophy and sexual and racial politics. . . . Trained in comparative literature and literary studies, she is equally at home in the most difficult and contentious of philosophical texts."—Elizabeth Grosz, State University of New York, Buffalo

"Original, carefully argued, and beautifully written, this book is one of the first sustained attempts to think through the relationship between feminist ethics and feminist politics. Ziarek's nuanced readings of central figures in current debates in postmodern ethics provide not only new ways of interpreting their work but also new directions for ethical theory."—Kelly Oliver, SUNY-Stony Brook

Saint Paul: The Foundation of Universalism (Cultural Memory in the Present), by Alain Badiou

In this bold and provocative work, French philosopher Alain Badiou proposes a startling reinterpretation of St. Paul. For Badiou, Paul is neither the venerable saint embalmed by Christian tradition, nor the venomous priest execrated by philosophers like Nietzsche: he is instead a profoundly original and still revolutionary thinker whose invention of Christianity weaves truth and subjectivity together in a way that continues to be relevant for us today.

In this work, Badiou argues that Paul delineates a new figure of the subject: the bearer of a universal truth that simultaneously shatters the strictures of Judaic Law and the conventions of the Greek Logos. Badiou shows that the Pauline figure of the subject still harbors a genuinely revolutionary potential today: the subject is that which refuses to submit to the order of the world as we know it and struggles for a new one instead.

Review
"Badiou introduces the reader to the notion that philosophy stands somewhere beyond the commonplace . . . [and] illustrates the way in which during [St. Paul's] time Paul decided that for God particularities such as nationality or sex are unimportant and therefore everybody is (compared to God) just a human being."—Peter Takac, Human Affairs: Postdisciplinary Humanities & Social Sciences

Enter Badiou
By Lost Lacanian
This fantastic little book is one of Badiou's best. The US was first introduced to Badiou with his book "Ethics"--and I believe it would benefit any reader to go to that book first before reading "Saint Paul." But for those who are aware of Badiou's overall project, this book will provide fascinating reading. Here, Badiou goes into why he thinks Universality is an important and indispencible concept for politics. He goes into how Global Capitalism has thrived off fractures and splinters in identity, and how constructing a universal community is necessary for any struggle against capitalism. He also goes into a detailed analysis of the subject through the figure of Saint Paul. If you are looking for an actual commentary on Saint Paul, then, this is not the book for you. If you already dislike, or do not understand what Badiou's is trying to accomplish, then, this book will do little for you. But, if you are truly intrigued by this philosopher, and if you are quite aware of his prose and dependence upon set theory and mathematical concepts, then, Saint Paul will be of great interest to you.

Truth and Testimony
By Neckar
This book provides a very novel insight not only on Paul but on Christian theology as well. One of the most interesting reflections is the differentiation between the philosophical discourse of wisdom (Greece), the prophetic discourse of signs (Israel) and the testimony of the event (Christianity). There is no pagan conformism to the laws of the universe nor a cryptic awaiting for a promise, but an event that concerns us all in terms of placing ourselves in a place beyond the automatism of the Law, in a world of Life. The main figure is not of the prophet or the philosopher but of the apostol, the one who testifies of a universal truth where there is no difference between I and the Other. Badiou's interpretation of Saint Paul does not compromise itself with received scholastic theology where there is a continuity of God with Being (analogia entis) nor with a postmodern theology where the promise is something to be kept differing forever in order to "do justice" to the Other.

Badiou provides a universalist theory that includes the difference but where there is no difference and boundaries for the sake of the ethical. No Jew nor Greek, no men nor women, to be all to all men.

A Philosophical Laicization of Paul
By Tron Honto
Badiou's extended essay on Paul may be a bit amateurish and crude from a theological and/or historical perspective [his intents and aims, he admits, are solely subjective], but despite this, it achieves a noteworthy amount of novel philosophical insight using the texts of Paul as a launchpad.
There are two sides to this book. On one hand, Badiou appears as a sort of atheist apologist for Paul, whom he seeks to clear of common insults against his person popular since Nietzsche and others (such as being a mysoginist, a despiser of earthly life, etc.) Badiou wants us to view Paul not in the popularized polemic distortion that pervades atheists in academia but rather as the prototypical 'poet-thinker of the event'.
On the other hand, in so far as one can say this of Paul, Badiou wants to extract from his portrayal a revolutionary philosophy of 'the event' and its founding of universiality. Here, the argument becomes complexly interwined with the words of Paul and Christian discourse; however, it brings with it a certain uncanny lucidity as the revolutionary universiality of the Resurrection in Paul's discourse sets the scene to disolve and overcome the particularities of the Judaic and Greek status quo.

Civil War High Commands, by John Eicher, David Eicher

Based on nearly five decades of research, this magisterial work is a biographical register and analysis of the people who most directly influenced the course of the Civil War, its high commanders. Numbering 3,396, they include the presidents and their cabinet members, state governors, general officers of the Union and Confederate armies (regular, provisional, volunteers, and militia), and admirals and commodores of the two navies. Civil War High Commands will become a cornerstone reference work on these personalities and the meaning of their commands, and on the Civil War itself.

Errors of fact and interpretation concerning the high commanders are legion in the Civil War literature, in reference works as well as in narrative accounts. The present work brings together for the first time in one volume the most reliable facts available, drawn from more than 1,000 sources and including the most recent research. The biographical entries include complete names, birthplaces, important relatives, education, vocations, publications, military grades, wartime assignments, wounds, captures, exchanges, paroles, honors, and place of death and interment.

In addition to its main component, the biographies, the volume also includes a number of essays, tables, and synopses designed to clarify previously obscure matters such as the definition of grades and ranks; the difference between commissions in regular, provisional, volunteer, and militia services; the chronology of military laws and executive decisions before, during, and after the war; and the geographical breakdown of command structures. The book is illustrated with 84 new diagrams of all the insignias used throughout the war and with 129 portraits of the most important high commanders.

From Library Journal
Though the literature documenting Civil War military leaders is extensive, a one-volume reference that provides comprehensive biographical and background information on the thousands of leaders and complex military structure of the Union and the Confederacy would be a welcome addition to many libraries. Here, John H. Eicher (chemistry, emeritus, Miami Univ. of Ohio) and David J. Eicher (managing editor, Astronomy magazine; Mystic Chords of Memory) have combined brief biographical entries on over 3000 Union and Confederate military commanders with extensive background information. Even libraries that own Ezra J. Warner's Generals in Blue (1964) and Generals in Grey (1959) or William C. Davis's more recent The Confederate General (National Historical Society, 1991) will find this a useful reference source. Recommended for larger public, academic, and specialized Civil War collections. Theresa McDevitt, Indiana Univ. of Pennsylvania Lib.

Review
"Here is the reference work that Civil War historians have been waiting for. All arguments and confusion about full vs. brevet rank, seniority, jurisdiction, and dozens of other matters concerning military commanders and civilian officials in the Union and Confederacy are cleared up in this volume, which would have been as useful to Civil War contemporaries, if it had existed then, as it will be to modern students of the war."—James M. McPherson, Professor of History, Princeton University, and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era

"It is difficult to imagine the staggering amount of research that must have gone into the creation of this highly valuable reference work. All students of the military side of the Civil War, and especially those interested in the organizational structures and leading figures of the Union and Confederate high commands, should keep this volume near at hand."—Gary W. Gallagher, Nau Professor of History, University of Virginia

"Civil War High Commands is a bibliophile's tour de force and a Civil War aficionado's dream. It combines in a single volume concise biographical information on nearly 4,000 of the war's movers and shakers, be they politicians, soldiers, or sailors. But that is not all. The authors include invaluable data that is necessary to an understanding of the mid-19th century military, its command structure, and mystique."—Edwin C. Bearss, Historian Emeritus, National Park Service

"The Eichers have devoted years to assembling their fascinating array of facts. . . . Rarely is a sound and practical reference book so much fun to use."—from the foreword by John Y. Simon, editor of The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant

"This important new work is a welcome addition to the field of Civil War literature, and will without a doubt become the standard tool for research in questions related to high command in the Union and Confederate militaries and governments. . . . This book is highly recommended for every library that treats the Civil War in any respect. It should also be considered for the private libraries of Civil War buffs."—American Reference Books Annual
"Besides being a truly handy reference work, the Eichers' book is simply great fun to peruse, but beware: looking up one tidbit may lead you to browse and read for a very long time."—The Journal of Southern History
"...it is an enormously valuable reference guide to the command structure of both sides during the Civil War."—The NYMAS Review

A feast of details and information
By James W. Durney
In the forward, John Y. Simon, states this is not "a book to curl up with on a cold winter night" or a book that you would "take to the beach". He is correct, this is not a book that you will sit down and read, unless you normally read baseball encyclopedias. This book is a feast of facts, statistics and information relating to the American Civil War.

How many men did New York supply when Lincoln asked for 75,000 men in 1861? There is a multiple page table with the answer, by state by levy for the USA and CSA. When was Ebenezer Dumont born? What is his military record? When did he die and where is he buried? If you are still reading, you may want to consider buying this book.

The first hundred pages is information about the nation, political structure and the military forces. This is followed by 600 pages of biographies of general and flag offices and "Might-Have-Beens'. The answers to the questions on Ebenezer Dumont are in this section. The next 100 pages, details grades and rank for general and flag level officers. This section has tables with date of rank, nomination, confirmation and termination for each. A second table lists all these officers by grade by date of rank. Need to know who was the CSA's senior Brigadier General in 1865? After finding that answer, go back to the biographies to see what he did during the war. The next hundred pages cover the command structure for both sides. Departments were vital during the war. Commanders in one department constantly looked to other departments for support. More often than not, the other department commander was busy with his own problems. This section will allow you to check the department history, next time you try to understand why J.E. Johnston could not get Forrest to attack Sherman's supply lines in 1864. Ending the book is about seventy pages of important dates, a good bibliography and a name index. Package all this information on a large format nicely bound book and you have a feast for detail people.

People whose knowledge of the war, I respect, say the information is accurate. I know this is a very hansom book, well presented that is great fun for the serious student of the American Civil War. If you qualify as a "serious student" and a "detail person", this is a book you should enjoy.

A Masterpiece
By Allan Kempe
A major work of awesome proportions! The research, attention to detail and the scholarship that combined to produce this work are beyond measure.
For any serious Civil War buff this book is a "must". There is no area relating to the High Command of either North or South that is not covered in exquisite detail. It contains not only the biographical notes for virtually every major and minor character on both sides, it lists the ranks, date of rank and assignments. Reads like an Officer's Personnel Record, complete with photographs of individuals where available. It is particularly useful in bringing into clear focus the organizational structure, badges of rank and the different departments making up the respective armies.
This is an absolutely invaluable tool for anyone interested in an in-depth source for reference to go hand-in-hand with careful study of the major works on Civil War battles and campaigns.
It should certainly be found on the shelves of any college or university library.

Awesome!
By Kenneth McCanliss
The best single-volume reference on Civil War personnel ever! Period.

However, for the sake of completeness, two small factual errors should be noted. On page 771, in the list of retired Commodores, the name of Charles W. Pickering should be included, and on page 786, in the list of active duty Commodores, John S. Chauncey should be omitted. Chauncey retired as a Captain on December 21, 1861, and was promoted to Commodore on the retired list on April 4, 1867 (his date of retirement as shown on pp. 770 & 786 are probably typographical errors).

I highly recommend this work, and find it to be easily worth twice it's asking reail price.

My thanks to the authors for providing this indispensable reference tool to the research community.
