American Images of China, 1931-1949, by T. Jespersen

In the 1930's and 1940's, the prevalent American view of China was that of a friendly, democratic, and increasingly Christian state, in many ways akin to the United States. This view was fostered by a wide range of literary, political, and business leaders, including Pearl S. Buck, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Wendell Willkie, Joseph Stillwell, Claire Chennault, and most notably, the powerful publisher of Life and Time, Henry R. Luce.

This book shows how the notion of the Chinese as aspiring Americans helped shape American opinions and policies toward Asia for almost twenty years. This notion derived less from the reality of Chinese historical or cultural similarities than from a projection of American values and culture; in the American view, fueled by various political, economic, and religious interests, China was less a geographical entity than a symbol of American hopes and fears. One of the more important consequences was the idealization of China and the demonization of Japan.

Time Magazine and China
By Smallchief
Henry Luce, publisher of Time, Life, and Fortune magazines was the son of a China missionary and he used his special expertise and prejudices to influence American attitudes and policy toward China. Americans have long had an affinity for China that they do not, for example, have for India or Japan. The author demonstrates that American attitudes toward China were often mistaken, idealizing Generalisimo and Madame Chiang -- good-solid Methodists and with a Golden Retriever at their feet as they sat companionably on a Western couch. China, the author maintains, was an extension of the Western frontier in the eyes of the missionaries and a country ripe for Americanization and Christianity. Truth had difficulty breaking through.

Well, this is pretty well-plowed ground and American misconceptions of foreign countries have been pretty common. Whatever the mistakes of Luce and others in looking at China through rosy glasses they were not as far off base as those who extolled the virtues of the Soviet Union and Stalin during these same years.

The author does a good job making his point but this is a book of a type: academic, over-priced, 200 pages long, and well-researched and documented with extensive footnotes and a good bibliography. Why can't the many books of this type -- with limited sales potential -- simply be published on the web and be available to everyone free? It's not as if the author is going to lose a fortune in royalties. This book ranks around number two million on the Amazon list of best sellers.

Mergers and Acquisitions: Managing Culture and Human Resources (Stanford Business Books (Hardcover))From Brand: Stanford University Pres

In mergers and acquisitions (M&A), special emphasis is usually placed on the strategic and financial goals of the deal, while the psychological, cultural, and human resource implications do not receive as much attention. This book examines the dynamics of the sociocultural processes inherent in M&A and “fleshes out” their implications for postmerger integration management.

The book’s contributors come from a variety of subdisciplines within the field of management, and thus provide new insights into the managerial, social, and cultural processes inherent in M&A. Executives with extensive experience managing M&A have offered commentaries at the end of the chapters, providing “real-world” perspective to empirical and theoretical insights.

Review
"[T]he book makes an informed contribution to our seemingly never-ending quest to find the holy grail of M&A..."—Administrative Science Quarterly

"Most mergers and acquisitions fail to deliver on their promise, and the reason—more often than not—comes down to problems of a lack of integration and cultural fit. This book provides a wealth of insights into the human side of the integration process: where it goes wrong, and what firms can do to manage it better." —Julian Birkinshaw, London Business School

"As someone who has studied M&A for over 20 years and who has advised on over 100 corporate combinations, I am impressed with the comprehensiveness of this collection. It reflects contemporary thinking and action on the factors that matter most in eventual merger and acquisition success—the human and cultural dynamics. And, it also poses ideas for the next wave of research and interventions in making mergers and acquisitions work. Researchers, executives, and consultants all will find value in this volume of well written and intelligently structured contributions. It is particularly helpful for those engaged in or studying international combinations." —Mitchell Lee Marks, Ph.D., President, JoiningForces.org, Author, Joining Forces: Making One Plus One Equal Three in Mergers, Acquisitions and Alliances

Mergers and Acquisitions; managing cultural and human resources
By Michael Minns
This is a scholarly work that is probably the seminal piece on the value and importance of post merger cultural integration
It is particularly useful as it reviews M&A's in the English and Non- English speaking world.Such as; Samsung(Korea),Seimens,(Germany),GlaxoSmithKline (USA and UK)or academics such as; IngarBjorkman Professorof Management Swedish School of Economics(Finland),Paul Evens Proffeessor Human Resources and Organisational Development INSEAD(France and Singapore). The Co-Editor Stahl is also from INSEAD.
It confirms my own research on M&As which reveals that 80% of them fail to deliver the pre-merger promise and that 90% of the target company's people leave within 2 years of the event.
It is presented in a unique fashion, each paper is reviewed by a subject matter expert.
However the presentation could be enhanced if there was at the beginning of each paper or review a biography of the author/s
so that their respective experiences could be guaged.

Don't let this stop you from buying as it really worth while.

We, the Japanese People: World War II and the Origins of the Japanese Constitution (2 Volume Set), by Dale Hellegers

This is the definitive story of how the United States attempted to turn Japan into a democratic and peace-loving nation by drafting a new constitution for its former enemy—and then pretending that the Japanese had written it. Based on scores of interviews with participants in the process, as well as exhaustive research in Japanese and American records, the book explores in vivid detail the thinking and intentions behind the drafting of the constitution.

Confusion and strife marked planning for the democratization of Japan, first in Washington, then in occupied Tokyo. Policy makers in the State, War, and Navy departments, the Joint Chiefs, and the White House contended bitterly over how to devise an “unconditional surrender” that would minimize Allied casualties while according the victor supreme authority over a soundly defeated Japan. By war’s end, there were still no firm guidelines on a host of crucial issues, including how the Japanese system of government could be made acceptably democratic.

The first months of occupation were chaotic, with General MacArthur organizing his staff around loyal followers and edging out experts sent from Washington. Hampered by a narrow interpretation of the terms of surrender and wishful thinking about Japanese compliance with American expectations, MacArthur set in motion a fiasco. Because of a translator’s error, Prince Konoye, three-time Prime Minister of Japan, thought MacArthur had entrusted him with revising the Japanese constitution and assembled a staff of constitutional law experts and set to work. However, conservatives in the Japanese cabinet denounced his efforts and produced their own version, which MacArthur found unacceptable.

MacArthur then secretly instructed his staff, with its very limited knowledge of either Japan or constitutional law, to draft a new Japanese constitution, which amazingly they did in a week’s time. Expecting approval of its own draft, the Japanese cabinet was stunned when presented with a completely different American document. So unrelenting was the pressure exerted by MacArthur’s officers that it was clear to members of the cabinet they had no choice but to adopt the American draft more or less intact, and publish it as their own.

Because of the broad range of its meticulous research, the book will be a standard reference not only for students of Japanese history but also for legal scholars, diplomatic historians, and political scientists.

A Politics of the Scene, by Paul Kottman

Juxtaposing readings of three plays of William Shakespeare and two major treatises in political philosophy—Plato's Republic and Thomas Hobbes's Leviathan—Kottman contests the figural ground from which political philosophy emerges and suggests how a Shakespearean sense of the 'scene' might open up new avenues for thinking about politics. A Politics of the Scene builds especially on the reflections of Hannah Arendt and offers a speculative approach to politics that abandons taxonomical and scientific ambitions in order to finally reckon with the world as a stage.

Review
"A Politics of the Scene is a closely argued but beautifully written book about the centrality of drama for the discourse of political philosophy. The claims of the latter, Kottman argues convincingly, have their origins in the metaphor of the stage, even while they seek to deny its significance. This book contests what Kottman calls the 'figural ground' from which political theory emerges in the West and attempts to replace that theory with a new category for thinking about political life today: the scene."
—Jon Snyder, University of California, Santa Barbara

"The brilliance and originality of this book consist specifically in its radical recasting of the metaphorical, figural use of 'theater' and 'drama.' 'Theory' and 'theater,' Kottman reminds us, come from the same etymological root. This splendid book should considerably interest both theorists and those attracted to the immediacy, particularity, and relationality of the theatrical experience." —Robert Henke, Washington University

The Shape of Revelation: Aesthetics and Modern Jewish Thought (Stanford Studies in Jewish History and C), by Zachary Braiterman

The Shape of Revelation explores the overlap between revelation and aesthetic form from the perspective of Judaism. It does so by setting the Jewish philosophy of Martin Buber and Franz Rosenzweig alongside its immediate visual environment in the aesthetics of early German modernism, most notably alongside "the spiritual in art" as it appears in the art and art theories of Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, and Franz Marc. The modern shape of revelation—and "the spiritual in art" that emerges from this conversation—builds upon a vocabulary of form-creation, sheer presence, lyric pathos, rhythmic repetition, open spatial dynamism, and erotic pulse that was unique to Germany in the first quarter of the twentieth century. This study works to identify and critically assess the sensual root that is brought to bear upon the modern image of revelation and "the spiritual in art."

Review
"This material is fascinating and largely unnoticed by recent interpreters of modern Jewish thought... The book is about beauty and itself is beautiful."—Newsletter of the Central Conference of American Rabbis

"In his new book, [Braiterman] brilliantly traces the parallels between modern Jewish religious thought as epitomized by Martin Buber and Franz Rosenzweig, and contemporaneous trends in visual art as exemplified by Kandinsky, Klee, and Franz Marc... In short, an impressive achievement."—Jewish Book World

"This learned and challenging academic study offers a poetic, timely call for shifting the Jewish communal focus from policies based on corporate strategy toward a debate on Jewish mission and meaning, in which text, tradition, and modernity combine."—Ha'aretz

"Braiterman has created a fascinating, brilliant, and valuable new reading of Buber and Rosenzweig by reinserting the two Jewish thinkers into their context in German culture. He shows their work has profound confluences and parallels with that culture, especially with modernist painters such as Klee and Kandinksy. With The Shape of Revelation, Jewish thought regains the specific aesthetics of German modernism, and modernist aesthetics regains its theological/spiritual dimension."—Robert Gibbs, University of Toronto

The Politics of Exclusion: The Failure of Race-Neutral Policies in Urban America, by Leland Saito

Contrasting views of race and society make for heated debate in the United States. From the perspective of assimilation, society operates in a fair, open, and meritocratic fashion. Racial discrimination, while not completely eliminated, arguably has little impact on people's life chances. In contrast, research examining the social construction of race has emphasized continued discrimination. Race remains embedded in social, political, and economic institutions, contributing to systemic racism. The Politics of Exclusion examines how these debates about race—and the proper role of government in addressing issues of race—shape public policy.

Investigating three case studies, that involve economic redevelopment, historic preservation, and redistricting in San Diego, New York, and Los Angeles, Saito illustrates the enduring presence of racial considerations and inequality in public policy. Individuals and groups who may sincerely characterize themselves as free of racial prejudice still participate, though perhaps unwittingly, in practices that have racialized outcomes.

Review
"Leland Saito offers an informative and critical analysis . . . Beyond policy outcomes, Saito's research affirms the value of community activism to build momentum and capital that limits negative effects on historical and contemporary representation of these groups . . . [T]his is a worthy piece of scholarship, advancing the argument for the continued consideration of the racial and ethnic implications of public policy."—Robin Lauermann, Journal of American Ethnic History

"The ever savvy Leland Saito does a thorough and creative job of analyzing the complexities of racial politics in U.S. cities, revealing major weaknesses in the diversionary "colorblind" notions of conservative apologists for urban racism. Given the importance of racism, ethnic conflicts, cycles of immigration, and urban redevelopment today, this compelling look at how important cities are dealing with dramatic social change will likely find an eager popular and scholarly audience."—Joe Feagin, Texas A&M University, author of Systemic Racism: A Theory of Oppression

"The ideology of colorblindness exhorts us to "get beyond" race and governs current institutional policies and practices. In a forceful critique, The Politics of Exclusion compellingly illustrates how supposedly "race-neutral" policies are deeply embedded in structural forms of racial inequality, and how such policies can promote racialized outcomes despite the best intentions of key social actors. Saito aptly describes a contemporary paradox—the simultaneous absence of racial prejudice and the enduring persistence of racial disparities."—Michael Omi, University of California, Berkeley

"In this informative and incisive comparison of neighborhood preservation projects and political redistricting struggles, Saito delivers a convincing and compelling argument about the enduring persistence of race, calling into question the effectiveness of race-neutral policies and documenting why racial equality continues to elude our nation." —Linda Trinh Võ, University of California, Irvine and author of Mobilizing an Asian American Community

"Saito uses compelling case studies from Los Angeles, New York, and San Diego to show how race and ethnicity continue to organize urban America, in ways that are shaped by local conditions. Once again, this work reflects Saito's extensive experience in community fieldwork, and it builds on his highly respected Race and Politics."—Edward J.W. Park, Loyola Marymount University
"The author . . . delivers a well-written, convincingly argued thesis on exclusion."—E. Smith, Choice

Lied to about how many were in stock
By Brett
The book was in good, as for the delivery however, be very careful. This happened to me on 2 different books. As for this one, I was told there were 3 books remaining and to order soon. I ordered it then and there because I needed the book as soon as possible and I was to receive my book in 1-3 business days. After not receiving my book for over a week and my deadline was approaching where I would need it for my research paper, I looked on amazon to see when it was supposed to be delivered and it had NOT EVEN SHIPPED YET. I would not have ordered the book if I would not have been lied to about how many were in stock. BE CAREFUL, if you need this book (or any book for that matter) in less than a couple weeks, do not order if you are told there are 6 or less remaining because the same thing may happen to you.

P. A. Stolypin: The Search for Stability in Late Imperial Russia, by Abraham Ascher

This is the first comprehensive biography in any language of Russia’s leading statesman in the period following the Revolution of 1905. Prime Minister and Minister of Internal Affairs from 1906 to 1911 (when he was assassinated), P. A. Stolypin aroused deep passions among his contemporaries as well as subsequent historians.

In the twilight of Nicholas II’s reign he was virtually the only man who seemed to have a clear notion of how to reform the socioeconomic and political system of the empire. His efforts in that direction—in agriculture, local administration, religious freedom, social legislation, the legal system—were radically new departures for the Russian state. His detractors disdained him as a power-hungry, coldhearted politician who was unscrupulous in pursuing his own career and would use any means to restore the tsarist autocracy following the frightening turbulence of 1905. Stolypin’s admirers, however, argued that he was a man of vision who pursued policies that would have transformed the country into a modern state with social and political institutions comparable to those of the West.

Lenin’s celebrated denunciation of Stolypin as “hangman-in-chief” set the tone for official Soviet work on his career. In the West, some historians and émigré writers, most notably Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, erred in the opposite direction. By contrast, this book—on the basis of extensive Russian archival documentation only recently available to historians—seeks to provide a balanced portrait of Stolypin that encompasses the complex, even divergent, impulses that motivated him.

Although Stolypin did not shrink from the use of force to stamp out unrest, he lamented the shedding of blood and much preferred nonviolent means to curb the opposition. In foreign affairs, he was uncompromising in his insistence that Russia should avoid entanglements that could lead to military conflict. To be sure, he was deeply committed to monarchical rule, but he did not consider it advisable to abolish the elected legislature or to deprive it of its authority. Stolypin’s program, a blend of reformism, authoritarianism, and nationalism, was more likely than any other to lead Russia toward social and political stability. But Tsar Nicholas II, his entourage, and ultra-conservatives could not bring themselves to yield a portion of their privileges and prerogatives in return for a reduced, though still significant, role in a changed Russia. They succeeded in undermining the Prime Minister’s attempts at fundamental reform and thus scuttled Imperial Russia’s last such attempt before its demise.

Review
"In a major speech last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin referred to Stolypin in laudatory terms, . . . presumably a signal of Mr. Putin's own intended balancing act between reformer and authoritarian tough-guy. With Mr. Ascher's highly readable biography, we're all better placed to understand the legacy that Mr. Putin inherits. . . . A book well worth waiting for. . . . P. A. Stolypin is carefully researched, well argued, and highly readable."—Wall Street Journal

"The first major biography of Petr Arkadevich Stolypin, prime minister and minister of internal affairs of the Russian Empire from 1906 unitl his assassination in 1911. This is a major contribution to our understanding of these important years following the 1905 revolution and will be welcomed by all students of the period."—History

"This book makes a significant contribution to our understanding of Stolypin . . . more than any previous work, it examines thoroughly and in detail the major episodes of Stolypin's political career. Ascher's treatment of these controversial issues is invariably careful, judicious, and illuminating. . . . Ascher has plumbed archives not just in Russia, but in Helsinkin, Bonn, and Vienna and in a wealth of documentation goes far beyond previous studies. . . . There will always be a place for thoroughly researched, carefully thought-through, and well written narrative history. Abraham Ascher's Stolypin is a fine example of this genre and is required reading for any serious study of Russian history."—Theodore R. Weeks, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale

"[A] definitive account of Stolypin's achievements and shortcomings."—European History

"His work may well set off a new trend in the scholarly investigation of prerevolutionary Russia."—American Historical Review
"Ascher's masterful account gives the prime minister the credit that he deserves, but it also creates the sad image of a well-intentioned reformer who was the victim of his devotion to the monarchy (so inadequately embodied in Nicholas II), of his own uncompromising nature, and of his readiness to use illegal means to implement reforms."—The Journal of Interdisciplinary History
"...this elegantly argued and well-written book throws new light on a controversial figure...and deserves the wider audience that a paperback edition would make possible."—David A.J. Macey, Middlebury College

From the Inside Flap

From the Back Cover
"In a major speech last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin referred to Stolypin in laudatory terms, . . . presumably a signal of Mr. Putin's own intended balancing act between reformer and authoritarian tough-guy. With Mr. Ascher's highly readable biography, we're all better placed to understand the legacy that Mr. Putin inherits. . . . A book well worth waiting for. . . . P. A. Stolypin is carefully researched, well argued, and highly readable."—Wall Street Journal
“The first major biography of Petr Arkadevich Stolypin, prime minister and minister of internal affairs of the Russian Empire from 1906 unitl his assassination in 1911. This is a major contribution to our understanding of these important years following the 1905 revolution and will be welcomed by all students of the period.”—History

Review
"This work examines the unique position of lawyers committed both to profession and to cause. The wide variety of social movements described in the book offers a natural setting for asking how politically committed collective clients shape the lawyer's role and the tension this poses for professional responsibility."—Richard Abel, UCLA School of Law

"Cause Lawyers and Social Movements presents a rich range of case studies of the interaction between lawyering and social movement."—Lucie White, Harvard Law School

"Together with their previous collaborative works on cause lawyers, Austin Sarat and Stuart Scheingold have taught us a great deal about the utility of lawyers and legal rights for social and political change, usefully highlighted the political significance of studying the practices of public interest lawyers in a politics of rights, and helped set an agenda for exciting and politically relevant research."—The Law and Politics Book Review

Inspiration for lawyers with vision
By Orlaith
Once upon a time in the seventies, social justice movements 'found' lawyers. Nowadays, lawyers are more likely to need to go out and find those movements. This pithy history of the pivotal role lawyers have played in advancing progressive causes offers a timely reminder to todays' bar school grads to stretch their vision of what the law can do. More than a medium for corporations seeking their profitable edge, the values enshrined in the legal system are the very lifeblood of civic cohesion. While Sarat & Scheingold's tone can verge on the dry, the wealth of case studies here form a living history capable of inspiring good works.

In the Time of Oil: Piety, Memory, and Social Life in an Omani Town, by Mandana Limbert

Before the discovery of oil in the late 1960s, Oman was one of the poorest countries in the world, with only six kilometers of paved roads and one hospital. By the late 1970s, all that had changed as Oman used its new oil wealth to build a modern infrastructure. In the Time of Oil describes how people in Bahla, an oasis town in the interior of Oman, experienced this dramatic transformation following the discovery of oil, and how they now grapple with the prospect of this resource's future depletion.

Focusing on shifting structures of governance and new forms of sociality as well as on the changes brought by mass schooling, piped water, and the fracturing of close ties with East Africa, Mandana Limbert shows how personal memories and local histories produce divergent notions about proper social conduct, piety, and gendered religiosity. With close attention to the subtleties of everyday life and the details of archival documents, poetry, and local histories, Limbert provides a rich historical ethnography of oil development, piety, and social life on the Arabian Peninsula.

Review
"This is a timely and important book that highlights the power of ethnography to engage questions that cut across scale and national boundaries. Bringing to the center notions of mobility and belonging that exceed national frames, it adds to an emergent field of scholarship on the Indian Ocean, the Arabian Peninsula, and other fluid transregional spaces."—Jatin Dua, Arab Studies Journal Reviews

"A thoroughly refreshing exploration of a Gulf community's experiences of the sudden changes that come with the discovery of oil, and its uncertainties about the future, given the knowledge the wells will one day run dry. Limbert skillfully shows how everyday understandings of an affluent present—what may be a dream time—rely on diverging conceptions of the past. Beautifully written and cogently argued, In the Time of Oil presents an insightful analysis of the impact of oil on the form and content of social relations."—Beth Baron, CUNY Graduate Center, Editor of the International Journal of Middle East Studies

"In the Time of Oil is compelling ethnography. Mandana Limbert offers unusual insights into contemporary Arabian Peninsula society. She engages current thought on how memory and identity are forged and maintained in an era when both younger women and men have been 'schooled' by the state. This is an exemplary book for a region in which such books are few and far between."—Dale F. Eickelman, Dartmouth College

"Instead of beginning with gender segregation, veiling, honor, and modesty, Limbert considers how women's sociality must be understood in terms of political economy and transformations of modernity in Oman. This book is innovative, deeply interesting, and fascinating to read. I highly recommend it for graduate and undergraduate students as well as all anthropologists and historians of the Middle East."—Anne Meneley, Trent University
