John Bender is Jean G. and Morris M. Doyle Professor in Interdisciplinary Studies at Stanford University and a former Director of the Stanford Humanities Center (2001-2008). He is the author of Spenser and Literary Pictorialism and the prizewinning Imagining the Penitentiary: Fiction and the Architecture of Mind in Eighteenth-Century England. Michael Marrinan is Professor of Art History in the Department of Art & Art History at Stanford University. His writings include Romantic Paris: Histories of a Cultural Landscape 1800–1850 (Stanford 2009) and Painting Politics for Louis-Philippe: Art and Ideology in Orléanist France, 1830–1848.

I love this book--as someone who studies race/ethnicity, immigration, and global dynamics, it's the kind of book I've always been looking for but could never find. The author shows how immigrant groups in the US aren't simply stereotyped or treated in certain ways because of what happens within, but because of what has happened between the US and the immigrants' sending countries. The book also shows that immigrants don't come as blank slates about race relations in this country but, precisely because of US power abroad, they learn much about it through the US military, global media, and ties with those across borders. I also really enjoyed the 2nd half of the book, which focuses on how these global, transnational dynamics I mention shape immigrants' views and behaviors about their own group and others in US society! I highly recommend!

Life-changing! Beautifully written!

I am an Asia/Asian American Studies major and, I have to say, I have never read a book like this before. I have always wanted to understand more about Korea and other Asian sending countries and especially how it connects to the Asian American experience here in the US, but most works that we read in class deal only with the Asian country or within the boundaries of the US. This book connects both through a historical, transnational, and a racial triangulation analysis. It allows us to grasp why my and my friends' families talk about race and culture so differently and why stereotypes of Asians are imposed on Asian Americans. This book even talks about pop culture, even Asian hip hop! It shows how race and racism are communicated and understood across the countries, and how not. This book changed my life and my perspective on my and other APAs' experiences. I think that the negative review is really biased. Sounds like he or she has an agenda -- how can anyone discount an entire research study without providing any of their own DATA?

They thus provide rich data for an empirical probe into the dynamics of organizational history.

This study uses qualitative and quantitative data from the history of a specific organization, Stanford University, to develop speculations about the ways in which written rules change. It contributes both to a theory of rules and to theories of organizational decision-making, change, and learning. Organizations respond to problems and react to internal or external pressures by focusing attention on existing and potential rules. The creation, modification, or elimination of a rule, then, is a response to events in the outside environment (such as new government regulations) or to events within the organization (such as alterations in internal government structures).

The authors elaborate a simple set of ideas about written rules and their dynamics, emphasizing the interplay among periodic major shocks to the system from outside, experiences with individual rules as they age and are revised, and the spread of effects through an interconnected set of rules. It is a story in which changes introduced in one part of a rule system create adjustments in other parts, including the same rule later in time, as the consequences of the changes are experienced and as rule-making attention is mobilized, satiated, and redirected. These processes involve the full panoply of political negotiation, symbolic competition, discussion, and problem solving that are typical of organizational decision making.

Through the first three quarters of the nineteenth century, judges showed far less enthusiasm for plea bargaining than did prosecutors. After all, plea bargaining did not assure judges “victory”; judges did not suffer under the workload that prosecutors faced; and judges had principled objections to dickering for justice and to sharing sentencing authority with prosecutors. In A Question of Tradition, Kathryn Hellerstein explores the roles that women poets played in forming a modern Yiddish literary tradition. Women who wrote in Yiddish go largely unrecognized outside a rapidly diminishing Yiddish readership. Even in the heyday of Yiddish literature, they were regarded as marginal. But for over four centuries, women wrote and published Yiddish poems that addressed the crises of Jewish history—from the plague to the Holocaust—as well as the challenges and pleasures of daily life: prayer, art, friendship, nature, family, and love. Through close readings and translations of poems of eighteen writers, Hellerstein argues for a new perspective on a tradition of women Yiddish poets. Framed by a consideration of Ezra Korman's 1928 anthology of women poets, Hellerstein develops a discussion of poetry that extends from the sixteenth century through the twentieth, from early modern Prague and Krakow to high modernist Warsaw, New York, and California. The poems range from early conventional devotions, such as a printer's preface and verse prayers, to experimental, transgressive lyrics that confront a modern ambivalence toward Judaism. In an integrated study of literary and cultural history, Hellerstein shows the immensely important contribution made by women poets to Jewish literary tradition.

About the Author
Gi-Wook Shin is Director of the Asia-Pacific Research Center, Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for International Studies, and Associate Professor of Sociology at Stanford University. He is the author/editor of numerous books and articles including Contentious Kwangju (2004), Colonial Modernity in Korea (1999), and Peasant Protest and Social Change in Colonial Korea (1996).

Very solid study of Korean nationalism

Very solid overview of Korean nationalism. The first half of the book argues that the development of a strong sense of ethnic nationalism in Korea was not inevitable, but rather a product of the historical interplay of competing ideologies (pan-Asianism, International Socialism, etc). The second half looks at a number of more particular issues (education, agrarianism, minjung, etc). The first half was outstanding - tight, persuasive and interesting. The second half was a bit more rambling, but at times quite interesting. A good place to start learning about Korean nationalism, though I imagine it would be easier going if you had some grounding in 20th century Korean history.
