Marxism, Fascism, and Totalitarianism: Chapters in the Intellectual History of Radicalism, by A. James Gregor

This work traces the changes in classical Marxism (the Marxism of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels) that took place after the death of its founders. It outlines the variants that appeared around the turn of the twentieth century—one of which was to be of influence among the followers of Adolf Hitler, another of which was to shape the ideology of Benito Mussolini, and still another of which provided the doctrinal rationale for V. I. Lenin's Bolshevism and Joseph Stalin's communism. This account differs from many others by rejecting a traditional left/right distinction—a distinction that makes it difficult to understand how totalitarian political institutions could arise out of presumably diametrically opposed political ideologies. Marxism, Fascism, and Totalitarianism thus helps to explain the common features of "left-wing" and "right-wing" regimes in the twentieth century.

Review
"A. James Gregor's life-long determination to clarify the origins and nature of Italian fascism seriously undermines the current common misconception that this ideology of trumpets and drums was little more than a thoughtless and opportunistic cover for violence and war. His well substantiated case study behoves historians both to consider Italy as more than a sideshow to Germany's National Socialism and to evaluate the consequences of scientific socialism as even more deadly than previously thought."—Terry Crowley, Canadian Journal of History

"Gregor provacatively argues that not only Leninism but also facism finds substantial inspiration in Marxism.... The sweep of Gregor's study is impressive, engaging with primary texts of not only the major thinkers but more minor figures as well . . . Recommended."—J. John, CHOICE

"The intellectual significance of this book is enormous. It deals with all major political-ideological currents and historical developments of the past century . . . It helps us to understand—indeed, to get to the bottom of—the origins and characteristics of twentieth-century revolutionary movements and ideologies." —Paul Hollander, Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard

"This is an outstanding study of the Marxian sources of Fascism as a specific ideological corpus and 'fascism' as a modern totalitarian regime type . . . The scholarship is indeed of high excellence, the work of a mature scholar whose long experience and penetrating grasp of his subject shines through."—Carl A. Linden, George Washington University

a wonderful piece of scholarship!
By John Aiello
This latest publication by A.James Gregor really summarizes a life of inspiring scholarship in radical ideology. Gregor gleans all his previous themes in fascism, socialism and national socialism. His chapter on Sorel alone privileges the books cost. I took all of Gregor's classes at UC Berkeley and cannot do justice to the depth of his brillance, his charisma, and his writing ability. You will learn more from this book than you would ever believe. I promise you!

Clarifying the Marxist roots of fascism and totalitarianism
By applewood
Published in 2009 this book represents a summary of almost five decades of thought, research and teaching on fascism by Prof Gregor. It isn't always easy reading (his academic style is sometimes densely packed, and well, academic) but it makes for a fascinating and authoritative history (and I enjoyed it more than his similar The Faces of Janus: Marxism and Fascism in the Twentieth Century). The main point Gregor makes is that the terms fascism and totalitarianism have been defined by the Marxists, always in an effort to make them seem to be inherent to the capitalist system of their enemies. The meaning of "fascism" especially is obscured and deeply colored by World War 2 - when the Soviets were Axis allies and fought against the fascist, and defined their post-war form of communism as essentially "anti-fascist". In other words, fascism popularly came to mean all that is reactionary and anti-revolutionary - from right wing dictators to racist soccer hoodlums. But fascism originally was conceived of and understood to be an anti-capitalistic statist movement - a pragmatic national-socialist "third way" application of early 20th century Marxist revolutionary spirit.

One of the strongest impressions I got from this book is how crazy Marx and Engels were (reasoning a bit like the brilliant yet twisted Mad-Hatter in one of Alice's adventures down under), and that the desire for change (violently via revolution!) was obviously widespread in 19th century Europe (and 20th century Asia, Africa and the Americas...), so that their inherent flaw in reasoning (that the external world and socio-political institutions are the only places real lasting change can and need happen - i.e. materialism) was never seriously questioned by both the masses and their elite leaders - until it was shown through trial and error just how terribly wrong-headed it had been from the start.

What I like most in all this is how Gregor frees up the rigid old ideas (left-right paradigm), so we can see them more objectively (and holistically). Yet to refute the Marxist views he by necessity has to communicate with their terms and so mostly stays inside their narrow intellectual box, and so doesn't explain how the Marxists were basically confused to not understand Capitalism as an economic system, and Imperialism, Marxism and Communism as primarily political systems - and so really not on the same playing field (and thus not in direct competition - while the fascist and communist WERE competing for the same political turf). Thus we have the unthinkable reality (to Marx and Engels no doubt) that today's China is simultaneously the world's largest capitalist AND communist nation.

It is refreshing that almost 100 years later (in large part due to the obvious failure of 20th century communism), the whole subject is open for redefinition. No longer is the political spectrum defined as the Marxist's wanted to see it both before and after WW2 (Marxism as a good on the left, and Fascism as an evil on the right). More and more, inquiring minds are seeing it as a multi-dimentional spectrum, and if having to be expressed on a linear axis, more accurately as the far left being the ideology of a totalitarian rule of one, and the far right being the anarchic rule of none; or more succinctly the left as being the realm of tyranny and the right of liberty.

This book helps clarify why such a reassessment is happening now, by tracing in detail the developments of classical Marxism which morphed around the turn of the 20th century from a common root into the competing ideologies of Hitler's Nazism and Mussolini's Fascism on one side, and Lenin's Bolshevism and Stalin's communism on the other. Gregor's approach is concerned with the actual historical expression of this diverse Marxist inspired revolutionary spirit, and so presents a more nuanced understanding of the political spectrum that attempts to transcend simplistic and easily stereotyped ideas, with the goal of helping humanity avoid a repeat of the horrific mistakes of the 20th century.

Turns Popular - but False - Notions on Their Heads
By erick
A very good, in-depth study (with references to sources for further analysis) which clearly points out the common ancestry between Fascism (along with Nazism - National Socialism) and Marxism. For far too long, Fascism has been equated as being a polar opposite of Marxist philosophy, which is not when studied properly without bias. This book does a great job pointing out the fallacies of popular misconceptions and what I call 'political myths' (i.e. "Fascism was capitalist" - simply not true b/c Fascists supported economic central-planning and were staunchly opposed to free-markets).

Anyone with a taste of objective, historical and political study, especially upon this subject, should read this book.

A Pueblo Divided: Business, Property, and Community in Papantla, Mexico, by Emilio Kourí

A Pueblo Divided tells the story of the violent privatization of communal land in Papantla, a Mexican Indian village transformed by the fast growth of vanilla production and exports in the late nineteenth century. The demise of communal landholding, long identified as one of the leading causes of the Revolution of 1910, is one of the grand motifs of Mexico's modern history. It is also, surprisingly, one of the least researched. This is the first study of the process of village land privatization in Mexico. It describes how a complex interplay of commercial, political, demographic, fiscal, and legal pressures led to social strife, rebellion, and finally parcelization. Disproving long-held assumptions that indigenous villagers were passive participants in the process, the author shows that they actually played a crucial role in the subdivision of communal property. Papantla's story is at odds with prevailing stereotypes of pueblo history, and thus points to the need for a broad reexamination of the causes, process, and consequences of rural social change in pre-revolutionary Mexico.

Review
"This excellent study nicely contextualizes these socioeconomic transformations in Papantla, both historically and geographically. The research is exhaustive and detailed, yet the book is well written and clearly argued... Importantly, it rises above the too-often simplistic dichotomy of entrepreneurs and government officials versus victimized Indians."—Hispanic American Historical Review

"It is no small achievement for any historian to be able to say something new about this important period of Mexican history. Emilio Kour's achievement in A Pueblo Divided is far greater than that. He has been able to contribute decisively to resolving one of the most controversial and debated issues for that period. Kour paints such a vivid picture of the life of the villagers, and above all of the uprisings, that it will be a pleasure to read even for people who are not primarily concerned with this subject. This book constitutes a brilliant work and a major breakthrough in the history of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Mexico."—Friedrich Katz, The University of Chicago

"Based on a mass of evidence, clearly structured and argued, A Pueblo Divided offers a lively and informative analysis of Papantla's vanilla boom and its many repercussions. This is an impressive and original study of an important topic, hitherto rather poorly understood, now, thanks to Kour and his indefatigable research, made accessible to students of Mexican History. It fills a significant gap."—Alan Knight, St. Antony's College, Oxford

"A Pueblo Divided rethinks the history of Mexico during the nineteenth century from the perspective of one community. Its great innovation is to see evolving divisions and integrations within indigenous Papantla in the context of both the production of vanilla for a developing Atlantic export economy and the consolidation of the 'liberal' state via land privatizations and political interventions. Detailing the political and economic complexities of Papantla in Atlantic and Mexican national contexts simultaneously, Kour offers a model history."—John Tutino, Georgetown University

"This is economic and business history at its best, committed not only to rigorous probing of the explanatory power of external factors like world commodity markets, but also to exposing and exploring the places where those factors lose their power to explain."—Journal of Interdisciplinary History
"Terrific—wonderfully researched, thoroughly original, and beautifully written. It may be the best book ever written on agrarian protest in Mexico; it will certainly transform the field."—John Coatsworth, Columbia University
"This book is a landmark in Mexican rural history."—The Americas

The Permanent Tax Revolt: How the Property Tax Transformed American Politics, by Isaac Martin

Tax cuts are such a pervasive feature of the American political landscape that the political establishment rarely questions them. Since 2001, Congress has abolished the tax on inherited wealth and passed a major income tax cut every year, including two of the three largest income tax cuts in American history despite a long drawn-out war and massive budget deficits. The Permanent Tax Revolt traces the origins of this anti-tax campaign to the 1970s, in particular, to the influence of grassroots tax rebellions as homeowners across the United States rallied to protest their local property taxes.

Isaac William Martin advances the provocative new argument that the property tax revolt was not a conservative backlash against big government, but instead a defensive movement for government protection from the market. The tax privilege that the tax rebels were defending was in fact one of the largest government social programs in the postwar era.

While the movement to defend homeowners' tax breaks drew much of its inspiration—and many of its early leaders—from the progressive movement for welfare rights, politicians on both sides of the aisle quickly learned that supporting big tax cuts was good politics. In time, American political institutions and the strategic choices made by the protesters ultimately channeled the movement toward the kind of tax relief favored by the political right, with dramatic consequences for American politics today.

Review
"Isaac William Martin offers an important and insightful addition to this research strand, presenting a powerful mix of social policy assessment, social movement analysis, political science, and economic sociology. ...Martin's book is recommended reading to all interested in the linkages between social policy, social movements, and taxation."—Rafael Marques, American Journal of Sociology

In a welcome break with market fundamentalism, this lively, well-written, and insightful book casts much-needed new light on debates about tax politics, the welfare state, and contemporary social movements."—Chris Rhomberg, Yale University

The movement that eroded the American (re)public
By Greggor Mattson
This book is as good as it gets (for an academic book, not an insignificant caveat). In clear accessible prose, Martin dissects the property tax and its unlikely adoption by conservative politics in the United States. Before you snore, there are a lot of interesting stories behind this story: that the property tax is one of the oldest taxes in North America, the tax privilege that 1970s tax revolutionaries were fighting for was the largest governmental social program ever, and how it was good government practices, not corruption, that caused the backlash against the property tax. Ultimately, the tax revolts changed the way the US pays for its public investments--especially education--and made taxes the third-rail of modern politics. Any serious citizen would be well served by Martin's patient historical vision that overturns much conventional wisdom.

Tax protest as social movement for protection from markets
By Peter B. Brownell
If you are interested in understanding the politics of taxation, you must read this important book. Martin calls into question many commonly-held beliefs about both the causes and effects of tax cuts, and in particular California's Proposition 13. Looking backward we tend to understand proposals to cut taxes as an expression of distrust in government and a belief that unregulated markets produce better outcomes. Martin shows that property tax protest resulted from professionalization of property tax assessment, which ended informal tax breaks that many homeowners had come to expect. These changes happened in California (and many other states) at a time when the real estate market was booming. The result was that property taxes increased quickly as market values rose. Martin shows that initial resistance to rising property taxes came from both the right and the left, although the proposed solutions differed. Martin portrays this response as a sort of Polyanian second movement (without explicitly invoking Karl Polyani's The Great Transformation), that is, a movement for government intervention to protect people from the excesses of the free market. The book traces the transformation of tax protest from a broad-based social movement into a partisan issue championed by the Republican Party and from a response to particular economic circumstances to a one-size-fits-all permanent part of the G.O.P. platform. Martin's analysis is based on careful empirical research, using a variety of methods (quantitative, archival, comparative) to answer the book's key questions. For an academic book on a topic that tends toward the technical, the prose is clear and approachable.

The Politics of Aesthetics: Nationalism, Gender, Romanticism (Cultural Memory in the Present), by Marc Redfield

This book suggests that modern cultural and critical institutions have persistently associated questions of aesthetics and politics with literature, theory, technics, and Romanticism. Its first section examines aesthetic nationalism and the figure of the body, focusing on writings by Benedict Anderson, J. G. Fichte, and Matthew Arnold, and arguing that uneasy acts of aestheticization (of media technology) and abjection (of the maternal body) undergird the production of the national body as “imagined community.” Subsequent chapters on Paul de Man, Friedrich Schlegel, and Percy Shelley explore the career of the gendered body in the aesthetic tradition and the relationship among aesthetics, technics, politics, and figurative language. The author accounts for the hysteria that has characterized media representations of theory, explains why and how Romanticism has remained a locus of extravagant political hopes and anxieties, and, in a sequence of close readings, uncovers the “anaesthetic” condition of possibility of the politics of aesthetics.

Review
"This is a remarkable book of penetrating intelligence. Through a series of deft readings, Redfield shows us how the aesthetic is always entangled in lines of forces beyond art proper. He charts expertly how this works in key texts of the Romantic period, all the while demonstrating powerfully that what we call Romanticism is by no means simply a thing of the past."
—Ian Balfour, York University

"Redfield's indispensible book casts new and important light on what impedes modernity in the region of the aesthetic, and, by its brilliant example, demonstrates what comes of responding to that occlusion with an ethics of reading."—Studies in Romanticism

"Readers of the book can expect insightful and interesting readings of de Man, philosophical
aesthetics, and romantic texts. Redfield's account of de Man's theory is both a lucid
explanation and spirited advocacy. Redfield's deconstructive account of the aesthetic, in
particular his discussions of form, is an intriguing reminder of the tension between the ends
of aesthetic effects and their means, linguistic in the case of literature." —European Romantic Review

Bush v. Gore brought to the public's attention the significance of election law and the United States Supreme Court's role in structuring the rules that govern how campaigns and elections function in America. In this book, Brian K. Pinaire examines one expanding domain within this larger legal context: freedom of speech in the political process, or, what he terms, electoral speech law.

Specifically, Pinaire examines the Court's evolving conceptions of free speech in the electoral process and then traces the consequences of various debates and determinations from the post-World War II era to the present. In his analysis of the broad range of cases from this period, supplemented by four recent case study investigations, Pinaire explores competing visions of electoral expression in the marketplace of ideas, various methods for analyzing speech dilemmas, the multiple influences that shape the justices' notions of both the potential for and privileged status of electoral communication, and the ultimate implications of these Court rulings for American democracy.

Review
"In The Constitution of Electoral Speech Law, Brian Pinaire provides a thorough and insightful dissection of the Supreme Court's now commonplace forays into the electoral process. ...Pinaire has provided a rigorous and sophisticated piece of work that is a valuable addition both to our understanding of electoral speech law as well as the making of constitutional law generally."—David K. Ryden, American Review of Politics

"This book offers an important analysis of the conceptions and rhetorical modes used by justices to frame and decide cases involving electoral speech. In doing so, the author demonstrates control of the literature on election law, democratic theory, and the process of Supreme Court decision making."—Perspectives on Politics

"Pinaire's volume is a worthy read for those interested in legal development...Few other volumes are devoted to an understanding of how the Supreme Court blends disparate lines of legal thought. It is a welcome addition to the literature." —Law and Politics Book Review

"Pinaire has addressed in depth the elements and episodes that comprises the rules and regulations governing electoral speech law in the US...This is an exceptionally fine analytical treatise covering the intersection of policy and law in the area of electoral free speech."—CHOICE

"I know of no other work that adopts the analytical framework advanced by Pinaire; nor do I know of any other work that so carefully joins together the scholarly traditions regarding the legal regulation of speech, on the one hand, and the legal regulation of the electoral process, on the other." —Timothy V. Kaufman-Osborn, Whitman College
"Pinaire provides the first comprehensive analysis of the Supreme Court's 'electoral speech' decisions, deploying an original combination of methods to advance our understanding of this significant, yet understudied, area of the law."—Thomas M. Keck, Syracuse University
"Brian Pinaire has produced an intriguing volume that traces the constitutional development of freedom of speech within the context of campaigns and elections...Few other volumes are devoted to an understanding of how the Supreme Court blends disparate lines of legal thought. It is a welcome addition to the literature." —The Law and Politics Review

A rock solid study
By Rob Rozehnal
This book is a ground breaking tour de force--detailed, nuanced and full of insights. Pinaire's research combines a sweeping historical analysis of important Supreme Court cases with focused case studies of recent legal controversies. Best of all, he manages to untangle complex legal theories with conceptual clarity and an engaging writing style. I learned a lot from this book, and highly recommend it to anyone interested in the interface of constitutional law and free speech debates.

Women and Property in China, 960-1949, by Kathryn Bernhardt

Previous scholarship has presented a static picture of property inheritance in China, mainly because it has focused primarily on men, whose rights changed little throughout the Imperial and Republican periods. However, when our focus shifts to women, a very different and dynamic picture emerges.

Drawing on newly available archival case records, this book demonstrates that women’s rights to property changed substantially from the Song through the Qing dynasties, and even more dramatically under the Republican Civil Code of 1929-30. The consolidation in law of patrilineal succession in the Ming and Qing dynasties curtailed women’s claims, but the adoption of the Civil Code and the gradual dismantling of patrilineal succession in the twentieth century greatly strengthened women’s rights to inherit property.

Through an examination of the changes in women’s claims, the author argues that we can discern larger changes in property rights in general. Previous scholarship assumed that patrilineal succession and household division were but different sides of the same coin—sons divided their father’s property equally as his patrilineal heirs. The focus on women, however, reveals that patrilineal succession and household division were, in fact, two separate processual and conceptual complexes with their own distinct histories. While household division changed little, patrilineal succession changed greatly. Imperial and Republican laws of inheritance, finally, were based on two radically different property logics, the full implications of which cannot be truly appreciated unless the two are examined in tandem.

Review
"This is an original and wholly new analysis of changes in women's inheritance rights in China. . . . With her mastery of the legal code and the language of casebooks, as well as her access to unique archival collections, Bernhardt's findings rest on an irreproachable mass of data; the book is a classic example of careful scholarship."—Susan Mann, University of California, Davis

"Using research from 430 actual cases during the period covered . . . Bernhardt emphasizes how the laws were applied in practice rather than what those laws actually mandated. . . . As such, the book is a valuable addition to scholarship on Chinese history, and more specifically the complex history of Chinese women."—History: Reviews of New Books

"A particularly impressive contribution of this book is its sketch of long-term trends in Chinese inheritance law from the Song through Qing periods. . . . Bernhardt's findings here are important and raise many questions for social and cultural historians to tackle, both concerning the cultural environment that led to these legal innovations and the impact of them on the choices families mad as they maneuvered around the law. . . . Bernhardt has immersedherself in Chinese legal writings and excels at explicating judges' decisions."—Journal of Asian Studies

"Bernhardt's impressives study . . . will greatly facilitate comparative study of the concepts of family and property and takes research on legal reform in modern China to a new level."—Choice

"The book demonstrates the difficulties involved in changing norms embedded in a society over a long period of time. It also gives us insights into the problems when foreign concepts are introduced, as well as going into the importance of changes in inheritance rules for family relations, status, the economic situation, etc. Those who deal with issues involved in the introduction of ownership of property by women and rights of inheritance on the part of women in societies in which these concepts are still unknown should definitely read this book."—Quarterly Journal of International Agriculture
"Kathryn Bernhardt has written a highly readable and impressive book with much to recommend it. The scope of her analysis and the range of material she uses set a new high standard in the field. Many of her conclusions will be influential. . . ."—JESHO
"This superbly researched monograph explodes many myths about the inheritance of property in imperial and Republican China precisely because it focuses on women in the intergenerational transfer of property. Kathryn Bernhardt's many significant reinterpretations also rest on a mountain of new evidence from diverse archival and published sources."—NAN NÜ
"This is a fascinating, well-researched, and carefully argued study..."—China Review International

Experience Without Qualities: Boredom and Modernity, by Elizabeth Goodstein

Although boredom appears to be a perennial feature of the human condition, it is linked to ways of experiencing time and thinking about human existence that are recognizably modern. By tracing the emergence and evolution of the modern discourse on boredom in French and German literary, philosophical, and sociological texts, Experience Without Qualities makes a contribution to the intellectual and cultural history of European modernity. In interpreting that discourse as the reflection of a specifically modern crisis of meaning, it contributes to the theorization of modernity and modern experience. And in bringing these historical and theoretical dimensions into conversation, it develops analytic strategies that are of broader application in interdisciplinary inquiry—for the methodological problems that arise in thinking about boredom as a phenomenon of both philosophical and more broadly cultural significance illuminate the constraints that confront any attempt to reflect historically on subjective experience in modernity.

The Constitution of Literature: Literacy, Democracy, and Early English Literary Criticism, by Lee Morrissey

The Constitution of Literature challenges the prevailing understanding of the relationship between literature and democracy during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, when both literature and democracy were acquiring their modern forms. Against the heroic story of criticism shaping the modern public sphere as recounted by Habermas and his followers, it explores how different resistances to democratized reading preoccupied the thinking of the major English literary critics of the time. By paying attention to how critics participated in a debate over theories of reading—its processes for acquiring meaning from the page, its psychological and social effects on individuals, and its diffusion across the population—this book offers a new understanding of the political history of early literary criticism.

Review
"This is an important revisionist account of the birth of literary criticism in the eighteenth century. Morrissey takes on the long-unquestioned connection between democracy and criticism, arguing that we have not fully examined its historical basis. I could not agree with him more. Understanding the literary constitution of our field in its mixed investments and inherent traditionalisms can only make us better readers, and maybe better citizens, too." —Julia Lupton, University of California, Irvine

"Morrissey offers a convincing challenge to Jurgen Habermas's concept of the public sphere—a concept that suffuses hundreds of books and thousands of dissertations on early modern and 18th-century literature, criticism, periodicals, readership, authorship, and book history Rather than assuming the printed word was 'stable,' Johnson, Morrissey contends, took pains to give it stability. This is an exciting argument." —CHOICE

Comparative Peace Processes in Latin America (Stanford Woodrow Wilson Center Press Series)From Brand: Stanford University Press

This book is about ending guerrilla conflicts in Latin America through political means. It is about peace processes, aimed at securing an end to military hostilities in the context of agreements that touch on some of the principal political, economic, social, and ethnic imbalances that led to conflict in the first place.

The book presents a carefully structured comparative analysis of six Latin American countries—Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Colombia, and Peru—which experienced guerrilla warfare that outlasted the end of the Cold War. The book explores in detail the unique constellation of national and international events that allowed some wars to end in negotiated settlement, one to end in virtual defeat of the insurgents, and the others to rage on.

The aim of the book is to identify the variables that contribute to the success or failure of a peace dialogue. Though the individual case studies deal with dynamics that have allowed for or impeded successful negotiations, the contributors also examine comparatively such recurrent dilemmas as securing justice for victims of human rights abuses, reforming the military and police forces, and reconstructing the domestic economy.

Serving as a bridge between the distinct literatures on democratization in Latin America and on conflict resolution, the book underscores the reciprocal influences that peace processes and democratic transition have on each other, and the ways democratic “space” is created and political participation enhanced by means of a peace dialogue with insurgent forces.

The case studies—by country and issue specialists from Latin America, the United States, and Europe—are augmented by commentaries of senior practitioners most directly involved in peace negotiations, including United Nations officials, former peace advisers, and activists from civil society.

Review
"Editor Arnson and 19 collaborators. . . assess the factors that contribute to a nation-state's capacity to reconstruct a functioning and more democratic society after that society has been riven by internal armed conflict. . . The volume has a high degree of internal consistency among the case studies, and Arnson provides both a clear introduction and an insightful conclusion. Recommended."—J. A. Rhodes, CHOICE

"There is, in short, a great deal in this book that will be of interest. It will be a useful addition to the all-too-small literature on successful peace processes, as well as offering new comparative insights to the literature on the countries concerned."
