The Struggle for Sovereignty: Palestine and Israel, 1993-2005 (Stanford Studies in Middle Eastern and I)From Brand: Stanford University

After the 1993 Oslo Accords people across the world anticipated the onset of peace and an end to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. For Israelis, the Accords generated massive economic growth and a sense of security. For Palestinians in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, they led to a dramatic rise in poverty and unemployment due to a complex array of closures, militarized checkpoints, and bypass roads, and a vast expansion of the settlement project that fractured Palestinian territories and communities. In 2000 popular Palestinian rage with the new shape of the Israeli occupation erupted in a second uprising or intifada.

In this volume, prominent scholars and journalists examine the dramatic political changes in Palestine and Israel from the Oslo Accords through the second intifada and the death of Yasser Arafat. Their essays address the political economy of the Oslo process, social and political changes in Palestine and Israel, United States foreign policy, social movements and political activism, and the interplay between cultural and political-economic processes. The volume also includes documents, maps, poetry, and graphic art.

Review
"It is no small task to disentangle the intricate threads of Palestine-Israel relations as these have developed in the recent tumultuous years. These expert essays approach this goal from varied perspectives and with rich insight into the internal workings of the societies themselves, and the international framework in which their confrontations have evolved. If there is to be a resolution to these painful conflicts, and the misery they are inflicting, it will have to be based on comprehensive understanding of the kind that these inquiries provide, with impressive success." —Noam Chomsky,Massachusetts Institute of Technology

"This is a critical and comprehensive guide to political and cultural developments in Israel and Palestine in the last decade. Some of the most informed and insightful analysts writing today allow us finally to see clearly what official media and politicians have obscured." —Lila Abu-Lughod,Columbia University

Terrible author, terrible book, avoid for the sake of your soul
By HM
INTERESTING REVIEWS ABOVE. Several are concerned with a supposed conspiracy to support Israel at all costs. Ha, ha. (listening USHRC?). Others are equating Israeli policies with genocide (a pornographic comparison. For reference, Syria, Iran's ally that the US is now propping up, killed 100,000 souls in the CURRENT round of civil war, could be compared to several African dictators. In the last war, Israel defended itself against terror tunnels, and killed about 2,000, the majority of them terrorists, in contradistinction to the Hamas PR releases that said otherwise).

I would turn around Beinin's logic, and say Israel's economic boom is due to Jewish ingenuity and economic and political freedom, whereas Palestine's morass is due to electing tyrants as political leaders. And, the previous poster is correct, Beinin's depiction of the battle of Jenin as the West sweeping under the rug is laughable. Israel could have bombed the place and destroyed it, but instead, to avoid civilian casualties in its unilateral moral approach to war, engaged in house to house combat with many Israeli casualties in the booby trapped houses. Sa'eb Erakat's lies claiming hundreds of Palestinian casualties were later reduced to twenty percent of the number.

Finally, the reviewer from Columbia ("Bir Zeit on the Hudson") calls the book dispassionate. The author has an axe to grind. Read Beinin's facebook homepage where he described working on a kibbutz as a young man and not liking it , and writing about it in his BIOGRAPHY as the reason for his anti Israel rants that are often contrafactual and require corrections. For example, he used to lecture about the "trillion" dollars of aid the US had given Israel since 1948, which turned out to be an ORDER OF MAGNITUDE high and was not corrected until he was publicly called out on the lie in the Stanford Daily.

Stanford has lowered its standards, that is for sure, and anyone who wants the truth should read anything BUT this book

As further proof of his lack of dispassionate analysis, Beinin actually left ultra liberal Stanford to work in Cairo University, which seemed appropriate as a move, but got in trouble there for criticizing the regime (at the time, Mubarak). He "fled" to Portland, then back to Stanford.

A good multilayered discussion of the current situation
By smamit
This book is a collection of assays about the current situation in Israel/ Palestine - after the rise of the right wing in both elections, the disengagement and The Wall. I found many of the assays extremely useful: assays dealing with women in Palestine, with the economic meanings of shifting occupation methods, the Matrix of control and ethnic separation in the west bank, citizenship and national minority rights within the state of Israel... As an Israeli activist teaching about the Israeli Palestinian Conflict, I found this book highly useful in my work.

Even-handed
By Amatullah
Reveals without passion how the "no-matter-what" variety of support for Israel causes immense human suffering.

This book should be required reading for anyone who equates disagreement with the genocidal policies of Israel with anti-Semitism.
