About the Author
Jennifer Patico is Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Georgia State University. She was a short-term scholar affiliated with the Kennan Institute of the Woodrow Wilson Center in 2001 and 2004.

Ethnography of St. Petersburg teachers, well done.

"It is offensive that a PhD scientist cannot afford to buy bananas for her family." Wth this quote from a Russian teacher, Jennifer Patico begins her ethnography of post-Soviet teachers living in a time of rapid inflation and economic uncertainty. From 1998-1999, Patico studied, socialized, interviewed, and taught with 24 teachers in St. Petersburg. This book is the result.
Observing the teachers' ideas and consumption practices, Patico places the new market-economy's systems of value against teachers' understandings of how they themselves should be valued by society. She shows teachers asking, what's valuable? What happened to our place in society? Why does it seem this new economy is passing us by? What does it mean to be middle-class or to have culture?
These are concerns that I hear from middle-class Americans, too, in light of our (admittedly mild) recent economic crisis. Patico's book is an ethnography (anthropological study of a group of people) written for academics, but it provides a thoughtful reflection for many of us 'middle-class' people who find ourselves trying to figure out what is of value in uncertain times.
