A difficult, though valuable, resource

"Village China Under Socialism and Reform" is a historical survey of village life under the reign of the Chinese Communist Party from the eve of the completion of the Communist Revolution in 1948 to the year 2008, just before the books publication date. Dr. Li's survey specifically focuses on his home town of Qin village, as well as drawing from some of the surrounding villages and provinces. While much of the writing from this period of Chinese history has been about the key political players of the 50's-70's within the cities, or has spent more time honing in on specific policies or time periods in the new regime of Chairman Mao such as the The Great Leap Forward or the Cultural Revolution, this book takes a broader approach in presenting the whole period of Communist rule specifically from the perspective of the common peasants in farming villages who comprised a majority of the population. Li gives us a unique look into the lives of the people who ultimately made the Communist Revolution and their government possible, ultimately resulting in the mass movement from villages to cities in the time span of this book. While the book is sometimes very dense and many numbers and statistics are thrown at you to prove the authors thesis, there is undoubtedly a unique perspective within that has previously not been captured in so complete a study. Prior knowledge of modern Chinese history is most likely necessary to get the most from this book as it very academic in nature, however it offers invaluable insights into the Chinese peasants mentality and history if approached seriously.
