On the Origins of Human Emotions: A Sociological Inquiry into the Evolution of Human Affect, by Jonathan Turner

Language and culture are often seen as unique characteristics of human beings. In this book the author argues that our ability to use a wide array of emotions evolved long before spoken language and, in fact, constituted a preadaptation for the speech and culture that developed among later hominids. Long before humans could speak with words, they communicated through body language their emotional dispositions; and it is the neurological wiring of the brain for these emotional languages that represented the key evolutionary breakthrough for our species.

How did natural selection work on the basic ape anatomy and neuroanatomy to create the hominid line? The author suggests that what distinguished our ancestors from other apes was the development of an increased capacity for sociality and organization, crucial for survival on the African savanna. All apes display a propensity for weak ties, individualism, mobility, and autonomy that was, and is today, useful in arboreal and woodland habitats but served them poorly when our ancestors began to move onto the African plain during the late Miocene.

The challenge for natural selection was to enhance traits in the species that would foster the social ties necessary for survival in the new environment. The author suggests that the result was a development of certain areas of the primate brain that encouraged strong emotional ties, allowing our ancestors to build higher levels of social solidarity. Our basic neurological wiring continues to reflect this adaptive development. From a sociological perspective that is informed by evolutionary biology, primatology, and neurology, the book examines the current neurological bases of our emotional repertoire and their implications for our social actions.

Review
“Turner’s thesis—the primacy of biologically based emotions as the foundation of human social bonding—is intellectually stimulating, and scholars in many fields not only in the social sciences but also in biology and the humanities, will want to read this book. . . . The writing style is clear and engaging.” —Larry Arnhart, Northern Illinois University

"Turner's book is intelligent, well-written, and scholarly. The argument is strong and plausible. It is an impressive achievement from the standpoint of neuroscience." —Antonio R. Damasio,University of Iowa

Emotions really matter!
By Luciano Rossoni
Great book! Professor Turner not only presents the hypothesis evolution of emotions it was crucial to the development of society as well as strongly founded his arguments on neurological basis. From the comparative study between men and primates, the author clearly shows evidence that without increasing the repertoire and the complexity of emotions, the ancestor of man could never have had any chance to organize in large groups to increase their chances of Survival. With a text very well written and an unique fluidity, the work is interesting both for social scientists like to neuroscientists and evolutionists.

Penetrating and Lucid

What a shame that Amazon's review system enables patently unqualified readers to taint the reputation of first-rate scholarship. Amazon really needs to implement a two-track system: "Reviews for Intelligent Readers" and "Reviews for Know-nothings and Dimwits."

_On the Origins of Human Emotions_ is a genuinely excellent work of research and exposition. It is refreshingly lucid, well-informed, independent minded, and thought-provoking. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

For the record: I have absolutely no connection to the author, nor any stake in the debates to which he contributes. I am a professor at an R1 university (in the humanities) with a basic interest in the topic. I would not hesitate to assign this book to smart undergraduates, and I expect that any graduate student or academic (except perhaps those hostile to evolutionary theorizing as a matter of dogma) will find it fruitful. Less intellectually-minded readers will have as much trouble with this book as they would with any work that aims to expand knowledge rather than proffering a dumbed-down gloss.

Good info, bad writing
By 420funk
This book contains good information and some very interesting hypotheses about how human emotions evolved. Unfortunately it is terribly written. It is very unclear at times, using scientific jargon when common language would be much better. Ideas are poorly organized and main points are often simply repeated rather than bolstered with explanations and examples.
