The author maintains that the revolution in contract thinking is best understood in a frame of reference wider than the rules governing the formation and enforcement of contracts. That frame of reference is a cultural negotiation over the nature of the individual subject and the role of the individual in a society undergoing transformation. Areas of central concern include the enforceability of promises to make gifts; the relationship of contracts to speculation and gambling; and the problem of incomplete contracts.

A very specialized book

I teach contracts, as well as having worked with them on many occasions, so my interest goes beyond even that of a typical law student. This is the sort of book one reads AFTER reading Oliver Wendell Holmes' 'The Common Law,' with its patient (and occasionally slightly obtuse) digging through origins of ideas and practices. If you liked something like 'The Common Law,' you may very well like this. Such concepts as consideration and promises are gone over with a fine-toothed comb.
Most people who deal with contracts in a typical business/practical context would probably not directly benefit from this. It is for a person with a hobbyist's, a professor's, or possibly a professional's, enthusiasms in this field.
