Jeffers consciously set himself apart from the poetry of his generation—by physical isolation at his home in Carmel, by his unusual poetic form, and by his stance as an “anti-modernist.” Yet his work represents a profound, and profoundly original, artistic response to problems that shaped modernist poetry and that still perplex poets today. Now, for the first time, all of Jeffers’s completed poems, both published and unpublished, are presented in a single, comprehensive, and textually authoritative edition of five volumes.
The present volume is in four parts. An Introduction deals with the scope and principles of selection for the edition, including the decision to present the poems in chronological order, and gives a brief review of the textual evidence and commentary that form the bulk of this volume. The essay “Chronology” offers an overview of Jeffers’s career, the evidence for dating the poems, and the arguments drawn from that evidence.
The two parts that follow describe the rationale and evidence for establishing the texts of the poems for this edition, and present, in the form of extensive commentary and tabulations for each poem, the material (notes, preliminary workings, revisions, discarded passages, and variations in published versions) that both complicate and enrich the study of Jeffers’s poetry and prose. These commentaries also incorporate a number of additional selections from Jeffers’s previously unpublished writings.
There are three appendixes: tables of contents for original editions as well as some planned editions that were never published; poems (not included in this edition) that have appeared in posthumous compilations; and errata for the first four volumes. The book concludes with two indexes, of titles and of first lines.

Then as Now

The Selected Poetry Of Robinson JeffersWhen I was a college student at the University of Iowa Writer's workshop, we studied Robinson Jeffers as the voice of the future. I loved these poems with all my heart and wished that I could somehow write what I saw in this prophetic and beautiful way. What we have in Robinson Jeffers is a poet, who not only could envision the future, but one who could take all the nature around him and make you long for his earth, his sky, his water. Do we have a poet these days who is as unafraid to confront the real issues of our time in the same way. We need such poets desperately. I hope all who want to look at this beautiful earth and preserve it will revisit this man's poetry. In it they will find solace, freedom and occasionally honest joy, and they will also see why they need to look around them, find what they can do to help, and DO IT!

Indispensible for the Scholar

The dry title suggests an afterthought, but the real meat of the Stanford Jeffers is in this volume, which collects the editorial apparatus that would have swollen the first four volumes to immense size. The Jeffers reader may balk at Hunt's decision to reorder the published poems chronologically in the first three volumes (Hunt makes a reasonable case for this decision) and to begin AFTER the publication of Californians (a less reasonable decision), but Volume Four, which includes the earlier poems, unpublished manuscripts (except, oddly enough, "The Alpine Christ"), and Jeffers' prose, is invaluable, as is this final volume.
I bought the first four books without hesitation and only realized after working with them that I absolutely needed the fifth. Of the five, it is the fifth that I open the most often. I wish Hunt had been less discreet about his decision regarding "The Alpine Christ," since the poem is in the small field of Jeffers studies highly controversial (three books treat it -- dubiously in my opinion -- as central to understanding Jeffers' work). It is referenced in one paragraph of Volume Four, yoked with "Brides of the South Wind," which Hunt DOES include, and it is not indexed in Volume Five. The manuscript is supposedly 150 pp. of a 200+ page abandoned work, as
"reconstructed" by a famous Jeffers fan; "Brides of the South Wind," on the other hand, is a collection of finished poems that Jeffers was unable to find a publisher for. Some of the poems were eventually published in other volumes.
The five-volume Stanford Jeffers is an essential tool in Jeffers' scholarship, so much so that the Jeffers Studies style guide requires page references to it rather than to the original books. For anyone daunted by the price (around $500 at current secondhand rates, $300 or so if you get lucky), the Stanford Selected Poetry (not to be confused with the 1938 Random House Selected Poetry that Jeffers himself oversaw), is an economical alternative.
