Amazing (and not scary) Book!

I found this book almost by accident--which is the way I suppose others might find it, although people should seek it out. Anyone interested in literary and social theory, in citation, in ghosts, or in just a plain good read should read this book. It is beautifully written and contains subtle interpretations of not only Shakespeare but Marx and Weber, Keynes (whom I didn't know), etc. It has a light touch, but the concept of "reenchantment" is fascinating. Really--read this book!--you will be surprised!

Who hosts ghosts? All of us, I would think. In a remarkable and original intertextual study, Martin Harries brings Shakespeare and modern economic analysis under his purview to argue that the hunter is forever haunted by the hunted and that any attempt to disavow the supernatural will inevitably also welcome it to the party. Highly recommended.

Reading these stories enables one to register these people’s lives and the forms of social suffering that infuse them.

The original publication of this book was a major social and political event in France, where it topped the best-seller list and triggered a widespread public debate on inequality, politics, and civic solidarity. "The Weight of the World" consists mainly of conversations with a wide variety of contemporary (mostly French) people--judges, gangsters, policemen, concierges. The various interviews, while covering quite disparate social worlds, manage to coalesce fairly well. This is excellent ethnography, and while many of the statements of these people might at first seem banal, taken as an aggregate, they support Bourdieu's theoretical framework quite well. On a more personal level, some of the interviews are quite funny and a few even made me cry. Bourdieu's works continue to challenge and demolish theories which neglect social reality. Very powerful, but I might suggest reading some of his more theoretical stuff first ("Pascalian Meditations" is very good)...

Robinson Jeffers (1887-1962) is not only the greatest poet that California (and indeed the American West) has produced but a major poet of the twentieth century who occupies a prominent place in the tradition of American prophetic poetry.

Jeffers consciously set himself apart from the poetry of his generation—by physical isolation at his home in Carmel, by his unusual poetic form, and by his stance as an "anti-modernist." Yet his work represents a profound, and profoundly original, artistic response to problems that shaped modernist poetry and that still perplex poets today.

For Jeffers, as for no other important modern American poet, there has never been a collected poems, not even a truly representative selected poems—the current Selected Poetry, first published in 1938, contains no poems from the last three volumes published during Jeffers's lifetime or from his posthumous volume. Now, for the first time, all of Jeffers's completed poems, both published and unpublished, are presented in a single, comprehensive, and textually authoritative edition of five volumes.

The present volume is in three parts. "Poetry 1903-1920" consists of some of the poems published while Jeffers was a college student, two early collections (Flagons and Apples and Californians), and a number of poems that were never published or were recently rediscovered. "Introductions, Forewords, and Miscellaneous Prose, 1920-1948" gathers all the major prose works. "Unpublished Poems and Fragments, 1910-1962" is mostly material that Jeffers never published, and apparently never tried to publish. The fifth volume of commentary will contain various procedural explanations and textual evidence for the texts presented in the edition, as well as transcriptions of working notes for the poems and of alternate and discarded passages. The Collected Poetry is designed by Adrian Wilson.

Fascinating collection of California poetry

I was familar with Jeffers from other collections of poetry, but reading a collection of his own poetry is very interesting. Being from the coastal area and reading his poetry about the lives of the people who have settled in Big Sur and other nearby areas is fascinating. The short and long poems catch the atmosphere, the geography and the personalities of people who have lived here with the beauty of poetic language. The comments about his life and development as a poet are quite helpful. A good book for someone interested in Coastal California poetry in its formative years.

Early and Unpublished Jeffers

A must for the Jeffers completist. His early poems were not his best, but they are essential for an understanding of the poet. And Stanford University Press has produced an unusually handsome volume.

Used is good

At $17 (current used copy price), this is a real find. Jeffers scholars are obsessed by the apparent huge leap from Jeffers' early work to "Tamar." This book will give you the opportunity to look at the stepping stones. It's no place to begin (there's no better beginning than to pick up Roan Stallion, Tamar, and Other Poems, sadly out of print for decades. Or, if you trust my judgment, look for a used copy of the original Random House Selected Poems, selected by Jeffers in 1938 and often easy to find for under $10), but it offers a nice feast for the Jeffers enthusiast. One long section collects most of Jeffers' prose writings, not easily accessible anywhere else. This is also the inexpensive way to get the two early books, Flagons and Apples and Californians. The former is a self-published and fairly juvenile collection of love poems, but the second, though its debt to Wordsworth is considerable, segues nicely into the mature work. Among the unpublished poems are four that celebrate the Russian Revolution -- a topic that illuminates nicely Jeffers' evolving politics. If you can still get it for less than $20, grab it.

European Feminisms Rediscovered

Karen Offen's newest work, the groundbreaking European Feminisms: 1700 - 1950, seeks to rediscover, contextualize, and historically analyze the ideas and actions of feminist women and men during the eighteenth, nineteenth, and the first half of the twentieth century. Offen succeeds not merely in filling in the blanks (and they are many) in our historical memory of the wide array of feminists and feminisms during this period, but more significantly, in taking steps to reconceptualize our understanding of this era in European history.
She does this, as she explains, "By placing gender, or relations between women and men, at the center of European politics..." In other words, European history, as traditionally conceived, presents a skewed and partial picture of the past - a portrayal made possible by the systematic marginalization and erasure of feminists and feminisms. The traditional conceptualization of European history has also relied on a refusal to recognize gender as central to human relations. For the past three decades feminist historians, Offen among the most widely known and highly respected of them, have worked to re-think and re-write the histories of many peoples and nations.
This book utilizes the work of this generation of European historians, synthesizing and reconceptualizing their arguments, while building upon their research with an expansive array of published primary sources, to create this wide-ranging, extraordinarily researched text. Relying on the axiom that knowledge is power, and "partial knowledge, or lack of knowledge, can disempower" (p.3), Offen provides a clear explanation for the historical evaporation of our feminist past. Without the knowledge of previous generations of feminists, each subsequent (re)emergence of feminist activists is forced to "reinvent the wheel." Initiating a movement for social change undoubtedly poses greater challenges and barriers than carrying on a long-standing tradition, replete with role models, icons, and heros. Burying these images and memories stymies, or eradicates, their power as inspirational examples to future feminists.
As European Feminisms elucidates, for each feminist action there has been an (if not always equal) opposite reaction. Offen explicates the nineteenth century efforts to exclude women from public and political life as a backlash against women's activism during the French Revolution, the groundswell of male writers reasserting and rejustifying patriarchy as a reaction in the wake of the feminist resurgence during the 1848 European upheavals, and efforts "to put a stop to feminist aspirations and to channel women's movements for their own ends" as central to the rise and support of fascist movements (p.311). The implications behind this history make this, as Offen contends, "a political guidebook, a political act" (p. 395). Writing history is a political act, whether one of political complacency and acceptance, or of action and challenge. Offen presents us with a beautifully composed, intellectually rigorous re-examination and revaluation of the European past. As an historian of nineteenth century France, I have found this book provocative and intellectually engaging. Students in my undergraduate "Women in Modern Europe" class thoroughly enjoyed the text, voting it their favorite of the five books assigned for the course. Celebrating feminism

Feminism was and is among the broadest and most radical political movements of modern times--it concerns itself with a group, women, which makes up more than one half of the human race and with a form of oppression, patriarchy, which is certainly among the oldest and the most widespread. But in spite of its historical importance this movement has received so little attention in the mainstream of historical research that one can almost speak of an erasure of the feminist past. The "new" feminists of the 1970s were so unaware of this history that they believed that they had to reinvent feminism. A generation of scholars, resolved that the feminist movement must never again slip into oblivion, has reconstructed many aspects of its history. Without this research, the broad and synthetic work that Karen Offen presents to us would not have been possible. But Karen Offen, a well-known historian of France and the editor of several valuable collections of documents on women's history, is in many ways critical of this body of research. Historians, she charges, have too often evaluated feminists of past generations by present-day standards, and have criticized or rejected these feminists because they did not conform to today's feminist orthodoxies. Karen Offen, by contrast, places feminist movements in their historical context, which in this volume is the history of Europe from 1700 to about 1950. And, though she admits that many feminists made mistakes, her purpose is chiefly to praise these courageous women and men who, often against crushing opposition, identified, protested, and struggled against the subordination of women in all its varied manifestations. "They deserve," she writes, "not only to be recognized and remembered, but applauded and celebrated (16)." Offen actually writes, not about "feminism" but about "feminisms"--a very wide concept which includes conservative, liberal, socialist, Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, pacifist, and many other movements. And this is a truly path-breaking work. Most works on the history of feminism have confined themselves to a single national culture, and even the anthologies that have dealt with European women's history have focused chiefly on the European "great powers"--Britain, France, Germany, Italy. Offen's work includes these countries but also the many other European nations--for example, Sweden, Ireland, Poland, Switzerland--which are hardly ever included in English-language histories. The research for this book is amazingly broad, including a variety of sources in several languages. And all these diverse histories are integrated into a flowing historical narrative, which is both clear and readable. This international view of European feminism permits many comparative perspectives, which also challenge prevailing views of national feminist movements. For example, the German women's movement, seen in the shadow of National Socialism and the Holocaust, has often been accused of authoritarian and conservative tendencies--but in fact, the German movement before the First World War was one of Europe's most progressive. Karen Offen indicates in her title that her focus is on political rather than social history. Thus she does not tell us much about which women were attracted to feminism, and about how this feminist constituency differed in the various countries. This and many other questions remain to be explored. And because she generally rejects the differentiation between "socialist" and "bourgeois" (or middle-class) feminism, class differences among feminists are somewhat underestimated here. Karen Offen has given us an international context in which to explore such questions. Karen Offen believes that this story is relevant not only to scholars but to all readers. The history of feminism can not only instruct but also empower us. "We have an obligation," she states in her concluding chapter, "not only to contemplate this newly rediscovered history ourselves but to assure its transmission, to the best of our ability, to our daughters and sons, to our grandchildren and to their posterity (394)." This rich and informative work renews our commitment to this important task.

Whether Islam is compatible with democracy is an increasingly asked question, but ultimately a misguided one. In this book, Asef Bayat proposes that democratic ideals have less to do with the essence of any religion than with how it is practiced. He offers a new approach to Islam and democracy, outlining how the social struggles of student organizations, youth and women’s groups, the intelligentsia, and other social movements can make Islam democratic.
Making Islam Democratic examines in detail those social movements that have used religion to unleash social and political change, either to legitimize authoritarian rule or, in contrast, to construct an inclusive faith that embraces a democratic polity. It provides a fresh analysis of Iran’s 1979 Islamic revolution—how it has evolved into the pervasive, post-Islamist reform movement of the early twenty-first century, and how it differed from Egypt’s religious “passive revolution.”

It offers a focus on events from Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution to modern times, considering religion, politics and everyday life in the Middle East and providing a fine analysis of the contemporary Iranian revolution and its evolution. Asef Bayat is Academic Director of the International Institute for the Study of Islam in the Modern World, and lends authority and insight to his review of the modern Middle East world.

Good Comparative Study

The book is readily accessible for those with little or no knowledge on either nations or Islam in general. Bayat covers Iran and Egypt and their own perspective democratic movements. His main inquiry throughout the book is how could Iran have an Islamic Revolution with out an Islamic movement while Egypt could not have an Islamic Revolution with an Islamic Movement. Bayat spends a majority of the time focusing on Iran after the revolution and Egypt from the early 70's to late 90's. If you are looking for a brief contemporary history on Iran and Egypt I would recommend it. It's a quick read and can keep your attention. For those with a little more experience with both nations I would still recommend the book due the nature of exploring deeper questions as to whether Islam is inherently authoritarian.

" Making Islam Democratic " It is interesting but incomplete as it covers only 2 countries.
A negative is also that it is very dry reading which seems to be directed to a prfessorial
reader/audience.
