Review
"[Southeast Asia in Political Science] is an excellent starting point for reinvigorating long-neglected debates about poverty and equity in Southeast Asia. It is theoretically and historically sophisticated, contains a wealth of information about social policy in Southeast Asia that is otherwise hard to access, and sets out some provocative ideas that deserve to be taken up and debated by scholars of Southeast Asian political economy from a wide range of theoretical perspectives."—Ben Thirkell-White, Contemporary Southeast Asia

"Southeast Asia in Political Science is successful on several grounds . . . the quality is high throughout, expertly edited for coherence and continuity. Invaluable for scholars of Southeast Asia, the volume also reaches out to scholars of other regions and comparative political scientists more broadly who might examine this book to reflect on the relationship between region, theory, and method and learn what Southeast Asia has to offer."—Ehito Kimura, Japanese Journal of Political Science.

"The scholarship here is excellent. These people know their region and its literature cold. This collection demonstrates the potential of qualitative Southeast Asian area studies to contribute to the broader accumulation of knowledge in political science, including the development of disciplinary theory." —Jack Snyder, Columbia University

"This collection consists of elegantly written, carefully crafted, intelligent, and interesting essays that will be of enormous value to scholars of the politics of Southeast Asia." —John Sidel, London School of Economics

A much needed corrective to Southeast Asian Studies
By Arnold
This is a much needed corrective to the Southeast Asian Studies literature. As the authors argue, Southeast Asia has much to offer the political science discipline. The region's natural diversity makes it a great laboratory for testing theories. However, Southeast Asia has been markedly absent in the political science debates over "big question" theories. Much of the Southeast Asia literature stands accused of focusing on individual countries in-depth, but not engaging the theoretical debates or utilization of cross-country comparative studies.

Southeast Asia in Political Science: Theory, Region, and Qualitative Analysis (Contemporary Issues in Asia and Pacific) serves both as a defense of the field and a clarion call for a more active engagement between Southeast Asia and political science. The articles, written by some of the brightest young minds in the field, review the literature and highlight its contributions to political theory - as well as where it falls short. They generally take an unabashedly qualitative approach, but also stress the need for this approach to engage more explicitly in hypothesis elaboration or testing.

I hope I don't sound too immodest in saying this, but this book preaches exactly what I have said privately to colleagues for years, and I'm glad to see so many prominent Southeast Asianists recognizing the problems. As much as I love Southeast Asia, it has certainly been punching below its weight. If political science actually is to be a "science," questions of methodology are going to keep coming up.

The individual articles are all well-written and the authors know their fields. The one critique I have with the book comes rather from what it fails to address. As anybody who works with Southeast Asia knows, comparative studies are particularly difficult in this region. Unlike Latin America, Western Europe, and the Middle East, etc., there is no lingua franca or common history. It is a huge investment to learn enough even about one country, much less two or three. The same diversity that makes it an ideal laboratory for comparative research, as the authors allege, also makes it difficult to control variables. Moreover, data is often hard to come by and inaccessible. I would like to have seen more explicit discussion of these challenges and how to overcome them. For the young Southeast Asia scholars like myself, that might mean addressing whether it is worth investing in one, two, or any languages? How many countries can researchers can reasonably expertise in before spreading oneself too thin? In addition to the theoretical questions, these questions need to be addressed in order to situate Southeast Asia scholars more firmly within political science.

Dialectic of Enlightenment (Cultural Memory in the Present), by Max Horkheimer, Theodor W. Adorno

Dialectic of Enlightenment is undoubtedly the most influential publication of the Frankfurt School of Critical Theory. Written during the Second World War and circulated privately, it appeared in a printed edition in Amsterdam in 1947. "What we had set out to do," the authors write in the Preface, "was nothing less than to explain why humanity, instead of entering a truly human state, is sinking into a new kind of barbarism."

Yet the work goes far beyond a mere critique of contemporary events. Historically remote developments, indeed, the birth of Western history and of subjectivity itself out of the struggle against natural forces, as represented in myths, are connected in a wide arch to the most threatening experiences of the present.

The book consists in five chapters, at first glance unconnected, together with a number of shorter notes. The various analyses concern such phenomena as the detachment of science from practical life, formalized morality, the manipulative nature of entertainment culture, and a paranoid behavioral structure, expressed in aggressive anti-Semitism, that marks the limits of enlightenment. The authors perceive a common element in these phenomena, the tendency toward self-destruction of the guiding criteria inherent in enlightenment thought from the beginning. Using historical analyses to elucidate the present, they show, against the background of a prehistory of subjectivity, why the National Socialist terror was not an aberration of modern history but was rooted deeply in the fundamental characteristics of Western civilization.

Adorno and Horkheimer see the self-destruction of Western reason as grounded in a historical and fateful dialectic between the domination of external nature and society. They trace enlightenment, which split these spheres apart, back to its mythical roots. Enlightenment and myth, therefore, are not irreconcilable opposites, but dialectically mediated qualities of both real and intellectual life. "Myth is already enlightenment, and enlightenment reverts to mythology." This paradox is the fundamental thesis of the book.

This new translation, based on the text in the complete edition of the works of Max Horkheimer, contains textual variants, commentary upon them, and an editorial discussion of the position of this work in the development of Critical Theory.

Culture as a new barbarism
By TheIrrationalMan
"Dialectic of Enlightenment", one of the most celebrated texts of the Frankfurt School, endeavours to answer why modernity, instead of fulfilling the promises of the Enlightenment (e.g. progress, reason, order) has sunk into a new barbarism. Drawing on their own work on the "culture industry", as well as the ideas of the key thinkers of the Enlightenment project, (Descartes, Newton, Kant) Horkheimer and Adorno explain how the Enlightenment's orientation towards rational calculability and man's domination of a disenchanted nature evinces a reversion to myth, and is responsible for the reified structures of modern administered society, which has grown to resemble a new enslavement. Furthermore, Horkheimer's and Adorno's treatise was one of the most ambitious attempts to synthesise Marxist economic analysis with Freudian psychoanalysis, and is developed with much complexity and skill. Their philosophical and psychological critique of the Enlightenment concepts of reason and nature (which they identify as the loci of domination) spans almost the entire history of Western thought up until recent times, from Homer to Nietzsche. The book was written in 1944, during a phase of the war when the threat of Fascist victory still hung ominously over Europe, and when Horkheimer and Adorno themselves had to flee Germany to America. "Dialectic of Enlightenment" thus represents one of the most pessimistic strands of Marxist thought, giving up all expectations of a people's revolution in Western Europe. This was, in addition to the outbreak of the Second World War, due to the meteoric rise of extremely right-wing reactionary parties in the twenties, and their subsequent popularity, which ruled out by fiat any chance of a popular support for the left. The proletariat, instead of embracing the cause of the people's revolution, opted to give their vote to the Fascists. In their psychoanalytic investigation of this phenomena, Horkheimer and Adorno identify the rise of Fascism with the return of the repressed.

This Amazon Page is a Disaster!!
By J. C. Evans, Jr.
This Amazon page is a disaster. The sample pages are from the earlier, terrible translation published by Continuum. One of the reader reviews is (as it notes) actually a review of the earlier translation. What is it doing here?? In fact, all of the reviews predate the publication of the new translation.

By all means read the Dialectic of Enlightenment! But be sure to use only the new translation published by Stanford.

A Warning about the translation
By A Customer
These comments refer to the old Continuum edition (John Cumming, translator), NOT to the Stanford edition (Edmund Jephcott, translator), which is a fine translation ...

While not wishing to detract from what has been said about the importance of this book, it is worth mentioning that the English translation is scandalously bad and in need of replacement. I've had occasion to make extensive comparisons between the German original and the translation and the results are not encouraging. Much is simply flat-out wrong (e.g., sometimes the translator mistakes one German word for another) even more is unnecessarily clumsy. While Horkheimer and Adorno adopted a rather dense style of writing, nothing they produced is quite as cumbersome as what readers of this translation have had to endure.

One can sympathize with the translator -- he did the translation at a time when very little by Horkheimer and Adorno was in English and it appears that he worked under a rather tight schedule (it is possible to find errors piling up on a page and then suddenly ceasing -- suggesting that the poor fellow took a break and came back later on, with happier results). But there is no forgiving the publisher for leaving this text uncorrected for so long despite a long-standing consensus among students of the Frankfurt School that this is a deeply flawed translation. That anything of the power of the original makes it through the muck of this translation is a testimony to the force of Horkheimer and Adorno's ideas.

A new translation is long overdue. Until then, readers coming to the work of the Frankfurt School might want to seek out Max Horkheimer's Eclipse of Reason, a summary of the argument elaborated here which Horkheimer delivered in English at Columbia University at about the same time of as the publication of the German original of this book.

Democratic Governance in Latin AmericaFrom Brand: Stanford University Press

Producing more effective governance is the greatest challenge that faces most Latin American democracies today—a challenge that involves not only strengthening democratic institutions but also increasing governmental effectiveness. Focusing on the post-1990 period, this volume addresses why some policies and some countries have been more successful than others in meeting this dual challenge.

Two features of the volume stand out. First, whereas some analysts tend to generalize for Latin America as a whole, this group of authors underscores the striking differences of achievement among countries in the region and illustrates the importance of understanding these differences. The second feature is the range of expertise within the volume.

In addition to the volume editors, the contributors are Alan Angell, Daniel Brinks, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, José de Gregorio, Alejandro Foxley, Evelyne Huber, José Miguel Insulza, Juliana Martínez Franzoni, Patricio Navia, Francisco Rodriguez, Mitchell Seligson, John Stephens, Jorge Vargas Cullell, and Ignacio Walker.

Review
"Mainwaring and Scully have assembled an exceptionally distinguished set of scholars, and their contributions do not disappoint. The essays in this volume are original, learned, and lively studies of economic, political, and social achievements in Latin America. They both advance the understanding of human development in the region and provide analyses and conclusions of considerable practical importance and policy relevance." —James McGuire, Wesleyan University

"Democratic Governance in Latin America is a great book on an important topic. It helps fill a substantial gap in the scholarly literature: it examines what democracies actually do, rather than what—according to some observers—they should do, and it seeks to advance toward measurement based on actual, observable policy outcomes." —Kurt Weyland, University of Texas at Austin

About the Author
Scott Mainwaring is the Eugene Conley Professor of Political Science and Director of the Kellogg Institute for International Studies at the University of Notre Dame. Timothy Scully is Professor of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame and a Fellow of the Kellogg Institute.

Being Singular Plural (Meridian: Crossing Aesthetics), by Jean-Luc Nancy

This book, by one of the most innovative and challenging contemporary thinkers, consists of an extensive essay from which the book takes its title and five shorter essays that are internally related to “Being Singular Plural.”

One of the strongest strands in Nancy’s philosophy is his attempt to rethink community and the very idea of the social in a way that does not ground these ideas in some individual subject or subjectivity. The fundamental argument of the book is that being is always “being with,” that “I” is not prior to “we,” that existence is essentially co-existence. Nancy thinks of this “being-with” not as a comfortable enclosure in a pre-existing group, but as a mutual abandonment and exposure to each other, one that would preserve the “I” and its freedom in a mode of imagining community as neither a “society of spectacle” nor via some form of authenticity.

The five shorter essays impressively translate the philosophical insight of “Being Singular Plural” into sophisticated discussions of national sovereignty, war and technology, identity politics, the Gulf War, and the tragic plight of Sarajevo. The essay “Eulogy for the Mêlée,” in particular, is a brilliant discussion of identity and hybridism that resonates with many contemporary social concerns.

As Nancy moves through the exposition of his central concern, being-with, he engages a number of other important issues, including current notions of the “other” and “self” that are relevant to psychoanalytic, political, and multicultural concepts. He also offers astonishingly original reinterpretations of major philosophical positions, such as Nietzsche’s doctrine of “eternal recurrence,” Descartes’s “cogito,” and the nature of language and meaning.

NANCY'S PHILOSOPHY OF CIVIL-SOCIETY
By barryb
NANCY'S PHILOSOPHY OF CIVIL-SOCIETY: Nancy consolidated his thought during the French-publication years of 1993 to 1997. This manuscript was published in 1996 and falls within that range. It should be considered as essential to understanding Nancy's overall position. Each work during these 4 years presented an important point-of-view concerning his structure of "Being".

In this text, he centers on the philosophy of civil society and adds that the "primary" function of philosophy is to articulate "civil-society". He traces this emphasis back to the Greeks of Athens; where even the theater played a role in presenting the"myth" that would inform the direction of society.

some of the more important aspects of this work consist of: (1) his first specific step-by-step articulation of the birth of the "self" when confronted by the "other". (2) a better presentation of "ex-scribing" as both moment and process. (3) and a better job of integrating the mediation of the "void-point" into the system; actually linking psychology and mythology. Nancy's system runs from psychology to mythology to ethics. Here, they are presented together.

You get a real feel for Nancy's emphasis on aesthetics as a tandem co-positing of ethics. And often we are presented with the "stage" of a situation; the "players" of "singularities; and the "writing" of the "being-singular- plural" as the authentic expression of the interiority of meaning that the audience should see.

"void-point" gets addressed on both ends; as "starting-point" and later "mediation". "The sense of the world" of 1997 followed this work. Both books should be studied. A little extra plus for me was his analysis of "logos" with its "logikoi" in Greek culture. He is a superb teacher. Get it soon. 5 stars all the way.

The Meaning of Being, Singular, Plural
By Rhizome
This is a must read for some of Jean-Luc Nancy's deepest insights into the nature of "being-with" (German: Mitsein) and the associated questions of war, technology and event. Nowhere does Nancy provide such a clear and profound account of his insight into the nature of being in terms of "being-with" which is none other than a Copernican revolution in terms of the traditional metaphysical understanding of being. This is significant as it can be read in relation to Heidegger's thinking on being and Levinas's critique of Western Metaphysics and his turn to a non-metaphysical understanding of being.

Nancy's insight is especially profound here as he moves from a meditation on the nature of being itself into questions of sovereignty, war and technology. This text is as such important for political theorists and political scientists working to rethink the notion of sovereignty itself in the age of global terror.

Best discussion of meaning of "self" since Freud
By Rex Styzens
After reading as many of Nancy's other works in English as I could get hold of, I am back to the re-reading I knew was necessary for this book. I needed to come back, because Nancy's distinctions are so subtle that the likelihood is either to misunderstand or to miss the subtleties.

The essay that gives the book its title dares to eventuate in a discussion of love, birth, death, meaning, and most other things close to our hearts. Take love, for instance: not only do we have the Greek varieties of eros, philia, and agape, we have the Christian commandment to love others as we love ourselves. The latter is not helpful, Nancy writes, because we do not yet know who we are and consequently haven't the slightest idea who the other is. So Nancy gives us the ups and downs of understanding what it means to be-with, to be singular plural.

My take is that helps to explain why we get the empty speciousness of such canards as, "You have to love yourselves before you can love another." That can make sense in a climate of psychological treatment, but for ordinary folk we are born loving ourselves and the canard just perpetuates infancy. Nancy writes, ",,,the meaning of the world as being-with (is...) where no one is for one-self without being for others."

Then Nancy sings in celebration of "with" and language, and being as spacing, and almost every other issue at its fundamental level; e.g., "...the essence of singularity (is...) not individuality; it is (...), at one and the same time, infra-/individual and transindividual, and always the two together." (He notes that the "liberty" celebrated by libertarians chooses to ignore its partners, such as equality and fraternity. You can always tell a Frenchman by his verbal continuity, including these days the willingness to constructively consider Marxism.) He offers a catechism for the future of such inquiry, as his later books exemplify.

This does not mean that after having read and understood better Nancy's ideas I no longer have a misunderstanding of truth, love, birth, death, etc. But I do have a better understanding of the significance of my social condition for satisfaction that deserves the name of "self."

Nancy makes clear his disinterest in traditional religion, but his reliance on the concept of simultaneity does offer a style of inquiry also different from science as sequence. If one tries to imagine (and imagination has not been ruled out) everything happening all at the same time, that can be an illustration of holistic thinking. "In being-with and as being-with, we have always already begun to understand meaning, to understand ourselves and the world as meaning. And this understanding is always already completed, full, whole, and infinite." Now that's what I call radical existentialism.

Shanghai: China's Gateway to Modernity, by Marie-Claire Bergère

Shanghai today is a thriving, bustling metropolis. But does its avid pursuit of the modern trappings of success truly indicate that it will once again become the shining example of China's commercial and cosmopolitan culture? While history continues to unfold, eminent China scholar Marie-Claire Bergère takes readers back to when Shanghai first opened to the world in 1842 to narrate the city's tumultuous and unique course to the present.

Shanghai: China's Gateway to Modernity is the first comprehensive history of Shanghai in any Western language. Divided into four parts, Bergère details Shanghai's beginnings as a treaty port in the mid-nineteenth century; its capitalist boom following the 1911 Revolution; the fifteen years of economic and social decline initiated by the Japanese invasion in 1937, and attempts at resistance; and the city's disgraced years under Communism. Weaving together a range of archival documents and existing histories to create a global picture of Shanghai's past and present, Bergère shows that Shanghai's success was not fated, as some contend, by an evolutionary pattern set into motion long before the arrival of westerners. Rather, her account identifies the relationship between the Chinese and foreigners in Shanghai—their interaction, cooperation, and rivalry—as the driving force behind the creation of an original culture, a specific modernity, founded upon western contributions but adapted to the national Chinese culture.

Eclipsed for three decades by socialism, the wheels of the Shanghai spirit began to turn in the 1990s, when the reform movement took off anew. The city is again being referred to as a model for China's current modernization drive. Although it makes no claims to what will happen next, Bergère's Shanghai stands as a compelling and definitive profile of a city whose urban history continues to be redefined, retold, and resold.

Review
"Although other authors have written about aspects of Shanghai's history detailed here, none have brought so much together in a single volume . . . The narrative structure renders it useful as a textbook, and the analyses provide useful starting points for student essays. Given the growing number of courses that focus on Shanghai's history this volume should appear in many university libraries."—Bill Sewell, Canadian Journal of History

"This translation of Marie-Claire Bergère, Histoire de Shanghai (originally published in French by Fayard, in 2002), makes available to readers of English a study offering the best introduction to its subject. In a field of academic research which has produced an entire industry of publications, Bergère's Shanghai can claim this high status not only by virtue of the knowledge reflected in it but also by being a model of clear and elegant writing, assisted by a flawless translation. The overall result is a book to savour, a history of a great city that will appeal to specialists and general readers alike."—Mark Gamsa, Frontiers of History in China

"Marie-Claire Bergère expertly weaves together a great mass of disparate material that has been published on China's most dynamic city. In the process, she leavens her authoritative rendering of social and economic history with some coverage of cultural history, and her evocation of Shanghai's paradoxical position in the reform era is compelling."—Bryna Goodman, China Journal

"The history of Shanghai since the nineteenth century can stand as an accurate shorthand for the history of the changes that China has experienced over the past two centuries. The city was an established port and county seat before Europeans gained permission to sojourn there, but its rapid integration into the world economy and culture following their arrival transformed both the city and d the context within which China would reorient and reorganize itself in the face of Western imperialism. This is the story that Bergère tells so well, in a clear, well-organized, accessible style. She writes in terms of political and economic "rhythms" that shape and punctuate Shanghai's history. The pace is naturally suitable for describing a cosmopolis, it also serves to set up a loose analytical framework to think about the fluctuations that have put the city through its rocky and exciting history. The book is engrossingly written, managing to show the depths of Bergère's knowledge of the city's history while informing readers who are not China specialists without ever condescending to them."—Tim Brook, University of British Columbia

"After examining more than 150 years of Shanghai's history and its starring role in mediating the march of foreign innovation and influence in China, eminent China scholar Marie-Claire Bergère leaves us with a provocative question: Will politics support or impede Shanghai's destiny as teacher and adviser in shaping China's modernity? I eagerly await the answer history reveals."—Marcia R. Ristaino, Kluge Center for Scholars, Library of Congress, author of The Jacquinot Safe Zone: Wartime Refugees in Shanghai

About the Author

An invaluable and strongly recommended addition to academic library International Studies reference collections
By Midwest Book Review
In "Shanghai: China's Gateway To Modernity", author and China scholar Marie-Claire Bergere provides a detailed history of this significant Chinese port city from its first access to Western trade in 1842 down to the present day. From its beginnings as a treaty port, through its soaring prosperity following the 1911 Revolution, through the decimation of the Japanese invasion in 1937, to its post-war travails under Communism, the focus is on the relationship between the Chinese and the Westerners, upon a culture that is the product of Chinese culture as influenced by western ideas as embodies in a vibrant, complex, reform minded urban city perched on the edge of mainland China. Informed and informative, "Shanghai: China's Gateway To Modernity" is a model of impeccable scholarship. Enhanced with the inclusion of extensive Notes, a substantial Bibliography, and a comprehensive Index, "Shanghai: China's Gateway To Modernity" is an invaluable and strongly recommended addition to academic library International Studies reference collections in general, and Chinese History supplemental reading lists in particular.

In so doing, it attempts to refashion literary methodologies and cultural theories in Chinese studies and reread several noncanonical texts in ways that cut across disciplines, genders, and modernities.

Eschewing conventional taxonomies such as the study of literary influences and parallels, this volume shifts the emphasis from Chinese-Western comparativism to a critical rereading of Chinese or China-related texts using a variety of new critical approaches. Essays that draw on literary history, comparative poetics, modernist aesthetics, feminist studies, gender theory, and postcolonial discourse exemplify how multifaceted approaches can enrich our understanding of this field.

The essays are grouped in three parts: studies of disciplines, institutions, and canon formation; gender, sexuality, and the body; and technology, modernity, and aesthetics. They cover a range of subjects, including the challenge of East-West comparative literature, the impact of literary theory on Sinological research, canon formation in traditional Chinese poetry, gender and sexuality in Ming drama, contemporary Chinese fiction and television drama, the problem of translation, the influence of science fiction, and the “cult of poetry” in post-Mao China.

The introductory chapter traces the rise of the Chinese school of comparative literature and addresses the issues facing Western scholars of Chinese-Western comparative literature. A concluding chapter summarizes recent remappings of the geocultural world and outlines future possibilities for comparative literature.

Review
"China in a Polycentric World provides an important and much-needed testimony to the rewards and difficulties inherent in the challenge of practicing a comparative approach that reaches beyond the sphere of Western literatures. At its best, the book spurs scholars to question long-held assumptions about what literature is, how it can be talked about, and who is doing the talking."—China Review International
