China’s Christian Colleges: Cross-Cultural Connections, 1900-1950, by Daniel Bays, Ellen Widmer

China's Christian Colleges explores the cross-cultural dynamics that existed on the campuses of the Protestant Christian colleges in China during the first half of the twentieth century. Focusing on two-way cultural influences rather than on missionary efforts or Christianization, these campuses, most of which were American-supported and had a distinctly American flavor, were laboratories or incubators of mutual cultural interaction that has been very rare in modern Chinese history. In this Sino-foreign cultural territory, the collaborative educational endeavor between Westerners and Chinese created a highly unusual degree of cultural hybridity in some Americans and Chinese. The thirteen essays of the book provide concrete examples of why even today, more than a half-century after the colleges were taken over by the state, long-lasting cultural results of life in the colleges remain.

Review
"China's Christian Colleges is an important reference work. It is authoritative, balanced and insightful, and should be essential reading for anyone interested in the history of Sino-American encounters and the development of modern education in China."—Joseph Tse-Hei Lee, The China Journal

"Daniel Bays has done it again, this time with a co-editor, Ellen Widmer. He has put together yet another wonderfully researched, well organized, and carefully and beautifully written set of articles that deal with, in this case, various aspects of education system that were a major part of the larger Wester missionary enterprise in China."—Murray Rubinstein, Church History.

"The diverse essays in this volume represent an excellent contribution to the ongoing study of their cross-cultural impact, both in China and in the United States."—International Bulletin of Missionary Research

"Marking the beginning of a new era of scholarship on China's Christian colleges, this book breaks with the self-congratulatory scholarship of earlier culture-bound studies and goes beyond more recent work by emphasizing cultural interaction. The volume's contributors explore Christian colleges not as gifts of a benevolent West to a benighted China but as focal points of intercultural interflow."—John W. Israel, Professor Emeritus of History, University of Virginia

A welcome study
By Mary
Although my academic background is in China studies I had only cursory exposure to the history of the Christian missions. In the past the missions have been viewed through the prism of "cultural imperialism," not entirely without justification. New research is showing that the encounter between Western Christian missionaries and Chinese had a two-way impact. The Christian colleges were sites of cultural exchange and current research in China itself acknowledges their benefits for China. This history of the Christian colleges is well-written and highly informed. The authors are experts in the field and write with sympathy for both parties. I highly recommend it.

This book brings together several generations of specialists in Chinese foreign policy to present readers with current research on both new and traditional topics. The authors draw on a wide range of new materials—archives, documents, memoirs, opinion polls, and interviews—to examine traditional issues such as China's use of force from 1959 to the present, and new issues such as China's response to globalization, its participation in several international economic institutions, and the role of domestic opinion in its foreign policy.

The book also offers a number of suggestions about the topics, methods, and sources that the Chinese foreign policy field needs to examine and address if it is to grow in richness, rigor, and relevance.

Review
"The authors of New Directions, more so than those of earlier volumes, amply demonstrate that rigor and richness are mutually reinforcing the study of Chinese foreign policy. Their theoretically informed chapters are based on extensive use of Chinese sources, interviews, and fieldwork, and those authors who test theory most explicitly (Peter Hays Gries and Alastair Iain Johnston) could not have done so as profitably without a profound knowledge of China and Chinese language ability."—China Review International

"New Directions represents the state of the art in the field of Chinese foreign policy."—International Spectator

"The contributions are uniformly of high quality and on important and timely topics. An impressive blend of theory and policy relevance comes through in every chapter."—Pacific Affairs

"All the essays in this excellent volume, which I have assigned to my course on Chinese foreign policy, are produced by highly knowledgeable analysts. The book's applications of Whiting's hypothesis and the author's use of diverse social science methodologies to explore a host of vital issues end up as does informed common sense. The result is a very good book." —Journal of Chinese Political Science

The Civic Life of American ReligionFrom Brand: Stanford University Press

Religious groups constitute a large part of America's voluntary sector, yet relatively few works have investigated them broadly. This collection of essays investigates the public roles of religious congregations and associations. With contributions by premier social scientists, the work gets to the bottom of how effective—or ineffective—religious groups are in offering social services, fostering community life, and creating discussion of social issues such as homosexuality and welfare reform.

Arguing that religious groups experience many of the same constraints and opportunities as nonreligious associations, the book's new assessment of religious groups' public roles goes beyond pessimists' fears that these groups promote culture wars, as well as optimists' expectations that religious groups are always good for society. Touching on themes as old as the American republic, this work brings into focus an urgent, current discussion that will be of great interest to students of religion and society, public religion, civil society, or religion and politics, as well as to religious leaders and policymakers.

Review
"The very fact that this fine volume, edited by Paul Lichterman and C. Brady Potts, supports such a multidisciplinary dialogue is a testament to its quality and broad utility.Theoretically rich yet eminently accessible, The Civic Life of American Religion offers a bird's-eye view of how leading social scientists conceptualize and react to the public dimensions of American religion."—Laura R. Olson, Journal of the American Academy of Religion

"The essays, introduction, and conclusion are clearly argued. This book provides not only a good introduction to some of the major themes in the sociological literature, but also a well-formulated challenge for future research on the intersection of religion and civic life."—Albert Wu, Religious Studies Review

"This important work offers helpful correctives to the overly optimistic idea that more religion in the public sphere will lead to more social connectedness." —John H. Evans, University of California, San Diego

"A lot of books lately extol the virtues of religion for American civil society. In contrast, this work offers interpretive essays--backed by systematic research--that provide a balanced assessment of both the benefits and drawbacks of religion in civic life, and point out directions for new theoretical and empirical work." —Rhys Williams, University of Cincinnati

Charlotte Perkins Gilman: A Biography, by Cynthia Davis

Charlotte Perkins Gilman offers the definitive account of this controversial writer and activist's long and eventful life. Charlotte Anna Perkins Stetson Gilman (1860–1935) launched her career as a lecturer, author, and reformer with the story for which she is best-known today, "The Yellow Wallpaper." She was hailed as the "brains" of the US women's movement, whose focus she sought to broaden from suffrage to economics. Her most influential sociological work criticized the competitive individualism of capitalists and Social Darwinists, and touted altruistic service as the prerequisite to both social progress and human evolution.

By 1900, Gilman had become an international celebrity, but had already faced a scandal over her divorce and "abandonment" of her child. As the years passed, her audience shrunk and grew more hostile, and she increasingly positioned herself in opposition to the society that in an earlier, more idealistic period she had seen as the better part of the self. In her final years, she unflinchingly faced breast cancer, her second husband's sudden death, and finally, her own carefully planned suicide— she "preferred chloroform to cancer" and cared little for a single life when its usefulness was over.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman presents new insights into the life of a remarkable woman whose public solutions often belied her private anxieties. It aims to recapture the drama and complexity of Gilman's life while presenting a comprehensive scholarly portrait.

Review
"In her immensely readable and comprehensive biography, Cynthia J. Davis tells Gilman's fascinating life story with precision, wisdom, and tact. Davis's Charlotte Perkins Gilman: A Biography provides the most complete consideration of Gilman's life. This book includes twenty-five photographs, some never before published, and its careful documentation of sources will prove a boon to future Gilman scholars."—Jean M. Lutes, Feminist Collections

"Davis's long-awaited masterpiece is the most comprehensive Gilman biography to date. Both lyrical and scholarly, this splendid volume offers a coherent and compelling narrative of Gilman's life, work, and philosophy, drawing upon a rich field of source material . . . It is essential reading for Gilman scholars and promises to be the definitive Gilman biography for years to come."—Jennifer S. Tuttle, Resources for American Literary Study

"Charlotte Perkins Gilman is a remarkable retelling of a 'living' that includes, but is not limited to, the career of a figure larger than life . . . Refreshingly, Davis does not shy away from juxtaposing Charlotte's professed philosophies with her lived experiences. A major strength of this biography is Davis's willingness to reveal inconsistencies, contradictions, and potentially unflattering elements of Charlotte's aspirations . . . Even though Davis's work weighs in at over five hundred pages, her writing style and fruitful research leave the reader wanting more, rather than less, of both Charlotte's and Davis's observations."—Cara L. Burnidge, H-Net

"Thanks to Cynthia J. Davis, scholars, students, and general readers finally have a definitive, authoritative, and comprehensive biography of the often enigmatic Charlotte Perkins Gilman. This much anticipated study of Gilman is, in a word, superb . . . [I]t is in the lesser known documents and materials that Davis has found the stuff great biographies are made of. Her meticulously researched volume brings both substance to and new revelations about Gilman's life in a manner that is captivating, thorough, well-informed, and inclusive . . . This book is a must read for anyone interested not only in Gilman but also in the cultural, intellectual, and social history of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries."—Denise D. Knight, Legacy

"To read Davis's book is to be enriched by the lively, evocative pen of Gilman the poet. Every chapter and every section of every chapter (generally there are five) has an epigraph, often a selection from the poetry, which Davis uses skillfully to interpret her life."—Louise W. Knight, Women's Review of Books
"The plethora of biographical data the author resurrected informs this comprehensive, scholarly portrait of Gilman's complex, controversial life and career, significantly contributing to the study of American literature, particularly 19th-century American women writers. The book is noteworthy not only for its inclusion of new salient information about Gilman, but for the careful correlations Davis provides to better present Gilman, the private woman, and her particular public forums of activism . . . Summing up: Essential."—M.L. Mock, University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, CHOICE
"This may be the definitive biography of Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Over the last twenty years, a wealth of biographical data has come to light, much of it unearthed by Davis. Felicitously written, judiciously organized, and critically and theoretically informed, this Gilman biography will supersede all that have come before it."—Gary Scharnhorst, University of New Mexico

Finally, a biography that covers Gilman's later years.
By Lit. Prof.
This biography is essential reading for anyone involved in serious study of Charlotte Perkins Gilman. It offers important correctives to Gilman's not-entirely-reliable account of her own life in the autobiography, _The Living of Charlotte Perkins Gilman_. It provides new and reinterpreted information about Gilman's early years, but, most important, while there have been other biographies prior to this one, Davis's is the first to cover the years after 1900. Doing so was surely a challenge, since, as Davis argues, Gilman resisted discussing the personal and individual, preferring to subordinate self to the social and collective. Highly recommended.

Wholesale Justice: Constitutional Democracy and the Problem of the Class Action Lawsuit (Stanford Law Books), by Martin Redish

In recent years, much political and legal debate has centered on the class action lawsuit. Many lawyers and judges have noted the intense pressure to settle caused by the very filing of a suit. Some contend that the procedure amounts to a form of judicial blackmail. Others counter that it is an effective means of policing corporate behavior and assuring injured victims' fair compensation.

This book represents the first scholarly effort to view the modern class action comprehensively through the lenses of American political and constitutional theory. Redish argues that the modern class action undermines foundational constitutional principles, including procedural due process and separation of powers, and has been improperly transformed from its origins as a complex procedural device into a means for altering controlling substantive law in highly undemocratic ways. Redish proposes an alternative vision of the class action lawsuit, one that is designed to enable the device to serve its valuable procedural purposes without simultaneously contravening core precepts of American constitutional democracy.

Review
"With an innovative framework and readable style, Professor Redish has produced a book that will undoubtedly restructure the nature of the class action debate such that it will more fully account for the 'procedure's impact on the nation's political and constitutional foundations'."—Harvard Law Review

"Although much has been written about class actions, this book is original and enormously important. No one else has analyzed the class action from the perspective of political and democratic theory. All who write about class actions, whatever their perspective, will need to consider and address this provocative work. It is a superb book and a huge contribution to theliterature."—Erwin Chemerinsky, University of California, Irvine

"Widely regarded as one of the most important federal courts scholars of the past quarter century, Redish is also a leading figure in constitutional law. In this convincing, dramatic work, he has fused his fields of expertise in a unique effort to address the class action in terms of democratic theory. He makes a startlingly strong case that class practice undermines significant notions of democratic accountability and raises serious questions about underlying democratic values." —Richard D. Freer, Emory University

About the Author
Martin Redish is the Louis and Harriet Ancel Professor of Law and Public Policy at the Northwestern University School of Law. His books include The Logic of Persecution: Free Expression and the McCarthy Era (Stanford, 2005) and Money Talks: Speech, Economic Power and the Values of Democracy (2001).

Political Representation (Cultural Memory in the Present), by F. Ankersmit

This ambitious work aims to reintroduce history into political theory. Contemporary political philosophy—liberalism, communitarianism, and republicanism—disregards history because it is irrelevant to the nature of politics and to what constitutes a political problem. The author argues that this view reduces politics and political philosophy to a vapid academic game that is insensitive to both the essence and practice of politics. He proposes that an indissoluble link between history and politics lies in the notion of representation.

Since history represents the past, and the core of democratic politics resides in political representation, the author sees representation as the common ground of history and politics. He welcomes, analyzes, and elaborates all the aestheticist connotations of representation. The history of Machiavellianism demonstrates how influential the impact of history has been on political thought, ironically resulting in the repression of history from philosophical reflection on the nature of politics. Historicist political philosophy is distinguished from its anti-historicist rival in terms of the distinction between historicist compromise and anti-historicist consensus, as seen in the work of Rawls and Rorty. Compromise is shown to be politically creative and open-minded, whereas consensus is conservative and totalitarian.

Finally, the author argues that respect is the supreme democratic virtue, and that historicist political philosophy respects “respect,” while its anti-historicist rival has no rivals between disrespect and indifference.

Germans into Jews: Remaking the Jewish Social Body in the Weimar Republic (Stanford Studies in Jewish History and C), by Sharon Gillerman

Germans into Jews turns to an often overlooked and misunderstood period of German and Jewish history—the years between the world wars. It has been assumed that the Jewish community in Germany was in decline during the Weimar Republic. But, Sharon Gillerman demonstrates that Weimar Jews sought to rejuvenate and reconfigure their community as a means both of strengthening the German nation and of creating a more expansive and autonomous Jewish entity within the German state. These ambitious projects to increase fertility, expand welfare, and strengthen the family transcended the ideological and religious divisions that have traditionally characterized Jewish communal life. Integrating Jewish history, German history, gender history, and social history, this book highlights the experimental and contingent nature of efforts by Weimar Jews to reassert a new Jewish particularism while simultaneously reinforcing their commitment to Germanness.

Review
"Gillerman's book uncovers in fascinating manner the extent to which the renaissance of Jewish cultures overlapped with equally decisive social welfare activities to rejuvenate the body of the Jewish community."—Nils H. Roemer, American Historical Review

"[Gillerman's] detailed work does justice to its subject by unraveling the complexities of newly arising Jewish identities, their challenges, the debates in the Jewish community, and the contradictions, as well as options available to Weimar Jews. With this work, Gillerman has done justice to a crucial topic of German and Jewish history; her choice to focus on social welfare policy was a clever one."—Dani Kranz, German Studies Review

"Recommended for university and German Jewish collections."—Ellen Share, AJL

"Sharon Gillerman has produced a stunning analysis of a dimension of Jewish history that is little-known and deserves recognition: the attempt by Jews to re-image, reconfigure, energize and rejuvenate themselves as a component of the greater German body politic, and as a community in its own right, in the Weimar Republic. She succeeds brilliantly in integrating Jewish history into German history, women's history, and social history; this may be the advent of the next generation of history."—Michael Berkowitz, University College London

"Gillerman's sophisticated analysis of the 'Jewish social body' in Weimar Germany joins an increasing number of works that treat German history as it was (not as a stepping-stone to the collapse of liberalism and the rise of National Socialism), and the history of German Jewry apart from the Holocaust. Specifically, the author presents the interesting story of how Jewish social workers during Weimar worked to revitalize the country's Jewish community after the Great War by transforming individuals' health, facilitating reproduction and child care, and rehabilitating endangered youth . . . Recommended."—J. D. Smith, Choice
