"This important and timely book is exciting because I know of no other comparative work within the context of the new global economy that focuses on changes in one metropolitan area. The idea of comparing Asian and Latino immigrant experiences is an inspired one, and the book is a model of scholarship and comparative studies."—Evelyn Hu-DeHart, University of Colorado at Boulder

"A nuanced, detailed and politically informed volume whose strength lies in analysis embedded in a context. . . . More than that, it also creates an approach from which other researchers could benefit by following up the various sociological themes of the niche."—Canadian Journal of Sociology Online

"This book is not just timely, but necessary for everyone trying to come to grips with a California that is changing every minute. It is a valuable resource for various fields across academia and for policymakers across the country."—Contemporary Sociology

"Through comprehensive research on the global city of Los Angeles, the authors in this volume challenge established immigration and assimilation theories that permeate the popular imagination and our public policy , , , ,As a whole [Asian and Latino Immigrants in a Restructuring Economy] presents an excellent 'snaphot' of current issues in immigration policy and studies and provides ample guidelines for the directions that future research and policy should take . . . .The book will be particularly useful for undergraduate courses on immigration, ethnic history, and public policy."—Economic Geography
"This book succeeds in its objective of demonstrating the complexity of southern California's changing socio-economic landscape. The integration of broader political and economic processes with rich empirical analysis is a welcome addition to our understanding of the region . . . .The comparisons of Asian and Latino immigrant groups usefully highlight the differences and—more surprisingly, to some—the similarities between them."—Annals of the Association of American Geographers

The Wages of Wins: Taking Measure of the Many Myths in Modern Sport. Updated Edition (Stanford Business Books), by David Berri, Martin Sch

Arguing about sports is as old as the games people play. Over the years sports debates have become muddled by many myths that do not match the numbers generated by those playing the games. In The Wages of Wins, the authors use layman's language and easy to follow examples based on their own academic research to debunk many of the most commonly held beliefs about sports.

In this updated version of their book, these authors explain why Allen Iverson leaving Philadelphia made the 76ers a better team, why the Yankees find it so hard to repeat their success from the late 1990s, and why even great quarterbacks like Brett Favre are consistently inconsistent. The book names names, and makes it abundantly clear that much of the decision making of coaches and general managers does not hold up to an analysis of the numbers. Whether you are a fantasy league fanatic or a casual weekend fan, much of what you believe about sports will change after reading this book.

Review
"Wages is provocative, stimulating, and challenging." —Dick Friedman,—Sports Illustrated

"The Wages of Wins brilliantly and provocatively argues that our eyes betray us when we watch professional athletes. To see the truth about how good a point guard or a quarterback really is, we need the help of algorithms." —Malcolm Gladwell, author of Blink and The Tipping Point

"When I read the book, I was impressed by the amount of effort that went into compiling the reams of data that underlie the work. . . . The fundamental case the authors make is that the statistical analysis shows that the conventional wisdom about sports is dead wrong—that the data, as they put it, 'offers many surprises.'" —Joe Nocera,
New York Times

"Sports fans with an analytical bent shouldn't skip this book. And come to think of it, perhaps sports executives should be reading it as well."—The Free Lance-Star

“This book presents complex economic analysis in a breezy manner that the casual sports fan and econophobe will appreciate and enjoy. I plan to assign it to students and recommend it to friends.”—Michael Leeds, Temple University, and author of The Economics of Sports

“When I read the book, I was impressed by the amount of effort that went into compiling the reams of data that underlie the work…The fundamental case the authors make is that the statistical analysis shows that the conventional wisdom about sports is dead wrong—that the data as the put it, “offers many surprises.”—Joe Nocera, The New York Times

“In The Wages of Wins, the authors attempt to puncture some popular myths—saying that payroll and wins are not highly correlated, and that in baseball, football….attendance hasn’t been significantly affected by players strikes or owner lockouts.”—Sue Kirchhoff, USA Today
“In The Wages of Wins, the economists David J. Berri, Martin B. Schmidt, and Stacey L. Brook set out to solve the Iverson problem. Weighing the relative value of fouls, rebounds, shots taken, turnovers, and the like, they’ve created an algorithm that, they argue, comes closer than any previous statistical measure to capturing the true value of a basketball player. …Looking at the findings that Berri, Schmidt, and Brook present is enough to make one wonder what exactly basketball experts—coaches, managers, sportswriters—know about basketball.”—Malcolm Gladwell, The New Yorker

Bad math smugly explained
By D. Blum
I really looked forward to this book after reading the review in The New Yorker. The reviewer's critical skills, evidently, do not extend to evaluating the merits of a logical argument.

There are so many logical problems with the analysis in this book, it is difficult to know where to begin.

I will limit myself to just a handful, among countless possibilities.

1) The authors find a correlation between the stability of a basketball team's roster and its winning percentage, and conclude that roster stability is a factor in producing wins! Classic problem of mistaking effect for cause. Clearly, winning teams are disinclined to make major roster changes, and losing teams are eager to. I was so amazed at this I reread it to see if I missed where they pointed this out. They didn't.

2) The authors show a correlation between more assists and winning percentage and conclude that assists help produce wins. Again, very silly. A team with a higher shooting percentage and fewer turnovers will of course get more wins and produce more assists. But the assists are not producing the wins - the shooting percentage is. Were these factors discounted? Not according to the text.

3) Most problematic, the authors define a way of measuring the value of players to a team, and then "prove" their method by summing these values, per player, across each team, and show that they do indeed predict the number of wins each team will get. What they fail to realize is that their method of apportioning value to a player necessarily sums back to team totals such as points per possession that we know correlate to wins per team. But this in no way proves that the apportioning is wrong. We could just as easily base each player's value "team's points while players is on the floor - opposing team's points while player is in the floor". Sum for all players on team, and you will find the team's points-per-game and the opposition's points per game, and you have just "proven" that your method of measuring a player's value is accurate.

4. In looking at rebounds, there is not even the slightest caveat that a player's rebounds per game are affected by who he shares rebounding responsibilities with. If you are in the front court with Shaq, you will get fewer rebounds, not because the other team gets them, but because your teammate does, so comparing rebounding stats between players across teams is highly questionable.

5. Ridiculously, they conclude that adding great players to your roster makes the other players worse not better (this is written as a great revelation, demythifying the common presumption that great players make teammates better). Adding great players indeed will make other players statistically less productive. They will take fewer shots, get fewer rebounds, fewer assists if a new ball-handler is added, etc. And so, according their evaluation method, the other players become worse. This should clearly tell them there is something wrong with their system, based so heavily on specific metrics of productivity. Instead, they simply accept the merit of their method as fact, and conclude that adding great players really makes other players worse!!!

The most frustrating thing about this book, however, for an analytically minded reader, is its smugness. They understand statistics. They have the answers. They are bringing them down from the mountains and explaining them to us idiot peons. All while their reasoning is so problematic.

I in no way am a supporter of the intuitive and nonsensical drivel one hears from so many sports coaches, players and commentators. I would have enjoyed a good, statistical, analytical study of the game of basketball. Unfortunately, this is not it.

Disappointing
By Estimated Prophet
I had high hopes for this book but my expectations were not met. The authors are clearly eager to bear the Freakonomics mantle (they say as much in several places), but unfortunately they do not exhibit anything resembling the flair of Levitt and Dubner. Their cute comparison of quarterbacks and mutual funds just sounds like a cheap imitation of the comparison between teachers and sumo wrestlers (which, honestly, wasn't all that clever anyway). Much of the other writing also seems to imitate the conversational style of Bill James, but without as much wit. Overall the writing comes off as alternately condescending and self-congratulatory, and sometimes both.

Style aside, the book contains a number of substantive weaknesses. For example, the chapter on the effects of labor shortages on fan attendance shows clear signs of bias. The authors favorably cite plenty of evidence that supports their hypothesis; and when confronted with evidence to the contrary, they suddenly decide to pick it apart and explain it away. Sorry guys, it doesn't work that way. This clear example of "disconfirmation bias" causes the chapter to lose all credibility. It wouldn't hold up in a peer-reviwed journal.

Further, although the authors claim to be "taking measure of the many myths in modern sport" (the subtitle of the book), they actually devote a lot of effort to knocking down strawmen. Is there anyone alive who really thinks that "the best players in basketball score the most" or that "quarterbacks should be credited with wins and losses"? No one with more than a passing knowledge of sports actually believe these things, but the authors act awfully smug after debunking these nonexistent "myths." Yes, we're all aware that offense is at most half of football, and that the passing attack is only about half of that. Luckily no one attributes wins to quarterbacks, except maybe to point out that a team can win with a mediocre QB (e.g., pointing out Trent Dilfer's career winning percentage) -- which is a different issue altogether.

The book also spends a lot of time trying to analyze basketball using methods that are much better suited to baseball. Don't get me wrong, I admire their effort to subject basketball to some analytical rigor. But baseball is largely an amalgam of statistics and can be studied as such. Basketball simply cannot. There are too many events in basketball that clearly affect the game but are not quantified (a pick, a shot that is altered but not blocked, a team deciding not to drive against a particular player, a player drawing a double team and getting a teammate open, the second-to-last pass of a possession). One might conclude, based on the demonstrated strong correlation between wins and the conventional statistics employed in this book, that these events are all relatively unimportant. But this argument ultimately fails because the purpose of the analysis is to measure the contributions of individual players. A team might score two points but the model does not adequately break down individual contributions beyond who scores the points and, if applicable, who gets the assist. Similarly, most of what happens on defense isn't recorded, and the model only takes into account steals and blocked shots. The authors sweep these weaknesses under the rug and proceed to devote dozens of pages to comparing players based on their new, supposedly superior, measures of individual performance. This is an enormous flaw.

Further, I was also struck how a team of economists could write about the value of basketball players without paying attention to the supply curve. They do adjust some of their stats for league-average at the position, but not on a category-by-category basis. In the final chapter, where they purport to show that scorers are paid too much, they fail to examine the issue of scarcity. My wild guess is that the data would support their conclusion, but I was struck by the absence of real analysis here.

Of course, no book on sports statistics and/or economics is complete without the obligatory nod to the genius of Billy Beane and the claim that salary disparities do not lead to competitive imbalance. This version of the story is no more convincing than any of the others. They happily point to the 2003 Marlins as an example of a low-payroll team winning against the odds, but somehow ignore the fact that a number of those players (Derrek Lee, A.J. Burnett, Josh Beckett, Ivan Rodriguez, Alex Gonzalez, Mike Lowell) are now earning big salaries in big markets while the Marlins are under .500. Sure, a team can win with young players who haven't yet become eligible for free agency or arbitration, but is that any way to build a franchise for long-term success? Where is the analysis of that rather obvious question? And where is the point, made quite clear in Moneyball, that no inefficient market can last forever? What happens when the next Billy Beane is hired to run the Yankees?

I will grant that the book is thought-provoking. But ultimately there are many other books on sports statistics and economics that are much more readable and well-argued than this.

Lucid writing, entertaining argument and a passionate subject. This is like a fresh breeze.
By D. Stuart
Berry and his co-authors take a really fresh approach here to the world of sport, and look at the big dollars that get spent - or mispent - by teams that want to win at all costs. The mistake that team owners are making, according to the authors, is that they are looking at the wrong statistics of success. When you buy a player, what are the vital stats that really matter?

The book is at once disheartening (money buys one hell of a lot of the points we see on the various league tables) but then also entirely heartening: individual sportspeople, and b-teams still rock the game and lift their performance way above the odds.

The difference is that many managers and coaches (and us fans for that matter focus on the wrong numbers. We count the goals that a player scores, but discount the fumbles, the turnovers and the other dynamics of team play. A star goal shooter may actually be bad for the team's chance of winning.

Sports these days is dominated by statistics. You listen to a commentary and you hear the win/lose ratios, the all-time earnings figures, the goals, the assists and what have you. Well here the authors put another set of very relevant numbers on the table - and show how they reached these conclusions. Their arguments are pretty convincing and as a result I think we'll be talking about this book for some time to come - and pondering the nature of sports today and whether Player X really is greater than Player Y. What a fresh piece of writing! Buy it - I'm sure you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

The Ethnic Project: Transforming Racial Fiction into Ethnic Factions (Stanford Studies in Comparative Race and), by Vilna Bashi Treitler

Race is a known fiction—there is no genetic marker that indicates someone's race—yet the social stigma of race endures. In the United States, ethnicity is often positioned as a counterweight to race, and we celebrate our various hyphenated-American identities. But Vilna Bashi Treitler argues that we do so at a high cost: ethnic thinking simply perpetuates an underlying racism.

In The Ethnic Project, Bashi Treitler considers the ethnic history of the United States from the arrival of the English in North America through to the present day. Tracing the histories of immigrant and indigenous groups—Irish, Chinese, Italians, Jews, Native Americans, Mexicans, Afro-Caribbeans, and African Americans—she shows how each negotiates America's racial hierarchy, aiming to distance themselves from the bottom and align with the groups already at the top. But in pursuing these "ethnic projects" these groups implicitly accept and perpetuate a racial hierarchy, shoring up rather than dismantling race and racism. Ultimately, The Ethnic Project shows how dangerous ethnic thinking can be in a society that has not let go of racial thinking.

Review
"I think that The Ethnic Project is an outstanding work that makes an important contribution to our understanding of the past and present racial history of the United States. The book is very well written (Bashi Treitler's prose is a delight to read) and meticulously researched . . . The Ethnic Project should definitely be part of the conversation as we press forward with the task of understanding race in the United States."—Ashley "Woody" Doane, American Journal of Sociology

"Treitler offers a succinct history and diagnosis of racial grouping in the U.S., from the nation's origin to the contemporary moment . . . The text has solid promise as an introductory ethnic studies course reading . . . Highly recommended."—N. B. Barnd, CHOICE

"With her ingenious concept of 'ethnic projects,' Vilna Bashi Treitler brings a new optic to the study of race. She shows that, despite their oppression—indeed, because of it—minorities develop collective agency. Not only do they mobilize to overcome barriers of discrimination and to remedy past wrongs, but through their activism and cultural production they also transform how they are perceived and treated by their oppressors. Treitler reveals why some ethnic projects are successful, others less so, and thus her book provides an authoritative answer to those who ask the tired question, 'We made it, why haven't they?'"—Stephen Steinberg, author of Race Relations: A Critique

"Vilna Bashi Treitler masterfully weaves race and ethnicity into a single historical narrative that reveals the ugly reality of exploitation and stratification that has always undergirded American society."—Douglas S. Massey, Princeton University

Guarding Life's Dark Secrets: Legal and Social Controls over Reputation, Propriety, and Privacy, by Lawrence Friedman

Guarding Life's Dark Secrets tells the story of an intriguing aspect of the social and legal culture in the United States, the construction and destruction of a network of doctrines designed to protect reputation. The strict and unbending rules of decency and propriety of the nineteenth century, especially concerning sexual behavior, paradoxically provided ways to protect and shield respectable men and women who deviated from the official norms. This "Victorian compromise," which created an important zone of privacy, first came under attack from moralists for its tolerance of sin. During the second half of the twentieth century, the old structure was largely dismantled by an increasingly permissive society.

Rich with anecdotes, Friedman's account draws us into the present. The Supreme Court has interpreted the Constitution to include a right of privacy, which has given ordinary people increased freedom, especially in matters of sex, reproduction, and choice of intimate partners. The elite, however, no longer have the freedom they once had to violate decency rules with impunity. Although public figures may have lost some of their privacy rights, ordinary people have gained more privacy, greater leeway, and broader choices. These gains, however, are now under threat as technology transforms the modern world into a world of surveillance.

Review
"This is a wise, learned, and memorable text by one of the leading historians in America." —James Whitman, Yale Law School

"As always, Friedman's wonderful eye for historical detail and his deep and wide research provide the reader an engaging and highly readable narrative ... The manuscript is a characteristically excellent piece of work by one of the very best practitioners of legal history." —John Fabian Witt, Columbia Law School

"In his new book, Stanford legal historian Lawrence M. Friedman does not address these questions directly, but lays some useful groundwork for their contemplation by providing a social history of the legal remedies most commonly associated with protecting the privacy of personal information and behavior The book tells its main story clearly, entertainingly, and persuasively." —James A Gardner, University at Buffalo Law School, State University of New York

"Friedman provides a detailed history of various legal concepts related to privacy and personal reputation. The strongest parts of the book attempt to address intriguing puzzles such as why truth has emerged as an absolute defense for libel, but truth makes blackmail a more serious offense Friedman's command of the material and many interesting examples make much of this story interesting." —CHOICE

"To a cultural historian interested in the social construction of privacy Friedman's book offers an interesting and useful discussion of how the law has worked to protect reputation and privacy for some while leaving others unprotected."
—American Historical Review
"[The book] enriches our understanding of privacy as a shifting legal and cultural concept, it illuminates changing attitudes toward life's dark secrets, and it helps us fit the fate of a figure such as Eliot Spitzer into a broad historical context." —Journal of American History

Do social classes really exist? Is disinterested action really possible? What do the family, the church, and the intellectual world have in common? Can morality be founded on hypocrisy? What is the "subject" of action? In this new volume, one of France's foremost social thinkers of our time responds to these major questions and to others, thus tracing the outlines of a work that could be called "Pierre Bourdieu by himself."

In these texts, the author tries to go to the essential, that is, the most elementary and fundamental, questions. He thereby explains the philosophical principles that have led to his social science research and the idea of the human that guides his choices there. With the lucidity allowed by retrospect, Bourdieu brings out the fundamental theories of his greatest books, notably Outline of a Theory of Practice and The Logic of Practice (Stanford, 1990), and, with an eye to the future, presents the first results of his most recent work on the state, the anthropological moorings of the economy, and male domination.

Bourdieu's theory is both a philosophy of science dedicated to revealing the objective relations that shape and underpin social life, and a philosophy of action that takes account of agents' dispositions as well as the structured situations in which they act. This philosophy of action is condensed in a small number of key concepts—habitus, field, capital—and it is defined by the two-way relationship between the objective structures of social fields and the incorporated structures of the habitus.

All in all, this book should be an indispensable introduction to Bourdieu's work, not only to students and scholars in sociology, anthropology, political science, and philosophy, but throughout the social sciences and humanities generally.

Excellent Introduction to a Prolific Writer
By Tron Honto
A difficulty with approaching such a prolific author as Bourdieu is determining where one should begin reading. This short, 150-page book composed of mostly lectures and concise essays serves as an excellent beginning to not only gaining a grasp of the key ideas put forth by Bourdieu..., but also, insofar as Bourdieu throughout the work is reviewing a lifetime of sociological writing, it serves as an excellent topical mapping of his previous works giving small tastes of previous studies on Kabylia, Distinction, Homo Academicus, etc. While there are moments when the brevity of treatment makes for a meager argument, I would nonetheless recommend this book to anyone with a desire to begin exploring the works and ideas of Bourdieu.

An excellent invitation, but not sufficient in itself
By Kevin Lande
This book, a collection of various articles written by Bourdieu, serves as an excellent invitation to Bourdieu's oeuvre. It provides some introduction to key concepts, and introduces the reader, through important selections, to the logic and presentation of Bourdieu's thought. The book covers various niches of Bourdieu's study, from symbolic violence to ethics to aesthetics to Kabyle gift-giving, and so on. While it is not sufficient in of itself as a complete introduction to Bourdieu's vast works, it serves as an enticing appetizer, inviting the reader to delve deeper into the ingeneous system of understandings that Bourdieu has constructed. Bourdieu synthesizes a wide range of intellectual precursers, from Weber, Marx, Merleau-Ponty, Mauss, and many others. This is certainly evident, though primarily in a latent fashion, in "Practical Reason."

Practical Reason is excellent as a very broad, very general, but insufficient introduction to Bourdieu's thought. Some of the most important articles in this collection are "Genesis of the State" and "The New Capital." These articles should not be seen as, in themselves, sufficient to understanding Bourdieu. Rather, they serve to sensitize the reader to the peculiar presentation (both cognitive and linguistic) that characterizes Bourdieu's work. Bourdieu is noted for being a very inpenetrable reader, and this is a very purposeful strategy employed by Bourdieu in order to break free of the presuppositions inherent in ordinary language constructions. If you plan on reading more Bourdieu, Practical Reason is a very appropriate starting-point, as a collection of articles that only begins to habituate the reader. However, it must be read as part of a greater project, reading other works by Bourdieu. If you only want to get a general idea of his theories, read "An Invitation to Reflexive Sociology". You may also wish to look at "The Logic of Practice" and "Outline of a Theory of Practice (Cambridge Studies in Social and Cultural Anthropology)" which are both supposed to be standard introductions into Bourdieu's work.

Best Introduction to Bourdieusian Thought Available
By A Customer
It's not very often that an author is able to take a highly complex set of work(s) and summarize them into an easily read and understood piece. While the overviews offered by scholars of Bourdieu, such as Swartz's _Culture and Power_ or Bourdieu and Wacquant's _Invitation to Reflexive Sociology_ prove a broad overview of Bourdieu's work, they generally require that the reader be well versed in the specifics of Bourdieusian analysis to be able to take full advantage of them. In _Practical Reason_, Bourdieu provides a comprehensive overview of his major ideas, including field, habitus, capital, and reflexivity. He does this without weighting his writing down by citing himself constantly (the difficulty with Swartz) or by bogging himself down in long and confusing questions posited by the analysis of an Other (the difficulty with _Invitation_).
Instead, Bourdieu offers a clearer invitation. Rather than being placed into the position of an outside observer who is being addressed as the Third Person - the audience member - in _Practical Reason_ Bourdieu engages in an exposition of his idea, with you as the only audience member. Not only is this more comfortable to read than being placed into the position of the voyeur of others' conversation, but it also allows a direct interaction with the author.
Another aspect that makes this text an enjoyable introduction is that unlike _Outline of a Theory of Practice_ (the usual entry to Bourdieu) or _The Logic of Practice_, there is much less ethnography to transport the reader into a confusion of cultural (mis)understanding. Of course, for readers who are used to Bourdieu's complex sentences and are familiar with his theory, the lack of direct application may be frustrating, as _Practical Reason_ does not range far beyond theoretical exposition.
However, for first time students and readers who may wish to know more about the ideas of one of France's (and the world's) leading sociological minds, this book is the most comprehensive and understandable introductions available.

The CIA and the Culture of Failure: U.S. Intelligence from the End of the Cold War to the Invasion of Iraq (Stanford Security Studies)By

The 9/11 attacks and the war in Iraq sprang in no small part from massive intelligence failures, that much is well understood. How the CIA got to a point where it could fail so catastrophically is not.

According to John Diamond, this slippage results from the tendency to overlook the links between seemingly unrelated intelligence failures and to underestimate the impact of political pressure on the CIA: factors we need to examine to understand both the origin and magnitude of the 9/11 and Iraq intelligence failures.

To bring these links to light, Diamond analyzes the CIAs role in key events from the end of the Cold War (when the Soviet Union—and thus the CIAs main mission—came to an end) to the war in Iraq. His account explores both CIA successes and failures in the Soviet break-up, the Gulf War, the Ames spy case, the response to al-Qaedas initial attacks, and the US/UN effort to contain and disarm Iraq.

By putting into historical perspective the intelligence failures--both real and perceived—surrounding these events, Diamond illuminates the links between lower-profile intelligence controversies in the early post-Cold War period and the high-profile failures that continue to define the War on Terrorism.

From Publishers Weekly
Diamond, a defense analyst and former reporter for USA Today, presents a perceptive account of the reasons behind a double-barreled intelligence fiasco: 9/11 and the invasion of Iraq. In the case of 9/11, Diamond claims that the CIA failed to determine the target, timing, and perpetrators of an attack it knew was coming. With Iraq, he says, the CIA perceived a threat that did not exist: weapons of mass destruction. The failures were linked, Diamond says. The implosion of the Soviet Union ended the threat the CIA was designed to meet, leaving the agency at loose ends in an unstructured global environment. Revelations of intelligence failures bred a culture of failure, by which Diamond means a crisis of confidence in the CIA's abilities. That generated internal friction and factionalism, with blind spots and biases shaping judgments. One result was failure to assemble a coherent image of developing security threats. Another was overcompensating for 9/11 by reasoning that with Iraq, safe was better than sorry. Diamond's evaluation of the CIA's crisis of confidence adds insight to debates about intelligence failures. 10 illus. (Sept)

Review
"Diamond has put together a sequence of long, trenchant, truly eclectic essays on the CIA's internal workings, consistently stressing its tendency to outsmart itself. He has astutely canvassed active and recently retired agency personnel, cultivated top personalities in the congressional-oversight committees, combed through the documents and professional literature, and emerged with fine-grained, fair-minded analyses. The result is a collection of riveting specific case studies, with sharp and frequently surprising judgments. With Diamond's detailed treatment of key, catalytic incidents...the astute reader can appreciate the many setbacks—more than a few self-inflicted—that in turn produced full-blown debacles such as the Ames case and the falsified assessments that sparked the Iraq war." - BookForum

"John Diamond has combined his considerable journalistic skills and his policy knowledge to produce an interesting and important book that examines the interplay of intelligence and politics during a crucial transition period for U.S. national security. John adds new insights to our understanding of the links between intelligence and policy as they developed over the last 15 years—from the collapse of the Soviet Union to the Iraq War. Both policymakers and citizens interested in America's security will find this book to be a valuable frame of reference as we look ahead to the challenges facing our nation in the coming years." —Sam Nunn, Former U.S. Senator

"John Diamond's The CIA and the Culture of Failure is well-written and carefully researched. He begins by noting that our intelligence professionals must ask difficult questions, do robust research, and think critically. He is unflinching in delineating, honestly and succinctly, how hard it will be to achieve these goals. Diamond's book exposes the very real dangers of relying on biased intelligence products and describes how difficult it often is to identify such biases. This book will give policy makers new insights into the benefits and the hazards of relying on intelligence for policy decisions." —William J. Perry, 19th United States Secretary of Defense

"The CIA and the Culture of Failure is a very important work that focuses on intelligence and policy issues that are of immediate interest in dealing with key crisis areas like Iraq, Iran, and North Korea. No one can be definitive in a field where so much is classified, but this book frames a key debate over the future of intelligence that deserves broad attention by the Administration, the Congress, and the intelligence community. The work is solid, well-thought out, and covers a wide range of sources without bias; and without academic, ideological, or political prejudice." —Anthony H. Cordesman,Arleigh A. Burke Chair in Strategy, Center for
Strategic and International Studies
"For all those searching for a level-headed, critical historical analysis of the CIA written with an insightful journalist's nimble pen, look to John Diamond's book." —Richard L. Russell, Professor, National Defense University, former CIA
political-military analyst, and author of Sharpening Strategic
Intelligence: Why the CIA Gets It Wrong and What Needs to Be Done to Get It Right

Intelligence in Context
By Retired Reader
The explicit concept guiding this book is that intelligence failures (or successes) are not isolated events, but rather occur within the context of the national security processes. Or as Diamond succinctly puts it: "The biggest intelligence failures are usually the product of accumulating misjudgments and lapses..." at all levels of the national security establishment. He also makes the important point that there is a very thin line between intelligence successes and failures. These related concepts are the bases for Diamond's central argument that the legacy of real or perceived failures at CIA, its culture of failure, makes its intelligence production processes vulnerable to pressure from other elements of the national security establishment. Diamond believes this culture of failure leads to other intelligence failures that are caused by the reluctance of CIA analysts to make the same mistake twice or to present intelligence that may be counter to the thinking of senior policy makers.

Diamond also makes a very valuable observation that there is a wide gap between the line intelligence analysts and the senior intelligence officials who present the face of CIA to the executive branch and congress. Much of the problem of so-called "bad" intelligence stems from the reluctance of seniors to accurately reflect analytic positions if those positions run counter to the direction that policy formulation is taking. As
Diamond points out, analytic processes and conclusions are often by necessity convoluted and ambiguous. Therefore, both senior intelligence managers and their policy making clients find many accurate intelligence products confusing and frustrating. As a result, staff functionaries often will `scrub' intelligence products to eliminate contradictions and ambiguities. The resulting product may not be accurate, but it is much easier to understand than the original.

That said, Diamond also notes that CIA analytic tradecraft is sadly lacking. He cites numerous examples where CIA working analysts demonstrated a shocking lack of competence. For example, the CIA misinformation that caused the U.S. to execute a precision air strike that hit the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade, instead of its intended target a Serbian military target was the fault of inexcusable carelessness of CIA analysts (this included failure to use readily available open sources, existing local CIA and U.S. Embassy sources, and an unwillingness to examine current information). Even allowing for all the mitigating factors, CIA has a sub-standard record for intelligence production that is as much due to poor analysis as to outside pressures and the complexities of the analytic craft.

This book is fair to CIA and to the national security establishment. Diamond is on the fringes of this establishment and not of it and this has enabled him to be objective about its failings and successes.

Failures yes, but.....
By Robert Sparrenberger
Solid retelling and analysis of the CIA and the intelligence community for the last 25 years. Mr Diamond starts with the fall of the Soviet Union and proceeds moves through events of the 1990s and early 2000s. I think my favorite part was the discussion the Aldrich Ames. How they never caught this guy for so many years is fascinating.

A final comment would be that gathering intelligence on the "bad guys" is not easy. They are trying to keep this information secret for a reason. Mr Diamond I think forgets this point at times and assumes that the US intelligence apparatus if focused on what it needs to do can achieve this goal. I don't know if that is true. Guessing and speculation based on what you have is probably done more than we are willing to admit. People do it in their everyday lives and it happens at the highest levels of security too. Sometimes you get it right and sometimes you don't. The examples in the book were some of the ones we didn't get right. But the title of the book is the failures. For some reason, he hasn't written about the things they got right.

The CIA will never get credit for it's successes and will always be punished for it's mistakes. They don't want their name out on the Washington Post in either situation. They work best in the shadows. Throw in politicians and their own angles and you have a big mess.

Solid book. Enjoyed the retelling of the intelligence world for the past 20 years.

Ambiguous Bodies: Reading the Grotesque in Japanese Setsuwa Tales, by Michelle Li

Ambiguous Bodies draws from theories of the grotesque to examine many of the strange and extraordinary creatures and phenomena in the premodern Japanese tales called setsuwa. Grotesque representations in general typically direct our attention to unfinished and unrefined things; they are marked by an earthy sense of the body and an interest in the physical. Because they have many meanings, they can both sustain and undermine authority. This book aims to make sense of grotesque representations in setsuwa—animated detached body parts, unusual sexual encounters, demons and shape-shifting or otherwise wondrous animals—and, in a broader sense, to show what this type of critical focus can reveal about the mentality of Japanese people in the ancient, classical, and early medieval periods. It is the first study to place Japanese tales of this nature, which have received little critical attention in English, within a sophisticated theoretical framework. Li masterfully and rigorously focuses on these fascinating tales in the context of the historical periods in which they were created and compiled.

Review
"This is a study of grotesque representations in Japanese satsuma, popular short tales often about bizarre or extraordinary events informed by Buddhist moral sensibilities. The author, keenly aware of the interpretative difficulties of a genre whose definition is ambiguous, and provenance, audience, setting, and reception unclear, makes a stab at it through a close analysis of over one hundred tales from various collections from the ninth to the fourteenth centuries . . . [M]uch can be learned by this interesting contribution to medieval religious literary studies."—Mark MacWilliams, Religious Studies Review

"Li carefully weaves comparisons with the Western tradition, knowledge of Heian and Kakamura history, and even some psychological theory to provide context for skillfully translated tales. Both scholars and students will enjoy the book."—Janet Goodwin, Journal of Japanese Studies

"Ambiguous Bodies is an ambitious work that attempts to decode and make sense of the many comical, grotesque, and supernatural tales about fox-spirits, demons, dismembered bodies, anomalous sexual encounters, and the like that constitute the world of setsuwa . . . Li's book is useful contribution to sesuwa research and to debates about the applicability of Western models to the study of pre-modern Japanese texts."—Eric C. Rath, Monumenta Nipponica.

"This volume will be a useful resource for students of Japanese history as well as Japanese literature."—CHOICE

"Ambiguous Bodies is a work of insight and erudition—a tremendously entertaining read. From sexy snakes and man-eating monkeys to dismembered bodies and demon lovers, Michelle Li evokes a strange and wonderful world of late-Heian and early-medieval tales, exploring it with grace, wit, and scholarly sophistication."—R. Keller Kimbrough, University of Colorado, Boulder
"I am thrilled to see Ambiguous Bodies in print. The stories are hugely entertaining: comic, chilling, and racy, sometimes all at once. Li's thoughtful translations, however, and the gift of a global context for them, are what set this book apart. I can't wait to teach it."—Charo D'Etcheverry, University of Wisconsin-Madison
"Li's lively translations and commentary serve effectively to demonstrate how the depiction of monsters embraced by the societies in question helped people in ancient and early medieval Japan make sense of the events of their time."—Janet A. Walker, Rutgers University
