All these writers and artists address mixed race as both an aesthetic challenge and a social concern, and together, they gesture toward a poetics of social justice for the "mulatto millennium."

The Souls of Mixed Folk seeks a middle way between competing hagiographic and apocalyptic impulses in mixed race scholarship, between those who proselytize mixed race as the great hallelujah to the "race problem" and those who can only hear the alarmist bells of civil rights destruction. Both approaches can obscure some of the more critically astute engagements with new millennial iterations of mixed race by the multi-generic cohort of contemporary writers, artists, and performers discussed in this book. The Souls of Mixed Folk offers case studies of their creative work in an effort to expand the contemporary idiom about mixed race in the so-called post-race moment, asking how might new millennial expressive forms suggest an aesthetics of mixed race? And how might such an aesthetics productively reimagine the relations between race, art, and social equity in the twenty-first century?

Excellent for scholars, student affairs staff, and students alike

This book is exceptionally well-written and organized. The volume can be accessed by all college-level readers. It is an excellent choice for scholars interested in a compelling critical enthographic study of college access and attainment among Chinese Americans. It is also useful for Student Affairs professionals seeking to understand and/or support the academic goals of Chinese American students (some lessons are most likely generalizable to the larger Asian American and/or general college-going population). This book may also be of interest to current college students from this type of background as it will help to create a sense of virtual community for students.

A MUCH NEDED LOOK AT HOW CALIFORNIA DID IT

The California Idea fills a big need in the scholarship on higher education: a broad and comparative analysis on how an important state has approached the issues of broadening higher education access. This book is well written, good for both scholars, policymakers, and those generally interested in a public higher education system that has benefited so many Californians.

For those interested in the state's history of public education, this book will explain the politics, and give you what you need to know without rummaging through a myriad of state publications. Douglass does an excellent job at both informing and entertaining the reader. By far, one of my favorite books.

The Re-Enchantment of the World is an interdisciplinary volume that challenges the long-prevailing view of modernity as "disenchanted." There is of course something to the widespread idea, so memorably put into words by Max Weber, that modernity is characterized by the "progressive disenchantment of the world." Yet what is less often recognized is the fact that a powerful counter-tendency runs alongside this one, an overwhelming urge to fill the vacuum left by departed convictions, and to do so without invoking superseded belief systems. In fact, modernity produces an array of strategies for re-enchantment, each fully compatible with secular rationality. It has to, because God has many "aspects"—or to put it in more secular terms, because traditional religion offers so much in so many domains. From one thinker to the next, the question of just what, in religious enchantment, needs to be replaced in a secular world receives an entirely different answer. Now, for the first time, many of these strategies are laid out in a single volume, with contributions by specialists in literature, history, and philosophy.

Logically Enchanting

Magnificent book. If you're feeling at all cynical, you ought to read it. Any time I see anything about enchantment in modernity, the tone is wistful -- the authors mourn a primitive mode of experience that has been driven to extinction by the rational worldview. The essays in this book do no such thing. Instead, each presents a possible way of finding a sense of wonder without relinquishing the scientific thinking to which we moderns so desperately cling. Remarkably, each essay provides a *different* solution to the problem and contributes a unique, and often surprising, perspective to the picture of modern enchantment. What a relief (and delight!) to discover such a wealth of magic so close at hand.

Reason and Mystery Living in Peace

At first blush one wouldn't think using the words "magic" and "secular" in a complementary fashion would work. But this collection of essays does succeed - at least in some degree - to meld magic and rationality.

The various essays begin with Max Weber's plaint (or proclamation - your choice) that "The fate of our times is characterized by rationalization and intellectualization and, above all, by the `disenchantment of the world.'"

This has generally been taken to mean that the project of the Enlightenment - its reason and increasingly scientific method - has taken (or will take) away the mysteries of life, the aspects that we conventionally see as beyond human involvement and understanding. This has, of course, been anathema to the theses of religion as we commonly know it, and has been at the root of the centuries-old friction between religion and reason. But this book takes on itself a project that I applaud: a healing of this rift, in all its manifestations.

Each essay is an attempt to do just this in various fields of endeavor. We see in looking to the re-enchantment latent in gardens and place, in architecture, religion, art, literature, philosophy, and even in politics, elements of human experience that allow us to become re-enchanted with life, secular life in particular.

The point is made here that re-enchantment isn't a return to a primitive human way of viewing things, after centuries of science and reason, when we should know better. Instead, it's allowing ourselves to be re-enchanted with life - within the world given to us via centuries of rational progress.

There's a tacit suspicion here that reason, too, has its limits, as the difficulties of the last hundred years or so have caused humanity. While this may be in part because of a remaining lack of development of reason within world culture, it is hard to avoid the idea that the working of the left brain will never be without the right brain's enchanting spectacle. And, conversely, that enchantment will forever need reason as its anchor, lest it lead humanity astray.

Admittedly, the editors and separate essayists have bitten off a lot with this project. Still, it's a vital one, a project that can nudge reason into a proper intellectual panoply. I'd encourage anyone who has read this far into this review to take this book on, and I'd point readers primarily toward the section on ideology and on Nietzsche. It's that important a subject.

Missing magic

Beyond a doubt the book is scholarly and insightful. But it is also dead, dry, ivory tower intellectualism--the essence of disenchantment. I am not sure who the intended audience is. The collection is rather like a chemist's version of chocolate mousse; it may be a valid, even useful analysis, but it misses the point. The first comparison that bubbled up was David Abram's The Spell of the Sensuous, which is along the same lines if not precisely the same. But Abram evinces a deep tenderness for his subject which is lacking here. I suspect Merlin would not get through the first paragraph of any of the essays and, certainly, this is why Peter Pan did not want to grow up.

It elaborates a fascinating account of the rhetoric of ethical dispositions and gives its readers an attentive, moving way of understanding the condition of human survival after the Holocaust.

Why has power in the West assumed the form of an "economy," that is, of a government of men and things? If power is essentially government, why does it need glory, that is, the ceremonial and liturgical apparatus that has always accompanied it?

In the early centuries of the Church, in order to reconcile monotheism with God's threefold nature, the doctrine of Trinity was introduced in the guise of an economy of divine life. It was as if the Trinity amounted to nothing more than a problem of managing and governing the heavenly house and the world. Return to the Trinity: Agamben's Masterpiece

In his Metaphysics, R. G. Collingwood calls the Trinity the absolute presupposition of the West. In Capital, Karl Marx rails against the dark Trinity of land, labor and capital as a secular displacement of its theological source.
Long out of philosophical fashion, Agamben blends these two insights. He returns to the key of the Trinity to unlock, in the vocabulary of Michel Foucault, current global economic governmentality. That Agamben evokes the Trinity as the origin of the problem is unsurprising but, unlike Foucault, who can see only oppression in the Christian tradition, Agamben opens a speculative window onto the radically liberationist side of the `economic' Trinity. I highly recommend this book, not only as a masterpiece by one of Europe's leading political thinkers, but as an overdue reconsideration of the potentialities of Trinitarian thought, tracing its lineage deep and long in the West.

Homo Sacer completed

This book is an essential complement to Homo Sacer which now, in retrospect, is clearly unfinished business. If Homo Sacer is about sovereign power, then Kingdom and the Glory represents a theory of the full articulation of power due to governance. Power indeed is revealed here as the economic articulation of Sovereignty (common auctoritas) and governance (proper potestas).
The observation that power is split between absolute rule and governmental, popular complicity is not new. But the revelation that all politics is held in the inoperative economy between the two is THE political statement of our age. This is an explosive masterpiece of political philosophy masquerading as work of theological philology. It forms a major part of a trinity of recent works by Agamben which justify all the attention his work. Along with Signature of All Things and Sacrament of Language the Agambenian critique of the metaphysics of difference is complete: power, metaphysics, language. An immense achievement grounded in systematic philosophical deduction and faultless philological induction.

The Kingdom (and the Government!) and the Glory.

Of the many things that can be said about the work of Giorgio Agamben, being lazy with his research isn't one of them. In fact, I imagine that if by some freak accident, all our sources regarding ancient and medieval theology were somehow lost to fire, one could, with a bit of extrapolation, reconstruct it all again just using Agamben's corpus of works. And if that really did come to pass, The Kingdom and the Glory - encyclopaedic as it is in its scope and its grasp - would be the go-to book from which to begin. Ostensibly a book about the theological roots of modern government, Agamben's actual procedure takes place by way of a meticulous - almost pedantic - tracing of the way in which theologians from Polycarp to Aquinas attempted to answer the age old chestnut: just how does God - who is supposed to be transcendent and removed from the world - go about governing that very world? Or, to put it in Agamben's preferred idiom, how does the Kingdom relate to the Government?

Agamben's answer - or at least the answer he finds in theology - is: by way of an economy. 'Economy' here understood not in the modern, narrow sense of 'distribution of goods', but in the wider sense of 'organization' and 'administration' (Agamben pretty much always uses the Greek spelling, 'oikonomia', to mark the difference). Central to the book's narrative then, is that the Christian doctrine of the trinity, in which God is at once unified and triune, and whose relations are organized by a divine oikonomia, is - in its formal functioning at least - at the core of today's apparatuses of modern government - including, perhaps especially so, democratic government. It's a wonderfully provocative thesis which ought to be read to be believed, if only for all the incredible pit stops of erudition along the way (one does wonder though where the Holy Spirit is in all this, the third figure of the trinity which Agamben only pretty much mentions in passing).

And of course there's the 'Glory', the analysis of which takes up about the latter third of the book, devoted to some wonderful excavations of the role of liturgy in Christian worship. Agamben's thesis here is that 'glory' serves to 'cover-up' the fact that the 'providential machine' - his catch phrase for the above articulation of Kingdom and Government - is fundamentally broken, 'empty' at it's core, such that insofar as (spoiler alert!): "Government glorifies the Kingdom, and the Kingdom glorifies Government... the center of the machine is empty, and glory is nothing but the splendor that emanates from this emptiness, the inexhaustible kabhod [Glory] that at once reveals and veils the central vacuity of the machine".

Harsh words! And for all the academic theological discussion within - which is to say, for all of about the 250 pages of the 290 page book - the political point that Agamben attempts to impart is that this holds true for modern governmental functioning as well. Now, as a thousand readers of the book have pointed about, Agamben's 'method' here is somewhat suspect. OK, so theology ain't quite up to snuff, but does this translate so easily over into modern politics as Agamben constantly and repeatedly alludes (and I really do mean alludes, rather than 'argues')? It's an open question for me - and, in some sense, the rest of Agamben's Homo Sacer series - but it's a question that bristles with the promise of intellectual adventure.
